- I am incredibly fortunate to have been given the opportunity to train as a plastic surgeon, and ultimately have two excellent options to choose from. Here's why I decided to resign from plastic surgery residency.

If you're surprised by the decision - I was too. It feels great on the other side, but I still love medicine. I wish I could have done both, but it's just not possible. I don't want anyone to be discouraged just because I decided it wasn't the best path for me.

I am genuinely shocked that you quit surgery just to be an Entrepreneur. All these years I thought going into Plastic Surgery meant the Surgeon would eventually become an entrepreneur.
Something tells me that maybe you were just a little burnt out. It’s ok to feel burnt out. It’s okay to tell people, “Hey, I’m tired and I can’t do it all.” Its very obvious that you tend to want to please people and you like to be the very best at everything you do. Guess what... maybe...this is a sign that you shouldn’t always seek perfection and to be kinder to yourself.
The decision to quit altogether seems a bit irrational. I’m sorry but if you want to change anything in medicine, you will have to practice medicine in some sort of capacity. Didactic and the clinical practice are very different.
It’s great that you have the book smarts but ultimately you will always be lacking the hands on experience which would have provided you with the necessary insight about surgery and it’s intricacies.
Embrace the imperfections...celebrate them!

He literally has no student loan debt b/c either his parents paid for medical school or he is in the .01% of major medical school scholarships in the nation. Easy decision to make if you're in either of these situations.

seams like there's a lot of room to improve the way doctors are selected and trained. good to see one of the best wants to be part of that change. be prepared for vested stakeholders trying to stop you, all the while the same stakeholders commenting on how change is needed.
i might speculate that your own medical condition might have played some part in you considering this path. I would say you've got a broader perspective that most doctors. more power to you!
I quit radiology to go to internal medicine, each and every one of my colleague and even those in internal medicine said i was crazy and made a terrible decision that I was going to regret it for the rest of my life!
And to be honest, i was a little afraid to take such a big decision but guess what? I’m extremely happy now.
So yeah, you should do what you like, regardless of what other tell you.

Radiology is literally the most boring specialty, besides perhaps dermatology and being a family doctor. Who want’s to go to med school to interpret scans all day, its almost as boring as being a pathologist. Surgery is the way forward.

@ Heisenberg that's interesting. I'm happy in Radiology and never heard of anyone going into another specialty. BTW to the other posters, Radiology is certainly not boring. It's hard to be bored when your interpretation decides if a patient has to go to the Operating room or not.

Its based on having a better lifestyle , work life balance , minus the stress and headache of having to deal with sickness and death everyday of your life.

Ultimate 90 yea I agree with you. All the COD and the pain of studying for like 7 more years to complete the board vs being a youtuber in this era where you can make enough to live or as much as average physician could do. It isn’t a tough decision for me.

In Belgium, we officially have a 48 hour limit BUT 99% of residents have no choice but to do more work or else there's the threat of not getting your specialty. so yeah ...

It's now 60 hours law instead of 80 hours
This is exactly why I decided on PA school instead of medical school. 80 hours per week for 3-5 years of my life isn't something I can rationalize in the years most people become parents and see the most important years of their child's life. I didn't want to wake up as a physician one day and have hardly any relationship with my own children because I devoted all of my life to a career.

Med school student from France here, we have a 48h per week restriction but it has never been applied to us so far. Most resident I know work 60 to 80h a week easily depending on which field they are in

Nah honestly if I had your abilities, your productivity, and obviously your heart for others...your impact is way better suited for not doing surgery.

Just watched the whole video and I have to say, it takes strength and courage to bet on yourself, take a leap of faith, and just believe that you will do great. It’s also so hard to step out of residency, where you work hard with your colleagues and go through a tough period along side them. Honestly, you are my inspiration Kevin. I am currently studying medicine in Europe and also thinking about doing something in addition to medicine in an effort to leave behind some kind of legacy as well. I always wanted to be a doctor and entrepreneur, but after watching your videos over the years, my drive has only been strengthened to pursue this path. Thanks for sharing your journey, you may or may not fully understand this, but your videos have an immense impact on millions of persons. I know this because they have immensely impacted mine and others that I have met here in Europe. I know you are going to be very successful on the road ahead, keep it up!
I love your new direction and goal. I think it's a noble and necessary mission that someone has to embark on to fix the problem with medical student burnout and depression. I watched you when I started med school in 2015 and as somebody with two loves I totally get it. You're going to do great in whatever path to take. I might make a similar decision even though I'm trying to match ortho, but we'll see in a year or two. My second love is illustration and writing for children. I have a publishing contract with a nice company which is very tempting and exciting. Looking forward to what comes next.

I'm not surprised that you made this decision. I was surprised in the beginning of watching your videos that you were an ACTIVE medical doctor or residency. Those videos are well made, in terms of content, narration, graphing, timing, etc. And all of these takes time to make. I'm only a nursing student, and find there is not enough time to complete all required studies. It is unbelievable that being a medical residency you are able to produce these videos along with everything else in life. Good luck with your next move. It is a valuable path to choose, as long as you will always remember why you chose it.
I love art and doing a lot of other things besides medicine, and med school seems to take up a lot of time/financial resources. I guess I have to be patient for a few more years at least. Luckily I can live vicariously through you ;). I’m excited for what you have in store, brother!

Crazy how much I needed to hear this message. There are a ton of parallels I can draw from this and my current situation - trying to stay in an unsustainable environment. How did you go about making the dimecision between thise e things and where are you now with it??
I started a plastic fellowship after general surgery residency. I detested the emphasis on cosmetics/money in plastics. I discovered I loved taking care of sick patients and doing big trauma. If you don’t stay at training/trauma centers you don’t do significant reconstruction. I thought plastics would be a great match, too. I have a minor in fine art and earned money in medical illustration. Caring for trauma and vascular emergencies is a calling, doing boob jobs isn’t.

Dear Kevin, first time I watched your video.
I think that you are born to do great things.
I am doing psychiatry residency in Finland. I earlier left Family Medicine in Canada, because of those 24h/24 *7 days/ week, every 3 weeks, and otherwise at least 80 h/week on the rest of time. It was what was expected from a *just-a-normal-human* doing medicine. Burn out came insidiously. The brain became numb without noticing it and I lost my capacity to think widely, I was on automatic mode, like a robot, just because of the chronic lack of sleep and the high pressure at work. In Europe, its much more “ human”. I have fun at work, I feel like a human being again. That is priceless.

It's good to know that you still want to help others! Even though it is a tough decision to leave residency, you shouldn't have to keep doing something that you know won't make you happy in the long run. With your experience and work ethic, I'm sure you will be very successful with your plans!

I was once stuck between PA or MD and I chose PA because of the time flexibility and lateral mobility it allows. Like you, I’m interested in surgery, but I don’t want it to take away my life as I have other career interests and goals. Good luck.
I stumbled across this by happenstance. Wow, I’m baffled. I can really appreciate your high-risk mentality. Giving up half a million (an estimate) a year for a passion is really something. It’s clear that you’re extremely intelligent, so in your particular case I’m confident that you’ll do well. Two things to walk away with: risk is only defined and perceived by the man undertaking a task, and that failure to some degree in “high-risk” ventures is inevitable. Having grit is the most important component in a man’s personal success in any facet of life, period. I have failed, but I’ve also done things that ended up in books with my name redacted. So fail big, and win even bigger. You’ve instantly earned my respect for carving your own path. Best of luck to you.

This must have been a really difficult decision to come to. I'm inspired by your ambition to do what contributes most to humanity. You are going to be successful and impact lots of lives in a really meaningful way.
These types of people are so unbelievable annoying and full of themselves and because they have achieved some title in life they will have all these followers who think this type of person is so "special" and "talented" and look up to them and these are the last kind of people to be emulated or listened to. At least he didn't say the played out tripe of "helping people", oh wait he did say that. This guy is the last type of person who would ever really want to "help people". Also, he lucked out and didn't get saddled with $200K+/year in student loans. Don't follow this example, paying off those loans will take over your life, he is not a normal example. Change residencies but quitting is too much and he is just too fortunate to have been around people that can help his ideas out, he seems like he comes from a very entitled background. I do applaud him a little for trying to change medical education in the US because it is truly a self destructive system and produces physicians who are burned out, tired, and through the loans and fear of failing make doctors who are now greedy and selfish and realize the despicable business aspects of medicine only after their are too deep in it. It is unbelievable how many talented doctors run to the lifestyle residencies of dermatology or anesthesiology because they are burned out and want to make the most money in the least time and have time to enjoy it. They need to be oncology or even primary care but there is no "real money" in that and they would rather use their expertise in pumping upper class women full of botox or silicone. It is unreal that UK and EU are only in the 40+ hour work week that is how it should be, it's the old doctors who refuse to help change medical education and the medical administrators that are using essentially cheap almost slave labor resident physicians to pad their bottom lines. Medical education in the US in a word is fucked.

The mannerisms, the off hand comments about his surgical skills being commented as being great for a fourth year (nothing to do with the story), the fact that he's switching because its for "the good of the world". Please. I'm not doubting he wont be successful/ wont help people but lets not get ahead of ourselves here your dropping one diamond for diamond here; no way in hell your not just dropping residency for the passion of something else; their is money waiting at the other side of the fence. Timed bathroom breaks? Rise and grind millennial culture is going to be the early death of us. He must of have been a thrill to be around in school.

Have you ever thought of the fact that god made you go through all this process of getting into medicine and plastic surgery, so you can have a better insight on how to help people with anxiety, fatigue and depression in medicine?. If you wouldn do any of that, you wouldnt know what you know now and wouldnt have the tools and knowledge you now have. Remeber that is the journey not the goal that matters because is what teach us the most. Proud of you.

I fully support your decision. Let me give you a bit of perspective….I have been a registered nurse for 30 years, and I honestly didn’t know what I was getting myself into. My first semester of clinical was absolutely miserable and I wanted to change majors, but I got no support from my family or friends. I was even guilt tripped into staying in nursing. I honestly have never felt truly fulfilled in nursing and have gone back and forth about changing careers. I’m at a point in my life now where I feel ready to make the leap into a different profession and I have the support of nurse friends, as well as my kids, to make the change.
1st year into med school, and it already has taken toll on my health ( mental). I love the end products as in when I get good grades, when I think that I'll have the privilege to help someone delay their deaths. But I don't think I quite like the process maybe I'm lazy idk but I guess I'm not. I don't really like it. I'm in love with the end product only. Idk how things go here but Kevin sir, you'll definitely make a big fucking difference. I'll forever look up to you .

I was fortunate to earn a merit-based scholarship at my medical school, so loans are minimal.

@@kevinjubbalmd I've never heard of merit based scholarships for medical school (like anywhere.) The only merit my school offered was about $6k a year if you were at the top (which doesn't put a dent in your $200k direct plus loans.) I have heard of parental based scholarships which l find to be much more likely.

I totally agree with you that working all those hours as a resident is not necessary (I have anything colleagues that are residents in Europe and are great doctors working less than 50h per week) and it is harmful for the mental and physical health of residents. You have my support in fighting to change that!
The risk of entrepreneurship falls if you're taking the smart decisions and working in a disciplined way.
You seem to already be doing that. So in reality you aren't taking any big risks.

17:37 i cried!...few months back i sat down with my teacher and told him that i want to interview residents from multiple specialities and ask them how residency has affected their life positively and negatively...i even went on a hunt to search for former residents who quit due to work load and bring this topic to the table of chairmans and and all the higher people in medicine field so that a convenient decision could be made that can help our residents from burn out...sadly i had no time for a deep research...i am so proud of you for making it happen...All the best and i hope it works out😀☺💓
I know how hard it is to quit something you love. i also stopped from my residency but sometimes no matter how hard it is to let go of something we love. We have to follow our gut on what you think is best for you. I really wish you all the best in all your future endeavors. May you attain all your goals. I do believe things happen for a reason. We may not see it immediately but i know it will work out for the best. Enjoy your new journey ☺

Hearing your story about how you thought through pursuing both surgery and entrepreneurship would not lead to ideal results reminded me of the shaolin monks who say, "I am not afraid of the 10,000 strikes you know you've practiced once. I am definitely afraid of the one strike you know you've practiced 10,000 times." Becoming proficient in one skill is more effective than attempting to be great at multiple.
By pouring your energy solely into entrepreneurship, you will be exceedingly successful in that endeavor. I hope to also accomplish great results as I move into medical school and beyond. I am currently an engineer working full time but I am studying to go back to medical school while running my own business and doing contract work on the side. this helped me cut some things out. I just turned down a 40k contract for side work, and have started looking to hire people to work as assistants to take less workload. Thank you

Kevin this was awesome to watch. I'm a house officer finishing my first year of graduation and also running a social enterprise which helps get people into medical school as well as mentoring students for any career path. I've taken a year to do research and get a paper published in ophthalmology, the only specialty im fascinated by. But I'm discovering that I may be more an entrepreneur at heart and I heavily resonate with almost every single thing you've said, even all the things that other people have told you; time optimisation; and every single issue. Subscribed to you and I'm quickly approaching the crossroads you just crossed. Maybe I will be joining you one day.

Hey, Kevin. As a business-minded person myself, I can kind of relate to your struggle. While I have yet to start my PBPM, I see myself leaping by faith and instinct and making decisions others would view as "stupid." It's worked so far, and I am looking for a new research position in Psychiatry/Neuro/Psychology as my future specialty of choice is Neurological Surgery. I resigned from my new research position in the Dept. of General Surgery because the subspecialty of focus was not of immense interest. I have plans to build my company, and establish an interdisciplinary research center after NS residency. Right now, the goal is to ace the last few classes I have and get into Med School. Later on, I would need the surgical experience to test the innovations and develop questions as I go. Your path is actually the opposite, and I respect it.
