I always questioned why more steps aren’t taken to address sleep deprivation in residents. The rest of us are told to get enough sleep to fortify our physical and mental health but doctors in training seemed to almost be going through hazing when it comes to sleep. If you wake me in the middle of the night to do my job, you will not get my best work. I will make mistakes and I imagine that some residents aren’t performing their best either.
Exactly! Same with my med school actually.. assigning unnecessary paper work like fcking drawings and “personal story essays” what bs
I always asked myself that... It seems like med school students and residents are put through torture, and if they survive, then they are qualified to become doctors.
We got 4 hours of sleep a night for the first 2 years of nursing school. The medical profession is hard and I don’t think people any idea how vigorous any of the people who work in the medical profession train. We also have a serious shortage of doctors and nurses and Covid made it much worse…
Most of health care gets gazed. Health care is archaic and toxic. It’s getting better but slower
I was a nanny for two married fresh out of residency hospitalists. The stories I heard of their time in residency were intense. They told me how they were doing 48hr shifts and would be up for pretty much the entire time (routinely). Made me wonder the next handful of times I encountered doctors just how rested he or she was when treating me.
No disrespect but he gives me car salesman vibes. Nothing wrong with that - it seems like he’s focusing in on his skills by going the entrepreneur route
Totally agree with you.. He is a bit cocky to me!!
My first impression was, "Wow, what a handsome man!" But after watching a bit, he has nothing that is attractive to me because of his personality.
He is very good looking, is a physician, and that right there (heck, even without the looks) will guarantee that he has had his pick of any group of potential partners / adorers. The personality of those sitting on the pinnacle of revered / idolozed societal frameworks can go in this direction of happy arrogance, friendly superiority...ugh, he seems that way.
He has a frenetic energy about him that makes me think of the superficial pursuits of such successful people.
It is a cut throat and frequently ugly society at the top and there are so many societal strictures in those circles (regarding appearance, clothing, jewelry, accepted company & behaviour, etc.); he sounds ready to jump in.
Alas.
Everything he said felt like a humblebrag. Gross.
Ug I really dislike the car salesman vibe. I’m so glad to have found a dealer and actually a specific salesman that is just not like that.

Gosh, that voice. I’m happy for dr. Gary’s wife. I’ve said it before, I’m saying it again. She is a lucky girl. He’s got such a nice voice and temperament.

Kevin is such a tryhard finance bro. He’s perfect for that life and living chasing the high of investing and prioritizing money over people. I’m really glad he didn’t become a surgeon because he has the mindset of a business person, not a doctor.

I really love the psychologist skills of the Dr Linkov. This is a very human and empathic video, the professionalism is outstanding.
I'm glad he quit since his heart wasn't in it. I wouldn't do what he did, but his priority was something else. We all hear how hard medical students work for many years - 18-20? (?) So he knew what was coming. 🤷♀️
I feel like MANY top doctors I've seen are entrepreneurs (mostly thinking of dermatologists). I feel like Dr. Gary is spot on, a very intelligent and skilled doctor is likely to become an entrepreneur in some capacity as it is
Dr Gary didn't have the start Kevin did going into his residency and UA-cam channel. Kevin has already got a successful and cash flow business. Enough of a platform to start any business venture he chooses. And Kevin's business idea at helping other students get into residency has potentials to make him more money but I don't think that's where he intends to stop.
Think how long it would take Kevin to finish his residency, 5-6 years. At which point he'd have used up most of his youth on this and at the end of it he'd have suffered to get through the course, would he have the strength to pursue his entrepreneurial goals at that time?
Imagine you said to Mark Zuckerberg he should have finished Princeton. Kevin's true passion is creating a business and watching it thrive, why waste 6 years gaining skills and experience in a field that would affect his mental and physical health and at the end of the day won't be that much of an asset at creating a multi million dollar business . In 6 years he could network with multi millionaires, travel the world, own his own fate instead of taking a path that he knows where it would take him

All plastic surgeons do it for money. LOL! They make the most money in private practice.

@veron yes technically, but no. There is a difference between having a monetary incentive and being driven only by money. Doctors obviously like money, but which doctor would you trust more - the one who may chose the option that provides you the best result regardless of price/profit margin, or the who will provide any service you ask for, as long as you pay? Now, I know that sounds counter intuitive and like maybe I've said the same thing just worded differently, but that isn't the case. Doctor 1 in my scenario may tell you "I understand you want a full abdominoplasty (and that would provide him the higher profit), but I think a panniculectomy is more appropriate (and provide him less profit)". Meanwhile, Doctor 2 would give you the unnecessary abdominoplasty because he profits more, but it would be a harder recovery for you. Doctor 1 in my scenario would cut you off when you show an addiction to plastic surgery and are harming yourself with them, or using them as a substitute for therapy. Doctor 2 would continue to give you any surgery, every time you ask because the motive is the money and not your well-being.

My cousin is a surgeon and him and most of his surgeon friends do it for MONEY too lmao...
People need to talk more about burnout. I'm glad he found something he enjoys doing.
I had a health crisis right after my residency and while working on my Fellowship. I suffered from PTSD from the hellish disease, diagnosis, and trestment process including 20 surgeries within 2 years. I had to step away for awhile, and even now my career has had to pivot for me to allow more time for self care of my health and a better life balance. Healthcare involves so much physical energy as well as mental and emotional energy, then add a chronic illness on top of that plus so much debt, and it can be crushing at times. I'm getting to a better place and starting to build something special focusing on my specialty and reason for becoming a doctor again, but I did suffer from burnout of the culture of "the system."
I don’t know anything about the medical field but is doing 20 surgeries within 2 years a lot?
@@pyg9466 I apologize if I was a bit confusing. I didn't mean for it to sound like I performed 20 surgeries but rather that I underwent 20 surgeries in 2 years. On average that is one surgery every 4-6 weeks, including 4 spinal surgeries. There are definitely people who have had more throughout a lifetime depending on their circumstances, but yes that is a lot of surgeries, a lot of trauma and anesthesia and medication for the body to process and heal from. 💕

As traumatic as your health issues and treatment have been for you, I imagine that you can identify with the anxiety of being a patient. I have often thought that medical professionals have enjoyed good health and that a part of them lose tolerance for really troubled patients who not only have physical ailments but suffer from their unique insecurities. I have the feeling that Kevin would be looking at his watch and checking out his stock portfolio during the consultation.
@@bernadettedevereaux8694 You're right, I've had such an insight into the patient experience that it can be appalling. I know part of it is because we HAVE to compartmentalize to save us from the things we've seen, but some doctors are just arrogant assholes. I am incredibly empathetic and so passionate about advocating for my patients.
I spent much of my nursing career at unis and hospitals that had medical schools. I got to listen to residents discussing these topics and it was fascinating. I recognize everything you said today.
I know from my work experience that not only are parts of the medical field broken but the scientific community as a whole. Years of excellent research performed and either it’s not recognized by your peers or if it is, you’re only as good as your last publication.
Or (for the starters) the credit gets taken by a superior. Unfortunately this still happens.
Also in the medical field there’s way too much pressure of publication which decreases the quality of many of those publications.

I cannot relate
I spent over 20 years in hospitals and then a bit in biotech. Medical jobs are hard, and getting an MD is the academic version of doing an Ironman over and over for years. My time came to do something new, and while I miss it, I wouldn’t go back to a clinical position. I had always wanted to get my MD also, but then one day I realized that if I did it, I would be a middle aged resident drowning in debt. I had to let it go. I think that of his full passion wasn’t in plastics, then it was right to bow out. I had a friend do that after getting an enormously prestigious fellowship (only 4 taken per year) in a very demanding specialty and as far as I know, she’s not practicing at all. I think it’s sad, because so many years of learning are not being utilized. However, if it doesn’t make you happy, you only owe yourself the explanation for the decision. I hope he is able to make the changes he discussed. Mental health in medicine is barely spoken of above a whisper and that must change. Maybe he’s the guy to do it.
May I ask hoy did you ended in biotech from a clinical setting?
My brother was sports med and switched to general. Sometimes you strive for those competitive fields and it just isn’t what makes you happy.
I really appreciate how calm you are in reviewing his video. You are very fair and measured in your comments which I don’t always see from other doctors reviewing peers/would-be peers, etc.

To the people who can't fathom leaving medicine behind after so many years of working for it, please look up the sunk cost fallacy. The fact that you've invested a lot on something does not inherently add value to it. If something doesn't work out, or doesn't make you happy anymore, then you can just leave it.
I'm personally happy that Dr. Jubbal is open about his decision. I think alternative careers for doctors is something that should be discussed more often as medicine is such a traditional path.

It's sad to know that most people are going through self over-exploitation to become "someone", to become "something", and thinking of themselves more like an enterprise and not a person, with duties and responsibilities. It's sadder to hear it from medical students. I'm from Mexico and a very sad thing to see around is the lack of passion and ethical background when studying medicine, as well as a lack of responsibility and dignity toward patients.
I agree with most of the comments, luckily he channeled his efforts to another direction. Bad for those keeping it up with a lack of vocation.

I think what he means "on top" is being recognized, being known "by THE world". You (Dr. Gary) is talking about helping "people" ...one at a time ... where ONE/ EACH person you help may think of you as "g-d" this guy wants to be a KING without having to do with any of "his subjects". (I worked in Plastic Surgery for MANY years...)
Yes please have a mini podcast with Kevin. So weird to see somebody break against the tide of what success is supposed to look like to follow their own heart. Plus what he wants to do is have such value we don’t need broken exhausted nervous wreck physicians coming out of medical school
I think his "on top" is being for him on top of his game. Bringing his A game every day so he doesn't feel like a failure. He Max's himself out every day. 100+ hours everyweek is what a new entrepreneur should expect to put in at the beginning backing off once the company can go with the flow.

Totally agree, abrasive and a bit too full of himself. I'm sure there are better champions for changes in Med Ed than one who left the profession.
My very first impression is that Kevin is incredibly handsome then his fast talking style reminded me of those TV hucksters like the preacher peddling miracle spring water and I concluded that I don’t want a doctor who is so revved up. The intelligence, skill and stamina to take on this specialty are massive. I want my physicians to have those qualities but I don’t want her or him to see me as a dollar sign with legs. I think that I’m attractive but if my doctor just sees my face as a med school mannequin, that provider is not for me.

Huh, I never thought Medicine and Entrepreneurship could be mutually inclusive. Technically, anyone practising medicine in their own clinic is an entrepreneur. TIL!
he still has to trade time for money when he's operating a practice. I feel as though he is going for the 4 hour work week, where he'll setup a business venture and watch it become a passive asset earning him money and the rest of the time he can enjoy life. Then setup another venture and repeat until he's earning millions a year doing nothing and has a team that he overseas doing their job. When you trade time for money, you are limited at how much money you can make.
Also another thing to consider is he might enjoy the challenge of doing something not laid out to him. whereas if he carried on with plastic surgery he knows pretty much how his life will go.
I personally think he should have finished his residency and get qualified, but then again that would have been 5-6 years? I bet he plans to become a multi millionaire in that time with going full entrepreneur
My friend who is an Ayurveda doctor earned more than 1 crore rupees in second wave(40 to 50 days approx).
1 crore rs=$150,000.(USD)
He only had a place.What he did?
Hired his M.D Medicine friends for his hospital.
Gave hospital responsibility to M.D Anaesthesia plus ICU superspecialisation doctor(They are the one's who manage ICU's).
Which place he used?
He repurposed Multiplex for running the hospital.
Remember all the doctors who he hired were already having well paid job and not in dire need of second job.
He just mobilised caring mentality in health field for doing extra in case of healthcare emergency.
In short he created $150,000 by only investing around $15,000 in just one month.

Wow I have been looking everywhere for a reaction video or any online opinion like this!! I am currently in medical school and cannot FATHOM how someone could work so hard and commit to such a competitive field for so many years.... and then just leave! I have followed Dr. Jubbal's content for some time now, and I know he found a real passion for animation, creating youtube videos, and pursuing other entrepreneurial endeavors, but it still never made sense to me, how those could pull someone away from something they committed to already for such a long time. I always had a feeling he may have also encountered some real personal or health-related challenges which may have changed his perspective/reconsider continuing his residency which, of course, is very personal, and I don't think he owes anyone to disclose that in his videos. But I still think about him leaving plastic surgery all the time (as people say these days... he "lives rent-free in my head" lol) and from time to time I search online for an expert's opinion, so I am really glad to see your commentary on this. thank you for your insight!
Practice medicine is a way of life, being a doctor really is almost all consuming; so you better love what you do. Medicine is interesting and fascinating once you know/master enough of it, then it is enjoyable. Hopefully, one gets to be good enough during the training process to enjoy his work, or it would be hard to continue. There are enough doctors around who are barely competent.
Is it just me or does Kevin seem a little too egotistical to be a surgeon? I feel like he would only have his own best interests in mind and not the patient.

I’m glad he didn’t go fully into medicine to be honest with you. His values aren’t in the right place and he gives off massive vibes of just being in life for the money. I truly think that’s what he means by coming out on top.
I really like listening to Dr. Linkov speak; he’s so calm and analytical. And, after doing a bit of research, he’s apparently very good at what he does.

I think what he means by "on top" is as good as his career would have been if he stuck to his PS residency. In some ways I feel bad for him, because it seems like he made the best choice for himself at the time, but because he was in such an amazing position, that other people would kill to be in, he has to justify that. When people leave their jobs or school because they're unhappy, or they want to pursue a creative field, many people look at those people poorly. Sometimes out of jealousy and the reality is if he is happy he shouldn't have to compare his current career path to the one he could have had. Plenty of people are miserable and successful on paper (and in their bank accounts).
It also seems like he was in the financial position to quit. Many people don't have the choice after such a financial investment in medical school, to switch paths that late.

Dr L has a presentation/delivery that cuts straight into the veins.

But the Why I Quit guy comes off looking like why he wants join American Bandstand and skip beauty school try outs.
The proof is in the pudding. He says he wants to benefit people by being and entrepreneur. Yet being an entrepreneur in its essence means being competitive and working your project into the burnout zone too.
Perhaps he'll quit and become an entrepreneur who helps burnt out entrepreneurs?
We all need something to COMMIT TO
Once we have "points on the board" [which is what I consider being "on top" vs "not even in the game"] we can then manage how far we can carry ourselves before asking the coach to sub us.
This guy looks like he just wants to be some kind of pro celebrity cheerleader to the secondary market of hopelessness in academe.
Its all kind of huckstery with flash and gleamy talk that makes me feel suspicious.

I was told early on I had to be a doctor to follow in my dad’s footsteps. I looked at videos my dad had, and realized by 17 there was no way. I dont do well with blood and gore. Surgery. Even skin and human biological fluids and materials. Kudos to all the brave people. Its truly admirable. My dad is retired now. But i can talk to him about anything anatomical and he knows the ins and outs of that organs entire function and operation. Even unrelated to his niche.

Enjoyed hearing your perspective Dr. Linkov! While I do appreciate his transparency, it is somewhat unsettling that he has a company that charges pre-med and medical students exorbitant prices for test prep and mentoring. I don't think that's a fair or accessible approach to reducing burnout.

He seems like more business minded or organizationally minded rather than focused on assisting the patient. I'm in the education sector of medical services for the Department of Veteran affairs. I don't think his choice is wrong, just he has a different focus on the people he wants to help and affect.
1:15-17 -- WOW, look at how fast he can twirl his pencil -- for some reason I feel like he would be a fantastic surgeon of some sort--that speed is amazing. Listening further, it feels like he is also a type of business man that he could naturally do what he has loved from a young age--tutoring. Good for him.

Wow it's really sad that depression and suicide among medical students is probably a worldwide problem. I'm from Germany and we also have big problems with depression and suicide among medical students. It's really bad
Before PA school I saw that suicide is a huge problem among medical students and was so confused. About a month into PA school it made much more sense, unfortunately. I never had mental health problems until PA school. Meds are great though!

So this guy is leaving medicine to have a business advising people on how to have careers in medicine? Also residents, especially surgical residents, don’t have time to run a business and do well in their residency. Probably best he left medicine.
it's alot more about tutoring...he brings in doctors/surgeons or gets information from them so it's not just him. the fact that people judge or rather misjudge the way they do is what makes me not want to do anything where I don't put myself first....the man has worked very hard to get where he is...there are worse people out there like dr. death for example. get a life.
Thanks for the thoughtful commentary Dr. Gary. I think this guy made a huge mistake and he’ll regret it one day; he should have finished his surgical residency, and made his decision afterwards. Education is not a heavy burden to carry; there’s a zillion two-bit entrepreneurs out there, but way way fewer (board-certified) plastic surgeons.
Whew. Kevin is absolutely doing the best thing for society by pursuing business. No way would I want that guy near me medically.

Gary you are great. My opinion on the guy who quit, he couldn't cut the mustard and is using any number of excuses to compensate for his inadequacy.

Is there an emotional trajectory to residency? In a 4-year PhD candidacy-which should be a lot less stressful than med school/residency-there seems to be a trough the middle of year 2, when students begin to question their choices and the value of the work. Some people seem to lose conviction and wander off. If they get through that still enrolled, things pick back up; the focus changes year 3 (orals/research/fellowship) and again year 4 (dissertation and a light at the end of the tunnel).
Irrelevant but slightly annoying - he seems to pull out that pen in the beginning ro repeatedly show off and fidget with it. He's clearly very self aware🙄
He seems very immature and his manneurisms overwhelms his potential message, banging on about his legacy whatever that may be.
So esthetic surgery and the residency was'nt för him, I hope he finds peace with whatever choice be makes in the future.

For anyone to become a doctor and not have the patient's result as being the core reason for practice bodes poorly for the kind of doctor they will be. If he had mentioned changing people's lives or helping people feel better about themselves, versus just that it is high tech or intreprenureal, it would have been a bigger loss. Glad he didn't become a doctor.
He should get an MBA. Combined with an MD it will appeal more. But he sounds like he’s on a good path.
He is too hard on himself. Life is beautiful... it does not really mean that you have to be on top always...

Bein "on top" probably means building a lucrative start up because right before he mentioned that most start ups fail. So coming out on top i understood to mean that he wants to be in the small percentage of "best" start ups that actually make it.
Kevin could be more humble. He probably would ot be a good doctor as he doesn't seem to listen since he knows all.
He dropped out simply because not every one belong in the OR, long story short

I'd like to see some procedures done that show reconstructions or recovery from injuries---nothing too horribly graphic, thanks---but plastic surgery that focuses more on restoring function, for example. How plastic surgery can be used in more functional ways, less examples of vanity surgeries. Thanks!
I would think that being a plastic surgeon would be very stressful. There are a lot of patients with high expectations and sometimes they do not get the results they had anticipated.

My daughter graduated top in her class in neuroscience ( premed ) and is planning med school , and is preparing, but chose to take a little time off to work and volunteer in areas that would pertain. She has many friends who have been in or just got accepted. It’s no joke. A massive amount of work and dedication. Life outside is non existent! My daughter loves chemistry and brain chemistry. I can tell ya as a mom of three kids , my one kid is an airline pilot and he also had no life outside of schooling for awhile. He’s insanely busy. The high paying fields make ya work your ass off. Bottom line.

No matter what you do in life…you are guaranteed to experience burn out at some point. I don’t even have a job, im disabled i practically live in bed. But i create content for 3 different youtube channels each week, and once in a while, i create content for my own channel, all for *free and i get burned out once in a while. Its the act of doing the same thing day in and day out, and possibly taking on more than you can easily manage for too long that causes burn out not the profession imho. 😉
I don’t agree that no matter what you do in life, you are guaranteed to burn out at some point. Some people are better able to manage their time, energies, and priorities better than others. They learn how to pace themselves. For some this comes naturally.

I share your reaction to his choice of words about coming out "on top". It implies that people who make a different choice are on the bottom, which is part of the problem with the system he says he wants to change. Despite being an excellent student in undergrad and having many people tell me I could pursue med school, I chose the path of becoming an RN and then a nurse practitioner largely because I didn't want to put myself through the culture of med school and residency. Everyone talks about how toxic it is, how you practically get hazed- and then when they're done with it, so many (not all!) doctors treat healthcare professionals in other disciplines (even those with doctorate degrees) like they are superior to them because they went through a residency. It's not a good look from the outside. I'm happy with my path- I still get to help patients every day, and change people's lives for the better. Maybe I didn't "come out on top" by this guy's standards, but whatever! Who cares 😇
