Wow Dr. Brown is seriously the definition of class. Literally operated on a kid for no money because he felt bad about how he was feeling. Big ups to you man
Man, when Dr. Brown told the story about the gynecomastia case, it brought tears to my eyes. As somebody who struggled with their body image as a child, I can empathize with that kid and man I am not sure some people can completely comprehend how impactful that operation was for him. That was awesome.
This is the exact path I want to take into becoming a plastic surgeon. I start General Surgery residency July 1st. How I wish I could shadow Dr. Brown before I start this journey. This interview PUMPED ME UP! awesome work!
Dr. Brown is so down to earth and inspiring. This was an amazing interview. I love his answer about having dinner with his 5 year old self. I love that he didn’t go with the typical/expected answers for your lighthearted questions.
Hearing him talk about doing surgery for free is really inspiring. I wanna be a spine surgeon some day and I know I will be doing pro bono surgeries often
I was surprisingly happy when he mentioned the whole “psychiatrists with a knife” thing because I want to pursue plastic surgery but was struggling with picking an undergrad major. I ended up choosing psychology but was kinda iffy about it since i’m going into surgery.. now i’m really confident with my choice :)
To some this a petty issue but having a thyroid issue for 37 years: finally had my post Graves Disease lids fixed. (I 131 at the time) Love love love my plastic surgeon. I’m 68 now and ok with aging but not only don’t look crabby/ tired anymore BUT right eye had 50%, left 30% and had no idea how much field of vision I’d be getting back. Amazing. Grateful that’s all I’ve ever “needed”. Bless what you do. Retired nurse: 4 yrs scrubbed in out of 41 years. Dang managerial changes to scheduling. Lol Loved it.
Thank you very much! I am a medical student at the University of Toledo College of Medicine & Life Sciences, and currently, I am interested in pursuing plastic surgery as my future career, and this video provides some great inspiration!
this is THE coolest doctor everrrr. cool, humble, positive, energetic and got really great stories what a guy 👏 ive watch all the series this is gotta be no.1 I liked that he might I've done IR cuz that what I'm interested in hopefully I become as cool and great as this dude
Thank you so much for the videos you don’t know how much it has helped me. I used to cry my self to sleep and your vids have inspired me I’m 2 year forensic toxicology student here in Australia
This was an awesome video man. I’m applying to med school this year (as an older guy) and it’s really inspiring to see someone so relatable that’s so happy and has such an incredible perspective.
What a beautiful inspiring soul...i loved every minute of this interview, so laid back and natural,,,Dr Brown is an epic story teller too, God Bless him and his family !!❣
wow!!! this is my fave episode of the Q and A series! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻I caught a glimpse of Dr. Brown from Dr. Youn's posts even before .. but this interview made me admire him all the more... his answers are on point...thank you Dr. Brown and ND MD for inspiring all of us!💕☺️☺️☺️
This was a good one, love to see someone who trained that much despite applying to med at 27. Love it! Could you get an oral surgeon on for those interested in dentistry and surgery?
Dr. Richard I aspire to be like you, what an interview. I was not so sure about going into plastic surgery but you have convinced me. Thank you for the great interview. Andy thank you for delivering such great content you are helping a lot of us see our future path clearer ☺️
He is such an inspiration! I am 24 and graduating with my BSN and want to pursue medicine. I have 4 classes to take after I graduate for medical school prereqs and hope to work as a nurse during that year and apply to medical school by 26-27.
Awesome video as always! I was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate so I've had a lot of operations😂 the last plastic surgeon that I had locally for this type of operation is an incredibly kinda man, my mom was telling me how all the nurses said they were nervous cause he was well known from down south(Im in Alaska) and that he was such a nice guy. I have adhd and it is so true that people on a NT spectrum think so differently, we are always wanting to learn, so I love these types of videos.
P.S. Dr. Brown, if you're not familiar with Temple Grandin, check her out. She's a very innovative amd multi-faceted autistic woman; one of the fascinating things she talks about is modes of thinking. For example, she thinks in pictures. Who knew?
What a lovely interview! I’ve been planning on going through with OMFS, after dentistry and medical school, this interview has brought me so much relief (I’ve been worried about the timeline and whether it would be worth it) Dr. Richard, thank you! (And thank you ND MD for the questions :))
Let's go! Looking forward to this. Last interview I saw w/ Dr. Brown was back in December, 2020 w/ Dr. Ryan Gray on his eShadowing series. Hoping to see him on the podcast too - he has a very interesting story!
@@doctorricky for sure. Major respect to you for sharing your story about your sons. I have an older brother who has autism and I can totally relate! At first it is difficult managing the responsibility and you wonder why this fate is on you. But in taking up the responsibility, you come to understand they have a unique vantage point on the world and their innocence in that sense is pure. You really get to love them for who they are and in the process of helping them adapt to the world the best you can, there's a part of you that is better off for it. And that truly is a gift that you can't not appreciate.
@@maghen2972 in a sense interventional radiology/cardiology procedures are vascular procedures bc they intervene via venous/arterial systems. For interventional radiology there are many combined residency/fellowship programs. You can also go through radiology residency first. If you want to go into interventional neuroradiology, you can also start off in neurology residency, but it's not as common right now I believe. For interventional cardiology there isn't a combined residency/fellowship program yet, so you do complete IM, then cardio fellowship, and then interventional cardiologist fellowships. Other than these pathways to specialize in vascular procedures, vascular surgery is a separate field/training process. You can either go through general surgery track or a specialized vascular surgery track training to get there. You'll also be learning interventional procedures, but you will deal primarily with surgical cases related to the vascular systems.
@@davidlakhter thank u so much, I'm doing an elective rotation in IR the upcoming summer, I found out about the specialty thro dr mike and it seems like something I would enjoy. Hopefully that helps me figure out what pathway I want to take
That's really good one , I love how he showed the operating room which make me super super motivated 😎✊🏻 I wanna become a cardiac surgeon so could u please also make video like this with cardiac surgeries please please please Btw everyone in this channel appreciate your efforts⭐🌟 Thank u and hope u will be the best life saving doctor , wish u alll the best💜💜💜💜💜
5:30 yea interventional cardiology is also ~8 years bc it's usually 3 year IM, 3 years cardio, 2 years fellowship (now you generally do two fellowships to be competitive). Now it's probably more competitive because to get into a good cardiology residency/good fellowship thereafter, you'll prob complete a research year or chief residents year. So this path can be up there w/ neurosurgery in training duration 25:00 that's insanely lucky! and what a case for last day on trauma call 27:00 you should have Dr. Young on at some point to address their online beef haha 30:30 that's quite the unique answer! 38:18 yeah the business of medicine sucks 38:50 this is something people should learn about earlier on in undergrad before commiting to such a journey. this would aid in the moments when you may feel burntout/have imposter syndrome by helping you have focus and know who you are
Hey Andy, Thanks for another amazing video. You'll efforts being a Medical Student in enlightening us are extremely appreciated. I'd request you to post some 73 series' with International Medical Graduates from various backgrounds. That'd be very fruitful.
I like surgeons and nurses they do a lot of work and doctors too, but I don’t know what kind of doctors do a lot of work. I’ve been figuring out things too and it’s very cool.
Doc said that we don’t remember when we are young. I remember when I was in the hospital for a whole year (6 months premature) pneumonia/deaf from one side😭 and other complications 🥲 it was traumatic af
I know Dr Richard Brown had a low GPA before he decided to do medicine, I was wondering what he did and how he was able to get into MD School. I know there’s DO’s but I want to apply myself for MD school first. If i do DO I wouldn’t have much of a shot at doing anything related to surgery.
Oral and maxillofacial surgery and then cosmetic surgery training is 7-8 years. Neurosurgery is 7 years. Interventional radiology is 7-8 years. Cardiothoracic surgery is 7-8 years.

Have a BFA in illustration. 😉
Damn he works between 35-40 hours? Thats nice. I didnt know it can works with this amount of work hour a week. In my country, everbody says you work even mor than in a hospital. And there you work about 60 hours a week
Can someone explain to me how going to bed at 8:30-9 and waking up at 4:30 translates to 6 hours of sleep? If he goes to bed at 8:30 and wakes up at 4:30 that is 8 hours.. 9 is is 7.5 hours..
At the point he is talking about CrossFit he says I wake up at 4:30 every morning (queue my eyes rolling). He then proceeds to say he only needs 6 hours of sleep, but then says he goes to bed at 8:30-9. They cannot all be true.
