    The most practical build for my parents always was my old rig after building a new one. Prebuild and tested for no costs, can't beat that.

    • @billwiley7216
      @billwiley7216 2 роки тому +8

      I do the same, pass my old rig to family members that just do browsing, normal online type of activities.
      Actually this system I am currently typing this on will be one of those systems it is a 6700k, 16g 3200mhz ram, 1 tb adata ssd, 1tb samsung ssd, Seasonic 650 w PSU and I will swap out the current 1070 gpu and just put in a 570 gpu from an even older build and the case is a Cooler Master Haf XP EVO.
      I will finish my Alder Lake gaming rig build within about the next week or so and make my current 10700k rig my everyday browsing rig.

      I usually keep the upgraded video card and power supply to reduce the initial purchase price of parts for my new rig when passing the old rig to my parents. 😉 For some reason, I like hoarding spare parts instead of selling them.

    • @billwiley7216
      @billwiley7216 2 роки тому +1

      @@christopherschmeltz3333 Problem is usually the build I gift is around 4 years or so old and now something like a PSU that was an adequate amount of watts for the old build will not cut it for the newer more power hungry hardware.
      Also again same with the video card as by that point they are a couple of generations old and if looking for top performance with the new build you are sacrificing performance of the rig by retaining the several generation old GPU which in some ways negates doing the build.
      If you are a gamer generally the newer series GPU will have a much larger performance impact in most games than a CPU a few generations old as long as the initial build used a good chip to start with.

And i don't think those APU's would have any issue with decoding any Streaming Service video's from Netflix, etc.

    My husband does a lot of DVD burning (home videos and backup copies of his video edits) so the reason I ended up buying the particular case I did for his build 2 years ago (A Phanteks Enthoo Pro) was because it actually had those bays and the price was right. It has a SATA internal DVD burner. I've explained to him since that it's probably the last time, since in 4+ years when we plan to replace his rig again I expect it to be tougher to find a halfway decent case which still has those. But I also told him that external DVD burners are a thing and will work just fine for his needs. Only problem is, the Blu-ray Disc Association, in their infinite fucking wisdom, decided that the only (legal) way one would be able to play UHD blu-rays on a desktop would be to have an Intel processor from 7th to 10th gen (11th and higher doesn't support SGX and, thus, won't support the DRM) and to have a PC running Windows 10. Total cost: Around $600 USD
    The Challenger S II mid tower was actually surprisingly well-thought out for cable management for what it is. I had no issues whatsoever getting a fan controller and extra SSD tossed behind the motherboard tray. I dealt with the blue USB 3 cable by putting clipping off the connector (don't do this unless you have the tools to reconnect it securely and properly) and putting black heat shrink tubing spanning the length of the cable. The Rosewill 700W psu i have had black mesh over the cables so i didn't need to do anything with it.

    My parents landed up with an overkill "low end" system simply because last gen parts are still stupidly expensive over just buying a new Ryzen 5600X. They had a A8-5600K APU with 8GB of RAM that wasn't cutting it. I had an extra X570 board forced upon me by the Newegg Shuffle that I wanted to use. So a 5600X and 16GB went in. They already had a Quadro P400 card to run two 1440p panels since the old APU's iGPU couldn't handle anything that fancy. It's all stealthly packed into an old Antec NSK4480, running cooler and quieter then that A8 APU ever did! Even still has the DVD drive, just because. I still need to find one of those drive bays with USB 3.0 ports so it has modern connectivity.
    The biggest problem I had was the 480w power supply wouldn't work with the new board for some reason, so I had to drop a cheapo 750w unit in there (smallest I could find local).

    I have a 1300X with a 1050ti my wife was using since the parts came out and just got replaced with a 5600X and 3060. The old machine is now with a friend's son who is playing games just fine on it and more than happy with what he has.

    I would have gone with an MX500 on the SSD. Just because you are not gaming with it does not mean you should'nt be concerned with the duty cycle of the SSD. Having storage that will last twice as long before it starts having problems is worth the price difference between the BX and the MX. Unless it is a scratch disk holding only temp folders and swap, you should avoid the BX line.

    Re: 6:12 I never knew that was an in-house brand. I just figured it wasn't too good from many mediocre reviews! Thank you for this vid.

    i did a build for my grandmother about a year ago and her only requests were able to do facebook so she could talk to us grand kids, listen to her church music and be small so she could easily move it at 80 years old. i ended up building her a ryzen 5 3400g in an asrock deskmini x300 with 16gb ddr4 3200 and a 500gb western digital blue sn550. My one splurge was a Noctua NH-L9A cou cooler. she was happy with it and was surprised how small it was and it didnt cost a whole lot

    Jay C - Yes they do make CD Drives with sata. I ended up reusing a Bluray drive from my old system in my new system. Due to the case not have any 5 1/4 drive bays I have run a long power/sata cable out the back of the case and the drive sits on the top of the case. You can get external drive bays, which are very expensive, almost as much as a Bluray drive itself. This solution maybe jank, but I used the Bluray drive for when I backup my Bluray moves, which then go onto my Unraid storage server.

    What is awesome about this build is that is so simple yet so upgradeable... that machine will last for a decade or more!

    Oh man, that cable management is so "my Parents PC" that I can't even. I remember that, manging cables in old systems always ended up like that.

    Having the latest and greatest computer isn't always needed, my parents have my old i7 4770 system which they just use for browsing the internet. I have two older i7 4770 & 4770K running, one as my Unraid storage server and the other running my security cameras.

    We chose the same case for our grandma builds. I went b450 DS3H, stuck a 3200g in it, a 250GB M.2 SSD, and a PSU and called it a day. I think I spent about $350 on it. Was about a year ago. The PSU is questionable as it is the Gigabyte P450b. Technically not listed as one the exploding ones but I don't trust it and plan on pulling it at some point. The power draw is so low though that I am not even sure its an issue more of a peace of mind thing.

    For a practical PC I love the Fractal Design Focus G (Mini): good to work with, nice looking, very affordable and space for DVD/ BR-Drives 🥰
    Without the need of DVD-Players etc. I would choose the Fractal Design Nano S. No window, sound isolation and two good fans 🥳

    For Christmas I built my dad a pc like this, he had a windows 7 desktop HP from like 2009.... Few friends helped out with parts and he now has a pc with an Intel 9400k and a quadro k2000, with blue and orange lighting for Detroit tiger theme 😎

    These sort of low budget builds are a lot more interesting, I think, because the budget constraints makes a builder think more carefully about part selection and where to divert resources towards, depending on the use case.

    I love having my 5.25in bays in my Corsair 780T. I wanted a Blu-Ray Reader/Writer and that's what I got. Yes, I do use it for DVDs, I'd use it for Blu-Rays if I had a better monitor, but it's hard to beat a 4k TV with an Xbox. But it was only a $90 Blu-Ray Reader/Writer. That's nothin'

    Building a computer as cheap as possible to meet the user's needs is what I love to do the most. Knowing what they want to use it for and building upon that is so much fun to me. I really enjoyed building my grandmother a PC when they tried windows 8 and it was too different for her and I could get her a windows 7 pc way back when and recently building my girlfriend a PC using the PSU and GPU from an older PC to make a decent gaming rig for 400 bucks. I even got her a pink PC case although she wanted purple I couldn't find one for super cheap.

    Yes, they make DVD drives with a SATA interface. I put one in my 2020 build, they still have use cases!
