Quad channel DDR4 is nice, but again a better predictor not only optimises the cache utilisation, but also the RAM access!

Games are also becoming more optimized as time goes on and my favorite games are getting more into indie. So for veterans like me, it doesn’t matterthat much...Xeons are still solid builds, and is much better for the environment
Great video, but I'd like to see a dual cpu build. It's quite hard to find these days one 2x e5-2xxx workstation on how they fare on gaming and editing
I recently bought a 2nd hand items as Machinist x99 (PR9) and Xeon E5-2699v3 for 100 euros. Previous owner mentioned that previous setup with these items were set to 8 cores only visible due power issues with that motherboard. As I watched your video (part 2) I noticed under voltage option to be key feature to have all 18 cores to run at the same time (with set 3.66ghz each) - I thought if this might be the "power issues" with my setup now..? I haven't been able to test this setup yet as I lack perfect case yet, will have suitable shipped to me next week from now on - I can post my achievements and notes about the process here later on :)
im still rocking my 5820k since i bought it 6 years ago, even that now i use a Ryzen 5900X, i just cant throw away my X99 platform, when it came out it was just too damn good, even to this day is still worth a pick, im just waiting for the V4 version of this Xeon, which has even more cache and 22 cores to get a lower price, that thing will be a beast for the encoding and rendering video.
Look at miyconst's channel, he has a video where he explains that with the turbo boost unlock exploit on the v3 xeons, they are actually more powerful than the newer higher core parts.
I love xeons!! Ive been building budget gaming systems with 2650v4 and 2680v4 generic mobo combos 40-50 bucks, full system prices under 200 bucks us with rx580 2048sp reliably! Look for third or fourth hand 580s at aroubd 40 usd for close to 150 usd totals.

Something about using server CPUs for Gaming or home use it's so cool. Specially when you use older mid 2000s cases. I wonder If we will ever see cheap threadripper/Epyc CPUs in the future?
first gen epyc's are getting quite cheap already! the 32 core epyc 7551p can be had for ~$330 on ebay right now. biggest issue is probably the motherboards since they go for over $400
Since X99 boards are pretty darn expensive for the vast majority of us, it would be interesting to see how well this chip can be tuned on a Dell or HP or similar machine. Not that you would pair this chip, it would probably be a 14 core 2680 v3, but if we could find a good (tunable) workstation, that would be a treat.
i have the workstation x99 board , and i found out the hard way , the on board NVME connector is only hard wired at 2X instead of the 4X i thought it was. you should remove the nvme hdd drive and utilize a PCIe X16 or X4 add in card in the top PCIe X16 slot to fully utilize the nvme`s rated speed i have the E5-2698-V4 20 core which is a beast
I got two of those about a year ago with a jank dual socket motherboard, and it has been running 24/7 ever since as my personal server. verry happy with it for the price
@@yasirrakhurrafat1142 x99 is definitely a beast for it's price. As workstation and also as a gaming rig. 2696v3 has no competition today at it's price point for the CPU+board+memory combo: 8300 CPU-Z score and 14500 Cinebench R23 score with a TDP of just 145 Watts. 2133 MHz is possible on DDR3 with a good motherboard. But for stability I run it at 1866 with lowered timings, because I hate BSoDs 😁
Was waiting to see the build with this CPU. Pretty amazing performance out of such an old chip. Tempted to upgrade my 2678 v3 in my server now. When you do part two, to give this build the best chance, I think you need to go a modern case with a larger AIO. The 120mm Intel AIO will probably struggle once you start tuning. Love that retro case though. Those huge side fans were awesome.
I just got the same CPU, with an ASRock X99 Extreme mobo with 64GB RAM from a client for free, so I have only bought a few m.2’s for it, a PSU, skeleton case and 1660 6GB. This will be my sim setup rig so my main system can be used regularly again. Good video!
I did the same a few years ago, resurrecting a 2012 Dell, dual Xeon workstation and getting the fastest xeons that would fit in it. But I just bought a Comet Lake (10th gen) gaming PC, and the more current processor will do about 60% more work single threaded or about double the work per core, full load vs. full load. So what adds up to 32 threads of gen 2, e5-2690 only does double the work of 8 threads of gen 10, i5-10300H. At least theoretically according to geekbench scores. The laptop is still on the way so I haven't tested it yet.
Happily humming along in 2021 with Dual E5-2667v2/Z9PA-D8/128GB ECC DDR3 @1866MHz/RTX2070 inside a 20L SFF Sliger Cerberus X case. Been absolutely loving it for 3yrs or so. Great build! I just finished building my first cpu, which has a x5675 CPU, and GT 1030, although the GT 1030 bottleneck is some newer titles, reason I chose it is because of the price and also your vids about it! Thanks for making these videos keep it up!
200mm side panel panel fan?! I’d like to see those return on some cases nowadays. It would bring some variety from the cookie cutter tempered glass side panels.
Wonderful video... hope part two arrives soon. And great work by the way. Xeons are impressives pieces of technology. I run an Xeon-E5 2687w v2 (25MB L3 cache) on an X79 with 1866MHz DDR3 paired with an GTX1080. Its fast, reliable and even fast enough for VR gaming. Your rig here tinkers me. The big problem with powerful old gen cpu's are motherboard costs. Not that long ago I ran into a problem when my Z87 mobo gave up the ghost combined with a 4770k. Sourcing a replacement mobo was expensive. I found the most cost effective solution was to sell the cpu and 16gb of HyperX fury DDR3 1866mhz ram. Then buy a Ryzen 3600 with 16gb of 3200mhz crucial Lpx DDR4..The upgrade included an Asrock B550m pro 4 mobo and with the money back from the old parts the cost was neglibable.
@@JDMeister For sure, the point I was trying to make was that even old gen 6, 8+ core cpu's might be cheap but the mobos aren't. To underline that it is well worth noting how expensive it is to get a replacement for the old i7's...

As someone who has done this kind of stuff, keep in mind, there are some cool benefits, AND some SERIOUS drawbacks. For example... Yes, you'll get a bunch of cores for a low price. But more isn't really better, unless you're going to be using them for virtualization and other stuff like that. It won't benefit you in video editing after a certain point. It won't benefit you in gaming after a point, etc etc. You're better off with a lower core count and higher base/boost in the same generation, maybe a 10-ish core (Wikipedia has great charts for all the SKUs). ALSO... Keep in mind that while something like a higher clocked CPU in this generation will still be quite decent, you're still getting pretty old architecture. IIRC, Haswell only has access to 2 lanes for NVMe and some other drawbacks I probably can't think of... Knowing all that, what you're basically getting here is a solid replacement for something like a Ryzen 1st gen processor, but again, those drawbacks are definitely there. So don't be fooled JUST by high core count. A ton of cores just don't benefit an average gamer.
I'm doing a similar build right now except I'm using the e5-2696 which can be had cheaper but still has the 18 core with hyperthreading and it boosts to 3.8ghz. SO excited about a performance budget build!
Looks like a great build Bryan. That old case still looks pretty slick. One negative comment, didnt like the music and volume on this vlog and turned the sound almost off. Honest opinion. Cheers, Mon from Brisbane
I have two X99 platform Xeon rigs. One is an ASRock X99 E5 2699 V4 (22c 44t) w128GB of RAM, the other is an Asus X99 Deluxe with an E5 2683 V4 (16c 32t). I've been playing around with Xeons & X99 for a couple of years now. ASRock boards will allow use of more RAM with the V4's. Asus boards seem to be limited to 64 GB with either V3 or V4 Xeons. The ASRock boards also have USB C standard (depending upon the mobo) while with Asus you have to use add-in parts. For video transcoding the Xeons barely go above idle temps, my i7 5960X ran close to twice as hot under load with the same cooling with the 2683 V4. The 2699 V4 runs even cooler with identical cooling. It's been my experience that 103.4 BLCK is the highest both rigs will go with 100% stability. I have the 5960X and an E5 2683 V3 14c 28t (my first X99 Xeon CPU) stashed away as spares now. The V3's max out at 2133Mhz RAM, the V4's 2400Mhz. I'm not a gamer so I have no input on them for gaming use but for A/V work the V4's are my choice. I went after Xeon's that had been listed on Ebay for a while and made lowball offers until I got what I wanted for the price I wanted to pay. I also have two Asus Sabertooth X79 rigs with E5 1680 V2's in them running at 4.5Ghz with 64GB of RAM. They never miss a beat in daily use.
That PC case is called "Enermax Phoenix Neo". I bought that case new back in 2010. The massive airflow is good for gpu overclocking. The huge side fan alone is worth more than $10 USD. I miss that case. I used the Zalman CNPS5X.

at 0:48 you say it having 35mb of L3 cache is a benefit no other CPU carries even in today's standards, but the ryzen 5 5600x and the ryzen 7 5800x have 32mb of L3 cache, while the ryzen 9 5900x and 5950x have 64mb of L3 cache, so they have around double the cache per core as well

Can we talk about case MFG's actually built cases for correct airflow and now they threw it all out of the window for tempered glass. Games are also becoming more optimized as time goes on and my favorite games are getting more into indie. So for veterans like me, it doesn’t matterthat much...Xeons are still solid builds, and is much better for the environment
that case itself is interesting enough to complete viewing the whole video. Kudos, you are doing a great job.

@Klip One ??? We were talking about the song used in the video here...

I really love watching these Xeon builds. more please... :)
Oh! That is a monster machine and for the GPU as well as love the video man. Keep it up.
i have the workstation x99 board , and i found out the hard way , the on board NVME connector is only hard wired at 2X instead of the 4X i thought it was. you should remove the nvme hdd drive and utilize a PCIe X16 or X4 add in card in the top PCIe X16 slot to fully utilize the nvme`s rated speed i have the E5-2698-V4 20 core which is a beast

@@yasirrakhurrafat1142 x99 is definitely a beast for it's price. As workstation and also as a gaming rig.
2696v3 has no competition today at it's price point for the CPU+board+memory combo:

2133 MHz is possible on DDR3 with a good motherboard. But for stability I run it at 1866 with lowered timings, because I hate BSoDs 😁
Was waiting to see the build with this CPU. Pretty amazing performance out of such an old chip. Tempted to upgrade my 2678 v3 in my server now. When you do part two, to give this build the best chance, I think you need to go a modern case with a larger AIO. The 120mm Intel AIO will probably struggle once you start tuning. Love that retro case though. Those huge side fans were awesome.
I will check it out, it tops out at 3.6ghz single, so might not need a bigger AIO, testing now.
If I'd still have my old Rampage V Extreme, this could be interesting.
ASUS on x99 was top notch too. I think they left easter egg bioses in here too, doing more testing now.

Wifi6, 5-port USB 3.1 w/ USB-C, NVMe SSD PCIe cards net me pretty much everything I’m missing from modern platforms.
All in an SSI-CEB formfactor.
What's the 'best' cheapest XEON gaming bundle? cpu, mobo, ram, etc.
That case is SICK!

Great build! I just finished building my first cpu, which has a x5675 CPU, and GT 1030, although the GT 1030 bottleneck is some newer titles, reason I chose it is because of the price and also your vids about it! Thanks for making these videos keep it up!

Wow, lovely to see the return of Price-Performance!! King.

4770k it's not an old gen powerful CPU, it's just old.
@@JDMeister For sure, the point I was trying to make was that even old gen 6, 8+ core cpu's might be cheap but the mobos aren't. To underline that it is well worth noting how expensive it is to get a replacement for the old i7's...

Will be interested to see how you tweak it though Bry! 😊👍
A ton of cores just don't benefit an average gamer.
stop bullshiting
YES ANOTHER OLD XEON VIDEO
That case is a gem
I'm doing a similar build right now except I'm using the e5-2696 which can be had cheaper but still has the 18 core with hyperthreading and it boosts to 3.8ghz. SO excited about a performance budget build!

That case is WICKED COOL.
That PC case is called "Enermax Phoenix Neo".

at 0:48 you say it having 35mb of L3 cache is a benefit no other CPU carries even in today's standards, but the ryzen 5 5600x and the ryzen 7 5800x have 32mb of L3 cache, while the ryzen 9 5900x and 5950x have 64mb of L3 cache, so they have around double the cache per core as well
True that, though I forgot what kind of l3 cache they used, I think the Xeon l3 cache might be more expensive IIRC.
@@techyescity that’s true, the L3 cache speed of this Xeon CPU is around twice as fast in reads but has double the latency, though I’m not sure how much of a difference that speed will make in practice, especially considering the IPC and clock speed improvements over the years
