The first verse (written about 200 years ago!) is about a musket, which at that time had serious defects: sometimes it did not ignite, the aiming was very inaccurate and the shooter was sometimes blinded by a lot of smoke. The second and third verses were written by the singer / lead guitarist (Bill Bartlett) and are about a very famous (white ^^) pinup girl in the 50s: Betty Paige. Betty paige was called "black Betty" because of her extremely shimmering, raven-black hair and was the inspiration for these two verses ^^ (statement by the then 78-year-old Bill Bartlett himself in a telephone interview - also to be found here on YT...).
The song was first recorded in the field by US musicologists John and Alan Lomax in December 1933, performed a cappella by the convict James "Iron Head" Baker and a group at Central State Farm, Sugar Land, Texas (a State prison farm).[11] Baker was 63 years old at the time of the recording. The Lomaxes were recording for the Library of Congress and later field recordings in 1934, 1936, and 1939 also include versions of "Black Betty". A notated version was published in 1934 in the Lomaxes book American Ballads and Folk Songs. It was recorded commercially in New York in April 1939 for the Musicraft Records label by Lead Belly, as part of a medley with two other work songs: "Looky Looky Yonder" and "Yellow Woman's Doorbells". Musicraft issued the recording in 1939 as part of a 78-rpm five-disc album entitled Negro Sinful Songs sung by Lead Belly.[12] Lead Belly had a long association with the Lomaxes, and had himself served time in State prison farms. Lead Belly was first recorded by the Lomaxes in 1933 when he was approximately 44 years old. John Lomax helped Lead Belly get the recording contract with Musicraft in 1939.
Ram Jam's version is a remix of a 1973 record by the band Starstruck, which was released locally in Cincinnati. After Starstruck broke up, guitarist Bill Bartlett connected with the producers who had produced his previous band, the Lemon Pipers, and was signed on the condition he buy the Black Betty master from the other members of Starstruck. He then went to New Uork and organized Ram Jam. The remix was released in 1977 and became their only hit. None of the other members of Starstruck continued into Ram Jam, Bartlett reports that he didn't even see this video for aout 40 years, when his dentist showed it to him. They were asked to go out to Long Island one day while they were recording Ram Jam's first album because someone in England had requested a video, so they did the shoot and went back to the studio.
We have them to thank for the survival of a long list of traditional songs, including "House of the Rising Sun", which has roots in the highwayman ballads of 17th century Britain. Berthold Brecht and Kurt Weill's Threepenny Opera and it's breakaway hit "Mack the Knife" also came from this tradition. It's amazing how long this stuff lives, and how intertwined the whole culture is with music from centuries long past.
And I heard “Black Betty had a child, bam a lam, the damn thing gone wild, bam a lam, they weren’t none of mine, damn thing gone blind”…they came out w a revolver fashioned after the musket but it was know to backfire and blind the shooter when it happened. Talking about concerts in the yard reminded me of my uncle's band setting up in his buddy's barn, swinging the barn doors open, and just a hundred or so neighbors and friends coming over to have a blast. This was in the '70s - great memories of my childhood.
Where they knife in 2020, in Kansas City people started playing out in the yard during quarantine
ya! This is played at sporting events too.
Yeah, it’s played at every Chiefs game in Kansas City
I came here for the music and saw that beautiful pillow in the background. I'm a Dotte that lives in south Texas now, but is so proud of his hometown Chiefs and especially of the fans. We've been at games with freezing rain falling when our boys couldn't win for the life of them. Love to see the support. Anyway, this is my first time here. I love your vibe and your sense of humor. I appreciate your insight into the music too. I've listened to reactions from singers, but not someone who understands the production. That knowledge is invaluable. Thank you!
Thank you so much. Yeah I love doing these reactions and go Chiefs!
Look up how they made this song worth a laugh every time
I definitely will. Thank you.
There is a kick ass extended version of this. I’ve was a rock DJ on Dallas radio forever, now on the internet. Glad you love the music of my life…
I’m gonna have to look for that
Nobody has more arena songs than Queen...We Are the Champions, We Will Rock You, Another One Bites the Dust, to name a few 😊
"Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Radio Ga Ga" (Live). I think we are listening to the same people. We are fortunate.
Lynyrd Skynyrd for the South 🤷🏼♀️
Yeah, pretty much everything they did was an anthem
Black Betty" (Roud 11668) is a 20th-century African-American work song often credited to Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter as the author, though the earliest recordings are not by him. Some sources say it is one of Lead Belly's many adaptations of earlier folk material.[1]
I’ve been getting some really cool history lessons on here. Thank you.
Whoop Whoop.
Wish you were going to be at the gathering this year!
Whoop, whoop. I wish I was too.
@@KrizzKalikoOfficial Maybe next years Gathering 🙏. We need to see some of the old skools from Strange and sub noize. Huge thank you to people like you, Tech, Prozac, Jelly, All of Mayday and ICP.....all of you and more have helped myself and my wife with the mental struggles. We both have been going to seek help with the proper people. Took me awhile to accept it but man what difference it has made. I would have never gone if wasn't for all you. THANK YOU 🙏. MCL WHOOP WHOOP
The Eagles are GENIUS guitar harmonizers! Hotel California solo at the end is fire🔥♥️
Yeah, that’s one of my favorite songs
Black Betty Day At the CFL'S Calgary Stampeders training camp every year for as long as I can remember. Blasted on repeat for the entire day. It has evolved to have many versions played now not just Ram Jam.
Yeah, like I said, it’s played at the Chiefs game every Sunday as well. It’s a staple there.
People love ram jam in the sports world.
First caught you and tech and jelly on creature. My son played welcome to the midwest. You and p were reacting to watch the world burn . I'm with you
Thanks for checking us out. I got a lot more to come.
MY YOUTH! I grew up with bands like this playing in the front yard in the 70’s & 80’s! Cool memories! My Dad was a band leader for over 50 years so we always had music & 5 of us kids played instruments & sang too🥰🎶
Right on. Thank you so much for commenting. I hope my kids think I’m a cool dad for doing music too.
Subed, loved you on BP & With Jelly Roll!
Thank you so so much for the love
"Putting his cream in a little coffee." 😂
I'm 💀.
Yeah, excuse my comedy. I get carried away.
@KrizzKalikoOfficial Never apologize for having a sense of humor! Hubby and I love it.
By the way, last night we watched you and your lovely wife reviewing Paradise by the Dashboard Light. We laughed so hard, especially when you grounded your son at the end. Oh my goodness, oh my goodness.
Have a great day!
If you like guitar harmonies, check out the band Avenged Sevenfold. Probably the best modern day guitar harmonies.
Omg yes!!! Synyster Gates 🙌🔥💯
Yeah, I almost got to work with Avenged Sevenfold. You were supposed to possibly tour with them along time ago.
I love Avenged Sevenfold
@@KrizzKalikoOfficial they’re awesome live!
@@KrizzKalikoOfficial btw, All That Remains is another band with some killer guitar harmonies. 🤘
This channel is fire love it.....subscribed. Love the fact Kaliko just started it not so long ago.
One of the best one hit wonder songs ever. Ram Jammed it out.
They didn’t have any more songs that were big?
Ive been a long time fan of you and Strange Music as a whole. Coming here seeing this and seeing your interaction with the community? Maaan you are world class!
Saw you guys 4 times in Milwaukee and it is not enough times. Yall know how to party

I still cackled 😂
Krizz i have been a fan for along time. I love the idea of you doing reactions. Please keep it coming.
appreciate you
I love it. Glad you came to our channel.
Everyone who thinks black betty is about a gun, wrong! The musket you are referring to is a Brown Bess, a smoothbore musket used from the 1700's until the mid to late 1800's
There’s been lots of arguments about it in the comments
Wikipedia has an entry for Black Betty: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Betty. I have also heard folk tales where Black Betty was the name of one or more whiskey stills. One of which went hay-wire, and that "Bam-a-lam" was the sound it made.
Wow, that’s interesting
Japanese women are currently dominating the guitar harmonizing rock ❤ Check out lovebites😊 Holy War live in concert😮
Yeah, I’ll have to check them out
Oh really! That’s awesome. I have to take some time and look at some of those ladies play guitar.
you are a trip ! you make it fun to watch with you. your experiences , knowledge and story set this apart from others .keep it real and speak your truths
BLACK P IN THE HOUSE❤😂
Oh yeah, that’s my boy
Im so excited for more of your music with all the new stuff you are listening to, and the way you and tech mix dif influcense is amazing. Im all for this.
Absolutely.
Classic!!!
Definitely a classic Michael .
0:38 seconds in, and I'm glad you're doing Ram Jam. I'm white as hell, love this song, love oldschool rap and hip hope, but I still don't understand why so many black folks INSTANTLY love this song. It's like 99% in my own experience when the listen blind to the song, it's amazing... I love it.
Well, I think we all love this song for the same reason.
I guess black fox love anything that says Black in it. Lol.
Southerners, we invented all the cool stuff. Rock n’ roll, the food we eat, blue grass, blues, jazz, all came from the south.
"Southerners". All those things came from Black folks. (Yes, even bluegrass.)
Yeah, the south always had very creative people in it. Thank you for your comment.
The food we eat? That's clever, every other culture "invented" their food also. 🤣
I remember the Gong Show chuck barris hosted it and they would hit the gong To send people off..gene gene The dancing machine was a fan favorite❤
Yeah, I loved it as well
Black Betty is a musket and the son was a musket pistol which blew up in faces. Not sure if you’ve heard Bring the noise- Public enemy and Anthrax. If you have then try I’m the man by Anthrax.
I knew you looked familiar, Tech9, in K.C.MO! Home of the Chiefs, and the Royals. I from there, when the moved the Kansas City Kings to Sacramento, now the Sacramento Kings, I moved right along with them. This is a great song. First time I heard it was at my friends house, her brother was listening to it. I LOVED the guitar, and drums in this piece. Just seems like it should be a little bit longer.
I absolutely love your music Mr. Krizz! I just found you here and I am thrilled!!
Thanks for listening
I love playing Black Betty while walking thru my city!! I can’t say why…I just don’t know, but it makes me happy!! ❤
You are an incredible creator and I look forward to seeing what you do.
Can’t get enough Krizz! You got me hooked! But no shocker there. Been hooked since I first heard you years ago! Much love man. ♥️
I was at a The Hu concert in Boise a couple years ago. They were playing random music over the PA before the show started, and then this starts playing. It was a complete knee-jerk reaction, and that fuckin place just came alive. Totally spontaneous.
Oh yeah. This song, always rocks everybody.
I remember watching the Gong show as a kid as well. :D
I love this song myself, glad to see your reaction.
Yeah, that was an awesome show with Chuck Barris
Thank you Krizz for your music, 10 years ago while try to confront my mental health issues. I stumbled across unstable and a host of your other songs. And it was the first time ever I heard, put into words what I was feeling and experincing. And I knew then I will be able to work this out, like the equation to help me find the answer. So again Thank you.
My brother is 54 & still gets together with his band buddies to just jam in the garage. A lot of fun!
You have to do that. Everybody needs an outlet.
Check out the version of this song by the band called "Spiderbait."
Dude ... smart as hell anaysis of this song. Subscribed
Thank you so much for your subscription to my channel Lurch
I'm not even done watching the video and I'm subscribing. I'm a huge hockey fan and unfortunately I haven't heard this played at any arena. Love your humor. You're funny af 😂

You're AWESOME KRIZZ!! I HOPE YOUR CHANNEL GOES COLOSSAL!!
Omg I didnt expect THE Krizz Kaliko of all people do be doing reacts like this.. Much love you ya, my brother. I found your music through your collabs with Tech and Prozak from back in the day. You got some serious talent, I hope these past few years have been kind on you!
Much respect, first time tuning in my friend. Thank you, great job
Thank you, Garth. So glad you joined me.
Iconic song, heard it by itself and in all different kinds of media.
You a classic too Krizz, coming to NY in the future? How do you handle suggestions? Via comment, donation, or just whatever you're feeling?
Came over from Black P’s page. I like your history with Music
Yo Chris!! Black Pegasus did send me over here and im looking foward to seeing more of your reactions. This is definitely a banger classic. Just wish the song was longer.
I grew up with this song, memories of driving through LA jamming to it.
Krizz I lived in KC for 12 years, now I am in North Carolina. It’s very refreshing to hear KC references! I am a metal head who I have explored rap/hip hop through channels like yours! The comment about harmonizing is something that metal bands continually do to this day. It will be great that rock bands would do it too! Anyways, great content and you got a new sub! Go Chiefs, Go Royals, Go Sporting KC and Go KU!
Let’s goooooo 🔥🙌
Sending some love from Argentina!
Good for you! Glad I found ya
I followed after watching you and BP a while back bc you been around a while and know your stuff & you’re damn entertaining! Extra points for mentioning The Gong Show 😂

Glad to see you enjoying the music I grew up with! ❤
It’s so dope. I love this music.
Not seen a backyard party since my youngest daughters 16th birthday party 20 yrs ago at our house. We had friends who were in a band who played. The cops showed up and daughter was so excited .....she jumped up and down saying, omg cops at my party ! 😅😅
They were super nice. It was only 6pm. They went to the neighbor (grumpy) and smoothed it over and came back over for cake 😊
Your voice is awesome.
Just discovered.
Subscribed ❤
DUDE! BWAHAHAHAAAA! When you said "puttin' his cream in a little coffee" I literally spewed my drink across the room, lmfao! Best reaction statement ever!
Always puts a smile on my face seeing a newbie to this track. Its just the way we were back then😂 Ok not strictly a newbie but great reaction😅
Yeah, I heard it at the Chiefs game in Kansas City, but never paid attention to it like this
I love you lol. Been listening to you for years. This is great to see you doing reactions :) Strange Music
Shout ouf from another KU fan
