Bill Bartlett (lead singer/guitarist) is now 80. He was interviewed about 2 years ago and said Black Betty was rifle manufactured in Birmingham Alabama. The rifle had a 2nd edition (Black Betty had a child) and it was inaccurate (damn thing gone blind). That's his take.

The story goes that they got money to shoot a video, but spent it all on weed. So they shot at the yard of this house

I appreciate your willingness to listen to this music. I've listened to this song since it came out, and it is on my playlist for every party. It's a short song, so if someone doesn't like it it's over quickly, but for those who love it, it's instantly recognized and they start to move to it. Thanks again, peace 💚

Thought I'd edit this to make a suggestion for you. If you're not familiar with the song from Led Zeppelin titled "Black Dog", you might want to give it a try. Appreciate your channel.

This track has been used in several movies, the game Guitar Hero and been sampled by MANY other artists…including Tech N9ne in “Slam Jam”.
Lead Belly was originally credited for the song almost a century ago although there were much earlier recordings. Since then though it has been rewritten by several artists who put their own spin on it…with the ’77 Ram Jam version being the most popular/well known.
    🙂🎶💯🙏💜

When the band wanted to make a vidieo they asked the record company for $600 and they spent it on beer and Weed and shot the video in the back, backyard of one of their families houses. A black Betty was a flint pistol from the days of the American revolution.

The song "Black Betty" is a 20th-century African-American work song. The origins of the song are thought to date back to the 19th century during slavery. Some sources say it is one of Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter's many adaptations of earlier folk material. Others claim that he adapted it from even earlier versions.
The earliest recording of "Black Betty" is thought to be from 1933, when it was sung a capella by James Iron Head Baker, a career criminal who worked in a Texas prison. In 1939, Ledbetter commercially recorded the song, which didn't gain modern day popularity until 1977 when rock act Ram Jam released a version with slightly modified lyrics

Black Betty was a gun. A flint lock musket.

I was a teen when ram jam came out with this, also, there's 1 thing people need to understand, in on song stanza, Black Betty had a child, dam thing gone wild, she said: worry not a mine, dam thing gone blind. (now, how can a gun have a child, and also say a worry not a mine)? And also, back when I was growing up, the term shakin that thing always meant a woman shaking her butt...I guess you may have to contact former band members to see if they meant a gun or a gal.

About 10 years before this song, Bill Bartlett (vocals and guitar) was part of another one-hit-wonder band. The Lemon Pipers performing Green Tamborine. Bill is the guitar player with glasses and fringed jacket. ua-cam.com/video/NBFY1-eEhdU/v-deo.html

Rumour has it, the record producer gave them $500 to buy studio time to make this recording. They spent the money on beer and weed so they just recoded it i someone's back yard. There is a longer studio version out there that has extensive guitar solos.
This spnh, with different words has been around over 100 years. It was first recorded in the 1930s by Leadbelly.

Record company gave these guys $500 to film a video. They spent most of it on weed, beer and this party in the yard then decided to film this video. This song is a remake of an old blues song about a civil war era musket that was very unstable. The soldiers who used this gun nicknamed it "Black Betty".

Leadbelly recorded this song in the 1930's, but it's probably older than that. Black Betty referred to a rifle, and the bullet was her "child". Ram Jam never had another hit, but it was Our.Party.Song!

This song has a long long history.....You could spend hours researching all the history of this song. This video was recorded in 1977 on Long Island, New York. The lead singer is Bill Bartlett, he was the lead singer in a band called 'Starstruck' prior to being the lead singer in this video with the band in this video. Ram Jam did not actually play this song.... they just filmed it to look like they were playing this song. The music in this video came from the band call StarStruck with Bill Bartlett. Also, the music is totally from the StarStruck album.... but they did some heavy edits to that StarStruck song to make this song/video.....and yes, Bill Bartlett was in both bands... he purchased the rights to this song from the StarStruck, from his former band members, and then created a new band called Ram Jam....Bill Bartlett is NOT the lead singer for this band (Ram Jam)... actually Myke Scavone is the lead singer for the band... but obviously not in this video... Myke Scavone is the guy clapping his hands on the left side of video....(Left of Bill Bartlett)
This song is actually a country music song..... check out Starstruck Black Betty....
He is singing about Betty Boop... Betty page is a cartoon chick that was well known in the 1950's, and was known as Black Betty back then ... he just plain ol thinks she was sexy....

No offense but it drives us nuts when people stop and start these every ten seconds. It's very very very annoying, why don't you guys just play it and listen and then react, we want to see your reaction to the video not five second skices if it, sorry , just had to say it. No offense

Don't take what I said too seriously, hahahaha There are others who are much worse and stop and start and stop and start and stop and start, then they start all over again. It's just something I thought I'd mention, no biggie. After all that is why we watch. To get your ( reaction TO) the video/song, not to watch the reacter pause and talk and pause and talk without even letting it play for 30 seconds. Haha. Just a pet peeve I guess. Haha
