People don't realise how perfect this song is - and its stood the test of time.
Everything he did stand the test of time
So many epic one liners in this song. “They’re sharing a drink they call loneliness….. but it’s better than drinking alone” has always spoke to my soul.
That’s a great line but many reactors miss it because they’re paying attention to guy grabbing the waitress’ butt.
And the piano sounds like a carnival and the microphone smells like a beer!!!!
It’s in my lyrical Hall of Fame.
ha, came here to write this line. One of the greatest lines in a song ever written
I also love George Thorogood. "When I drink alone, I prefer to be by myself." Love it!! ❤
My dad smoked in the K-Mart while I ate chili cheese fries. Mom shopped. 70’s & 80’s were a different time. Please watch more Billy Joel. ❤
i miss the kmart and fred meyers diners so much.....good times!
Ha.. i remember at like 6 going into the convenient store for mom to buy her cigarettes. I'd tell them what kind and hand them the money, and they'd put a pack of cigarettes in my hand with the change.
@chrislancaster Yes.. freedom to choose. I'll point out though, that it isn't uncommon that the regulation standards position is the dumb position.. In that case, it's from to be smart.
Going to the BINGO hall with my Dad and MawMaw and the smoke started at 3 feet from the floor in a thick fog. The stuff we remember.
Sounds like a day with me and my son at Sam’s Club/Costco
I have been to 4 of his concerts and he stops playing and the entire crowd sings the last chorus altogether. Such a magical moment
Saw him with Stevie Nicks in Chicago just a few weeks ago and was blown away by his live show. Wish I could've afforded to catch one sooner.
Been at three, one of them his world tour with Elton John. Both of them legends.
Also remember smoking on a plane back in the late 80s/90s
That seams like it would be absolutely unbelievable
Sounds like an amazing moment
"...when I wore a younger man's clothes", "...as the smile ran away from his face", "...to forget about life for awhile"
Incredible lyrics!!
Billy Joel is so versatile and his catalog is huge! And yes, I am old enough to remember when smoking was allowed EVERYWHERE, including planes.
I still see the ashtrays in Plains welded closed
Yes, with a non smoking section, which I never understood since everyone breathed the same recycled air lol
The song is originally from 1972 or smthg and was actually his breakthrough song. It is entirely autobiographical, all the people are real, the „waitress who’s practicing politics“ even was his first wife. The video was shot later in the early eighties, when he was already famous (and it is a cinematography masterpiece on its own.)
Did not know that was his breakthrough song
When I was in high school, we had a student smoking lounge. You could smoke even in the hospital. Funny thing is, now that tell us how bad it was for us and that we were really stupid for smoking,,,,, but every other commercial on tv told us these things were good for our nerves and healthy for us. The same people who got us hooked now make fun of us. Giving up smoking took every ounce of strength I could muster. Smoked for 60 some years
I remember those days as well! Crow!! We even had a jukebox in the smoking lounge. We played Drift Away at least a thousand times in high school! Haha! Had a smoke in January of '78 in the hospital room right after my son was born too.
Our smoking lounge was outside. They did not want you out there if you were not smoking. Had to be 18 to purchase, but was allowed at school with any age verifications. I was 16
Get this , the year before I started maybe two , the students could smoke in the courtyard in the middle of my high school .
But by the time I was a sophomore we couldn’t smoke anywhere on school property . 😂
@@myowndrum286yep I started high school in 80-81. And I got the years exactly right . That’s when laws changed . Clearly federal laws lol
My Great Grandmother was a nurse(she never smoked)but practically everyone smoked including ppl with lung conditions. And you're right doctors, nurses, families, smoked in the lounge.
My Great Grandmother was always checking her white cotton gloves because all women wore them along with a matching hat before she put them on and then was careful to remove any ash on them.
Pale dude from Florida here, I saw you and tech in Pensacola 2012 at The Vinyl. One of the best concerts of my young days. I brought several foreign exchange students that were friends, even today they still have never forgotten that show.
Krizz thank you for your quality content!
New York State of mind live is a must. Billy smokes at the piano. Sax player kills it.
It has to be the live at the old gray whistle stop
@@shirleybuffington6420Old Grey Whistle Test
I didn’t know he smoked
This song is a true story of how Billy Joel started his career. ❤❤❤ And I very special THANK YOU for keeping me entertained for years.
Introduced to you on Black Pegasus show really enjoy your reaction. Thanks from a 78 year old Detroit suburbinte.
🔥🙏
Thank you so much for paying attention. I got a lot more coming.
Same with me! Both BP & Krizz have great channels and when the 2 get together.....better than great 👍
I was introduced to you on Black Pegasus and decided to check you out right after. I am enjoying the journey of getting to know you a little better. Thanks for bringing us along on this musical journey.
Thank you for coming on my journey with me. Make sure you subscribe so you can see all of the fun stuff I’m gonna do.
"We didn't start the fire" Was 'Billy's' Tribute.
Tribute to what? Or who, if that's more accurate.
👁🗨👁
No doubt I didn’t know that
This song came out in 1973, and the video was done in 85. During the 80s, MTV was getting huge, and making music videos was the thing to do for many of the artists from that time. Great times.
Thanks for the reaction. ✌️
I miss MTV
Smoking days have changed for sure. I was a bank teller in the 1980s, we were allowed to smoke in our windows while waiting on customers. Great song, great reaction!
I bet everybody was relaxed
Love Billy Joel and this song and pretty much all of his stuff. I'm old enough to remember being in smoking restaurants, bars, bus station and airport and airplane
Yeah. Those were the days.
As well as playing the piano, he actually is also playing the harmonica although they don't show it in the video.
Of course that’s him playing the harmonica. He’s the most talented man ever.
Next to Roy Clark 😂❤
I worked at McD's in the late 70's (High School) and there was a little tin ashtray on every table.
They must've just switched to those (I still have a small stack of them! Lol), but in the early to mid-70s, a lot of restaurants (McD's included) had glass ashtrays with their logo on the bottom. I have at least 1 of those from McD's, Shoney's, and Jerry's! Ceramic/glass coffee mugs, too! Lol
I smoked on a Greyhound bus & in airplanes, while grocery shopping, ...and in my hospital bed!! And even worse, my doctor sat and smoked while giving me results, etc. 😂
I remember those ashtrays at McDonald’s. Ha ha ha Dang!!!!
The "la-la" chorus is the old man trying to remember the melody he's forgotten.
The greatest part of the song
I’m old enough to remember smoking on an airplane, in a restaurant and even in big box stores like Target or Walmart and the malls! Yeah, I’m that old!! Love your channel!!
1970 kid here so yessssss I agree❤
LOVE ME some BILLY JOEL!!! GREAT catalog!!! Great musicianship, great lyrics - just GREAT MUSIC!! ENJOY, KRIZZ!!! :) LOVE your REACTIONS!! HUGS!
Many bars play this song at closing time and usually everybody sings. It's pretty fun.
I'm 67, and enjoying your journey! I remember smoking in the hospital when I had my children and doctors were encouraging people to smoke, they thought it was good for you back in the day! I'll come along for the ride when you do "Uptown Girl" Great reaction!
Yeah, I’ll have to look up uptown girl and yeah, those were the days
@@KrizzKalikoOfficial Thank you for the reply! Well, I'm here for it! Best of luck Krizz!
I have just discovered you,my friend and I'm enjoying your reactions alot. I'm a 61 yr old checking out rap and hip-hop for the first time ( though I've known of and Loved Run DMC since I was in my early 20s).Keep up the awesome work. With love and respect from Maine USA ❤❤❤👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Billy is God-tier music. So many many bangers
100% God tier music
I remember when Bank Tellers smoked at their windows. Also in the 60's and 70's nobody complained about smoking or claimed to be allergic!!
I have been a billy joel fan for most of my life. This song turned 50 last year. I have been to 3 or 4 of his concerts, including when he was touring with elton john.
I remember when you could smoke everywhere. I used to hate going to a restaurant & they would seat me on the edge of smoking and non smoking. I was so close & could smell the smoke.
I enjoyed your reaction.
The live version of "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" is incredible.
My boy was telling me about it
Billy Joel was one of those that I loved every song on the album.
Yeah, he couldn’t miss
This song is so awesome! You have to love Billy Joel. Love your reaction!
Thank you so much. Yes love Billy Joel.
Thanks for the chuckle... Bill Joel with hair....
I first saw Krizz in the music video Target practice with ACal, Brodnax and Demon J. I was like, who’s this guy? Man he’s talented and goes hard!!! All these guy’s styles are so different and creatively unique. I love discovering new artists!
This reaction channel’s Poppin too ! Krizz has a fantastic sense of humor with appreciation for all genres of music and artists. A true artistic professional . ✨💫🌟💐
Thank you for checking me out. Target practice is a lot of fun to do. And yeah, this reaction channel is about to go sky high.
I am 56, and I remember I was in the hospital for about a week when I was about 9, and they were allowed to smoke inside lol
wasnt that long ago you had to smoke in certain areas in hospital corridors
Yeah, a lot of people are saying they remember smoking in the hospitals back in the day
Everyone in the stadium sings every word. Not just the chorus- EVERY word! I know because I’ve seen him live at least 5 times. Even once with Elton John on the same stage with dual pianos. It was always amazing!
Saw him in concert with my mother at the Boston Garden, when it was still called that, floor seats and we were all standing on seats, lighters in both hands singing every word and Billy sang none. ...was awesone.....he has one of the deepest rabbit holes to go thru
I'm 71. I remember smoking on airplanes. I remember walking straight in, finding the gate, and walking out to the tarmac and boarding the plane. No security, no bs. Stew checked tickets at the door.
yeah, I remember when this was a free country.
I'm from Canada but I remember that in my 20's I went to Nigeria with my driver's license and birth certificate no passport 😂
I remember being able to smoke in the lunchroom at work or at your desk.
Yeah, well, times change and you're still whining. Doing anything to make life better for everyone?
@@karlweir3198 When I was in the army, I never had a passport. A US Army ID card would get your into pretty much any country in the world. Now, passports are required for active duty troops...
I remember one international flight I was on as a kid had a smoking section and a non-smoking section….the division was the center aisle😂.
Speaking of smoking indoors, when I was 15 and living in the UK, I went to the movies with two of my friends who smoked, and I sat between them. The girl sitting in front of me had her hair teased up in a bouffant style, with a lot of hair spray. When my friend on the left leaned in to get a light from my other friend, they lit her hair on fire. It didn't flare up, luckily, but burned like little sparklers, and smelled awful. We all three were blowing on it, when she turned around, glared at me and said, "I suppose you think that's funny".
Haha. That’s a great story. Thanks for sharing.
This song came out in 1973. I was in junior highschool. This is up there with my all time favorite songs .This was the number one song that year. Now a days Billy Joel plays the music and the crowd sings the song. I'm a lung cancer survivor who got cancer from second hand smoke so not allowing people to smoke indoors is a good thing
Nice seeing you to react to these oldies but Goldie’s
I’m 63 and I miss the days when you could smoke at work and in restaurants. On the way home from school I’d have a smoke on the bus. 🖖🏻🇨🇦
Yeah, crazy days. But awesome.
Scenes From an Italian Restaurant is my favorite Billy Joel song, would definitely recommend if you haven't heard it. Much love Krizz, been listening to you since 2008
I'm 71 years old and I remember cigarette lighters and ash trays in cars, too.
I do remember smoke filled bars when I was 21. I always hated sitting anywhere near the smoking section. I quit smoking in 2004 and even when I was a smoker I never smoked in my home and didn’t want to sit in a smoking section at a restaurant. I remember as a little kid that they had smoking sections on a plane, which was always was funny to me since you’re all trapped in the same tin can so it’s not like the smoke isn’t going throughout the rest of the plane. So glad we don’t deal with that anymore.
Live version of "New York State of Mind" from about 1978 on the program "Old Grey Whistle Stop". The song was written as a tribute to the music of Ray Charles and is jazzy and soulful and my favorite.
I grew up in a town that he has a song named after it’s called Allentown and he’s talking/singing about the Allentown I grew up in in Pennsylvania!!! Such a great song!
I have performed there at a place called crocodile rock several times
Krizz❤ Love ur cool reaction n unique take! Just subscribed! There r still some smoky dives in Chatt lol a rarity for sure. ✨Enjoy ur getting closer to the classics journey!
I only gave up smoking a year ago but it’s the smoking section (such as they are now lol) that I miss the MOST.
ALWAYS had the most fun meeting smokers even in latter years while stuck outside in the cold in a narrow alley away from the restaurant entrance. Lmao.
I used to sit in the smoking section and restaurant sometimes just to make interesting people
My husband contacted Billy Joel when my father-in-law was dying, he offered us front row tickets. Unfortunately, he didn't last that long and we didn't feel right taking the tickets without him. He sent us an autographed photo. Great guy!❤ Oh yes, I remember the smoky bars, sections at restaurants, concert halls.
The smoky everything, lol.
I Love the piano solos. I playnamd use to sing as well so i love to hear a piano and just someone singing. Just them alone. Billy Joel does this BEAUTIFULLY. i gree up listeming to him. My pops LOVES HIM❤
This needs to be watched or listened to with no interruptions. The build up is part of the incredible magic of this song.
He's got just that amount of extravagance. Tinged with his accent and that playing. Perfection!
Checkout Only the Good Die Young that song was my life theme back in my 20's and 30's. My favorite line from that song was, "I'd rather laugh with the sinners than die with the saints. The sinners are much more fun." After we ordered at a restaurant back in the day, we'd either time our food getting to our table with the time it took to finish a smoke or get tired of waiting for it to come and just about the time you were about to light one the food would arrive. On every one of my birthdays since I can remember my mom would tell me the story about while in her hospital room waiting having contractions and about ready to give birth to me, she would be having my grandma lighting cigs one after the other for her and grandma didn't smoke. My grandma told me that after I was delivered, she went home from the hospital and had a nicotine headache for the rest of the day.
Saw Billy last year live … still AMAZING!!! He still has power in his voice and hits all the notes . Absolutely incredible talent
I’ve never seen him live. I would love to James .
You could smoke literally everywhere!! I remember waiting extra long in lines when dining out for a “ non-smoking booth” which was nothing more than a little partition and some didn’t even have a glass divider. They were worthless. I couldn’t deal with smoke while eating, but I had no problem going into nightclubs where you couldn’t see 2 feet in front of you. It looks like they’re running a heavy fog machine.🥳😂
In my HS, students were allotted smoking breaks
The good old days
in 1984 i shattered my knee playing ball had pins n etc done to it.spent a month in the hospital had a carton of smokes n an ashtray right next to my hospital bed.you could smoke anywhere back then.
Smoked in the smoking room on the Labour ward in hospital while in Labour with first child, 1994. This was Ireland back then. We were are mad as hell when in 2004 we became the first country to ban smoking in indoor places. Wasn't long before we became used to being able to breathe inside, especially in pubs. I can still see some old pubs here that no matter how many times they've painted the walls the tar still breaks through the paint.
I don’t smoke, but we probably should bring that back
One of the greatest songs ever written. Billy is incredible and this song is just one of those that is timeless and most people can relate to the feeling of the scene and images he sings about. You know a song is well written when the song conjures up images in your mind of the story being told.
I definitely can relate to it. Thanks for commenting.
I remember smoking everywhere born in the 50s. Ditto I’m with ya never smoked but it never bothered me. Cheers🍻
I remember being a little kid & hearing Billy Joel for the 1st time. He was such a massive influence on me. I was learning to play piano & I felt like all the cool kids were learning guitar. Discovering Billy Joel was a revelation & helped me appreciate that you could be a successful musician regardless of instrument as long as you put in the work & we’re determined. I think he was probably my initial reason for pursuing music as a career. You should check out his USSR Tour. It was ground-breaking because at the time it was such a huge deal for an American musician to tour in the Soviet Union. I admired him a lot for that too. Great reaction Kris to a great song. xx
I’ll check out the USSR thing. Thank you so much.
Smoking section was eating after the dance club, after doing beer runs all night, playing funky co medina. Thats why the smokin section was fun😂🤙
"Goodnight Saigon" is an amazing gut punch of a song from Billy. From the helicopter blades cutting into the piano to the restrained frustration building at the end of the song, goosebumps
For a REALLY cool throw back to a time even before Billy Joel "The Longest Time" is an absolutely beautiful in a deeply nostalgic way
Yeah i remember in hospital you could smoke
People used to also smoke in hospitals, when they go visit their sick relative or friend, they'd be lighting up bedside 🌬
Fire reaction man 🔥
Love your reactions, got here recently watching your reactions with Black Pegasus.
There's a concert he did where he did Piano Man, where he sings, plays the piano, AND also plays the harmonica on a holder around his neck. He is so immensely talented. Try his video of "Keeping the Faith." Constant references to growing up back in the day. So fun!
Billy Joel is so great that other great performers look up to him. One of Garth Brooks' biggest hits - "Shameless" - was written by Billy Joel. The amazing Chris Stapleton performed Shameless in a Garth Brooks tribute concert and brought Garth to tears. Such is the power of Billy Joel's songwriting. Billy Joel's song "The Downeaster Alexa" (great song) is named for his daughter with supermodel Christie Brinkley, who makes an appearance in the video for "Uptown Girl".
Had no idea Billy and Garth were connected at all
Billy Joel
It's A Matter Of Trust
We were allowed to smoke every where, including doctors office, hospital's, grocery stores..Yep everywhere. Thanks for your reaction..
One of my very favorite memories of being in New York City is finding a tiny little piano bar and listening all the staff there who have the most amazing voices, aspiring Broadway, stars, pounding out these classics with everybody, singing along in the best mood. 🥂 🍻
Billy Joel wrote the song "Shameless" that country music singer Garth Brooks sings. Whenever I worked at the hospital back in 1988,they had smoking and nonsmoking rooms at the hospital.
Subbed. I’m happy to have found you. I’m going thru a life struggle. Watching your reactions to music I grew up with is healing.
I'm not trying to comment on every video, however you just reminded me of how well you can sing as well. You've got some major talent, and sometimes it seems that your the glue to any collaboration you do based on your wide range of skills. It's really cool for me to get to see this youtube thing for you to start up, because your doing something we all appreciate. Your talking about influences and how music is so powerful regardless of the genre. There are a lot of great stories out there, and the most accessible ones are in music. Appreciate what your doing.
i love that you are doing the classics. This is what I grew up on. Never checked out rap/hip hop til I saw a Tom MacDonald vid. That introduced me to others, Like ACal, Jelly Roll, etc. That is also how I found out about you. So I'm about to go down the Krizz rabbit hole.
Krizz tracks I dig... Unstable, For Your Loving, Willing To Smoke with Rittz, Girls Like That, Areola, songs with Colt Ford. Any Krizz from the Strange Music days is fire. I've seen Tech, Krizz and Kutt together on stage like 8 times. Love that shit. Also, if you like metal and hip hop together, check out Backwordz and Reddstar. I'm stuck on their song Do It Again. Great bands.
@@deadbeat-vc9kg thanks for giving me a starting point
YES! I was one of those punk rock kids smoking in the foodcourt! 🤣 Man were times definitely different. We did have fun.
100% remember the vibe from smoking sections in restaurants, planes, busses and we used to torment this poor piano man at an Irish Pub in DC to play this! EVERY TIME!
I love hearing your stories. It's always nice to hear where people get their influence or "behind the scenes" of how they come up with what they do now.
Canadian here in Toronto, I'm old enough to remember when we could smoke in the office at work, bars, clubs, restaurants, every darn place. Then in about 2009, no smoking inside public spaces and we had to stand 9 metres away from the door (s) when we went outside to smoke...we still have to, to this day, it's the law!!!
I have a friend who is a novelist. I printed out the lyrics to this and gave them to him as an example of how few words it takes to write a great story. He was impressed.
I remember smoking in airplanes, doctor's offices, college classrooms, and even hospitals.
I remember when the pubs allowed smoking.
When I was 17yrs old, I bartended at an Irish Pub, (the old Sod) and anytime this song came on, you couldn’t hear it over everyone singing along. It would always give me goosebumps.
You just brought back a flood of old memories.
The smoke would kill my eyes, so after every shift I’d have to used Visine eye drops. But every time I got pulled over, (I drove like an idiot back then) the cops would think it’s because I smoked weed and would always search my car. 😂
Love the reaction videos!
Billy plays the harmonica and the piano, a great artist! Love your reaction!
I didn’t know he did all of that
So appreciate you reppin KC... I defentely remember smoking on airplanes from when I was a kid. My sister and I sat in the front of the plane while my parents were in the back, in the smoking section.
We Didn’t Start the Fire, Just the Way You Are, Only the Good Die Young and MANY more!
You are going on a journey of some of the greatest music from back in the day which I was lucky enough to live thru!
yes! i remember smoking on a plane! i was barely old enough, but YES! i smoked on a plane!
i recall my mom smoking in the waiting room of the doctor's office!!
life has changed A LOT! not all for the good, either!
so, as you can tell, I'm old enough to remember these classics! this is the music i grew up to! brings back memories of the good times!!
Billy has a song called "BILLY THE KID"
he refers to himself at the end and where he grew up on Long Island NY... he still lives about 5 miles away from that town! I know cuz i live about a mile away from him, we see him often on his motorcycle at the pizza place or tiki bar ❤ such a nice guy!!!!
So glad I found this channel. Love it!
You are so Cool Brother!! Such a Real Person!! Love your perspective on things!
Glad you are enjoying classic 70s music. You have a pretty voice!
It sounds like this was the inspiration for the music in the sitcom. "Cheers."
Billy Joel has so many good songs! The longest time, My life, & River of dreams are a few of my favorites by him! I 💯 remember when smoking was allowed everywhere!
'We Didn't Start the Fire'. It's history for real!
Yes, this is a classic. Great reaction.
Loved this reaction. Got yourself a new subscriber! By the way, I'm 62 and I remember when you could smoke in grocery stores and hospitals! I saw Billy Joel when he toured with Elton John. He was phenomenal!
It's dope watching you make these videos bro. As a vocalist, I can completely understand the benefit to being influenced by multiple genres of music. It's universal. Like math. It kinda hurts my soul to know that we, as humans, tend to hate each other for our differences, when deep down we all have so much more in common with each other. ❤🎤
Subscribed recently because I really enjoy your energy and your clear love of music.
I still smoke inside the bar. We also have a restaurant with a smoking section. Love Billy Joel
Billy Joel composed all his music. He trained as a trained as a classical pianist.
He was in contract talk and couldn't perform under Billy Joel. So, he played at a piano bar under Bill something. Then he wrote the whole song Pianoman about the experience.
The song is from 1974. And yes, the entire crowd sang this song at the show I was at. ANNNDDDD..yes, I remember being a smoker in the bar or restaurant, airport or airplane, even on a train commuting home. I am an ex-smoker now, but I was one of those dudes.
I smoked in Bars, Airplanes, Movie Theaters, and just about anywhere that's when we were FREE!!! Back in the 60's it was a great times in the bars and pitcher of beer was a $1.25 when I was in college!
Now in NY state can't even smoke in most places outdoors. 😢
I don’t know if you can get a piece of candy for $1.25 anymore
