I was lucky to grow up in the 70s .an amazing time for music . 66 and still rocken
Legend has it, when Ram Jam was getting ready to record 'Black Betty', their producer gave them a budget of just $500.
So they spent $450 on weed and beer, and then recorded it in the drummer's back yard. 🤘😎👍
LOL! Great comment! Made my day!
That would have bought several kegs and a couple pounds
That makes the song even more fun. hehe
Outstanding info🤙
A drummer having a nice house like that? 😂😂
It's funny watching reactors to this song, It almost always takes them by surprise so they end up rewinding the begining. It's aged really well.
This came out in 1977. I was in High School and used to blast this on my giant boom box at school and all the black girls would gather around and dance
I graduated in 77. those were the days. Would love to back to them days!
That would have been my guess. They still had the wide bottom jeans.
I wish my high school had been like that, lol
this is a cover of a military cadence from prior to civil war, where "Black Betty" was many things: in the first verse she is a musket that was very inaccurate due to lack of rifling, so the child (bullet) went wild (off target) and gone blind (the heavy smoke blocking vision after firing the weapon), 2nd verse is alcoholic drink of available for cheap to give to soldiers, and 3rd verse is an actual woman who "serviced" the soldiers at a local "men's club" in Alabama. "Bam a lam" is the reference sound of the musket firing and the beat of the singing cadence
This was a chain-gang song and 'Black Betty' was the prison whip, according to Wikipedia.
@@drServitis Don't take info on Wikipedia as fact. If you listen to the song, you can hear the correlation to what the OP was talking about. "Black Betty" as a whip doesn't make sense if you just look at it from a logical and poetic point of view. Black Betty had a child that went wild and blind. How can that be made to fit a whip? "She gets me high" - how would a chain gang whip get someone high? Quite the reverse really...
@@tattoodude8946 In those days whipping children was common, as was whipping inmates. The song talks about the chain-gang as if they're children and the parent is Black Betty the whip; the whip made the inmates go crazy, and even blinded some of them. That's what I read on Wikipedia at least. And it doesn't make sense to say "Black Betty's Life Mattered," so of course the song is talking about a whip and not a person.
@@drServitis Who said Black Betty's life mattered? What are you talking about? I mean I understand what Wikipedia said and your explanation, but where did you get that line?
I also believe if you read the whole page on Wikipedia you will find they make reference to it also being a bottle of whisky and/or a prison transfer vehicle. I have also read in other areas about the musket reference. But again, I would not rely solely of Wikipedia as a 100% ironclad reference point.
@@tattoodude8946 So are you saying it's a blatantly racist song conveying that Black Betty's life didn't matter?? I agree the song would be pejorative towards Black Betty if it were talking about a person, but I've found nothing that says it was written to be racist at all. All I've found is that the song is about a non-human thing, a whip, as I said earlier. I haven't found anyone who says it was written to denigrate a person.
My son and I went down a rabbit hole on the history and meaning of this when he was in high school several years ago. There is so much more here.
SO BLESSED to have been born in 1962 and grew up with the greatest era of music EVER!!! 1960's through the 80's...I have a music library I listen to all the time in my truck. No more radio for me...43,000+ songs in my library!!!
Damn. 27,000 for me, and I was under the impression that's a lot 😂
@@EskWIRED I wish I could add a picture on here so you would not think I was being untruthful.
Born in 63....64 to 80...just kick ass music
@@gerald833 AMEN!!!!
Black Betty was on every garage band's playlist back in the day.
If it wasn't for sampling and autotune, most modern music wouldn't exist.
Girl.. my husband.. now passed.. was 10 yrs older than me.. He grew up 70's.. I was 80's.. truly never heard this song till I met my husband.. he loved this song..
This Ram Jam version of this song came out in 1977. The exact definition of what Black Betty refers to, has been the subject of much debate. Bill Bartlett, the lead singer of Ram Jam, said he altered the songs lyrics from Leadbelly’s version of an old prison song. I wrote about Betty Page, Bartlett said, she’s a pin-up queen from the ‘50s, she was my inspiration for the last two verses. His response to what he thinks the song means? As long as you’re having a good time listening to it, I don’t care what you think it’s about.
It may refer to the whips used in the prison system by the gun bulls and as a form of corporal punishment, hence the "bam ba lam".
@@smithwesson7765
Maybe, but what most people don’t realize, if they bothered to take the time to research it, is that the song dates back to before the civil war; and there are dozens of different versions of this song with dozens of different meanings. So one persons meaning of the song, could be one of the dozens of meanings to the song. So EVERYBODY is right! And people will argue to the max that their version is the right one. The song has dozens of versions & meanings, whichever one you like, is the right version. Just leave it at that & move on.🎶
Nothing could ever beat 70’s music.
It did it's called 80s thrash metal
@@dennissurface8111 Your an IDIOT! Not even sorry! I like the attempt the 80's rock bands did to save rock, but it did Not happen. I really, really love a ton of "heavy metal" but it did not save rock music.
@@dennissurface8111 yeah and then the 90s lol
Truth. Music peaked in the 70s. At least rock, folk, R&B.
@@t0dd000 it was a long peak as it didn't start coming down until the mid 90's
This WAS the shortened version! The guitar riffs in the middle were cropped. But they could extend this song for 3 more minutes and it'd still be too short!
GREAT Reaction!
The instruments are PHENOMENALLY played in this song. I especially love the guitar playing.
Ditto!
Yes......on the album long version they show how well they can play
And at 2 and quarter minutes long, they still manage to squeeze in a drum solo!
I'm glad people in this thread appreciate the song for what it is. There's people in the comments that want to cry racism and all this garbage and crap instead of just appreciating that this is a bunch of good friends that are not racist who decided to write some of their Own lyrics to the song and make a video in their own backyard having a freaking blast. That's all it is and nothing more. So to all the comments crying racism and boohoo and boohoo, chill the hell out and shut the hell the fuk up and go to another platform where you can spout off your racist hate. If a black guy that showed up during this video they either would have asked him to join in or have a beer or have a hit off this freaking joint. That's it doesn't more you idiots. This is not a racist video. I have an idea. To anyone that thinks this is racist band making a racist statement somehow, can kiss my non-racist ass. Go to a platform where racism should be given its proper light, because this is not one that you can grandstand on as something racist. Again, if you do you can kiss my non-racist ass
I never payed that much attention to it, but recently saw Sina do a drum cover, and she was working hard. It's quite a workout.
"A chaotic masterpiece" is the perfect description.
Back in 60 s and 70 s we had black beauties, is that what they talking about?
Glad you liked it, Bam a Lam!!
LOVED IT!
@@brittreacts I was a wild child in Alabama when I first heard that song. Loved it then and still love it to this day. You can't help but jamming to it when you hear it.
My good sissy is 1977 I was 19 Years old And I was about as wild as they come Black Betty And it's ram jam wide open cadence Suited me perfectly until it didn't suit me anymore I almost destroyed my life I turned my life over to the lord Jesus And now I am a minister all these years later I've been preaching now for 41 years Ram jam black Betty Makes me laugh I appreciate I appreciate your reactions God bless you And your family ,, Rev Red rob Curry
Chaotic masterpiece in this case, is right. Ha. ✌ Layers of various meanings and uses.
"The Price is Right" microphone. That line alone got you my sub girl. Keep up your great reactions.
I love that line "This is the best chaos I've heard in my life". An excellent explanation of this song.
Everyone freaks out when they hear this. I enjoy watching people’s reactions. A great song.
Black Betty was a civil war Era rifle, it was know to discharge on its own,had a child damn things gone wild.
My kids always tell me how lucky I was to grow up in this era! We had great music and it was always a PARTY!
Bill bartlette the singer was in the lemon pipers and had a hit with green tambourine. Psychedelic/bubble gum..
From what I understand, the original versions were revolutionary war, possibly dating back to England where the rifle/musket was a dark wood/painted lacquer black customized version of the standard British Army issue Brown Bess musket
I grew up on this song. Started singing it at work the other day and was visited by HR later in the afternoon. I think I accidentally added my own verse.
this goes way way back to the late 30's. wow Ram Jam really Ramed Jammed it good
its a party . They were given 500 dollars to shoot the video . Spent 450 on gear and beer and filmed it in the backyard for 50.
Love your reactions. thankyou.
Listen to “Original Black Betty” recorded in 1933 at a Texas prison. Or Lead Belly. But the most haunting to me is James “Iron Head” Baker. The song goes even farther back. It’s considered a chain gang song. And in pre internet oral history was said to refer to the prison whip. The original writer is unknown.
I have it by Led belly thats all I know. Jim
Daaang...what a storied history.
@@D0nut42 right?
If this story is true, I see the entire chain gang writing the song. Now the question is, How to figure out the royalties. I gather the liars got that money. Ram Jam didn't get it. Nor did Lead Belly.
This song dates way back to the 18th century in Britain.
Just today, I saw where this song has 322 MILLION views, just off of 1 channel. That's pretty fricken awesome.
Mid 70s, the 70s was the best of times
Immortality in two minutes thirty five seconds.
Lead Belly - "Black Betty" song this between 1925 and 1933; It can be found in the Smithsonian Institute...
I will keep it in mind, thanks!
In the Smithsonian and on my Ipod (yeah, I still have one).
There's lots of legend behind "Black Betty" being an old, Revolutionary War, British musket that was less than reliable. The song is "ancient." Google will help.
The reason it's so short is that the original version has been edited down for AM radio back in the day. The longer version has an amazing musical break you should seek out. It's quite satisfying.
ua-cam.com/video/4cn_woPvjQI/v-deo.html
Actually the British musket was known as Brown Bess, Black Betty was the colonial musket.
I'm 62 yrs old. Listened to hs in llcollee 1973.
Yeah. A lot of greenery at that backyard party. That’s part of the reason they filmed it in a backyard.
As a little girl I remember my dad a Vietnam vet listen to this and Pink Floyd and I named my black charger black Betty
Britt ,you know what she is ready for girl,a damn good ram jamming🤣
This was done by "Lead Belly" around 80 years ago.
The lyrics "Black Betty had a child...weren't none of mine, the damned thing gone blind!" This was originally a chain gang work song, commercially sang by Leadbelly in the 1920's. For the child to go blind appears to be commenting on a Gonorrhea infection passed between the singer and Betty. Gonorrhea was known to cause blindness by infecting the Childs eyes as he passed through the birth canal. A subject of down-trodden chain gang prisoners to speak on.
This song “Black Betty” was originally made by “Leadbelly” in the 20’s or 40’s you can research it online. That is the guitarist home. In Upstate NewYork
Everything is a sample 😁😁
How does it feel to know its all been done before 😀😃😄😁😆😅🤣😂
Seriously most music, is derived from previous music.
But we love ❤️ 😍 💖 ❣️ the interpretations we hear and that speak to us!
😂😂😂😂❤❤ you Crack me up!! Loved your reaction and comments and questions😂😂
Everyone says "why is it so short!!" Everyone always wants more....funny
Ram Jam, 1 hit wonders.
77. that makes it almost 50 years old
Paying respect to there Blues hero Lead Belly
You just enjoy the music, and get up and dance. The 70's were really great.
Nothing like some loud, fun classic rock. Just enjoy!!
you say "How do I know that.. mind your own business"🤣🤣🤣
BTW this was a *GREAT REACTION*
These guys were a "supergroup" from bands of the 60s and 70s
I like the longer version.
This song is nearly 100 years old. It’s a shame that history doesn’t provide for the original artists to get their credit.
I thought the original roots of this song went back to the civil war.
Leadbelly! Enough said.
Oh dear! Pretty certain the person who wrote the original would be delighted their song continues to excite people. Just by playingg the song artists give "credit".
I don't think anyone can say, with 100% certainty, where this song originated, let alone the "original" artist.
This song is different than the original. Its meant to be fun not stir up all this dissension.Lighten up guys.Enjoy the music.
Betty was ready for anything really😊
best way ive ever heard this song described . chaos
LOL at the Price is Right mic. That guy there was in the Lemon Pipers who hat a hit with Green Tambourine in the 60s. Cool song too, psych pop and quite different. There's video.
Yeah, BB is a jam. By the way Britt, I really like your voice.
Ram jam singing black Betty was a cover from an old blues singer back in the 40’s named lead belly old black man.
This song actually to the best knowledge to date dates back into the 1700's...
Lol, it's too short. Yep..That was fun! 🤩
Black Betty was the old black powder rifle back in the day. The child was the pistol that accompanied it.
From Lead Belly in the early 1930s about a black whip used by guards at prison in TX.
This song was first recorded in 1933 and it has the feel of a work song to me - a chain gang chant perhaps? Imagine this a-capella by men.
Original song 1939 by Leadbelly, from the album Negro Sinful Songs. An old work song from early 1900s. 🇬🇧
A black Betty was a gun that was rock steady and always ready. in the Civil War. But this song is from the blues artist Lead belly in 1939 called black Betty. ✌️
You described it beautifully. "Chaotic Masterpiece" Best description of this song ever.
There's a longer version of this song. I've heard it a few times on the radio but most of the time it's this version.
Totally classic..when music was good
Yep black Betty is the gun, child gone wild is the bullet.
Fun Fact.. The singer in this song came from another little group from the 60's called The Lemon Pipers who had a one hit wonder called Green Tamborine.
Here is what i found.
"Black Betty" s a 20th-century African-American work song often credited to Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter as the author, though the earliest recordings are not by him. Some sources claim it is one of Lead Belly's many adaptations of earlier folk material."
I also found that Black Betty is a nickname for a bottle of whiskey.
The lyrics aren't meant to be taken literally, I believe.
This is a stone cold classic!
No one, but no one can beat the rendition of this song these guys fly
The original Black Betty was a song about a soldier's Flintlock musket about 200 years ago. His muskets name was Black Betty.
TRUST ME On This MUST HEAR Classic My Music Lovin' Sister,, It's Time To Get SERIOUSLY FUNKY Up In Here,, The Average White Band "Cut The Cake" (Live On Soul Train Video A MUST!!)
Every one was drunk back them. Every day was laundry day.
This is one of the first rock songs I can remember hearing on the radio
ram jam great the were studio art
There's a long version out there. Heard this about 25 times. Only heard the long version twice. It's really good . Never gets old. Heard this when it first came out. Had a lot more fun in those days then you do today. A lot more freedom.
I did grow up in that era.....and your spot on !!
Filmed in their backyard in Long Island NY!
I would like to be the guy in the Background just clapping his hands and getting royalties for the song
The song "Black Betty" has a very long history, going back to the 1800s
This, is the radio edit. There's more to it !
Saludos desde Costa Rica , pura vida !!!
1rst verse , is a revolutionary war long gun, mussel loader (Ram Jam) that lead ball down into the gun powder.
2nd verse, a fast black muscle car.
3rd a beautiful black dancer he can't get enough of. 😍👍
Hit the billboard in 1977. It was #18. This was a one hit wonder.😊 You had me dancing 💃
oL JOHN DOWN THERE NAILED IT!
😂 The Price Is Right Microphone 👏👏 YES!
Solid '70's, no '80's.
Its the most 2 minute fun in rock history!!! LOL
The best guitar instrumental ever
Britt, you missed your calling....you should have been a detective. You summarized the singer and the microphone, etc in 5 seconds! "Price is Right" microphone comment had me laughing out loud. Love the channel!
James "iron head " Baker age 63 1933 recorded this song he was black ma in prison then lead belly later did his version
This is one of those Jams that Rams right into my ears and mind...then straight to my soul. Leaving me days and confused. I don't know what just happened..but I know i like it. Aaalot 😂
This is an origional from Leadbelly . So is : Midnight Special - Green Corn . And other classic rock songs
I think she’s always ready to hang out in the yard and party! lol. Black Betty is an old gun, it’s a in accurate gun ,wild when it shoots goes bam a lam, this was really a 1930’s song made into a rock song in 1970.
This is a remake of a song released by Leadbelly in 1939 (from probably an earlier song).
You are too cute for words. This happens to be a song on a playlist I created for an aviation action movie I'm developing about a female repo pilot. Thanks for reacting to it.
This is a guilty pleasure.
Ok @BrittReacts…I love love love listening to you
