You could say Dave and James and Lars invented thrash. Metallica's debut was the first thrash album and Dave wrote a lot of the riffs on it. Also Metallica's first 4 albums were mostly thrash, but starting with the 5th, the black album, and through the 90s they moved away from thrash. Their latest two albums started incorporating more thrash elements.

Alright, the history of Megadeth and Metallica regarding Dave Mustaine. Dave was the OG guitarist for Metallica. But was kicked out before he got to record an album with Metallica. He was replaced by Kirk Hammett, who played for Exodus, again, before Exodus recorded with him. All this took place circa 1982. Metallica released their first album in 1983. All four bands are still active and recording albums, except Exodus hasn't put anything out since 2014, but are due for a new one this year it seems.
