I played the violin as a kid and did not play for 40 years. My daughter plays now and she has a beautiful vibrato; she plays better than I ever did and has inspired me to learn again. Vibrato always seemed quite a mystery until this video. I think I can follow these steps and get there, even at my age! Thanks!

I'm kind of embarrassed to admit I never really learned vibrato in school, but now that I'm picking the violin back up, im determined to learn. This was the most approachable and understandable video I've watched. It's going to be part of my practice plan (that I also learned from you!) from now on. Tysm!😊

  • @cellospot

I played violin as a kid, and then switched to the cello, and went on to play the cello semi-professionally. Fast forward nearly a decade after putting music behind me. The music director of my church asked me to play the violin for the Christmas pageant. I haven't played the violin in a really long time! A friend loaned me their violin to practice on, and it's pretty rough, but I was delighted to find that my violin vibrato has been somewhat influenced by my cello vibrato skill. It's not perfectly beautiful because it is a different movement, but at least I have a vibrato. I have two months to work on this, so I hope to make my violin playing decent by the time the pageant comes along.
    Thank you for the video!

Great lesson. I'm a returner - did grade VIII age 18, didn't find an outlet for violin compatible with medical school curriculum at university, and hardly played until I turned 63. I have a great teacher, taking me right back to basics. But she teaches arm vibrato, which doesn't come as easily to me as the wrist vibrato you teach. But, hey! I'll do my best to learn it, then I'll have both methods in my toolkit.

This is an incredible story! I’m so so glad you’re picking it back up and loving it!
I’m genuinely curious; is there a reason your teacher is specifically doing arm vibrato or is she cool with wrist vibrato as well? I’m always curious when teachers are very specific about something the reasoning behind it.

I live in a condo too and don’t practice with a mute. A mute really alters the sound of the violin and masks any issues actually going on. If you feel you really need one occasionally, a practice mute works great.

I am a clawhammer banjo player (dulcimer also) and have loved a fiddle for a long time. I turned 50 a couple weeks ago and got myself a fiddle 😁. Anyhow, Im finding this easier to start, than I remember banjo being.
I tried vibrato before watching this video and did a finger lift (slightly) and press method and its working pretty well, considering I've only been playing for a couple weeks. I've incorporated it into simple songs like "Angeline the Baker" and it really adds a lot to the songs. I'm pretty much playing core melody, but with vibrato added, I really enjoy the sound.

It's taken me two years of off and on study to get anything resembling vibrato. I'm not at all ashamed. That's just how long it's taken me. Sometimes 5min a day. Sometimes 15min. So.etimes I don't practice at all. I'm stoked! I can do vibrato! Thank you so much Corrie! Your a great teacher! Bye!😅

Thank you, this was such a great step by step on how to start with vibrato! I had been finding it so tricky just getting the wrist movement, but this has helped so much and I appreciate how you broke it down! :) I will definitely be practicing this a bunch!!
I have a question - eventually when we get familiar with the movement and increase speed, how should we go about practicing with our wrist not against the violin? I tried this briefly and found it was more difficult and feels different from when the wrist is against the violin

    • @Corrietheviolinist

These are all good pointers ( though it is quite possible to do vibrato without using a shoulder rest because it is a matter of balancing on the collarbone and allowing the hand to support the violin at the other end- many many great players have beautiful vibratos without using a shoulder rest, although some have a small pad or sponge to help with stability of the violin) but at 12:52 you get into the hardest part for most students- the ability to let go of the support of the wrist against the rib and not let the wrist cave in like a pancake. That is actually the trickiest thing to establish and doing the previous steps does not guarantee when the student lets go of the rib that they can control that. Would you consider doing another video that addresses that issue at greater length? What I have found essential is that students must understand how they are moving and realize the movement does not involve pushing the wrist up from underneath. They can only see this in a mirror watching themselves to train their hand to only go back and forward so the wrist does not independently push up flat underneath the neck. This requires careful observation and gentle control of the muscles. That is where students need to be patient (the teacher too!) as they understand how their brain gets their body to move appropriately.

Dear @ Cindy Wells, you and I may have something in common, i gave up after 6th grade because a. I couldnt tune well and b.couldnt read music. I also had a 40 year gap approx from 1972 or so to about 1980. Thats when i dragged out my great grandfathers violin and rehaired its only bow with black mares tail. I counted out 288 strands and used masking tape to create a hank to plug into the mortice. Anyway dont give up like I did; my teacher demoralized me to my mother saying he doesnt have fast twitch he, ll never amount to any thing on the violin. I have been practicing vibrato since 2 years ago in the summer. Nicola Benedetti is correct when she says your journey will have ups and downs relish the pain. So dont give up. Loosen those shoulders up, clasp hands behind your back and bring over head, that will loosen your neck arms and fingers. Be gentle andgo easy. That may help.thats 40 years i could have been practicing. You and i both! Just do 5 min a day and work up to 15 min every day and dont over do it. If you hurt yourself youl be apt to guve up. Make sure your bridge feet dont have any gaps at contact area. 328mm is the fundamental string length nut edge to bridge front edge. Good luck!😅

Admittedly, after playing the violin for 10 years, I still can’t do a true wrist or arm vibrato. The best I can do is a so-called finger vibrato. Whenever I attempt a wrist and/or arm vibrato my bow arm shakes like a 7.0 earthquake. When it comes using vibrato, I’ll reserve it for my brass and woodwind instruments.

I recommend using a shoulder rest, especially if you don’t have a private teacher to help with technique and posture. But if you think you’ve got the technique down without one then try doing vibrato!

It’s okay! Vibrato takes a little while to learn. Don’t get discouraged!
