I'm 70 years old and as part of my bucket list .. my wish to play violin, I have finally decided it's now or never and have just started my first lessons. Your video is wonderful … I hope to get to this stage by Christmas. You are a wonderful teacher.
Try this trick: Wrap a cloth around the scroll and stand up against the wall, the scroll pushing against the wall. It will provide extra support so that your hand can stay more relaxed.
I'm a classical guitarist but I do have a violin for reasons. The muscle memory is a challenge, I tend to do a classical guitar vibrato everytime lol. The only way I can get a decent vibrato with a violin is if I play it like a cello. 😅
It just takes time, that's all. The motion has to develop slowly. Don't worry. Keep practicing it and it will happen Trying to speed it up by sheer will isn't a good idea. That will put tension in the arm. When the muscles are ready, they will naturally start to speed up and stay even. Most people are never patient enough. I've had students who have been working over a year, and still don't have their fully developed vibrato yet.
As an adult learner I have been playing the violin for only about a year and a half. Late last year we started on vibrato and now, after months and months, I have gotten to where I can do some very slow and very basic vibrats on just a couple fingers in first position. Not fast enough for a song really, but its progress. I have heard it takes a year or more to learn this skill and I am sure that is true for me. Maybe years would be more accurate, but I wont give up until I learn it, unless I die first.
as a multi-instrumentalist with 30 years of experience, i don't think i've ever seen a better tutorial. this has it all: multiple angles, slo-mo, dos and don'ts. i plan on watching this 1000 times until violin vibrato is MY DOMAIN! ;) thanks for the good work
Excellent! I do love how you explained. I learned to play Violin at the age 45. My Husband, a Professional Violinist, as per my request, began to teach me. He an excellent Teacher, and according to him, I was a good student. I played for twenty years, but due to a disease that cause my hands to shake, I stopped, and now after seven years w/o playing, I have decided to play again. So I began a month ago. I am a very determined person, even though I have pretty bad shoulders & neck arthritis. I will continue to do it. I am 73 y/o now. I have been playing at Church. So I am studying my books/ music. By the way, my hands are no longer shaking as bad a they were. Violin is My Second Love. It's the Most Beautiful Musical Instrument. I will be in touch! Thank you. 😊 I will definitely look at your videos.
zakarria, Don't worry, the best vibrato is one the listener does not notice. Noticing vibrato is distracting to the sound of the stringed instrument and ruins the phrasing.
I love the slow motion in the video - amazing to see such fluid, consistent oscillations :D Great exercises for developing freedom and exploring more colours of vibrato include peg knock, acceleration exercises, thumb stretches and many more. In fact, I just recently made a video on the topic of vibrato, where I discuss things from exercises, phrasing with vibrato, and different styles of vibrato. Would be great if you could check it out. Literally, the most incredible thing just happened. I have been frustrated for the past week trying to play Meditation from Thais, mainly trying to play the soft parts at the bottom of the bow while keeping my vibrato from shaking the violin and I watched this video, then I started playing the piece again. In about two minutes, i started to let my fingers relax, let my entire hand relax, and all of a sudden I realized that I was playing more beautifully that piece than I have ever played it.
I was watching another video about learning vibrato and someone commented, "I finally learned how to vibrato after I stopped trying to vibrate my fingers and started to vibrate my violin". Boy oh boy did that simple comment help me so much. I play the viola as an adult beginner and I felt I could never get vibrato no matter how many videos I watched! I just thought about that comment some more and told myself "just do it" and I DID! I am so ecstatic! Didn't think I was capable of it. I can't wait to keep practicing the movement until I feel it flows right when I'm playing a piece.
What I particularly liked about your video is you went into detail for the mechanics of the individual fingers and in addition, the thumb. It helped a lot!!
This is the BEST explanation and demonstration of vibrato i have ever seen. So informative, the do's and donts are really helpful and slow motion clips are really easy to follow and understand. Thanks for taking the time to share your vibrato secrets. You've answered all my questions, I've deleted all my other 'how to do vibrato' clips on youtube, as I realize now, that not every one who can play violin vibrato, can teach it and you certainly can so thank you :-)

Really good - sending several of these videos to my students who try to SKYPE lessons and I don't LIKE doing this. Retired and love your video the most. Very clear points. Very well done. I just do what I can for them now that I have moved and they can't get to a good teacher.
I have watched many videos on youtube teaching how to do vibrato, this is so far the best of all. It doesn't just tell you, it shows you clearly in slowmo and that is priceless
I'm so amazed by the video about the violin from 12 years ago! It's a truly high-quality and fantastic instructional video on the violin. From how you teach and explain about Violin Vibrato, camera, sound, and voice... everything is precise, visual, and easy to understand
This is definitely the best vibrato video on youtube. I would have liked to see you play the whole first movement of the violin concerto in a separate video. One can learn so much by just watching and listening to the solo violin without the distraction of the full orchestra.
At 0:48 I like and appreciate the fact that the opening violin demo part starts on the open G string, and yet, the vibrato sound on this open string note is nearly the same as the fingered notes. Bravo!
Violin beginners: have in mind that the vibrato is kind of "pro" techinque. You won't fully control it with just few years of practice, hell I consider myself to be a beginner too. However, if you do start to practise it, it will take several months before you can do a decent vibrato sound. There are other things you should train before the vibrato. I noticed in the slo-mo how loose and relaxed the other fingers of your left hand are as you do the vibrato. Tried relaxing my other fingers and wow, an immediate improvement! Thank you so much for this video!
Shorouq Kadair It may be because you try vibrato too early and you haven't got well accustomed to the bow yet. Learn all the 1st position notes first and make sure you can play without much attention to the bow then try vibrato. If that's not the case, keep practicing then, the first step is never easy. I had that problem at first too but now it only happens so rarely.
Guys can someone tell me how to learn ALL notes,i know the 1.position notes in 4 strings but i dont know the higher notes than first position, how can i learn?
I had thesame problem but I overcame it by starting the vibrato with a metronome at 60 for two movements of the finger. When the bow does not stop anymore set the metronome two steps higher (66) and try again. Work like that with each finger till you reach the good speed and BE PATIENT please :o)
you are the most helpful person ive ever "met" by that i mean seen i have been practicing ever since i restarted playing and thanks to my orchestra teacher's help on relearning and your video lessons ive improved alot in the last 3 months thank you soooo much! and i think you deserve this...GOD BLESS YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think it is worth every effort to get the most comfortable and secure set up you can. I still keep trying different chin rests, hoping to someday find the PERFECT one.
I'm struggling so much to even move my hand/finger joint the way you show us without the violin. After having watched your video with 8 beginner tips I pay much more attention to how stiff parts of my body get. I have an shoulder impingement that got really awful these days practising. I hope to find a set up that might help me master the vibrato. I hardly can do it with 2nd and 3rd finger and always cling to the violin.
Exactly, my point was that there really is no such thing as a continuous vibrato, which you can see in the slo mo shot. Yet, we have to aspire to that notion so that it can "sound" continuous.
Oh man this is a breakthrough for me! I had been locking my hand against the treble side of the neck and could never get a proper wide vibrato! Thank you!
@@queenWillowwww3893 This might help - hold a plastic easter egg (or pretend you are holding one) in the palm of your hand, and just do the wrist motion. When you feel comfortable, do the vibrato on your violin. Or you can hold your violin like a cello, just to get the motion down.
Really informative video! In just a few days I've gone from "I'll never get this," an initial, complete failure to - having watched your vid and another UA-cam instructor's vid both helping me "free" my hand - so today I'm like "hey, I'm doing vibrato!" Now for more work . . . freeing up the hand raises it's own, separate challenges
Your vibrato chokes me up when I hear you play Meditation. I will keep practicing. I have played one year now and am just starting to get some vibrato with the 2nd and third finger. I have saved this video for future teference. Thanks Beth.
In your daily exercises, try to move each finger up and down in your violin moving your falanges without actually playing any sound. Try to exercise your falanges individually, because they will hurt a bit initially. The vibrato in the violin uses muscles you don't use in your daily basis, you have to work them from scratch. Train your reflexes and your wrist position because the hardest part is to actually vibrate anything while you're playing with the bow. Have patience and you'll get there :)
I used to use the Wolf as well. I loved it. I switched to the Bon Musica because my neck was starting to give me problems. The BM has that "hook" which alleviated some of my neck tension.
ehem, I clearly cannot do vibrato because every time i start wiggling my finger, my whole damn body move along with it. Do NOT get me started when im bowing
Hey sorry, I realised that was sorta stupid. But yeah learn to pull your arm or wrist back and forth while your finger stays on the same point. There's rotation involved that's too much to describe really. Practice o your arm
@@TriyanshaB ua-cam.com/video/Q3lhoutwB14/v-deo.html Also, to start with. Have your hand high on the fingerboard so as to place your thumb near/on the body of the violin. Move your wrist so that you slide your fingers up and down the strings with a slight pressure, keep your fingers in contact with the save strings the whole way. You can do this with one or multiple fingers. For me it helped me get a feel for the motion I want my wrist to make.
Hey guys! Here are a few vibrato tips I learned! Relax your knuckle! This helped so much! Take videos of yourself so you know how you look like! Shake out your wrist! Rosin your bow! I’m going to add more tips as time goes on, but be sure to reply some other tips!
I think it would be more efficient to break down exactly what each part of the hand is doing. Make it almost abstract. like This is how you move the finger. Then this is what the palm does. Then this is the wrist does. But I'm lost

Thank you so much!! I got a violin two days ago as a 20th birthday gift. I’ve always wanted to play this instrument but I just never got the chance to do it. The violin shop owner warned me though saying it is harder than you think lol It is amazing that immediately after watching this video vibrato is totally possible!
help guys, I cannot do first finger vibrato very easily, if at all. It is nothing even remotely close to how Blackerby does it. It feels tense and well frankly, isn't bendy or free at all, it's like even if I try to do a motion it gets stopped by some external force I'm not aware of, and it's kind of frustrating.
***** I watched a bit of fiddlerman's videos on vibrato too, I guess I'm putting the cart before the horse and not getting the foundations yet, a big reason why I couldn't do first finger vibrato is because the side of my index finger is actually squeezing the neck. I noticed in this video that the side of her index finger isn't even touching the neck at all! However, I also wanted to ask if vibrato is more of a pull back and release motion? For example, making the finger flat first(pulling it back) and then make it go forward?
Thank you so much for this video on Vibrato....it is THE best one I've seen on the subject and I've watched sooo many. I'm having trouble learning but everyone says it takes months and I'm determined to learn it ! Thanks again.
I have a problem with first finger. When I practice vibrato on first finger I find it very difficult cause it seems like there's no space for movement. And I feel like my violin and thumb are sliding. Any advice?
Sometimes that happens due to tension at the neck. It can land at the wrist which then unfortunately tightens the hand range of motion possible. I was taught to practice with a shaker egg. Then I emulated that relaxed motion with the violin and set up my shoulder rest to meet my neck relaxation, instead of meeting my shoulder rest demand :)
Wow, this hole time I had my thumb tightened. All it had to do was loosen my thumb and let the skin move while touching the violin. Thanks for finding my problem :D
Awesome Video! I stopped playing the viola for a few years, and when I got back into playing, I had issues with my vibrato. It was specifically, tightness and a little bit of instrument shaking with the vibrato motion. I had asked around, and the common answer was that I was applying too much pressure with my fingers. But not a single person mentioned the thumb! Thanks for the amount of information in this tutorial!

If you're doing it horizontally, that may cause your intonation to he off, due to sliding around on the fingerboard. When you do vibrato, your vibrato has to be a tiny bit under the actual note you're playing, which rocking back and fourth, which would still be hitting the intended note. Hopefully that helps a part of your question.
I used to move my wrist when playing the vibrato but I've realised that if I focus more on the fingers that essentially do the vibrato, the motion in my wrist falters and the vibrancy of the vibrato is more sweet, wide and resonate. Thank you so much.
THANK YOU. I've been watching so many vibrato videos and only yours let me figure out what I was doing wrong - your very first don't. I need to change some of the mechanics of my left hand as a result, but I think I can finally do it.
yes it’s one of the most difficult instruments. you have to take many techniques into account. you will sound out of tune for a long time and controlling different techniques will take time. that's why many students give the violin up there are not many violinist. you can play a song after 3 months with a flute, piano and guitar but not with a violin. and vibrato is not something you can learn in the beginning. the beginners disease is tension and you can never manage a vibrato if you have tension but tension vanishes with practice. I don't have the tension anymore that I’ve had in the beginning and I think I can soon start to learn the vibrato. if i will manage, not everyone succeeds. that’s what my private teacher said.
Mustafa arıkan You can maybe go to a music academy and listen to musicians that play the violin for 1 year or 3 years if they don’t mind. The first thing my private teacher said is: with a violin you can’t play a song in 3 months. You can do that with other instruments but not with a violin. It’s better if you hire a violin in the beginning.
Hey! I'm here to say thanks to you since your lessons helped me a lot when I was totally hopeless. After watching your tutorials I started progressing! It has just been 2 weeks and I'm able to do vibrato to an extent! Thankssss a lot!! :)
Omg...I am from blood line where was Václav Pichl, he was teacher of Paganini. I am playing violin two months now. But this is.... I am speechless and I don't know how I will do it.😅🙏❤ It's perfect video and you are very talented person. Thank you so much!🌸
people keep talking about flexibility, while it's really just motor control; learning the pattern will allow for effortless vibrato, it's not like your fingers lack the mobility to move like that.
***** the problem isn't thinking, but the fact that your brain hasn't adapted to the movement pattern yet, so your body can't execute the technique effortlessly yet. that's why it takes time to develop a technique that feels smooth and easy to place on any given note.
It's only shaking by millimeters really lol. My problem was my thumb needed to be relaxed and touching the violin at the same time. But supposedly, it's not really supposed to shake
That's the misconception. The violin really shouldn't rest "in the hand". It should be solidly supported by the shoulder and weight of the head. The thumb creates a minimal but necessary counter pressure by a counter-intuitive tug from the skin in an upward direction from the neck. It sounds confusing, but I have many detailed videos on the subject (Left Hand Squeezing) on my website ViolinLab(dot)com.
at around 2:40 or so. Does it help to have a shoulder rest because currently I don't have one and when I try to vibrato without holding the neck like you said was improper, I'm relying on my thumb for the support but it's not enough support. (Hope you understood what I was asking here)
Superb video with details of freedom of finger movement explained simply! I understand by visually watching your fingers with correct vibrato! I have watched others that were not correct! Thank you Beth!

I love your teaching and plan to sign up
Probably the best video explaining the vibrato I've seen so far ... Thank you !
Thank you!
First attempt to vibrato = shake the violin
I still can’t get it down ;^;
Second attempt = shake my head
You'll get it, keep trying and maintain a relaxed state!
@@madchemist01 thank you! :') I'll keep practicing
My awakening was seeing pros hold the entire instrument under their chin.
Guitar players have EXTREME issues moving to violin.
heh
Your vibrato chokes me up when I hear you play Meditation. I will keep practicing. I have played one year now and am just starting to get some vibrato with the 2nd and third finger. I have saved this video for future teference. Thanks Beth.
Amazingly detailed, specific, precise and helpful explanation. Thank you!
U Rock! I'm a beginning Violinist, and that First Vibrato in the Video was a Face Melter! Gives me something to work towards. Thx
This is by far THEEE BEST video I've seen so far.
Great... I did every don't 😥😂
Kari :3 Dude me too. My motion was really restricted.
so me 😂😂
What else did you see from my mind?!
This comment was 4 years ago... R u still practising?
🤓🤓
I’ve been trying to learn properly the vibrato since I was 9 years old. Now I’m 22 and thanks to you I’m finally getting there
I used to use the Wolf as well. I loved it. I switched to the Bon Musica because my neck was starting to give me problems. The BM has that "hook" which alleviated some of my neck tension.
one of the best demo /documentary for violin vibrato on UA-cam,
ehem, I clearly cannot do vibrato because every time i start wiggling my finger, my whole damn body move along with it. Do NOT get me started when im bowing
DUDE IM THE SAME NOW HOW ARE YOU DOING AFTER 7 MONTHS
Need some help?
@@TriyanshaB yea
Hey sorry, I realised that was sorta stupid. But yeah learn to pull your arm or wrist back and forth while your finger stays on the same point. There's rotation involved that's too much to describe really. Practice o your arm

Also, to start with.
Very helpful- seeing the "don'ts" against the "dos" helps me identify what I'm doing wrong and how to correct it.
This lesson is so thorough. Thanks! I'll have to consider taking lessons from your Web site. This is wonderful! :)
Best vibrato violin video on UA-cam
Hey guys! Here are a few vibrato tips I learned!
Relax your knuckle! This helped so much!
Take videos of yourself so you know how you look like!
Shake out your wrist!
Rosin your bow!
I’m going to add more tips as time goes on, but be sure to reply some other tips!
The best and the simplest Lesson ever...on vibrato for a beginner, thanks so much
8:16 We don't do that here.
🤣🤣🤣
Great video! Explains so much of what no one teaches you about vibrato!
I think it would be more efficient to break down exactly what each part of the hand is doing. Make it almost abstract. like This is how you move the finger. Then this is what the palm does. Then this is the wrist does. But I'm lost
So my second finger joint is moving. What about he first joint? merp

The following video has an excellent demonstration of how to practice the vibrato with a very slow motion plus a detailed description. Please fast forward the video to 11: 40 mins. This is the place where she started showing the vibrato in slow motion. After you got a fair understanding of what she meant, then watch from the very beginning.

Good Luck
My vibrato technic will be improved thanks to your tutorials. Really helpful.
Very great video! and beautiful violin!!! o.o thank you!
i watch professor v on youtube and i watch his vibrato lessons however, this is the best youtube that ive seen because it points out both dos and donts something that is very important to learn
Am trying to learn vibrato ... and it's so difficult to learn! Just going to keep at it! Thanks for the video.
Ok
AMAZING. This corrected my wrist vibrato and actually got me to do a correct vibrato!!!!!
BUENAS TARDES, GRACIAS POR MOSTRARNOS COMO HACER EL VIBRATO, CON UNA TECNICA EXCELENTE, Y TAMBIEN PONER LOS SUBTITULOS. NUNCA HABIA COMPRENDIDO COMO ESTUDIARLO. GRACIAS PROFESORA. BENDICIONES.
Best tutorial ever. Thank you for your thoroughness!
8:20 talk about being the hardess finger... A simple fourth finger is hard enough 😂
*****
I watched a bit of fiddlerman's videos on vibrato too, I guess I'm putting the cart before the horse and not getting the foundations yet, a big reason why I couldn't do first finger vibrato is because the side of my index finger is actually squeezing the neck. I noticed in this video that the side of her index finger isn't even touching the neck at all!
However, I also wanted to ask if vibrato is more of a pull back and release motion? For example, making the finger flat first(pulling it back) and then make it go forward?
Ganshei As a guitarist, I'm unable to actually do this, but the principal rule of vibrato is to start at the correct note, and then bend down, not up.
Any advice?
try having a tighter grip with your chin
Maybe try raising your knuckle a bit higher? I tried that after watching another video and it has helped me get more movement on my first finger.
@@ayesha7357 and then what do you do when you need to bow?
Sometimes that happens due to tension at the neck. It can land at the wrist which then unfortunately tightens the hand range of motion possible. I was taught to practice with a shaker egg. Then I emulated that relaxed motion with the violin and set up my shoulder rest to meet my neck relaxation, instead of meeting my shoulder rest demand :)
Really helpful definitely some of the mistakes I've been making !

Obrigado por ter colocado legenda em português BR❤
THANK YOU. I've been watching so many vibrato videos and only yours let me figure out what I was doing wrong - your very first don't. I need to change some of the mechanics of my left hand as a result, but I think I can finally do it.
is it hard to play the violin , the sound of it its so heavenly, i wanna learn :(
yes it’s one of the most difficult instruments. you have to take many techniques into account. you will sound out of tune for a long time and controlling different techniques will take time. that's why many students give the violin up there are not many violinist. you can play a song after 3 months with a flute, piano and guitar but not with a violin. and vibrato is not something you can learn in the beginning. the beginners disease is tension and you can never manage a vibrato if you have tension but tension vanishes with practice. I don't have the tension anymore that I’ve had in the beginning and I think I can soon start to learn the vibrato. if i will manage, not everyone succeeds. that’s what my private teacher said.
Thanks :)
***** hi i start to violin on february too , I wonder how much you can play now . I want to compare. do you have any records ?
I havent started lol i will soon
Mustafa arıkan You can maybe go to a music academy and listen to musicians that play the violin for 1 year or 3 years if they don’t mind. The first thing my private teacher said is: with a violin you can’t play a song in 3 months. You can do that with other instruments but not with a violin. It’s better if you hire a violin in the beginning.
The best tutor video for vibrato ever , thx for sharing.
What was the song she played in the beginning?
+David Duarte prelude
It's the beginning of Bruch Violin Concierto No. 1 in G Minor op. 26
Darude - Sandstorm

Hey! I'm here to say thanks to you since your lessons helped me a lot when I was totally hopeless. After watching your tutorials I started progressing! It has just been 2 weeks and I'm able to do vibrato to an extent! Thankssss a lot!! :)
Beautiful excelente. ♥️🎶🎵🎻😍🇧🇷👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
+Not Legato Stop to thinking, that's plenty kind of the problem. I just realise this right now.
***** the problem isn't thinking, but the fact that your brain hasn't adapted to the movement pattern yet, so your body can't execute the technique effortlessly yet.
that's why it takes time to develop a technique that feels smooth and easy to place on any given note.
For some of us, we do indeed have a lack of mobility, I can assure you.
You are fantastic!!! Thank you so much!!! A big hug from Brazil.
is the violin supposed to shake too? or am i just doing it wrong?
okay thank youuu
It's only shaking by millimeters really lol. My problem was my thumb needed to be relaxed and touching the violin at the same time. But supposedly, it's not really supposed to shake
Watching your video is helping develop a better vibrato. Thank you for sharing this valuable lesson.
Great information! But if i dont hug the violin while doing vibrato it dont work.. Am i doing it wrong or do i just need more practice?
Try starting in third position with your entire thumb against the rib (curve) of your instrument. That gets rid of the need to hug the instrument
I thank you very much for this. I humbly praise your teaching skills, talent and beauty.
Wow! I'm going to be learning vibrato in two days. This will help me. My violin teacher sent me this video. I'm glad she did.
at around 2:40 or so. Does it help to have a shoulder rest because currently I don't have one and when I try to vibrato without holding the neck like you said was improper, I'm relying on my thumb for the support but it's not enough support. (Hope you understood what I was asking here)
It elps a ton to have a shoulder rest
***** Shoulder rests hurt my chest..
I like having violins without anything on them. It's pretty comfy
Thanks
when you dont have a shoulder rest it is like eating without a fork because it will sound very out of tune and it will be very hard to play.
I watch this video all the time... it really is a great refresher!
That moment you realize you been doing it wrong
I was doing it like it was a guitar moving the finger up and down instead of left and right
Yep, me too.
You’re amazing, played from age 4-12, I’m in early 40s thanks for everything. You’re talented 👊🇨🇦❤️
Far to advanced for myself.
+Colin Hesketh You'll get it after a while! Keep up the practice and you will accomplish all of your goals!
+Aberdeen Rodriguez Thanks for the encouragement.
Superb video with details of freedom of finger movement explained simply! I understand by visually watching your fingers with correct vibrato! I have watched others that were not correct! Thank you Beth!
