- The truth about owning a 392 engine I wish I knew.
The 392 is a great engine producing 485hp / 475 tq, unfortunately due to the weak pistons in it building it up can often be seen as not worth the investment since Hellcat prices have dropped. In this video I explain my perspective on why its smarter to avoid modding the 392 and voiding warranty and instead upgrading to the hellcat which has the better drivetrain components to handle the additional power.

almost clicked away when you tried checking the oil while running lol

Same lol
Yup. Lol
You pull the oil release bolt out of the bottom of the oil pan when it is running. The running engine will hold the oil inside and you just shine a flashlight inside to check it. Simple. 😉😂
Sak 20012019 I tried this but the engine is ticking now. I put water in the engine to flush it out.
Waste of 12 minutes of my life....... this guy is so uninformed.
It's amazing that some of the guys that have a blog don't know shit about cars! Damn
IKR apparently having 5 hp less and 50 less pound feet of torque makes mustangs a weaker platform 😂

25 less hp but anyway I have a gt base with the performance pack so its alot lighter than the challenger they pull on me on the big end in a roll race lol
Came to post this 7 months later.

Bro get an OIL CATCH CAN and that will stop the oil burnoff that you saw when doing a cold start....
Good to know. I've been seeing some of that once in a while if I park on an incline. I had the dealer check it out; they did a software update but it has still been smoking once in a while on startup. Will install that catch can that I got for Christmas ;)
@@jononstott did it work?
Looks like your a good candidate for a Prius
Suprachahhhged
I wish more people owned a Prius, it would lower Premium prices
Most Challenger owners also own a Prius. I used to clown the Prius, until I saw that $20 of gas gets 300+ miles easy. Ordinary cars beg for 100 miles on $20 of gas. There are at least 5 Priuses on my street alone. Several more on the next block. Not sure why all this hate towards it still exists.
Liberty or Death well if you drive a Challenger, you are driving an import.
Van Shan It’s the people that drive the car not necessarily the car
Hahahahahaha when you said “Third time filling up this week” that had me dying because i could relate !!! I have a Scat Pack Charger 2019 recently leased it. I love it man, couldnt be happier. I also love it when people ask “How many miles to the gallon you get” i always reply with “Smiles per Gallon NOT Miles per Gallon”. I dont take credit for coming up with that line, but truer words couldnt be said.

Its a sad day when two muscle cars pull next to eachother and talk about video games 😒🔫
Naw fr wtf i wanted to kill myself
He asked the guy "what do you got done to this thing" and dude started talking about video games lol
Justin McGinty He would probably call aaa if he got a flat tire in the driveway.
The mustang isnt a muscle car

The smoke generated at startup was more than likely caused by you racing the engine at shut down. The oil pressure pushes the oil up into the heads and drains down onto the cylinders. When you turned it off, this leaves the valves open for oil to drain down onto the cylinders. Hope this explains your scare.
That makes no sense. The only way for the oil to drain through the valves into the cylinder is through bad valve seals or through the intake manifold. The heads drain oil back into the block.
Intake pvc problem
Most likely from not having an oil catch can. The oil build up in the intake manifold can do that. If you get an oil catch can and the problem still persists after a month or so, then you have a bigger problem. Bad valve guides/seals.
In a 14,000 mile car would be a shame
Found this on the challenger forum replied by an SRT Engineer. A decent explanation. I've had this once or twice on my 2016 Scat 392 not a daily driver. I've done 3 cold starts a month apart since I stored it for the winter with no issues.
Here it is: New engines take some time for the piston rings (sometimes seals as well) to break in. As ring tensions have reduced and bore finishes have improved (read smoother) the rings will take longer to seal to the mating surface. In some rare cases, if an engine is run very hard right out of the chute you will get some glazing between the bores and rings which will cause an even longer (or potentially never) break in period. Normal conditions will break in and seal up well within several thousand miles. Make a few hard runs with the car after break in will ususally accelerate the sealing. Some light smoke from the exhaust on start ups (usually cold or warm after sitting for a time) is not an issue. If the smoke is heavy or continuous during driving there may be a mechanical problem, take into the dealer.

Yep. I just need to find a shop for installation.
You really have no idea what you are talking about!!!
Never seen that ever on my 2018 charger scat pack. My break him process was easy till 1500 miles then I started driving it a little harder nothing past 4000 rpms. When I hit 3000 miles then I’d floored it several times. Piston rings sealed perfectly and no oil loss or smoke.
i drove the shit out of mine off the lot still runs the same at over 2k mileage
My ride smokes onstartup. Wait it's a 7.3l diesel... if it doesnt smoke some things wrong.
I want to thank you for making this video. I now have a new topic for my channel. Weak soft men who buy fast cars.

You’re the best part of this video
He sure is purty though.
Car on incline cranshaft in oil. Splashe's into cylinders over powers oil rings plus engine was cold
Also you can add a set of headers ,bigger throttle body ,Hellcat air box ,after market exhaust system and a tune and you will definitely feel the difference
Dude seriously, What was the point .
You really have no idea .
Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but did you conduct the break in process as directed by the manufacturer? If not then the proper seating of the rings might be the cause of the blow by. Not a mechanic, just saw a few videos about the breaking in of a new dodge challenger. Nice ride and hope you enjoy it for many years to come brother.
After watching this & i am still sticking on getting my hellcat in March
When you have smoke on start up that goes away after initial start up. That's going to be your valve guide seals going bad.
Steven Petres or piston rings allowing oil to seep past into the cylinder
@@matmat3126 correct
@@tierrelong8288 what about the intake manifold not sealing properly? I know the 360 Engine had that problem.
Yep, had that issue on my RT.
On the 392 it's just blow by from the crankcase throwing it back into the intake. Completely normal. This is why guys get catch cans.
It's cool you are into cars but if you dont know anything about engines dont pretend to.
Well yea that's why he bought an SRT instead of a scatpack
Yeah that's why he asked people in th comments to make suggestions
That's most coolest thing about the car community, good people brother, that smoke could be from the valves, or you might want to pull each spark plugs and out and exam them, could find out alot from your plugs brother, cool
About the smoke coming out of your exhaust. I had a similar issue with my Challenger RT. Turns out the valve seals were installed incorrectly at the factory in 2 of the cylinders. It took me taking it to the dealer several times for them to figure that out. Hope this helps you out dude.
Michael Saczawa yes it’s valve steam seals either bad or installed incorrectly
Valve seals install incorrectly? Dodge is a joke..
Seriously get to the point man!
The oil smoke comes from built up oil in the head. I used to own a brand new 2014 Challenger SRT8 6 sp. manual. I'm very keen on how the engine runs. At first my car was running hot, sluggish, and sucked gas until I got on the highway. So, I found out about the "Oil Catch Can" that's made for Mopars to "catch" the extra oil before it ends up in the head. It costs $66 and is very easy to install by hand. I had to dump it about every 5,000 miles or every oil change. I also installed a K&N cold air intake at the same time. Man, it made the biggest difference!! The engine ran sharp, cool, and clean after that, no matter how little I drove it. And no more oil smoke! 👍
"I don't know how to answer that question..."😂 392 is a beautiful, versatile engine perfect for enthusiasts...not for people that think working on a car is a drag...
Do us all a favor and sell it so someone with balls can enjoy this beautiful engine.
I drive my 2017 charger scat like I stole it daily. I’ve got 60,000 miles on it since I bought it new with zero complaints. Nothing but tires and brake pads. When you’re buying a car to “mod” looking at hp/$, don’t start with a car that makes around 500hp! Because making north of 500hp and making it reliable isn’t cheap. If it were, you’d see 500+hp cars at every stop light😏
Well said, brother! I have a 17 392 Daytona with only 23k and I've NEVER had any mechanical problems. Only issue is with the interior, the sun baked the glue and the door panel, by the window, is popped up. I have since tinted the windows and keep the cover on. Damn socal sun.
I put 13k on my gt in 6 months lol I dont need 500+hp 460 temps me to get in trouble plenty
Good video bro.. And my 392 has never smoked like that on a start 🤔🤔
New 392s including the RAM pickups also do that on cold start up. It is coming from the valve stem seals, it is normal.
It may be normal for one that is about wore out. I buy new vehicle and it does that its going back.
Sorry. I am factory freak. As long as I got 485 horses I am good
Nice car
Hellcat is to much power i think 500 hp is enough power is like being in shape vs a bodybuilder no need.
My opinion
Josh Sandoval you know that the hellcat also has a 500 hp mode when you don’t want to use all 700 hp
Yes using the blk key instead of the red one
Olso you can use the red key and mod the horsepower
Not when it weighs that damn much. 500hp in a 4000lbs car keeps civic owners talking shit all day
That is a totally another different book
Because if you're not comparing apples to apples you can always buy a very fast bike and leave any car behind
@@joshnalex21 unless its built to compete. In my honest opinion there is no point in owning something with more than average power and handling if that person's not willing to put it to the test. Average driving calls for an average means of transportation.
That smoke at startup was just a little 'oil blowby' and is normal with large block hemis. The best cure is to get an oil catch can so instead of the oil going back through the intake via the breather, the catch can puts the oil back into the engine rather than the intake. You will notice that without a catch can you will loose a few 10's of a quart over time because it gets burned off through ignition. Just make sure to top her off every six months or so...
You make good videos. Very informative. 👌
I used to have an R/T 5.7 6 speed, around town I got about 19 mpg 24 on the highway. Now I have a Mazda, last checked my MPG was in the mid 30's and I now run the cheap gas.

Oil from the PCV return line in the intake pools on the intake valves. Not really an issue, but a catch can will solve it. I put a catch can on my scat at 500 miles. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Why is there a lot of blow by with Dodge engines?
Do you have a catch can? EGR feeds engine gasses and oil particulate into the intake...
Hello, is it normal for a 2016 srt dodge charger to smell a bit like gas on start up? Thanks
That is the main reason why I got the 345. That and the block is tried-and-true in pickup trucks so it is strong, but it was mainly for a good base to build off of. Although the 392 block is what they're using to make the 426 stroker crate engine, I'm just saying. Although that crate engine is $20,000
The easiest and most reliable way to get more power is with a tune. But there isn’t to much calibration tunes for the 392 where as the mustang has a lot of options which makes it so much easier for a mustang to get more power
Well, my Scat Pack Challenger is stock but has a tune by Accelerated Racing Solutions. Stock on drag radials I went 12.40 at California Dragway, with the tune by ARS It has now gone 11.40 @121 at Famoso Dragway. The tunes work great. I did lose 150 lbs in the process.
The Sloan how did you lose 150 pounds in the process?

sorry , i forgot to say-put a catch can-also known as an air/oil separator on that high performance hemi. i have one on my 6.1 srt8.
Ever thought about matte wrapping the roof and trunk lid? Looks good though. Hemi’s not only smoke but do a weird knocking noise eventually, runs all the same.
Yep, it happens to my T/A sometimes too, and it happened to my SRT8 Challenger. Tends to happen more if I park the car on an incline. Most notably it can mean the oil is slightly overfilled and the previous engine run time was very short. It is just blow by getting cleaned out of the intake
My 2014 SRT-8 grenaded at 48k miles. Valve smacked the piston. Covered by warranty. Trade-in for Hellcat 👍🏻
Damn did you drive it hard all the time?
Oh don't tell me that, mine has 53k miles
I got a 2014 w 110k. Dropped a piston 4 months ago for the second time
Try an oil catch can for your intake that could be what the smoke was from just the extra amount of oil buildup in your intake burning off on a start up
I 1987 Iroc-Z 350 did that. Never had any issues with the engine.
I currently own a 14 charger 392. And honestly i bought it bc its a family/muscle car. Yes i knew it'll never be as fast as most pound for pound bc of the weight and its inability to be boosted safely (not saying it can't be, just 6.4 arent as good as the 6.2 boosted). Anyways i put down 498hp and 471tq to the wheels with minor bolt ons and cam upgrade. Its being built now with forged internals and E85 then 175 shot spray. The amount of money i spent i could have had a LS swapped 900hp plus car, but i love my car and im comited now in it. Bottom line, it all depends on your preferences and budget. My car puts down now 543hp 497tq NA with E85 and 683/671 on 175 shot. Mods are:

You really feel every single horsepower when accelerating in the 392 because the 8 speed transmission is so great. I was surprised of how much power it has after trying it out and riding in it. Definitely a car with its own segment and a car in its own class. Its one of a kind!
Yea the 392 is perfect for street use and just awesome due to low gearing so real low end torque kicking in!
Considering eighth gear doesn’t engage until 80 something MPH 9 out of 10 people will never need it.
My boy hit 180 in that motherfucker and that shit is so beautiful I can only imagine what a demon feels like.
Is a Dodge Challenger ok for a guy who’s 5’6 for visibility wise? I drove a charger before as a rental but never driven a challenger. The charger was very roomy inside and I didn’t have any trouble with the blind spots
Roland Bioc it’s comfortable, I’m 6’2” and I own a ‘15 5.7 Challenger. The blind spot that sucks is the right rear C-Pillar. Seeing curbs is kinda hard IMO
Has anyone but anything else than 91 octane. Do they actually ping? I drive a supercharged sn95 and fee times run 87 with no issues. Just asking.
Just some built up oil sitting on an intake valve or two. MOPAR messiah B Mason says this is completely normal and nothing to worry about.
Andrew damn you, I will never get that image out of my head now
Andrew V that’s even more of a reason to trust B Mason, he knows Mopar
But it can build up over time and cause detonation and power loss
$2.359/gal (93) here in Gainesville, Tx. Shell V-Nitro+
That's cheap! Where I live in Ontario Canada, it's about
O.969/litre! So times that by 3.8, that's what it would cost in gallons here! SMH...
That sounds nice. Over the winter man. Here in Maryland it's $2.59 just for regular :{
$3.80 here in Michigan for 93 octane.
What type oil are you using? Also replace one quart for Lucas hi performance synthetic oil stabilizer. Cold start smoking blue, definitely preworn piston oil rings, preworn valve seals would smoke blue(burned oil) like most of the time. Not even catch cans can catch that. All they do is keep Intake manifold ports clean, sensors and accurate fuel ratio. Even polluted oil can trick the engine computer and trigger a check engine light.
Would just forging the internals affect anything long term if i wanted to stay stock
The number one thing you should have bought when you bought that car was a catch can
RE Oil Smoke at Cold Start .
The Only think I can Think of is Faulty Valve Stem Oil Seal / Seals See what the Dealer Says. NO ! You don't need a Engine Overhaul .
@Michael Gribbins i agree 👌
For any car this problem is usually valve stem seals leaking, means the oil pools after stopping and then burns off when started again.
Yup oil pooling in your intake manifold. When I pulled mine off it had a lot of oil everywhere!
5.7 is gr8 on power and if you want to modd theres lots you can do and still have a strong engine with no issues
Nah
you cant do shit with a 5.7. only 2 cam options and procharger that's it.
I’ve heard the 5.7 stock internals don’t like boost very much, and they still only make 385 crank power. I could get a V6 Camaro with FBO and a 93 pump tune and make close to 330 and have a 500 pound weight difference.
U can cam it long or short headers. And some cylinder heads. and your in scat pack power range Maybe even a bigger intake manifold and all the mustangs are looking at you all silly .hell even a stock 5.7 run just as good as a pony car
@@Numbers1and19more Ive heard the same about 392
Oil catch can man that's it. Yes built up oil.
Absolutely, My father inlaws new Mustang GT did that intermittently before we installed a Oil Catch can. My Cousins 2017 Camaro did the same as well. They all need an oil catch can.
The Sloan this may sound stupid, but what’s the point of the oil catch can?
So the oil can catch cans.
Alexes Quiroz oh nice, don’t want any cans in my hemi.
Alex Gailliard that’s what I was thinking as well
Last time I had smoke like that coming from the exhaust it was a leak in the head gaskets. Check the seals and see if they just need replaced by chance. Also yours could be a slow leak which is why you didn’t see it in the fuel station. Possibly just leave the car sitting for an hour or so and just check how long it takes for the smoke to reappear on start up and see if the amount increases overtime. From the looks it’s probably just a small leak that built up over night.
My scat did that once, it has never done it again it's been 7000 miles since, till this day I don't know what it was...
Spaghetti in the catalytic converters
Dude all you need to do is put a oil catch can on the motor, the first mod that should be done
Valve stem seals are wearing, but not enough to worry.
After the engine warms they close up.
Do you put premium fuel or airplane fuel? I said airplane fuel cause I use it to mix it when I put premium gas in my Nissan maxima from being a high compression engine
Airplane fuel is gas from back in the day how dad explains. Its non ethanol as well which helps help keep the inside of your block clean instead of ethanol fuels
So your advice for upgrading a 392 is to buy a hellcat? No $hit

I'm a Chrysler engineer. This is most certainly an early sign of Turbo Encabulator failure. This is very common on newer FCA products. There is a field service bulletin regarding this. Just call your Dodge dealer and ask to have it replaced or retuned if needed.
Danny brink do you have a email? I have a ram 1500 2012 2wd with a 5.7 hemi I have a couple of questions.
I would have to agree. The original machine had a base plate of prefabulated amulite, surmounted by a malleable logarithmic casing in such a way that the two main spurving bearings were in a direct line with the panametric fan. The latter consisted simply of six hydrocoptic marzlevanes, so fitted to the ambifacient lunar waneshaft that side fumbling was effectively prevented. The main winding was of the normal lotus-o-deltoid type placed in panendermic semi-boloid slots in the stator, every seventh conductor being connected by a nonreversible tremmie pipe to the differential girdlespring on the "up" end of the grammeters.
Catch can. Mine is full between oil changes. 392 with 5k miles.
If.your catch can is full between oil changes you have other issues brother.
Oil catch can would eliminate 90% of that smoke at start up.nothing to worry about.seen brand new ones do it.
A little blue smoke on startup is usually residual oil that leaks into the combustion chamber via valve seals. May also be some oil in the intake manifold if you are not using a PCV can. I wouldn't get too concerned if it doesn't get worse.
Nailed it. Valve seals usually when its a smoke on start up
Ok first if you have any questions about what you can do with the 392 just give alexis a call at speedlogix in west palm beach and she will let you know what you can do to add more power.
WHATCH OUT FOR THE MDS LIFTER FAILURE
