As another Australian, I agree. Potato puts too much emphasis on the second syllable (lengthening it), rather than having each syllable pretty much equal in duration, so it sounds funny when Potato says Uluru.
I recently finished a game with a similar build. Holy sites, with desert folklore and work ethic, plus the sugbas were an amazingly fun combination. I eventually turned that into a culture win since I couldn't be bothered micromanaging a religious or domination game on a large map. Mali are so much fun. You want something, you just buy it with their insane gold, or insane faith.
You should really rush scubas in classical era if you're in golden age. The discount in buying builders and settlers are insane and is the key for further snowballing with this civ.
It comes so natural to you. The progression of your development is just so much more smoother than my own. Flawless even Granted I only have 1~2 hundred hours and beat my first Deity just a few days ago but it wouldn't hurt for me to get on this level..
Potato releases this video just after I finished my first Sundy game. He's so much fun to play with. Sub 250 game, so not the quickest win ever, but 1600 culture per turn was pretty good.
I played a game of Desert folklore work ethic Sundiata Keita where I just happened to have the Delicate Arch spawn like 20 tiles away from my capital and when I tell you that I turn that natural wonder into the biggest megalopolis I've ever built in civilization, complete with coliseum, Jebel barkal, and Limitless production once the Wonders that could house great works started popping. Oh my God Sundiata is so much fun to play.
I beat Deity for the 1st time a few weeks ago with Sundiata Keita. I restarted many times, then downloaded Better Balanced Start, and restarted a few more times until and had a really cool capital spawn with plenty of desert hills and quite a few sheep and copper tiles. Got Petra in my capital and it was glorious.
I have a long drive home after work and was thinking about how much fun it would be to play a game with Potato ... but I would get so wrecked! My game play has improved so much thanks to Potato!
Love your work Potato! Since you are next to the Maori this series I would love to give you the insight of pronouncing them closer to what they prefer coming from a NZer The easiest way to explain how to pronounce Maori is to say 'mouldy' but replace the 'LD' with a quickly rolled 'R' For plural, still refer as Maori instead of Moarian 😅
Not sure if it's worth it, but if you put a canal where your dam is, the dam where your aqueduct is and the aqueduct on the mine you can get a +9 industrial zone (+10 if you put a water park on the lake). Also: why not befriend Gilgsmesh when you meet him, was that intentional?
I've recently been playing with the Shuffle++ map mod, it mashes up multiple map types (island plates, continents, fractal, etc.) and gives them all different sea level, rainfall, world age settings, so you end up with a really interesting map that isn't TOO crazy like the got lakes ones can sometimes be.
I played as Sundiata Keita and the desert I spawned next to (actually more like 3 tiles away from) had around 5 tiles total, which I ended up never settling, with only sea access (no fresh water) and nowhere to build an aqueduct. Despite that I think playing on continents with random settings is actually pretty fun.
When I see the thumbnails I'm always like "okay not ALL the starts can be GOATed" but when I saw the first frame of the video I said "holy shit" out loud
The Sundiata meta is really: 1. Get desert start and rush Desert Folklore pantheon 2. Build holy sites and Suguba in all cities if possible (and just buy your buildings) 3. Build theatre squares / buy as many Great Writings as you have room for 4. If Heroes are enabled, use Maui to seed Desert tiles with resources 5. Voidsingers & Triple relic tourism religion go brrrr 6. Suzerain Nazca and Valetta if available 7. Traders, traders everywhere 8. Be wary of early game invasions before your snowball gets rolling, so friend/ally neighbors if possible (you can always wreck them later)
One strat that's worked Very well for me in the past with first governors is using Amani to give me the loyalty of City States, then use their soldiers to find More City States, giving me that first envoy and sending Amani there next. Hoping across the map 5 turns a pop giving me the first meet bonus, clearing large sections of the map, finding other players, natural wonders, and if you're really lucky, circumnavigating the globe.
I can attest that Sundiata is a really slow start. I was like maybe 30 science 30 culture will my opponents were nearing 150 at one point in my game, and I had a lucky start that was really isolated. But once the Wonder started being built and the work ethic started snowballing with double holy site adjacency? Ooh it is a sight to behold.
0:09 Yeah, by people who ALSO do it! Don't let the haters bother you, most of us want to be entertained, if we want to see someone slog through a game of Civ we'll play ourselves!
Hey Potato, another good one! Just a view: This map mode that you are using at last of your 2 games, is just making the game so unreal. Egypt game was overly rivered everywhere, so far this seems in same way…
Obviously, it is easy to go for desert folklore, but I would have liked to see you pick the pantheon religious idols (+2 faith on mines over luxury and bonus resources) or lady of the reeds and marshes (+2 production on desert floodplains, oasis and marshes)
I'm not sure if you've used the Got Lakes script enough, but I would still love to see a short video explaining your thoughts or observations of it. There are so many options!
Sometimes rerolls are necessary, sometime several rerolls! The other day I played Peter and had such a hard time getting a viable start I was beginning to think the game disliked Russia as much as Norway. I finally had a start with a lot of food and production. And with all the food in my capital , even excess, St. Petersburg seemed to be starving and stagnating every other turn. Going to play Sundiata next. You make him look fun! Although, I truly miss Songhai in 5.
I watched this video and the Russia one, and decided to hop on Civ 6. I load into a game with random civ, got Mali and was happy, and immediately not when I found out I started on only Tundra and didn't have desert far away. Reloaded the game, got Russia and got a starting place of a desert and no Tundra anywhere nearby. Sometimes I hate this game :D
The Extra Resources are what do it. I have only been playing the past few days... and I start Immortal, with standard resources... the wet & old for more plains hills in better locations. But I also do randomised tech trees with a few other things too. I keep it to Immortal, because even with this on it's impossible if a civ gets a wonder right away. Russia's O.P. Automatic Border expansion & for SOME weird reason Lauturo leading the Mapucho always starting with a wonder & power-housing science and everything at the level of the other 5 civilisations we know combined! Instead of a 1/1000 game being playable and surviveable in the early game it becomes 1/100 at least with Immortal. I think there should simply be a 2 movement scout strength unit in this game, where other civs can get 1 or 2 warriors & then 3-2 of these other scouts. That way they don't search everything first & grab all of the villages, but also they can't literally start declaring war when your first scout leaves your capital.
