i’ve always thought that the way JD says “it’s gonna be better tomorrow” he says it in a kinda mocking tone like that’s what people who don’t suffer from depression tell the ones who do but most of the time it’s really not the case.

Well, I have a friend with crippling depression and I don't always know how to respond when he's talking about his issues, I'm mostly just a listener and I just want him to be heard you know, since I'm his best friend. I sometimes say things like that line to try and help him because I don't really know how I'm supposed to lift his spirits. Any advice? I just wanna be able to communicate better

@@ajgumpper you don't have to promise that it's going to be better tomorrow, because you can't. Nobody knows what tomorrow has in store.
Just be there for him. Give a listen when he needs to. Let hem know, that it's ok for him to feel like he feels, without feeling guilty about it. I have gone through a year or two with depression, and the most cumbersome thought was that I was so ungratefull. I praised myself lucky for all the things that I had. But I was so depressed because of the things that I didn't had. It made me feel guilty and ashamed of the emotions that where going through me.
Just having someone to talk to and expres myself to without them trying to fix me or telling me that I shouldn't worry or feel the things that I feel, was the one thing I needed the most.
That beeing said, you also don't have to agree with his statement, if you think his oppinion is over exaggerated. (Wich can happen with a depressed and negative mindset.)
You can ask him why he thinks in a certain way so he can vocaly articulate his thought and then maybe he can how unrealistic his point of vieuw is.
Just make shure he feels listend to. And that his emotions are no something to be punished for.
To add a last thing... Try to detach yourself from HIS emotions.
Your friend needs support from a steady rock that doesn't move or shift.
If he gets sad, don't be sad with him, don't go down in his emotion downward spiral. (this is a tough thing to do.)
Also know, that just because he is depressed, doesn't mean that you don't have the right to be happy and positive.
I hope these words may help you buddy.

@@minfuji Thank you so much 😄 I really appreciate the advice. I'm gonna keep listening to him and I'm gonna be there for him every step of the way. After all, it only took him a few weeks to open up to me about his life and his problems haha, maybe I'm kinda good at this stuff. But I'll keep all of that in mind, thanks again!!

    • @minfuji

@@ajgumpper Keep also in mind, that he is batteling his thoughts and his fears from the past and his anxiety from the future. Something you might not fully understand. And that is perfectly ok. You don't have to understand everything that he experience or why he does or doesn't do certain things. And if that is the case, be houghnest about it, say you just can understand how he is feeling, without beeing judgemental about it. This will show that you respect him in his ways. And that you just trivialise his experience by simply saying, "I understand how you feel bro" when in truth you have no idea how his traumas treuly have an impact on him.
And don't feel like you let him down that you"didn't fixed him". Because he is the only one who can fix himself, as long as he has friends who are there for him.
He is in a pit, that might seem bottomless for him.
Don't jump in the pitt with him, but make shure you allways have a hand reaching for him when he finds the courage to jump up and reach for the nearest ledge.
Friends like you are precious, bless you and best of luck with you and your friend.

Fun Fact: They preformed this song on an episode of South Park. I think it was season three, not sure the episode number or title...but it was a mockup of the old Scooby-Doo cartoons where Korn was basically their version of The Mystery Machine Team and they were at South Park to solve a mystery. But throughout the entire episode they were being all nice and everyone thought they were evil and shit. They ended up gaining everyone's trust, and you think it is going to be a normal episode...but no. They end the episode preforming this song. Probably my favorite early episodes of South Park

I love KoRn. I’ve always had an affinity to their music & wasn’t sure why until my adult years. I just recently had the realization that my mom is a narcissist & has victimized my dad to where he is one himself now. My siblings learned to be this same way. I grew up knowing that something was off & was separated from them due to my enlistment in the USMC for years. When I got out I lived w/ my now wife of 3yrs(11yrs together), so I stayed away from my family’s corruption. I could never put words to say what they were before earlier this year. Because I finally had enough of all of their bullshit, I’ve cut all communication w/ them & I’ve never been happier. I’m diagnosed w/ PTSD from the Corps & have clinical depression & anxiety from the mental/emotional abuse my family caused for nearly 34yrs. I wasn’t their only target, but now I won’t be one anymore.

Just one thing quick, I've been binge watching some of your metal music reactions, I loved hearing what your thoughts are about some of my favourite songs you have reacted to.
Also not sure if you are still doing music requests but a song I would like for you to hear is from a lesser known band called Gates of Ishtar. The song in question is Tears (Gates of Ishtar - Tears) from the 1996 Album, A Bloodred Path.
    Happy Halloween

You are not alone friend. I too suffered by a ex husband of my mother. I remember all too well the feeling of hopelessness and being alone. She suffered with drug abuse and would just check out and suffered from abuse regularly too. I used to think to myself.. "how can this possibly get better?". The trials and tribulations both of us have faced made us stronger and better people. The circumstances of course are not a fair trade off but in the end we are who we are because of the demons of our past. I hope that you have found yourself in the best position now FOR YOU.
