Shout out to the young Vivian Campbell here, who was only 20 years old when this was recorded. He played his guitar with no mercy alongside legends like Jimmy Bain, Vinny Appice, and the great RJD.
Campbell is an insanely fantastic guitarist.
First two Dio albums are classics. Vivian Campbell was on fire

I haven't heard every single RJD album but Dream Evil is right up there. I think it's better than The Last in Line.
My personal favorite is his sixth album Strange Highways.

@@AB-gb1om- Adams was phenomenal in his prime, which was long ago. Also, a lot of Manowar is just too cheesy to take seriously. On the first four albums, Adams will give anyone a run for their money. Dio was consistently incredible throughout his career that spanned six decades. How many can singers have done that? That’s why Ronnie is the GOAT.

RJD is not even close to being underrated, especially in the hard rock/metal community. He is regarded as one of the best, if not the single greatest metal vocalist.
Here's the thing: Ronnie James Dio was recorded on wax BEFORE the Beatles. Imagine a little guy from New Hampshire, in the late 50s, sticking it out until he became a Metal God in the mid 70s and beyond. One of a kind, never to be duplicated!
Dio is my DAWG! Saw him live 3 times and loved every minute of it. Crime against humanity that he still isn't in the HOF.
you guys should check out Sign of the Southern Cross. its Dio in Black Sabbath. It's one of his best vocal performances with Sabbath.
"Stand Up And Shout" is a must! Also "Straight Through The Heart" and "Gypsy" are sure fire!

I love it when you guys listen to Dio, you have to check out Gypsy, melodic AND heavy as hell, the entire Holy Diver album is a classic, not a bad note on it and zero filler.
I think Gypsy gets passed over a bit just because this record is so chock full of absolute bangers from start to finish, but it is one of my all time favorite Dio tunes.
I totally dig Gypsy too, its got a great drive.
Last in Line album is also great

@Flo1984100 what? Hardly anyone knows that song unless youre a Dio fan . It wasn't even released as a single. Holy Diver, Rainbow In The Dark, Last In Line....there are a lot more well known songs

In order for a song to be appreciated or underappreciated it has to be listened to and most people who hear this song for the first time react like Ryan and George just did. So what you are saying is that it is unknown to most because they haven’t heard it but to those who have heard it already I sincerely doubt it’s underappreciated.

I got lucky enough my first ever concert was black sabbath the Dio years, what an amazing voice he had!
I saw them when they toured in 2010 or whenever, just. Efore Dio passed.... "Tony didn't want to to do this song tonight, but I did... so here's die young" - Dio... I was so happy die young is my fave.
You guys should definitely check out 'stand up and shout' from this same album! It's a very good and powerful song!
Vinny pronounces it "APP-a-see". He's a killer drummer. He was with Ronnie in Black Sabbath and came over to the Dio band.
And also went back to Sabbath with Dio two times, last one as Heaven and hell. The Dehumanizer reunion was actually supposed to be with Cozy Powell on drums and they even rehearsed but then Cozy fell off a horse and Vinny was back in instead. I absolutely love Vinny, he is my favourite drummer and although Cozy was great i actually prefer Vinny.
@@Stefan- He's one of those drummers that you can put him behind ANY kit and he'll sound like himself. He beats those drums like they owe him money.
@@TobyGuidry Yes indeed, he has a lot of personality in his drumming as well as really heavy groove, i could probably tell its him among a thousand different drummers just by listening and that says a lot.
He is too "dry" for me, there is no groove in his fills.

The whole album is amazing. I bought it when it came out in 1983 with a LOT of expectation and it not only lived up to it, it was even better than I thought it would be. Every song is a classic track.

This whole album was fn amazing!!! DIO is the master! I was 16 when this came out. Saw this concert in Portland Oregon, at a small venue the Starry Night! Stayed all night for general admission ended up in the second row. The late great Lemmy Kilmister/MotorHead opened ❤

Was 13, just the age when I started to acquire a music taste. Kind of lucky that Dio just did his solo career at the time, I was hooked. Also I was into RPG and fantasy so it fired on all cylinders.
This album never gets old.
One of the best concerts ever was around 1992. Dio at a smaller club. Awesome!

He's not trying to mimic the devil though, per se, but the "Church Elders", the religious zeal, the mandatory never to enjoy anything about life except servitude to Old Testament morals.
Ronnie James Dio was always the people's advocate, never the devil's.

What is amazing about Ronnie James Dio is that he is appealing to SO many people from different genres of music , most of them non-metal. From Hip-Hop aficionados like Lost in Vegas, to classical musicians to vocal coaches. EVERY reaction video I've seen on Dio has made fans of them all. Stand Up and Shout is definitely balls to the wall, speed-metal Dio. 'I Speed at Night' from his Last in Line is another straight forward banger.
Ive listen to this song a million times and still gives me goose bumps but to share it again for the first time with ya'll and see ya react to it the same way I have dor all these yrs was a real treat....and its been on my playlist for 40yrs so welcome to the club.

I Got into Dio in 1984 when I was 14, and the Last in Line was released...The way you guys react and smile when you listen takes me right back to hearing him for the first time....
As someone mentioned above, I highly recommend "Dio: Dreamers Never Die" on showtime....an amazing biopic spanning his entire musical career, beginning in 1956-57 I believe....yes, Rjd has been making music since Elvis and Bill Haley...BEFORE the Rolling Stones,The Beatles,and Led Zeppelin.
It's truly a travesty he's not in "the music hall of fame"

I'm not meaning to put down Def Leppard when I say that guitarist Vivian Campbell is "wasted in that band" but he's supposed to be OUT FRONT in the music! I think he was about 21 when he laid this stuff down. Just outstanding...
Discovered Ozzy in my teens and Dio not until later on in adulthood....but a complete travesty he's not in the hall despite his undeniable influence between Rainbow, Black Sabbath and his solo work. Definitely one of my favorite songs from him, glad you love it! Awesome request!

I agree with brad. gypsy is great and even the softer caught in the middle is excellent. the vocals on shame on the night deserve a medal. i saw dio at the hammersmith odeon on the holy diver tour, then many years later when in his 60s at the astoria in london when he did the entire holy diver album. voice sounded just like the album. a truly great night.
The guitar player was an unknown 19 yr old kid from Ireland named Vivian Campbell.
I think it’s time for you guys to do this entire album. Absolute classic Metal masterpiece.
"Caught In The Middle" still is one of my fav. I also bought the remixed version by Joe Barresi and there's no fadeout on this version so you can hear the band jamming until the end. I get goosebumps everything I hear it... Amazing lineup, magical really...

As a die hard Dio fan, there's another person I highly recommend to you named Jorn Lande.
I've seen people refer to him as the "second coming" of Dio - and while I don't think anyone will ever reach the peak of Dio, he's certainly a worthy successor.
DEFINITELY check out his work with the band "Avantasia" where he is a frequent guest singer. Their song "The Scarecrow" is an absolute trip and Jorn shines through as an otherworldly powerhouse the whole way through.
Jørn Lande is also the main singer in Pentakill and does some fantastic work there, even though it is unfortunately made with inspiration from League of Legends.
I find Jorn Lande's timbre and style more akin to David Coverdale than Ronnie James Dio, but he is ultimately a god-like rock singer. Asides Avantasia, Jorn Lande has the ARK albums, Masterplan, Beyond Twilight and Arjen Lucessen's Ayreon records, aside from his own band. In my opinion, the singer most resemblng Dio, these days, is Russel Allen from Symphony X (who also sings in Avantasia and Ayreon). My top these days would be: Pain of Slavation's Daniel Gildenlow, Dino Jelusick (Magnus Karlsson's Free Fall and Michael Romeo's War of the World's album), Jorn Lande and Russel Allen, in no particular order. So if the guys want to react to anything by Avantasia, Ayreon, Symphony X (I know they have done so in the past), Pain of Salvation or Magnus Karlsson's projects (The Battle or Free Fall where you'll find all of these guys) it would be awesome.

Dio is one of the very very few singers I've heard live that sounds as good as they do in the studio. Not many at all can do that. Very few. He was so powerful.
The original drummer and guitar players band (Last In Line) are playing right there in Vegas on 9/2 at Count’s Vamp’d. Great show, great band!
This is decent. I wouldn’t go hard for it, but Dio is one of the few singers of this style I can rock with.

@@theYuGiOhseasonzeroguy hmm, tough to put my finger on. I tend to like a lot of more “extreme” vocals. I love good cleans, too. You know I’ve never really considered who my favorite singers are, any style. Maynard comes to mind immediately, but my brain crowds pretty quickly after that - just so many good singers.
I do run into lots of music I would be head over heels for if the vocals were different.
@yhamez cool. To be honest. I'm mostly into more classic metal(80s, early 90s). Sort of trying to expand my taste into some more modern bands, but its kinda hard for me to find something I like since I really love that 80s sound

When Vivian Campbell went for the audition with Dio, he was only 21 years old. As per one of the Guitar player magazine articles published during the late 80's, Dio made him drunk before the audition and he played like hell while being drunk. The next day, when he woke up from sleep at Dio's place, Dio said "Hey man ! you're hired" !

The guitarist on the first few DIO albums was Vivian Campbell, and on this first album he was 19 yrs old! He's now in Def Leppard, but he was soooooo good in his youth I can't hold that against him ;)
I saw Dio when i was 14 and that concert blew my mind! I have been a fan ever since. When they say this music is old school metal, I say no this is real metal music!
