Ronnie James "Dio" Padavona was one of the best vocalists in rock/metal. He fronted bands Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio and Heaven and Hell. Dio's name comes from being named after mob member Johnny Dio. I don't know where Dio got the "devil-horn" hand gesture from but he did popularize it. Check out songs Rainbow in the Dark, Holy Diver, Last in Line, I Speed at Night.

The sign that Ronnie waves is called the Maloik (or malocchio). He credits his Italian grandmother for showing him that as a child. In old Italians and other ancient cultures, it's a superstitious symbol that protects you from people giving you the evil eye or a curse/bad luck. Conversely, it is also used to give the evil eye (or curse/bad luck) as well. The "horns" hand gesture is teferred to in Italian as "Mano Cornuta". Ronnie James Dio IMHO the best metal male vocalist ever. Check out some other popular songs by Dio. For starters, The Last In Line, Rainbow in the Dark and Holy Diver. I think you'll like them. Just my personal preference but I recommend the studio versions or live versions from 1983/1984 (When Vivian Campbell was the guitarist)
He was also a very cool guy who always made time for his fans to talk with them, sign things, take photos, etc.

In medieval Europe, especially in places like Italy and France, public shaming of cuckolds was common. There were even "charivari" parades where men believed to be cuckolds were made to wear antlered headdresses and were paraded around town. The act of making horned gestures behind someone's head became a covert way to mock someone, suggesting their spouse was unfaithful.

This is my fav song by my fav singer!
To answer your question on whether it is a coincidence that he called himself "Dio" while it means "God" in Italian: he is Italian American. According to his autobiography, there was a mafia boss whose last name was Diogene; Dio for short. He thought it sounded cool, so it became his stage name. Later, he came to a fancy Italian restaurant for dinner with his wife. The waiter kept bringing them lush dishes and expensive wines, all free. Eventually, he discovered that the restaurant owner assumed that the singer was related to the notorious mob boss, and they spoiled the couple out of fear.

The sign was made by Italians for centuries. Mano cornutta (horned hand). Used to ward off evil and sometimes to curse too.
The "mano cornuta" has roots in ancient civilizations, long before the advent of Christianity. Both the Greeks and Romans had symbols and gestures related to horns that could signify various things, from magical protection to insults. For instance, in Roman culture, making the "cornuta" gesture at someone was a way to mock them, insinuating that they were a cuckold (i.e., their wife was unfaithful, and they were raising another man's children).
Interesting, in all of Mediterranean Europe and Latin America, horns are still associated with being a cuckold.

Dio was the band launched by veteran singer Ronnie James Dio in 1983... and yes, he popularized the "🤘" devil's horns (He said it was a Catholic superstition of the "evil eye" which his old grandmother from Italy would often flash)
Born Ronald James Padavona, he was raised Catholic in New York state... his antagonism towards religion would have him change his name to "Dio" ('God' in latin) in the late 1950's when he first became a singer. Ronnie Dio spent the 1960's singing covers of do-wop songs as Ronnie Dio & The Prophets (and other acts)... He formed a rock band that became Elf in 1971 after hearing the new 'heavy' rock from Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath... Elf opened for Deep Purple numerous times.
In 1975, Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore left the band and formed Rainbow, hiring Ronnie James Dio as the first singer and making him a star for the first time... Ronnie was fired in 1979 after Blackmore wanted a more pop-rock sound.
In 1980, Ronnie replaced Ozzy Osbourne as the singer of Black Sabbath, until 1982... a dispute led to him leaving the band.
In 1983, Ronnie James Dio opted to name his new band Dio (it was more for name recognition, rather than ego... he claimed) and released their platinum-selling debut album 'Holy Diver'... the original band featured guitarist Vivian Campbell (now in Def Leppard)... (the late) Jimmy Bain on bass... Vinny Appice on drums (who played w/ Ronnie in Black Sabbath)... and Claude Schnell (keyboards)... but a dispute w/ Campbell led to the guitarist leaving in 1985 after 3 albums... This tour in 1986 was done w/ Craig Goldy on guitar.
Dio (the band) would go through quite a few line-ups w/ Ronnie being the only original member... He reconciled w/ the members of Black Sabbath in 1992, only to leave the band again in 1993... and again in 2006 (Sabbath w/ Dio called themselves Heaven & Hell) ... while Dio would record and tour for 3 decades.
Sadly, Ronnie James Dio was diagnosed w/ stomach cancer in 2009, and he passed away in 2010 (R.I.P.)

They actually might be. Because Ronnie comes from an Italian American family.

I'll second this. The album is Rainbow Rising, the song is Stargazer, and it's probably one of the best five metal songs of all time.
