Between the Master's random Soviet mushroom gig and Davros almost choosing to go with the communist revolutionaries over the neo-Nazis in "Davros", Doctor Who sure loves almost giving major villains character development through flirting with socialism before going back to being evil for little to no reason. Also, Dhawan!Master being a mushroom communist who plays guitar at the same time as 12 is doing the whole Vault Era thing brings some weird, weird possibilities to mind.
Re body horror, WHAT ABOUT THE TOCLAFANE! They scarred me for life. Also, isn't RTD allegedly working on a Who televisual universe-a soviet Master spin-off show sounds a great idea!

Oh, when it comes to body horror, you shouldn't forget Tom Baker's Scratchman! (Spoilers ahead) A whole village turning into Scarecrows in a gruesome way? Check. The POV of one of them trying to cling to who they were desperately while being completely unable to do so? Check. A woman being killed by becoming a tree after being encircled by the scarecrows ? The Doctor halfway through turning into an insect monster? A hell full of poor souls turned into willless abominations by the devil himself and and then used as fuel? Check all of these.
i know you re-released this cause of audio issues, i don't know if it was different for everyone else but the issues came about around your drunken speech about zagrues and honestly it seemed to fit until i saw your tweet about this i didn't know there was an issue
I am so sorry for Sasha, cause he seems to act his eyes out for this character that has no personality. Like... this feels like the Simmaster again, except with Simmaster there was actually a reason for why he was so filled with anger and sadness, it was set up, the Time War. With Spymaster, he gets introduced like that, with no set up for why he is like that, so you don't feel anything for him. It feels like an actor reading lines. (Also it kinda annoys me when people say they like him more than the Simmaster, when they are both playing the same archetype? What's the difference? Is it just recency bias, or am I too much of an RTD fanboy to notice why the Simmaster didn't work, but this one does?) Honestly, that characterization of him just wanting a happy life in Russia, with friends and drugs is pretty fun and interesting... and kinda makes more sense to me? Like, the whole idea with the Sasha Master is that he supposedly is on the verge of mental breakdown and nothing matters to him anymore. I feel like trying to find meaning in a regular life and trying to numb the pain with drugs makes more sense for this character than just angrily chasing the Doctor again.

I first listened to the 8th Doctor stories in order, and Zagreus still left me scratching my head with questions of what's actually happening. Can wait for the drunk retelling of "Masterfull". It would be fitting, considering the ending.

Surprised you don't like the divergent universe arc! There's certainly some flops in there lol but it it's one of my favorite runs of Doctor who ever. Natural History of Fear may be the best doctor who story ever as well

What upset you most in doctor who? The trail of the time lord showed us the 13th doctor, With the Seventh Doctor the idea was to make him semi evil as many did love the first doctor who did scare people seeing him as maybe evil. But when we did get the 13th Doctor nothing happened! I have been waiting my whole life for the show to catch up to trail of the time lord and we see nothing! I like the female doctor idea but Romana/Leela later The Reni , trying to find the 13th doctor leading to trial of the time lord.
The Valeyard wasn't the 13th Doctor, though (and it would've been kind of weird to cast Michael Jayston). The Valeyard is an amalgamation of all the Doctor's evil from the end of their life - in the episode, they say something like "twelfth and final regeneration", which depending on your interpretation, probably means between 10.5 (twelfth body) and 11 (end of regeneration cycle), or that the Time Lords/Master weren't aware of the Doctor's extended regeneration cycle, and the Valeyard is from any point between 10.5 and whenever the Doctor pops their clogs. Also, as I see it (although various stories and fans have other ideas) the Valeyard is a sort of Watcher-type incarnation, or like the Kanpo Rimpoche version of the Hermit, he's not yet part of the real timeline, he's come back from a future timeline to try and ensure his own existence. Perhaps the situations precipitating the Valeyard emerging never even came to be, and he's stuck on a temporal cul-de-sac bothering the Sixth Doctor?

Eh I think Zagreus was cool. Zagreus and Scherzo together are a hell of a payoff for the Charlie arc and I didn't think it was particularly confusing but I've noticed people new to Big Finish hear it's great, skip to Zagreus and call it confusing. Skipping to the season finale of serialized show is confusing. Not Sam of course, just in general from reviews I've seen. There's definitely a kind of hubris that tends to happen when something that's hyped up exists. Kingdom Hearts 3 was probably the funniest example in the last few years and it got the same complaints from people who didn't even try to get context. Overestimating the ability to intuit what's going on and then blaming a story for not being intuitive is just pretty silly.
