For over 2 years I have wanted to make a video about how Will Smith's movies are received by critics. Don't ask me why. I'm not a big Will Smith fan and I haven't even seen most of these movies. But Rotten Tomatoes really does not like this man.

annie only got a 28% because people were mad that “annie” was black :/ they harassed her and sent so much hate to the movie but it was actually really good
For real! I was so shocked because the movie was actually super fun and way more enjoyable than the original for me :(
I pretty much grew up with that version of Annie. Didn’t even know Annie was originally white until a few years ago-- It shouldn’t matter what the actress looks like, just if she’s good or not, and the actress for Annie definitely was. But apparently it doesn’t work like that, it’s shocking how disgusting people can be.
Fr and honestly imo the original Annie doesn’t hold up outside of the actor who plays Ms. Hannigan, especially in comparison to the new one
I grew up with both versions but the new one, in my opinion, is way better. Way better cinematography, amazing acting, great remakes of the OG songs if I remember correctly. Its great!
I was thinking that was likely the reason bc ppl were obsessed with Annie being a ginger for some reason
Damn right I believed Shark Tale had a 94%!!! How dare you slander the literal ONLY reason Will Smith was in the academy in the first place.
Lmaooo I was honestly flabbergasted as well

For most of his career it really felt like all his decisions were based on the sentiment of "I'm Will Smith. Everybody loves me. Everybody will see this movie and since I'm Will Smith they'll at least think they like it" But as we saw that had a very low success rate.
Except Shark Tale. Justice for Shark Tale.
YEAH JUSTICE FOR SHARK TALE!!!!
my childhood man
shark tale's legacy will live on
Actually i'm one of the people that watch movies just bcos there is will smith. Yet i'm not disappointed bcos i love most of his movies. I don't care about the slap. I still like his movie. He is a good actor.
Men in black, bad Boys, and shark tale are good movies.
Wew. Was about to blow a gasket before you added that last part
That was a big save there lady
Cos oh boy, the things I would've..oooh boy
Edit: jokes aside tho it WAS very VERY successful. Box office wise. Standing to the test of time wise, outside the cult of personality lens of viewing the movies, sure maybe less so
But yea. It rly should challenge ppl to be more critical about their fervent worshipping of individual actors and like watching movies bcos they're in them
These ppl are just normal ppl doing their day to day jobs
If we aren't going to be like "omg can't wait for the 2Q quarterly report. I usually don't read them but Danny just has that..pizzazz that other accountants don't you know? It ALWAYS makes the numbers pop"
Like it's normal to like how a person looks
Or the style of how they act
But when you center your viewing choices on primarily who is in it instead of the concept of the film
I think it sort of makes the whole industry suffer as a whole
Bcos execs see that ppl like mediocre movies but they don't view it as mediocre, and they say "lets make more of that, seems like a great style of movies to make! Let's not deviate from it much bcos ppl loooove the movie - the filmography, the director, the lighting, the pacing, the screenwriting"
Nick's dedication to pronouncing the word gemini in the way that he does is honestly commendable

You missed the hit 1996 movie "independence day" where Will Smith helps save the the world from aliens on the fourth of July. Fantastic movie, 67% on rotten tomatoes, but I guess that adds to your point 😅
That one scene had me in a massive chokehold as a kid. I wasn't safe while watching cutscenes from Shadow the Hedgehog
Yeah, I was surprised ge didn't do that one.
Oh true.. I guess I was assuming all the movies were covered, but maybe I spaced on that point... I just remembered my mom rented an early film with him with other actors like Donald Sutherland... turned out to be a serious drama.. we weren’t expecting it at all 😱
Fantastic movie! Fun fact! There was actually a microplayset of New York in which you can knock down lady liberty, the sears tower, and the wtc. By trendmasters.
Rotten tomatoes is useless. Just find actual individual movie critics who's opinion generally aligns with your own
Yeah! This makes so much more sense than looking at the aggregate number!
If you click on the percentages of movies, you’ll see the actual average ratings which helps out more. A movie could get 100% if everyone rates it just above average like a 6/10
i think he was being sarcastic about rotten tomatoes being a good source
Rotten tomatoes would make a terrible sauce
@@ashegrey3042 this!!
Often times if the audience score is high and critics score is low, I know I'll at least have fun watching it. If the critic score is high and audience is low, chances are it's pretty bad.
Sometimes that’s true. But sometimes I think the critics can be right and the audience is just wrong. It’s 50/50, it’s not always that the audience score being high w/ the critics score low makes a fun movie to watch, sometimes the movies actually suck, and sometimes decent movies get a low audience score and critical acclaim, just to become a cult classic down the line
@@yurinoworry oh absolutely! Obviously what I said isn't the end all be all, just what I tend to think when looking at movie reviews. And of course, the only way to know for sure if you'll like something is just to watch it yourself lol
this!!! (but not secrets of dumbledore i’m a harry potter fan and i hated it lmfao)
@Golden Fish I think it also good to remember opinions are subjective, so if you are on the fence about seeing something then it’s probably good to look at sources that at least explain why they held their opinions. Did they rate low because they disagreed with messaging that you’d have supported? Did they rate low because it relies on common tropes that you happen to find fun and enjoyable? Critics who share your interests and tastes are good to listen to the opinions of rather than just any random critic too. Plus there’s the opinions of friends, family, and even creators you follow on social media that’ll probably be more useful to you. I know if my eldest brother likes a film there’s a high chance I’ll hate it lol.
I personally don’t want to commit to around 1.5 hours or more of a movie, just to see what I think, if there’s no indication from elsewhere that it’ll be enjoyable.
Even though his movies might not all be great, he’s the best part of them
Hes always the star of every shit show
Legit he was the only reason firs suicide squad was tolerable
Yeah most of Will Smith's worst movies aren't bad because of his acting. Hell even in After Earth (which is just awful for a number of reasons) as boring and cliche as his character is, Will Smith does play the part well. It's just not a well written character. Plenty of really talented actors (Christian Slater or Julia Roberts for example) give 110% in the roles they take on but a fair amount of films they've done aren't very good.
He's charming and all but a lot of his acting is so mediocre bro. Have you seen Gemini man? Lol. He does have a few great performances tho
Edit: ok more than a few. My point is, he's either a great actor or a very mediocre one depending on the script

I feel like no one talks about how batshit insane it is that Will and Jada named their children Willow and Jaden-
Like what
I guess since it's so normal for men to name their sons after themselves, I at least respect them for being equal opportunity gender wise.
I think it's kinda cute. Naming your kid after yourself isn't uncommon and this way neither kid has to be a Jr. Also Willow and Jaden are nice names on their own,
So obvious, yet I’ve never realized…
Honestly it blows my mind the way it happened so perfectly, like they just happened to have a daughter and a son so they could genderswap their names. Every time I always wonder what if they had had two daughters/sons?
well, lots of people name their kids after themselves and I think this was a clever way to gender swap them so they would be similar but not identical. (not counting trey ) His eldest son is named William but they call him Trey since he is the 3d Will Smith.

I think part of that was the point to then ultimately be like “we aren’t so different after all :)” (with his orc partner), but then also literally everyone was racist towards the faeries/fae.

very tiny detail about this, but i agree a lot with your opinion on spider-man no way home, the ending just lost it for me, i'm glad someone else agrees with me
While I do like the ending because it's a fresh start and he gets to be the spiderman weve always wanted him to be, just like the comics, I do believe a lot of the plot points in that movie were forced to try to make it work. Like there's lots of times where characters don't act like they should or are just too plain stupid. It's like they were like "we want this ending and the three Spidermen to meet so let's work backwards from there." The ending doesn't feel truly deserved because it was kind of forced to happen.
Omg guys I just recently rewatched it and noticed how corny bad some of the dialogue is and certain interactions are like weird but I can’t describe it well enough. I remember loving the hell out of it and I still do but my goodness everyone I think is so starstruck by the crossover aspect that they don’t remember awkward pauses and cheap dialogue that could’ve been written better.
As someone who hadn’t seen any of tom holland’s previous spider man movies I only went to see this for Andrew and Tobey but after seeing the trailer and all the teaser clips my expectations for the last fight scene and also the whole movie were over the moon. The fight scene tbh was a bust and the movie overall was okay the only redeeming part for me being again seeing Andrew and Tobey together. To be fair though this could all be on me for expecting too much from the movie but this isn’t one of those movies that I’d voluntarily watch again.
Spiderman is too corny for me to watch lmao. I just can't do marvel. It's always so cheesy.

A few nights ago I had a dream that I was saying to everybody that Will Smith really should have done a rap song for every movie he ever made like he did for Men in Black and Wild Wild West
here's my take: wild wild west whips ass. it's stupid as hell and has a couple... regrettable scenes but it feels like the mario movie to me: what the hell were they thinking making this, but also there's no other movie like this and it is very fun
okay you're correct about spiderman NWH. It was very fun, but it has absolutely no meaningful plot, and I don't think it did a good job continuing Peter's arc. Great vibes, not so great storytelling (in my opinion)
Honestly dude. There's only so much an actor can do when they're beholden to the writers/producers of a movie. Im not trying to argue that its the writers or producers fault but theres more to play towards a critique of a movie than a critique of an actor. I honestly feel like will smith is a high end actor. Countless movies I've watched containing will smith have honestly been really good to watch. Personally though, maybe it might just be having watched movies with him in it as a youngling that my ability to critique his acting in a viable level was at a lower level then as an adult, but i dont feel like most actors/actresses are as responsible towards the movies acclaim as an actor rather than a writer/director. Not to mention the reach/demographic of a movie as well. Case in point. Hancock. When i first watched it as a teen i absolutely loved it, felling like the premise was amazing. Super heros, internal conflicts between what you want/what is right, or even trying to overcome your struggles were themes i resonated with as a teen, and though i can see more clearly now how that movie wasn't all that great, it just goes to show that movies that have a more specific demographic dont do well in the broader sense of movie critiques, but do well in those specific demographics. Its like saying Metallica isnt a good band because you dont hear them on pop based radio stations(which plays the top 100 songs of any year) its honestly heAvily disregarding towards their craftsmanship as artists and like such, it gives a clearer understanding towards how misjudged your video premise is. No offense. Be more understanding. Click bait videos are annoying. And maybe with a bit more consciousness you won't have to upload Garbage *fancy french accent* content and maybe more meaningful, in depth, and understanding towards your content. Not just one sided straight fact points. No one likes a power point of view.
This is coming from someone who used to love your content but has come to see it might also lack understanding. For example this video premise comes to persuade will Smith as a poor actor by saying his movies flopped. Which is pretty short sighted. I hope you read this as a critique from love and understand that you( and all of us ) can be and do better
Yeah honestly I was thinking the same thing. I thought it was kinda weird that the whole premise of the video was based on rotten tomato scores. Like that's the most accurate measure of a good/enjoyable movie lmao. Tbh this is the type of video I'd expect for him to post on his second channel, cuz it kinda feels....sloppy. I hate to sound hyper critical. But yeah that's the vibe I got watching this. Felt very shallow and judgmental, in an uninteresting way. Hope that makes sense.
The example that I like to give to explain why rotten tomatoes is unreliable is to imagine a movie where every single critic gives it a score of 6/10. From me telling you that, you could conclude that it isn't a terrible movie but not a masterpiece. But since rotten tomatoes considers anything 6 and above as "fresh" it would give this hypothetical movie a 100%, which would give one the impression that it is a masterpiece. In other words, rotten tomatoes can reward mediocrity, while inventive movies that people either love or hate would get a score near 50. As far as review aggregates go, metacritic is much more valuable because it takes into account how positive/negative a review is.

I think this my favorite video from your channel. I don't know why it apparently has taken you a long time to deliver this to us, but your hesitation was definitely unfounded. The video was humorous and insightful and in light of recent events very relevant to his movies. Good job Nick!

I WILL THROW HANDS FOR SHARK TALE, I DON’T CARE IF I DON’T REMEMBER THE ICONIC. MOVIE.
I absolutely agree and I will be throwing your hands as well
I HATED WILD WILD WEST! Couldn’t take it, walked out of the theater (I was 17 at the time)…
Ur white
The editing on this channel is aways top tier. Also, I'd absolutely love the animal crossing content!!
nick i can no longer support you if you genuinely believe that sharktales is a bad movie
I second this!
man must have overestimated his fans' loyalty to make such an obviously unpopular statement about a priceless piece of our heritage.
This was fire, please do more of this sort of thing
If you are black than you grew up watching 'Secret Life Of Bees' and that movie is absolutely beautiful. I didn't know he produced it and I wouldn't have guessed he was capable of producing such a heartbreaking but yet beautiful movie ❤️
20/10 would recommend you watching that movie
12:29 reminds me of the "Who do you think donated a heart to you" or whatever they're called tiktoks.
nick is such a humble content creator, how does he do it
Of course they're bad because the only actual good movie to ever exist is Morbius (2022) starring Jared Leto (God)
Jared Leto broke into my house and morbed all over my cat it was really awkward
9:21 I used to be sad because I didn't have any way to publicly show my interests in the form of a phone case, but, boy, did Nick have the solution for that. THANK YOU, NICK!
Its Monday, time to watch the youtuber that has QUICKLY become my favorite youtuber.
I love this! Also critics on Rotten Tomatoes are ALWAYS right about movies 🤪🤪

Song at 13:36 is Eyecatcher by Howard Harper-Barnes. It's a beautiful song
I've been meaning to ask for ages, but I love the Francis Bacon style painting behind you. Its very cool.
