    For over 2 years I have wanted to make a video about how Will Smith's movies are received by critics. Don't ask me why. I'm not a big Will Smith fan and I haven't even seen most of these movies. But Rotten Tomatoes really does not like this man.

      I pretty much grew up with that version of Annie. Didn’t even know Annie was originally white until a few years ago-- It shouldn’t matter what the actress looks like, just if she’s good or not, and the actress for Annie definitely was. But apparently it doesn’t work like that, it’s shocking how disgusting people can be.

    For most of his career it really felt like all his decisions were based on the sentiment of "I'm Will Smith. Everybody loves me. Everybody will see this movie and since I'm Will Smith they'll at least think they like it" But as we saw that had a very low success rate.

      Wew. Was about to blow a gasket before you added that last part
      That was a big save there lady
      Cos oh boy, the things I would've..oooh boy
      Edit: jokes aside tho it WAS very VERY successful. Box office wise. Standing to the test of time wise, outside the cult of personality lens of viewing the movies, sure maybe less so
      But yea. It rly should challenge ppl to be more critical about their fervent worshipping of individual actors and like watching movies bcos they're in them
      These ppl are just normal ppl doing their day to day jobs
      If we aren't going to be like "omg can't wait for the 2Q quarterly report. I usually don't read them but Danny just has that..pizzazz that other accountants don't you know? It ALWAYS makes the numbers pop"
      Like it's normal to like how a person looks
      Or the style of how they act
      But when you center your viewing choices on primarily who is in it instead of the concept of the film
      I think it sort of makes the whole industry suffer as a whole
      Bcos execs see that ppl like mediocre movies but they don't view it as mediocre, and they say "lets make more of that, seems like a great style of movies to make! Let's not deviate from it much bcos ppl loooove the movie - the filmography, the director, the lighting, the pacing, the screenwriting"

      Sometimes that’s true. But sometimes I think the critics can be right and the audience is just wrong. @Golden Fish I think it also good to remember opinions are subjective, so if you are on the fence about seeing something then it’s probably good to look at sources that at least explain why they held their opinions. Did they rate low because they disagreed with messaging that you’d have supported? Did they rate low because it relies on common tropes that you happen to find fun and enjoyable? Critics who share your interests and tastes are good to listen to the opinions of rather than just any random critic too. Plus there’s the opinions of friends, family, and even creators you follow on social media that’ll probably be more useful to you. I know if my eldest brother likes a film there’s a high chance I’ll hate it lol.
      I personally don’t want to commit to around 1.5 hours or more of a movie, just to see what I think, if there’s no indication from elsewhere that it’ll be enjoyable.

      Yeah most of Will Smith's worst movies aren't bad because of his acting. Hell even in After Earth (which is just awful for a number of reasons) as boring and cliche as his character is, Will Smith does play the part well. It's just not a well written character. Plenty of really talented actors (Christian Slater or Julia Roberts for example) give 110% in the roles they take on but a fair amount of films they've done aren't very good.

      While I do like the ending because it's a fresh start and he gets to be the spiderman weve always wanted him to be, just like the comics, I do believe a lot of the plot points in that movie were forced to try to make it work. Like there's lots of times where characters don't act like they should or are just too plain stupid. It's like they were like "we want this ending and the three Spidermen to meet so let's work backwards from there." The ending doesn't feel truly deserved because it was kind of forced to happen.

  • @Sauc3dog
    @Sauc3dog 2 роки тому +20

    Honestly dude. There's only so much an actor can do when they're beholden to the writers/producers of a movie. Im not trying to argue that its the writers or producers fault but theres more to play towards a critique of a movie than a critique of an actor. I honestly feel like will smith is a high end actor. Countless movies I've watched containing will smith have honestly been really good to watch. Personally though, maybe it might just be having watched movies with him in it as a youngling that my ability to critique his acting in a viable level was at a lower level then as an adult, but i dont feel like most actors/actresses are as responsible towards the movies acclaim as an actor rather than a writer/director. Not to mention the reach/demographic of a movie as well. Case in point. Hancock. When i first watched it as a teen i absolutely loved it, felling like the premise was amazing. Super heros, internal conflicts between what you want/what is right, or even trying to overcome your struggles were themes i resonated with as a teen, and though i can see more clearly now how that movie wasn't all that great, it just goes to show that movies that have a more specific demographic dont do well in the broader sense of movie critiques, but do well in those specific demographics. Its like saying Metallica isnt a good band because you dont hear them on pop based radio stations(which plays the top 100 songs of any year) its honestly heAvily disregarding towards their craftsmanship as artists and like such, it gives a clearer understanding towards how misjudged your video premise is. No offense. Be more understanding. Click bait videos are annoying. And maybe with a bit more consciousness you won't have to upload Garbage *fancy french accent* content and maybe more meaningful, in depth, and understanding towards your content. Not just one sided straight fact points. No one likes a power point of view.

    • @Sauc3dog
      @Sauc3dog 2 роки тому +8

      This is coming from someone who used to love your content but has come to see it might also lack understanding. For example this video premise comes to persuade will Smith as a poor actor by saying his movies flopped. Which is pretty short sighted. I hope you read this as a critique from love and understand that you( and all of us ) can be and do better

    • @annetteiroanya9883
      @annetteiroanya9883 2 роки тому +8

      Yeah honestly I was thinking the same thing. I thought it was kinda weird that the whole premise of the video was based on rotten tomato scores. Like that's the most accurate measure of a good/enjoyable movie lmao. Tbh this is the type of video I'd expect for him to post on his second channel, cuz it kinda feels....sloppy. I hate to sound hyper critical. But yeah that's the vibe I got watching this. Felt very shallow and judgmental, in an uninteresting way. Hope that makes sense.

  • @ytiger100
    @ytiger100 2 роки тому +7

    The example that I like to give to explain why rotten tomatoes is unreliable is to imagine a movie where every single critic gives it a score of 6/10. From me telling you that, you could conclude that it isn't a terrible movie but not a masterpiece. But since rotten tomatoes considers anything 6 and above as "fresh" it would give this hypothetical movie a 100%, which would give one the impression that it is a masterpiece. In other words, rotten tomatoes can reward mediocrity, while inventive movies that people either love or hate would get a score near 50. As far as review aggregates go, metacritic is much more valuable because it takes into account how positive/negative a review is.

      man must have overestimated his fans' loyalty to make such an obviously unpopular statement about a priceless piece of our heritage.

    If you are black than you grew up watching 'Secret Life Of Bees' and that movie is absolutely beautiful. I didn't know he produced it and I wouldn't have guessed he was capable of producing such a heartbreaking but yet beautiful movie ❤️
    20/10 would recommend you watching that movie

    Of course they're bad because the only actual good movie to ever exist is Morbius (2022) starring Jared Leto (God)

    9:21 I used to be sad because I didn't have any way to publicly show my interests in the form of a phone case, but, boy, did Nick have the solution for that. THANK YOU, NICK!
