  • Here are a few kernels of truth, wrapped liberally in extreme exaggeration. I know. It's pretty over the top. But so is the assertion that the bible is a holy book. That's a massive exaggeration. Most of it isn't even "pleasant". (Read on...)

The bible is revolting. It is sickening. It is nowhere NEAR as nice a book as what an ethical human could come up with, so why on earth does it have this reputation as having been written by the very author of love itself? It wasn't. It was written by human men - and pretty horrible men by the sounds of things.
And why is it that it only ever seems to be the ugly bits of the bible that are ever taken out of context? Why don't we ever hear christians complaining of John 3:16 being taken out of context?
Look, I know it's possible for things to be taken out of context. Creationists do it all the time, and it bugs the hell out of scientists and rationalists. Even I've been quoted out of context. Sure, it's annoying. But no context is large enough to write off some of the horrors of the bible. I mean - is September 11, for example, completely justified by recourse to a larger "context"? No, and neither are some of the horrors mentioned in the video.
I had a conversation recently (on youtube) and we talked about stoning. It occurred to me, that as an atheist, I will never, ever be called upon to defend the appalling practice of stoning. However, a christian who believes that their heavenly father mandated stoning, does have some kind of obligation to EXCUSE those who practiced stoning, and to even implicitly, DEFEND the practice, seeing, as it was, Yahweh's favored punishment.
THIS is what's wrong with christianity. And yes, I know that there is more to it than that. But how warped are your morals, compared to those of an atheist, if the atheist can outright condemn practices such as stoning and burning alive, but you can't, due to your apparent deep personal relationship with the supreme moral law giver of the universe? You know, that supreme moral law giver who said burning people alive was OK? Something is seriously wrong there.
Or, come out and say that the old testament laws were absolutely hideous! Come and join the rest of us. It's far clearer over here. No double-think. Come and live an ethical life based on what you TRULY believe about how best to live among others.

You might have a point Aymeric...
Except that people often cite "biblical values" when it comes to political issues including but not limited to: reproductive rights, environmental policy, immigration policy, gay rights, trans rights and so on and so forth.
This type of analysis undermines the foundation of the aforementioned form of rhetoric. I mean, I'm sure that stamp has no qualms with individual parishes acting charitably towards the greater community, but to suggest that charitable works have anything to do with "biblical values" is unfounded, as the analysis in this video illustrates.

The difference is that even with context the bible is still against certain things, like for example, fornication or homosexual acts. In these cases I could read you the whole bible chapter and the context won't change it. Every time I study scripture I take the whole chapter into account and don't cherrypick, both for good and bad things. Is taking things in context still somehow bad even when I'm not hypocritical about it like the strawman in the video?

And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time!

At the end of the Day a lot of Christians take the "good" verses out of Context too.
Context clarifies what a text means not what it says.
So this video is a bit flawed in that it is never explicitly stated what the guys on the right assumes the verses to mean. The guy on the left is only reacting to what he supposes the guys on the right thinks the verses mean... So I mean you can't blame the Christian guy for the critics lack of explicitly stated interpretation.

However, even if it was a rape fetus you couldn't abort it past a certain point of development unless your life was at risk.
Saying "completely legalize abortion" or "completely abolish abortion" are both extreme points of view and neither properly present a modern solution to the issue. My solution is intentionally lacking for the reader to fill in the blanks like the point of development, and to hopefully encourage the reader to present their own compromise idea (preferably better/more fleshed out/easy for either side of the extreme fence to agree upon.)

The rule that you can have only 1 abortion is ridiculous. If people can have a good reason to have an abortion once, than it is very likely that there are people that have that good reason twice.

It really says nothing at all about the actual existence of God or a higher being and so has nothing to do with the belief in God or the possibility of there being one. imkluu I'll tell you what I told her when she finished watching it, paraphrasing just a tad: "Let's say that there IS a 'god'; an omnipotent, omniscient, all-powerful one, at that. Would you worship, praise, adore, love, cherish or even respect a 'god' that would murder babies? BABIES? Forget innocent people that consciously did something bad with the right intentions--BABIES. Babies have about as much a conscience as a ROCK does. They don't know any better than to cry and whine when they're off, and to smile and laugh and make adorable faces when they're on [happy]. Any 'god' that could conscientiously kill BABIES isn't praise-worthy, or even recognizable as a god, and even if there is one, which I don't believe there is, I refuse to look at him as one. If you wanna believe in any being that could do what the characters in the bible say that this 'god' did, you can do so, but, that doesn't make him a 'god'. It makes him slime, assuming he exists."

I read the description, and it made an excellent point that I'd love to expand on.
"I had a conversation recently (on youtube) and we talked about stoning.
Something is seriously wrong there." - From the description.
The very act of Christians deliberately feeling the need to excuse things about their Bible and their faith shows that they know better than their supposed God. Take Christian apologetics, or any religious apologetics. The practice itself says, "We've grown beyond certain principles and practices, but some things in our religion are still totally passable." It shows incredible discernment not only to determine what religious principles no longer apply, but to determine, yourself, which things work. The fact that a person has it in them to shun old practices of their religion that they believe are bad and excuse them with the fact that some things align with their own innate sense of morality shows that they don't need the Bible to teach them morality whatsoever, and, if anything, it hinders societal progress, because instead of focusing on the crimes of this world that we could all do something to stop if we'd only stop looking upwards or get our noses out of our Bible, Christians spend their time doing mental gymnastics as they pore over their Bibles, expending mental and emotional energy, as well as time that could be put to better use, to make excuses for a God who's more archaic than His followers. It's sort of like having to put up with your dad if he's a drunk. Sure, he does and says a lot of deplorable things when he's wasted, but he says he loves us and sometimes, he's a real swell guy when he feels like it. It would be exhausting to be at the mercy of something like that, not knowing what dad- or God you're gonna be met with. Maybe, when you die, you'll catch him on a bad day, and he'll find some reason to justify condemning you just because that's the mood he's in. I'm sorry, but screw that.

When I was much younger I was religious and followed alot of the teachings here. Like I was 'all in' and didnt question it at all. I prayed one night and as a 'feel good' to myself I prayed to get affirmation that my own held beliefs were correct something along the lines of "what is your favorite people?".
I then went to bed like normal and didnt think about it at all. I then had a dream of talking to something which in my dream i had thought was god and he said "atheists." and i was just super confused in my dream so i was just like 'what?' and they replied "atheists are my favorite people as they work on bettering the world for no other reason than its the right thing to do. They better themselves and the things around them only bcuz its the right thing to do and not bcuz some book I have nothing to do with told them to. I wish for you to grow as a person and explore and learn about the universe I made for you." I then woke up in a massive sweat. I slowly fell away from the church after that.
Looking back it was likely my brain just trying to think more logically about a situation and parse the contradictions I held all equally true in my head. I dont believe in a god but if there is a god, they are not the god of the bible or any bible for that matter.

@@Mujoujinsoku they can in fact do that. I suggest reading about quantum physics or things like the two slits experiments. It just shows that the 'laws' of the universe are not as... 'finite' as we believe them to be. Also the idea that others laws may or may not exist also could be true.
Other universes exist and we have evidence of it. We however do not know if the same 'laws' that exist in our universe are the same in that universe as technically they do not have to. Gravity could be half the wave it is in other universe or just not be a thing at all.
Or a god could have created it, maybe. but honestly if you start reading about how everything fits together it doesnt make sense that a god set it up. just take the two slits experiment. run the test 100x and if observed it will be the same every time. If you then dont observe it and only plot the outcomes then its entirely different every time. So if god created these 'laws' then why do the laws... not work?
if you have time look up "DR. QUANTUM - DOUBLE SLIT EXPERIMENT" on youtube. if there was a god he would not have setup that garbage

Well considering atheism cannot exist without theism, this makes Isaac Asimov sort of a "Captain Obvious" now doesn't it? When we are born, we are neither theist, atheist, or agnostic, for we no nothing of deities to begin with. Once we are made aware, the mind of the individual is the only true force for atheism, and everything else. Sorry, Isaac, but I disagree with your philosophy.

Seriously, who came up with these definitions? If I was in charge, I'd say Atheism is what I said it was, and replace it with agnosticism for those who just want to see evidence. It would make much more sense and makes it simpler than saying strong/weak atheism and it actually puts agnosticism on the same plane. For the "middle-grounds" you could just combine the two terms with a hyphen *or*, even better, personally explain your beliefs so there's no confusion at all.
Eh, it is what it is I suppose.

How does atheism require theism to exist? Atheism predates theism, since people didn't believe anything before the creation of the first belief system. Atheism existed then just as it does now, and if all theistic religions/traditions vanished tonight, I would still be an atheist.

    • @greg77389
      @greg77389 10 років тому

      shaunpaulcroft
Depends on how you define things. A*theism, the root word is theism--essentially means "not theist". Atheism is typically defined as the lack in belief of deities. That is a very broad and not descriptive definition however. At what point do you consider the term "lacking" applicable? If I have anything less than full faith in God, does that make me an atheist? If there was no such thing as theism, the concept of a deity would not exist, therefore the concept of atheism would be rather meaningless. It's just a simple "one cannot exist without the other" case.
Here is the spectrum of belief in God, from complete atheist to complete theist:
      [Complete atheist]
      1) Does not believe God exists or is even possible to exist (equivalent to number 5 in magnitude)
      2) Does not believe in God, however acknowledges that he could exist (most atheists tend to fall here I think)
      3) No solid belief. Believes God may or may not exist but isn't sure (agnostic)
      4) Believes God exists but acknowledges that he may not (this is probably where I would be)
      5) Believes God exists and that there is absolutely no chance that he doesn't.
      [Complete theist]

Damn what I wouldn't give to have a conversation on biblical morality with my father that DIDN'T resemble this, a father who supposedly values integrity and character to a fault. The man is incredibly intelligent and fair in all other areas of his life, but when discrepancies like this are laid at his feet, he either dodges/excuses it like the theist in this video OR he finds ways to rationalize it like the theists in your other videos.
I'll share a brief story of talk we had recently. He has brought up, on nearly every holiday/family visit, that he is disgusted with current commercials and narratives spun by mainstream television these days, to the point that he claims to mute the TV during ad breaks, and somehow or other he ALWAYS circles around to detesting the current framing/eroding of the American family, specifically in the realm of promoting 'the gays as the acceptable/normal/right way'. It turns his stomach to see such things. Now, I'll say, fair enough, it's not for everyone and perhaps that is rather an abrasive affront to traditional sensibilities. Fine. But then, on my last stay, I challenged the point, using the 'God is THE perfect moral lawgiver, beginning to end, his morality is unchanging and just, and he made it clear that if a man lies with a man as with a woman, the two must be taken to the edge of the village and stoned to death'... and he ACTUALLY justified it via a mealy-mouthed shrug of (and I'm paraphrasing only slightly here) "Well... if God said DON'T DO IT, and he knew what was best, that such a thing could ruin a society, better that THAT happens than for the whole society to collapse.'
I thought I wanted consistency or honesty out of the man I call my father, but damn... be careful what you wish for. I did not argue that any further. I mean... I could have... but holy shit... how do you have a conversation about morality with a person who thinks the barbaric stoning of people for having sex in the wrong hole is the best and most justified course of punishment because all-knowing sky daddy said it's for the greater good? I mean I'm not gay, and personally, the act kinda turns my stomach too (and the stereotype of them is rather annoying, tbh), but it's none of my business, so go for it. I don't like broccoli or toffee either, but FFS... I wouldn't want people who like those things clubbed to death.

Atheism means that someone doesn't believe in the existence of a God or a being similar to that, saying that atheism is a religion is just as wrong as said oil is drinkable

@@kidkecleon again, atheism isn't a religion cause it doesn't believe in any deity or god, atheism basically means that it negates the existence of any God or deity, and that also applies to any entity related to that deity (The Devil for example), its sort of a doctrine, yes but not as much as a religious doctrine, an anyone can become an atheist

For every NSC video, every once in awhile I get skeptical about the claimed verse, and I look it up, and they are always even worse.

Spot-on! Pick any good verse out of the bible and it is fine with them. Pick out something not too nice and you're taking it out of context and cherry-picking.

Read the Bible with context, and become an atheist.
