Hey! I have iMac 21.5inch 2012 late and the CPU is Intel® Core™ i5-3330S and I want to upgrade this to a Core i7 New generation CPU is the work or configurable? Thanks
Hi @Max Tech, I really enjoy videos and your guidance overall. You had me convinced purchasing the 28 core 3175X and I am now waiting for my Mac Pro that is probably delayed.. So all this waiting time, has led me to explore what other people think about the compatibility. So far, I have encountered one on Mac Forum who says it is NOT compatible as it has too little PCI-E lanes and a different CPU id that is not the supported CPU ID's that are 50655, 50656 and 50567. So all in all, I have the 3175X here in front of me and I am no worried that it may not work after all. As I am waiting for my MAC I would offer to send mine to you for testing or would you perhaps be able to get one yourself and prove that it works? All the best Daniel :)!
Just wanted to point out, based on my research the x16 nvme card you listed is NOT compatible with the Mac Pro 2019 as it does not support bipurification. Correct me if I'm wrong but that's what my research has told me so I will not be buying that card.
What would be the price difference between an Apple-upgraded Mac Pro [max options] and if you purchased the min. spec and maxed it yourself? Would be interesting to see what the markup is on that. I'm guessing 20k-ish.
Dude, this is the first time I’ve ever commented on a UA-cam video... just had to let you know that I really appreciate your content. It is hands down the best Apple tech related channel I have come across. You guys are always so thorough and quick to put out actually meaningful benchmark/review videos when new products release, not just fancy slow mo shots with nothing substantive to say. Keep doing what you’re doing, I really loved this video. You guys are awesome!
*I will be able to afford this Mac Pro 13 years from now.* The first Mac Pro was released in 2006. They are now worth around $150 on eBay. So, in 2032, I will buy this Mac Pro (2019) for $150. I hope this makes everyone sleep better :-)
And there I was thinking I'd already settled on the 16" MBP. Which was fine, except I absolutely love the quiet fan and the promise of future upgradability at lower cost. What to do, what to do...
Amazing Video! Extremely informative. This is the information I was looking for. Keep them coming! I would love to see a full CPU upgrade video for those of us that would like to buy the base model and upgrade it over time.
Max, thank you for showing us what will fit and work in the new Mac Pro. Armed with this knowledge when "We are" able to buy one of these PCs. We'll know what will fit and work inside. (:
excellent video, very helpful. in maybe 3-4 months, you should consider reviewing a bunch of popular MPX and non-MPX parts that the Mac Pro guys start using.
The Radeon VII was discontinued by AMD several months ago. The 5700 XT is far more pragmatic option if you want graphical performance or any of the Radeon Pro cards if you want lots of VRAM.
What happens if you put the Radeon VII in when the Radeon 580X MPX module is still installed? Does the total GPU capacity become 24GB? The 8GB from the 580X and the 16GB from VII added together.
Hello, sorry for the naive question, I am aware that I still have to learn a lot on this new mac pro. In short, are there cheapest monitors that can work with this Mac Pro and a basic graphic card ? In other word, is there any way to avoid buying the recommended expensive Pro display XDR?
I'm being told the ASUS Hyper M.2 M.2 SSD 16x Adapter you linked above does NOT support 2019 Mac Pro - can you confirm it works? My question and response from the vendor you linked are here: Q: Will this work in the 2019 mac pro? and if yes, will it use virtual raid on cpu (intel® vroc) or apple raid? A: NO By Python on December 23, 2019
Definitely dose not support PCI-e bifurcation. For 1 there is no need with the amount of PCIe resource it has. 2 that is dependent on the Motherboard manufacture to add the feature. If you added a Asus Hyper 16 M.2 I believe you would only see the first drive as there isn't anything to tell the PCIe slot to use 4x 4x 4x 4x. Only PCIe M.2 cards that have more then 1 drive would need a PLX chip on it. Those tend to be more expensive cards. OWC Accelsior 4M2 or Amfeltec Squid for example.
Hello Max and thanks for your video, about the W-3175X, will it work only with 2666 or also the 2900 RAM ? and if not, is the computer running really slower with that lower memory speed ? Also I've noticed this processor is 38Mo cache versus 64 for the Apple version (with 28 cores too), what cache amount does affect on computer performance ? Thanks a lot :)
Dude, it looked like you had the Radeon VII in the x8 slot instead of an x16 @12:21 according to the PCI Expansion Slot Utility that's what the PCIe slot next to the Slot 1 MPX module is, that could explain your scores EDIT: scratch that, someone pointed out to me that that was the PSU that I thought was the MPX module

Hi Max, great stuff as usual. When will you be comparing the Vega II and the Radeon VII s? Im really looking forward to that video since im thinking of getting a Mac Pro and cant decide if I should get the VEGA II or 2 Radeon VII for Resolve together with the base 580x for GUI. Thanks for the great videos
Hi i need an urgent help here, I’m planing of getting the MacBook Pro 16 inch and I’m in two minds about this. Should I upgrade the Ram to 32GB or GPu to 8Gb. If you have to choose one out of these, which would it be your firer and most priority especially in Final Cut Pro x . Thanks
Dear Max The product you recommend "ASUS HYPER M.2 X16 CARDV2" is not compatible to 2019 Mac Pro I follow your description to buy this, but it's NOT working... ONLY this card. the other youtuber also said this. I suggest you remove from your description. :)
Already have a Mac Pro2019 16core and I am so satisfied with that machine that I am considering buying one or two additional for a serious 3D - render farm. Had a look at PC builds with 64 or 128 core Ryzens from Titan Computers. But just imagining WIN as an operating system spoiling my daily workflow and client work, makes me prefer paying significantly more for the Macs, like buying the "cheapest" Mac Pro and upgrading it with the biggest possible CPU. Anyone here knows what are the most cores at the moment in a Xeon that fits in a MacPro 2019?
Question - What is the quality of RAM Apple sells in the stock machine vs. what you get on Amazon? My friend says the Apple RAM is better quality and shouldn't purchase from Amazon.
Just find a trusted source and one with good reviews. Apple doesn't actually make the ram, it comes from a different vendors such as Samsung although I'm not sure who Apple actually uses.
Hi, I am just going to buy base Mac Pro 2019 and planning to swap with W3175X as you said but some are telling me it won't work. It will only boot but said it will not work. Is it true ? Or will it work ? Sorry to bother you man, really appreciate your time.
Hey mate did you finally try with the 3175x? I'm looking for a Mac Pro and since this chipset is now sold for 600$, it seems a good deal but I've stumbled across some online forums that say it doesn't work
It's hardware acceleration for video encoding etc. It lets you stream multiple super high resolution, RAW video feeds all at the same time in real time. You could have say 4 x 8K RED RAW files playing at the same time in your timeline with no buffering or having to use proxy footage as you'd often have to do with working with such high quality files.
I think you should be able to upgrade to Xeon W-3275M as well, which is 28 cores and turbos to 4.4GHz and supports up to 2TB of ram, and the socket is the same as that of W-3175 which is FCLGA3647.
Very informative video, thanks! And that GPU comparison is like a perfect cliffhanger for a geek! :D the most intriguing part is how baseline 580X + off the shelf GPU will drive 6K display through TB on the back compared to with Vega 2 MPX 😬
Hey Max! Love your videos. Are you able to run both graphic cards at the same time? Will macos know that there are two currently installed? I am planning on just getting the 580x from apple then picking up something else you have listed. Thanks!
Can we upgrade Mac Pro 2019 with the new *2.3 GHz 64-core* 3990X AMD Rryzen CPU for $3,990 dollars instead of the old *2.5 GHz 28‑core* Intel Xeon W processor for $7,000? We can save $3,010.
Some constructive criticism, I was trying to follow carefully your Belkin cable section. But there are no close ups, only a wide shot of you holding two cables, you don't show the cable clip itself close or even a mid shot and then after connecting you cut immediately away from your hand close up to the apple website so we don't get to see the final cables connected. These directions for this part are confusing and not clear to the viewer. I appreciate the vid but for someone who hasn't used these cables before its frustrating.
What’s the best graphics card I can buy for speeding up after effects renders and previews? Also premiere exports and playback. I don’t game at all. Just looking for faster renders etc. thanks! Price doesn’t mater.
Quick question - I'm seeing newer versions out now (6.22.20) of the Radeon RX 5700 XT - are they all compatible or are certain brands preferable? Great video, btw.
The EU required us to design the case so that it forces you to remove every single cable every time you want to open it. I suggested making a North America version that would not require this, but they wouldn't go for it.
I believe you can also install macOS to one of those M.2 drives in the PCIe adapter and use faster drives (not to mention larger) then what the Mac Pro comes with.
For now at least. Linus (Tech Tips) has the very convincing theory that once their complete lineup uses the T2 chips (only one older Mac is missing) Apple will most likely completely remove the ability to download MacOS, probably to kill Hackintoshes. There's no other theory why the T2 is so oversecure that it doesn't even allow user upgrades.
love this video. I bought the 28 core on Amazon for USD 2950 and 192 GB ram from Nexmix (also from Amazon). Installed it and it worked perfectly! Thinking about buying a second base Mac Pro . One for my office and one at work.
Hi there. Looking at putting in the 24 core W-3265M in place of the current 16 Core. How has your replacement held up? What thermal paste did you end up using? Really don’t want to mess things up. Thx!
Hey dude, thanks for the video. Im editing a ton of 4.5k red raw files on FCPX with my base iMacPro... Im running an external screen as well. My 2 questions are this: 1) Can you run 2x XDR displays + 1x 4k display with the Vega pro ll 32gb? Or is the Duo the only option? 2) Would you go higher on the CPU cores or bump up to the GPU from Vega pro ll 32gb to the due? I price vs performance was the only option?
Could you please open up the thing you said about 6K not supported? I'm currently upgrading my Mac Pro 2019, and it's urgent. My display is Pro Display XDR.
Has this👇 card you recommend been tested with multiple SSDs plugged into it? There are reports it works with one but I have not seen it will work with many. I’ve read that motherboard support is required. And this is yet to be confirmed on the Mac Pro. ASUS Hyper M.2 X16 PCIe 3.0 X4 Expansion Card V2 Supports 4 NVMe M.2
So you are saying... keep the MPX580X installed for higher Thunderbolt port resolution, and then can I add a different AMD Graphics card to run faster for DaVinci Resolve? Which one is best? Thanks for the video, great info.
Google 'Lunar Studios Jumanji animation'. It's the best demo I've seen so far of the capabilities of the MP in a real world situation at a top animation studio.
The base model 580X in my Mac Pro does 43K in GB5 Metal, so its seems like the 5700XT isnt any better than that? How I wish I could put my RTX 2070 Super in there - it does ~95K...
I’d love to know if you can put a couple of 2080ti’s (using sli/nvl.... I am not sure what they call it with the new rtx cards... but where they combine two card into one memory block for GPU rendering) and run them under bootcamp... that would be cool.... hell of a lot cheaper to just use a PC I know but the idea of having a pretty fast PC and a blazing fast mac each with their own strengths in one machine would be pretty cool.
Hi I’m rebooting up on my 2019 Mac Pro tower from external. That all works great but I want to clone that drive to the internal drive that the mac comes with. Problem is when I boot up from external the internal mac drive doesn’t show on desktop. I see all other drives. So when I go to my cloning program I can’t select the internal mac drive to clone to. Why is this? Is there a fix?
Would I be right in thinking that if I got a machine with the base graphic card and then added -two-Radeon VII cards, I would be getting better graphics performance than getting the machine with the single Vega II card for about half the money of that card?
Hello Max Tech, i bought the same SSD controler than you but i have this message : " The pci cards installed are not available according to the optimal configuration " I used the number 6 PCI. I tryed different PCI Thanks
That’s very comprehensive! I didn’t expect the Radeon drivers to be so poorly optimized in macOS. Why not test out Boot Camp and especially the gaming and productivity performance of Vega II in Windows?
Nice guide m8, do you plan to test this machine on bootcamp ? I'm interested in Mac Pro but I will definitely need dual boot so that I can game on windows and work on mac.
Are you sure about the cpu upgrade ? I read that the T2 ship limits the cpus you can install. And that you have to deactivate SIP for it. Do you confirm ?
Max Tech. The reason why de XT is scoring lower in Metal benchmarks is because Navi was not created for Computing Power. The Vega cards have higher Computing power. Navi is better in games and Vega is better in Computing calculations. This is why the Navi card scores lower than the Vega
Oh I absolutely understand why the 5700XT is scoring like that but for that same reason you listed the Radeon VII should be scoring much higher since it has 64 compute cores instead of 40 but our Metal scores are almost the same..
@@MaxTechOfficial O now I understand. Sorry for the misconception. I understood in your video that you didn't understand it. Sorry. Didn't want to be rude. I can't answer that question tbh sorry
Nice Max thank you so much great information I think I'm going to wait about a year or so to get this computer let things calm down a little bit lol thanks
Hey Max - i just got the macpro and it seems the 4-slot ASUS m.2 Adapter that you mentioned is not supported on the macpro since the motherboard does not have bifurcation. - so it can only support one ssd at a time, even if there are four slots Maybe you can point to who said it should work, maybe iam just doing something wrong ..? inserting the card with one ssd botted fine and it showed the storage, but with two ssds installed the system booted but showed none of the two ssds, and even didnt recognize the pcie card at all.
Can't really find any information online about PCI-e bifurcation support on Mac Pro 2019 (especially officially). I'm sure it should have supported, but will it compatible with existing 4x NVMe cards? Not a good idea to say it in the video if you cannot verify.
Ouzala VanMeWe If they dont make an effort to let that happen, why should it run slower? MacOS supports all AMD drivers. As long as no other component wont bottleneck the gpu everything is in check

Thanks!
can't wait till you test the XDR display.
Can we upgrade Mac Pro 2019 with the new *2.3 GHz 64-core* 3990X AMD Rryzen CPU for $3,990 dollars instead of the old
*2.5 GHz 28‑core* Intel Xeon W processor for $7,000? We can save $3,010.
Of course not. It uses an Intel motherboard with an Intel socket. CPUs with only a specific socket are supported. -Vadim
You should run every game at ease with these specs right? I didn’t hear you talk about games performance
would be nice if these Macs where modular and plug and play like the old Mac pros to expensive and to limited
He did it again! Great review.
love this video.
Thx!
@max tech did you really upgrade to that processor? The people at MacRumors is saying the 3175X is not compatible...
Hey dude, thanks for the video. Im editing a ton of 4.5k red raw files on FCPX with my base iMacPro... Im running an external screen as well. My 2 questions are this:
1) Can you run 2x XDR displays + 1x 4k display with the Vega pro ll 32gb? Or is the Duo the only option?
2) Would you go higher on the CPU cores or bump up to the GPU from Vega pro ll 32gb to the due? I price vs performance was the only option?
Could you please open up the thing you said about 6K not supported? I'm currently upgrading my Mac Pro 2019, and it's urgent. My display is Pro Display XDR.
If your gonna upgrade it buy a Xeon phi 7210, $100 on eBay, 64cores but slower clock speeds
Yes of course! We recommend them in the video. Radeon 7 is great for 16GB of ram.
Fantastic. What we would also like to see is motion picture extreme hi-end 3d rendering in real time which the machine is built for (not benchmarks).
I can also confirm that my Asus Strix 2080Ti works perfectly fine (under BootCamp) ;-)
dam_j Do you see any performance loss? Thanks for confirm it works.
I just run a simple round of PUBG in 4K / Ultra Settings and it feels exactly like on my gaming Maschine with an Intel i7 8086 (6x 5GHz) !
dam_j Woah, that’s awesome. Thanks!
I tested myself that one 2080Ti is no problem and works perfect under BootCamp ! Sadly i have only one so i can´t test NVLink...
If the software you are using can utilize both graphics cards properly then yes!
@@MaxTechOfficial Would that include Premiere and Resolve?
Hello Max Tech, i bought the same SSD controler than you but i have this message : " The pci cards installed are not available according to the optimal configuration "
I used the number 6 PCI. I tryed different PCI
Thanks
where did you purchase your 12 core processor from for the 2019 Mac Pro
That’s very comprehensive! I didn’t expect the Radeon drivers to be so poorly optimized in macOS. Why not test out Boot Camp and especially the gaming and productivity performance of Vega II in Windows?
We will!
Nice guide m8, do you plan to test this machine on bootcamp ? I'm interested in Mac Pro but I will definitely need dual boot so that I can game on windows and work on mac.
Just installed windows 10 with bootcamp last night. Everything went perfectly smooth!
Hey, do you have any suggestions on how much "CORE" you will need to comfortably run a Protools HDX system.??
Brother when i Updated my ssd and i fix it , my ssd is not showing and detected in mac pro , Can you tell me Whats problem with that.??
Can’t you just take the base model and spec it up to full for like, half the price?
Yes :)
Excellent tutorial!
Great video you just earn a subscriber! 💪🏿✊🏿
Where Can I buy the cable kit you use in the video ? I need the sata cables
Quick question.. You can opt for the 256ssd and add nvme cards.. But, can you run macos from the nvme cards and opt to not use the ssd?
Are you sure about the cpu upgrade ? I read that the T2 ship limits the cpus you can install. And that you have to deactivate SIP for it.
Do you confirm ?
I'd like to know this as well
It’s pretty much 100% confirmed by multiple sources.
Christian Roman - confirmed that it is possible or confirmed that it is not possible?
Did you get a boot screen with AMD cards?
I can't answer that question tbh sorry
isn't the $3000 28-core processor with lower memory speed and higher GHz?
Dear Sir,
Could you pleases do a video on installing windows 10 or ubuntu on Mac Pro 2019
Why would anyone buy mac pro to install window 10?🤔
I have a hackintosh with dual radeon VII
Nice Max thank you so much great information I think I'm going to wait about a year or so to get this computer let things calm down a little bit lol thanks
Very informative. Thank you
Hey Max - i just got the macpro and it seems the 4-slot ASUS m.2 Adapter that you mentioned is not supported on the macpro since the motherboard does not have bifurcation. - so it can only support one ssd at a time, even if there are four slots
Maybe you can point to who said it should work, maybe iam just doing something wrong ..?
inserting the card with one ssd botted fine and it showed the storage, but with two ssds installed the system booted but showed none of the two ssds, and even didnt recognize the pcie card at all.
can we do the same with recent parts?
Have you tried the asus 4 nvme ssd adapter in your description? Does it work?
Do you need power cables for installation your own Gpu.
Can't really find any information online about PCI-e bifurcation support on Mac Pro 2019 (especially officially).
I'm sure it should have supported, but will it compatible with existing 4x NVMe cards?
Not a good idea to say it in the video if you cannot verify.
Yes we showed it off in the video.
@@MaxTechOfficial Looking forward to it! Great videos none the less :D
4 years down the line the 28 core is still expensive af on the aftermarket
Hi,
It is possible to put any AMD GPU on the Mac Pro ? Without limitation ? I read that we lose the 3d acceleration
Thanks
Ouzala VanMeWe If they dont make an effort to let that happen, why should it run slower? MacOS supports all AMD drivers. As long as no other component wont bottleneck the gpu everything is in check
@@gamenikhd2001 Thanks
I purchased exactly the items listed to add SSD space to my Mac Pro and my Mac says the drive is not readable by this computer
Can you mix graphics cards? Like a 5700 with a Radeon 7? (:
