Hey! A Gorillaz fan here! Gorillaz are a British virtual band created by Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, the animated members are 2D who's the singer, Murdoc who's the bassist, Noodle who's the guitarist and Russel who's the drummer. Gorillaz are a multi-genre band and they tend to mix genres a lot. This song is part of their TV series styled album, this being Season one which comes out on the 23rd of October! You should check out some of their hits like Feel Good Inc and Clint Eastwood!

"Feel good inc." and "Clint eastwood" are usually the first songs that most people hear from gorillaz but here's the thing they don't stick to one genre nothing really can categorize gorilaz. So "feel good inc.", "clint eastwood", and "the pink phantom" are vastly different from eachother now here's a list of suggestions you should hear.
    Feel good inc.
    Clint eastwood

A good place to start with the Gorillaz is the song "Clint Eastwood." Probably their most well-known, with Del the Funky Homosapien as featured rapper.
And if you've never heard of Del the Funky Homosapien, I highly suggest the song "Mistadobablina."

This was such a beautiful reaction bruh lmao. I can tell that in some way it reached deep. Thats one thing about the Gorillaz: They have such a range in sound that they can make a song that makes you feel on top of the world, one that makes you resonate and reflect on your lows in life, and one that's just a straight "feel good" vibe. Shit they can even work all those emotions into one song as you can see lmao..
id like to see you react to "Humility", "Aries", and "Pac-Man' by them. Those three give a good idea of the three main styles they have in their songs :)

It’s hard to fathom there are people that are still brand new to Gorillaz in this day. Yea don’t feel bad is you’re confused if this is your first song. Gorillaz has a huge lore with lots of experimental sounds. To which us, the fans, love.

Obviously everyone's gonna suggest Clint Eastwood and Feel Good, their most popular songs.
So that you know what the band is about, all the characters are cartoons. 2D is the blue haired singer that you see here who has a horrible voice-cracking talking voice when he's not singing due to car accidents he was in from Murdoc (2D's voiced by Damon), Murdoc is the green-skinned bassist that you see in the background of the video at times (and self proclaimed leader of the group) who's always getting into bad deals and stuff, Noodle is the super-soldier asian girl guitarist who's got a Zen Bond with 2D, and Russel's the American drummer of the group who used to be inhabited by a rapping ghost that he'd acquired from the souls of his peeps inhabiting him after they were killed in a shootout.
Their first album was Clint Eastwood. After that the band broke up, but Noodle ended up returning to Kong Studio (their old studio, they have a new Kong Studio in these videos) after finding out about her origins and killed the zombies that had infested the place in the band's absence before getting the band back together for their second album Demon Days. Throughout some of the videos of that album some story starts to pop up in them with Feel Good Inc. leading into the final video El Manana where Noodle is either killed or flees to safety offscreen (it's unknown which happened since Murdoc was the one recalling the events both times they were asked, and he is not at all a good source of information. If she died he rescued her from hell since he's into mystical stuff and is a satanist).
The band splits up after that due to the loss of Noodle, but years later Murdoc shows up to kidnap 2D (again (that's how he got him into the band in the first place)). Murdoc's also created a Cyborg Noodle from DNA he got from the wreckage of the windmill from El Manana which acts as his bodyguard and looks like Noodle did during Demon Days (the band actually ages over the course of the albums with their ages staying consistent with the years the albums are released. Noodle's the main one you see that from though since she starts out as a 13-year-old that mailed herself to the band in a box during Clint Eastwood and is now 29 (turns 30 in 2 days on Halloween).
Over the course of that album (Plastic Beach) Murdoc and 2D are being pursued by a character called The Boogeyman (who's implied to be one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse in Rhinestone Eyes), and is after them due to Murdoc (as always) not making good on a deal he made with him years back (I think it was selling his soul to make the band famous or something). In Melancholy Hill it turns out Noodle's alive and escapes a ship that's under attack by pirates in planes (that I think Murdoc had partnered up with between Demon Days and Plastic Beach) after killing one of them. While Cyborg Noodle, Murdoc, and 2D are going to Plastic Beach in a submarine (Plastic Beach is an island made of trash that Murdoc hopes will be a sanctuary for him from all the bad deals he's made over the years), Russel (now a giant due to swimming through chemicals on his way to Plastic Beach, runs into Noodle. It all culminates in a showdown on Plastic Beach in the video for Rhinestone Eyes (which unfortunately they didn't have time or money or something to make a full-fledged video out of so it's all in storyboards) where The Boogeyman attacks the island with undead pirates and stuff until Noodle and Russel arrive to help out.
After that it hasn't been nearly as plot heavy. Humanz had Murdoc making some shady deal at a club they go to in one of the videos and winds up in jail finally during The Now Now (where he's replaced by Ace from The Gang Green Gang (yes, from Powerpuff Girls)). Noodle goes on a mission to kill a demon that Murdoc tells her about believing that it's influence has caused 2D to change and become more arrogant and stuff, but it turns out he's just like that due to Murdoc not being around to abuse him anymore.
Finally we're at the Song Machine now where they've been putting out a new video almost every month. They're in a new Kong Studio and the most that's really happened plot-wise is in the video Desole Noodle, 2D, and Russel go off to have fun without Murdoc using the strange abilities of their new studio that opens portals to other parts of the world. Murdoc is seen crying towards the end once he realizes they're having fun without him, and then in the following video it's mainly just 2D and Murdoc on a bike with Noodle chasing after them halfway through. At the end of that Murdoc takes out a needle to inject 2D with truth serum to find out how the portals work and a picture that was released following that shows Noodle having to hold Russel back from beating Murdoc up (he beat him up once before Clint Eastwood when he found Murdoc having sex with 2D's old girlfriend and broke Murdoc's nose which is why it looks all busted up). In Pac Man Murdoc's in some closet-area that he's converted into an Argon Harvesting Unit (Magical Energy Collecting device) while the band suffers strange effects from a mystical arcade machine he bought and that 2D plays. In Strange Timez they go to the moon, and then in this one...well...you saw this one.
They were sort of made as a way for artists to get together and collaborate as most of their library is songs where they collaborate with people. But that should give you a rundown on everything.
I'd suggest pretty much any of their videos, but mainly:
    Clint Eastwood
    Dare
    Feel Good Inc.
    El Manana
    Stylo
    Melancholy Hill
    Rhinestone Eyes
    Humility
    Saturnz Barz
    Strobelite
And any of the songs from The Song Machine (this new stuff)

Gorillaz are chilling chaos. Music genre? Yes. But i love everything with singer Damon Albarn. He is also lead sing of the band "Blur" and "
The Good, the Bad & the Queen". They normally have some rap in their songs. I like their creativity.

I like this Gorillaz track, but I’m inclined to agree with you that this might not have been the track of theirs that I would’ve started with? All that is to say, if you might like to try another Gorillaz track, you might go with “Feel Good, Inc.”
Also, if it may help, this snippet from Wikipedia offers some background on the band:
“Gorillaz are a British virtual band created in 1998 by musician Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett. The band primarily consists of four animated members: Stuart ‘2-D’ Pot, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle, and Russel Hobbs. Their fictional universe is presented in music videos, interviews and short cartoons. In reality, Albarn is the only permanent musical contributor, and Gorillaz’ music often features collaborations with a wide range of featured artists.”

You got thrown onto the deep end here for sure. This is one of my favorites of theirs-- always makes me tear up. What I gather is that it's about the passing away of an unrequited love. Given the imagery of the Phantom V automobile, I think it's about John Lennon, who famously gave his away. Elton and Lennon spent some time together one summer, which Elton described like a wild love affair, but I don't think it likely that there were any romantic thoughts on Lennon's end, since Elton was gay, and Lennon wasn't. So Elton was close, happy, and dearly in love with someone who could never love him back-- someone who later died suddenly and tragically, never being aware of the love Elton had carried in his heart. There has been no acknowledgment that this is what the song is about, but it all fits. Maybe Elton chose not to make any of it explicit-- this is his art, his emotion, coming from a personal and private space inside him, and the subject of it being a famous person isn't entirely the point.

  • @Ocrilat

Been an Elton John fan since I was a kid...love that he still collaborates with other talented musicians like this. For anyone who doesn't know, Elton is 74 years old, still tours, still makes records, and has 57 U.S. Top 40 hits to his name, and 69 UK Top 40 hits. His first album was released in 1969. I know a lot of younger people might not know who he is. You should.

The hand-candle looks like something from European folklore called a "Hand of Glory." The idea was that if you took the pickled left hand from a hung criminal and fashioned a candle from it and the dead man's fat, it hand the power to immobilize people when it was lit. Thieves thought that if they lit a Hand of Glory while robbing a house, they wouldn't be discovered.

Can't really place Gorillaz in a genre. They've done so much since their inception that trying to fit them inside a box is virtually impossible. Best to start at the beginning and then make your way here. Clint Eastwood is usually the starting point as it was one of the first MVs to actually gain air time.
19--2000 and Tomorrow Comes Today are from the same album.
Feel Good Inc. is from their second album and attached to that song is El Manana. Personal favorite on the album is Kids with Guns.
Melancholy Hill and Rhinestone Eyes are on Plastic Beach.
Though not a lot of people really talk about this album but, Revolving Doors and Amarillo are on The Fall.
There is a video for Saturnz Barz and Strobelite for the album Humanz.
Humility and Tranz are on The Now Now. Personal favorite on that album is Fireflies.
Finally with the Song Machine Album there are videos for every song out thus far. I would suggest following the episodes in order. This album actually releases in 2 days.
