Hey girlie! I have a few tips from one 4C girlie to another that I’ve learned through trial and error, from my sister who has waist length 4C hair, and also from Anthony Dickey’s infamous wash and go method. First off, if your hair isn’t dripping down your shirt, it’s not ready to be styled! Our hair has to be SOPPING WET AND HANGING. If your hair is wet but going upward and shrunken like an Afro, it’s not hydrated enough. Water hydrates and also starts the curl process. Wet your hair until it is HANGING. Conditioner is our bestie! Conditioner will REVEAL your curl pattern. Use LOTS of it. Don’t be shy lol 4C is naturally the driest hair texture and needs conditioner on a regular basis. It also provides weight to the hair allowing the curls to stretch, helping it to hang more. If your hair isn’t hanging and defined AF when you add conditioner, you’re not using enough! When you wash out any product, ALWAYS wash downward. And again, your hair needs to be sopping wet and hanging when the conditioner is washed out. Your curls should now be POPPING! Immediately add your styler. Don’t give your hair a chance to start drying and shrinking. The role of your styler is to CAPTURE your curl pattern that the conditioner revealed, and this is the best time to do it. Staying in the shower and applying your styler is your best bet! It also allows you to re-wet your hair if you need to. Once you’re done applying your styler, shake your head to separate your curls and DO NOT TOUCH YOUR HAIR UNTIL IT IS COMPLETELY DRY. Touching it while it’s drying causes frizz and disrupts the curls. You can pick it, fluff it and whatever else you want to do to it to your heart’s content once it’s dry. Using a styler (gel, cream, mousse, etc) to reveal your curl pattern is not the way to go for our hair type. It’s time consuming and rarely gives the best results. It also requires a bit of manipulation such as having to manually coil, etc. to get a uniform, desired result. If you try these tips, I’d love to see the results. I hope this helps!

Wow, thanks Vanessa, this was a lot of useful tips. Some of which I’ve heard before especially styling in the shower with DRENCHED Hair. I will try the other methods. Thanks for sharing. 🫶🏾

I’m confused you said immediately apply your styler, then you said using a styler to reveal our type of curl pattern won’t work. Did you mean using those products you mentioned? Or what have you used to get more defined results?

@@lexxie225 Your definition will come from your conditioner. Your conditioner is what reveals your curl pattern. Your styler (gel, mousse, butter, etc) will set the definition you got from your conditioner, so make sure your curls look the way you want before you set them. How it looks when it’s wet is how it will set and dry.

No problem! You should certainly try the mousse, I coil the hair at the ends as to not have the curls too tight. ☺️

Thank you so much! ☺️ Yes, I use the Camille Rose Honey hydrate because it’s a good (humectant) leave-in conditioner for low porosity hair then Jamaican black castor oil on the scalp.

Thank you so much, you’d have to soak your hair then apply the mousse. It should give you optimal results.
