The live 1993 version has Maynard using his voice and his whole body to illustrate the lyrics in such a powerful way, it's well worth a watch.

@@balakrishnanlakshmanan9852 You are just a person struggling to just BE in this world, you must find compassion for yourself and no hatred. My beloved only son died from alcoholism 7 years ago at the age of 31 and I miss him so every day. Those of us who love him so deeply tried with all we had to show him he was worthy and of value not for any accomplishments or achievements but just because he was a person, an ensouled being here on a journey as we all are. He AND you are as deserving of love and mercy and peace as any other human; I only wish the tortured thoughts in my son's head could have left him and enabled him to see how priceless he was, what a treasure. I see you, and I wish you peace here in this troubled world because your true soul is immaculate.

"I will find the center in you, I will chew it up and leave. Trust me, trust me, trust me...." The best take I've heard on that part is that it is the substance itself speaking. It destroys you from the inside out, and all the while you believe that you cannot survive without it. You trust it instead of those trying desperately to help you. As you say, so many ways to interpret, find meaning. Great reaction, gentlemen. Looking forward to more.

    • @ShootinMonky

It can be interpreted in so many ways.. it's incredible.. for me it also hits with my depressions and the person in me treating me like this.

    • @Hoganply
      @Hoganply 6 місяців тому +3

I interpret it as that secondarily. Primarily, I hear it speaking to the type of person a user becomes; first of substances, then of people. First, one might use it to seperate themselves or hide from the world in some sense, but its desctruction can't be contained, and try as you might its effects on more than one innocent person will out, be they yourself or anyone around you. The death of even one innocent person's potential is bad enough, but what their loved ones go through makes addiction a problem on another level.

The groove is definetly more accessible than alot of their other stuff which made it more radio/TV friendly but the sauce is all there. Maynard's voice is what does it for me the most. Ahh Love you guys! This particular track is actually not even one of my favorites, and yet is so classically Tool, such a masterwork from 30 years ago, that it's a distinct pleasure to watch you hear it for the first time. So...let me just focus on why I love checking out your reactions:
De: ...I think any time someone is drawn to fall on their knees, to speak to something bigger than their circumstances, bigger than their now... Who do you talk to that's bigger than your mind?
Dre: They broke it down to draw you in...to the story a little bit more. ... and just making it easy for you to follow along with it and catch on to the message and make it become whatever you need it to become. You feel it, no matter how your interpretation goes.
You guys have amazing insight. Like I said, I've been a Tool fan for 30 years now, but I love listening to you because you capture the same vibe but in a totally different but totally right on kind of way. Love it. Keep it up! ❤

@@De.Dre.Universe I hear you- and I really like that "Many names, one title, God." Good way to put it. The voice of that...force or spirit, "God"... can come in very softly when I'm alone and writing or even day dreaming, but it also can crash over me like an ocean wave when there is some powerful form of art - like some excellent music that speaks to what I feel. Better believe I have felt that *something* when standing in the midst of several thousand strangers all lost and together inside a Tool concert! Course I was smoked out, with headphones on, blastin in Miami in my appt thinkin my homies ain't ever gonna get this and that's a damn shame. What a difference a couple of decades make. But just so we're clear the 90's produced the best music in all genres from rap/hip hop, alternative, rock and you name it. Love my generation! The creativity, the innovativness, the originality. They all bled thru their music. That's why there will never be another Tool, or another Tupac, or another Kurt Cobaine, or Pearl Jam, or Wu Tang and I could go on and on.

I really enjoy your analysis of the musical and lyrical content. I loved the analogy of the pre chorus and chorus to a prayer. Especially in the 2nd chorus you can hear the emotion in the “Why”, it’s almost as if he’s begging for an answer. I hope your channel continues to grow. Everybody can interpret the lyrics for themselves, which is part of the beauty of music. I myself, feel the 2nd verse can be seen as words coming from the addict themself, or from the personified point of view of the drug itself.

I like how when Maynard sings : "Why can't we not be sober" as a double negative its true to the lack of perspective and self doubt one has when in the midst of addiction or being lost in life generally. Deep down a person knows they CAN be sober or have mental clarity but they convince themselves otherwise.

Tremendous take to recognize that it is not necessarily about substance abuse only but rather it includes ALL of the patterns and behaviors that we engage in that undermine us and disservice us. In an automatic way we can coast on these ideas or subconscious thoughts and be none the wiser but otherwise recognize that life just isn't right. I have many self sabotaging behaviors of my own and this song was a mirror in my own face, like, damn I am my own serpent. I wish i could start again and wipe the patterns and the knowledge of the patterns (and their outcomes that i seem to desire so much) away.

These lyrics were written for the bands bassist at the time, Paul D’Amour who wanted to be wasted to write. Basically got his swan song, then was ousted and replaced with Justin Chancellor.
Just in time for one of their greatest albums, Ænima. Justin has been absolutely incredible for Tool since 1996ish?

This is Tool at some of their most stripped down and back-to-basics.
Love seeing your stuff. I have a childhood friend who got me into Tool in like 6th grade (I want to say like 1997 or 98). He says that their shows are an absolute experience.
    Haven’t gone… yet.
That said, if you like Tool for their lyrics, I would recommend The Mountain Goats.
No Children is their most iconic song. The Moral Orel version is great.
Cry for Judas is an incredibly human song.
This Year is an anthem to teenage angst in a broken home.
Dance Music is the most relatable “I grew up in a messed up house” track I’ve ever heard.
Plus, the Mountain Goats are great live. I openly wept in public.
And yes, Tool is excellent crying music.
I love seeing y’all discover new shit.
    Peace ❤️

This song was a wake up call from the lead singer to a band member who was having drug use problems.

Love it. I am Zepplin fan and love their remake of NO quarter. Powerful lyrics in this one too.
Perfect Cirle Judith is amazin with sexiest bass guitar move I have ever seen by a woman. Wonder if you will catch it and see it. Maynard kills it lyrically in this side project of all stars.

It’s a joy to see people expand themselves and be open to new things. Thank you for sharing your experience of finding Tool, one of my favorite bands of all time!
Seeing them live is next level stimulation (stage, music, visuals, lyrics….insane experience) and as an earlier commenter noted, Maynard’s stage performance, particularly earlier tool (1990’s) was like a metaphor for the music (serpentine-like gyrations, or leaning way back like on a precipice while singing) just awesome!
Sober-my interpretation is he is calling out God for a lack of presence, God is only the historical narrative (won’t you whistle something BUT the past and time, no substance, and he is asking why can’t “we” be sober and move on from the addiction of religion. My take. 🤷‍♂️
    Thank you again! 👍😃
