    I love Megasquirt how-to videos and your channel is awesome, so this is pretty great. As someone who is in the process of getting a new Miata to put all my turbo parts on, these videos are extremely helpful. I demand more.

    Watched a driving 4 answers vide on boost controllers last week and I was sold on a 3 port for my td04 miata. Got it in today and referenced the video and its amazing how much better this set up is over a manual controller! Thanks for always having a video on amy mod I seem to want to do 🤘🤘

    Great videos. We’ve got very similar set ups. Been running open loop now for a few years and got frustrated with the inconsistency of boost v temps.
    Trying to get the closed loop tuned. That’s been a struggle so far but I can see the benefits if I get it done.

    Hey I know this is a stupid and amateurish question but I'm learning as I go. I am building up a miata slowly and when I finally put my TD04 Turbo on I am wanting to run wastegate pressure (7psi) for a little while before installing a boost controller, if I were to just run wastegate pressure I assume that the only "boost tuning" I would be doing would be watching/tweaking my AFRs to make sure they are good when I'm slowly coming into boost. Is this right? The only way to tune wastegate pressure with no boost controller etc is with AFR table? Aslong as I have a good base map with base timing and good AFRs aswell? I know spark maps also contribute but this is something I do not want to touch until I install a boost controller and take it to a dyno with a proper tuner. Can I have a safe wastegate pressure map without having to touch my spark map at all?

    If its not too much to ask, a video on how to start tuning for a freshly installed turbo would be awesome. I know to start rich and add boost and timing, but do you have a process you repeat until its refined? Thanks a lot man

    I just bought the DIYautotune EBC solenoid kit. Is this the one you're using? I am having trouble finding out how exactly to wire this up... *confused*

      I use the AEM EBC solenoid, but it's the same deal one wire goes into the options port of MS (it's a switched ground, I forget the pin number) and the other is any switched 12v source.

    Ok, a couple of questions if you don't mind...So, I noticed that you are using spark cut for overboost protection. And I read that using spark cut can potentially damage the turbo by allowing too much fuel to hit the hot turbine and cause damage. What's your take on that? And, will using both fuel and spark cut be better? Also, when I datalog and view in Megalog viewer, my AFR reading shows about 1.5 higher(leaner) than what my AEM wideband is showing. I trust the wideband controller more than I do the reading on the Megalog viewer but it makes it difficult to tune properly. Any idea what might be the issue here? Can't find a definitive answer for that. Thanks...and both your channels are awesome!

      +vkotis A couple of answers: The overboost protection is kinda like one quick power cut, not like a 2-step so it's not blowing flames, etc when you hit it. You can run it whichever way you feel more comfortable with and it will be effective. Also, you need to tune the car so you're not hitting overboost at all, it's just there for protection while you're tuning and in case anything happens to the wastegate signal line/EBC malfunction etc. Also, you can calibrate MS to read the same AFR as the gauge. Go into Tools -> calibrate AFR table and select "Custom linear wideband". Then massage the min/max voltage numbers until your MS matches your gauge. I should probably do a video on it since I've been asked many times before.

    I'm building an older V8 with Megasquirt 2 v3. It will have boost to 8psi. Do I need a wide band O2 sensor and control box for it? Thanks in advance, Bill

      Technically the car can run without a wideband, but the tuning will essentially be guesswork. I consider a wideband to be one of the most essential tuning tools, and Megasquirt relies heavily on it for many of its features. You don't necessarily need a separate AFR gauge, but I would highly highly recommend a wideband o2 sensor.

    What do you do when temperatures change drastically, either much colder or much hotter than the temp when you were tuning? Do you run a cold, normal and hot map?

      If you're going to be in drastically different temps, you should do your best to tune closed loop boost control :)

    Hi Greg, i hope you read this...
    i have a 300zx Na ..and i m thinking of going single rear mount turbo on low boost since i dont want alot of power ;
    my question is that how would i deal with fuel management? what is the most affordable and easy option for that? i m thinking of running no more than 8psi of boost ..i asked alot of z forums and groups and most of them told me to buy a TT motor and put it in , i dont want to do that i would rather change to a thicker HG and arp headstuds/bolts ..

      +Mahabubul Hoque Why even bother with head studs/gasket? 8psi isn't going to hurt anything if it's tuned right. You just need bigger injectors and to get a chip tuned for the bigger injectors and ignition timing. Talk to Specialty Z about that.

    So are you essentially tuning the wastegate actuator? I thought it just went off of vacuum lines and the psi...if you didnt tune it, would it just fully open when you hit the preset target boost at 10 psi or whatever?

      +Boosted2JZ If you have no boost controller at all, the wastegate will still open at a certain boost level (9psi wastegate will hold about 9psi, etc). A boost controller intercepts the vacuum line and controls the amount of boost that's going to the actuator, so it can "hold back" the boost until it gets to 12psi, 14psi etc. even though it's only a 9psi spring. Manual and electronic boost controllers both intercept the wastegate signal line.

      +V0rtex1986 I'm not really trying to do anything that crazy, just figured the single port TS would be worlds better than the OEM Garrett one (and it is).

      V0rtex1986 Oh I'm sure it works better. But the single port has done everything I need, so I don't see the need to upgrade. Would rather save that money for something else!

    I remember in one video that you had a switch that switched from high boost to low boost. I'm assuming this would require an electronic boost controller, but I don't understand how the switch comes into play. Could you explain how you got yours to work on your car?

      Interrupts power to the EBC solenoid. Switch off = wastegate pressure, switch on = EBC active.

      Does this mean you have your switch in-line to the ground wire on your EBC?
      IIRC the solenoid is wired to the ECU and the other wire to ground (or is it 12v? I can't recall - haven't touched the car in a while.) Thank you!

    Hi pall, I'm not convinced your right with your over boost kpa I wouldn't be surprised if I'm wrong but just check as I would want you to have a serious problem :). There are 101.3 kpa in 1 bar so using 100 is fine but it says boost not absolute pressure, so that is the pressure above atmosphere. If you put 210 in there I think your over boost will cut in at almost 30 psi (of boost not absolute)

      +ryan jessop 30psia, which is ~15psig. In MS, all of the tables must be tuned in vacuum as well, so 100kpa = atmospheric pressure, not 0kpa. Check out a picture of any MS ve table, spark table, or AFR targe table, they typically range from about 15kpa (high vacuum) to 100kpa (normal atmospheric pressure) up to 200-230kpa (14.5-18.9psig). Thanks though!

    Quick question, you set your overboost protection at 210 kPa, and according to a conversion calculator from kPa to psi, 210 kPa = 30 psi !
    Is there something I'm doing wrong ?

      Yes, overboost protection is set in absolute pressure, not boost pressure. Atmospheric pressure is ~100kpa, so setting 210kpa overboost protection is only 110kpa of boost 🙂 (15.9psi)

    I'd like to know why you chose to build the 1.6 vs the 1.8. I've been looking into the Miatas, and would be a first time Miata owner, but everyone I speak to says go with the 1.8. I would also plan on boosting with a turbo on my build. Any information you can share 1.6 vs 1.8 would be appreciated.

      +JpL4K3 1.8 is a better platform to start with. The engines can make a little more power per pound of boost, spool a turbo a little faster, and they come with a stronger differential. I had a 1.6 car and just decided I wanted to boost it. A 1.8 (especially a 99+) would outrun it with the same setup, but this car is plenty fast.

    if yours is closed at 100% and off, then how is 0% still wastegate spring pressure. please advise. sorry for the confusion but this all seems backwards.

      Picture the boost solenoid as the middle man between your pressure (intercooler piping) and the wastegate actuator. The solenoid opens to allow a certain amount of pressure through TO the actuator. So when the solenoid is at 0% and allows 100% of the pressure through, it's as if you were just running a straight vacuum line from the piping to the actuator (ie. no boost control, just wastegate). The pressure still has to push that spring open, even if the solenoid is letting all the pressure through.

      colingreczkowski must be a normally open setup, my 4 port is definately normally closed and 0% gives wastegate spring pressure. 100% at idle is always on and full open. This video must be for normally open solenoids.

    why is this based on throttle and RPM? Wouldn't it make more sense to have another MAP upstream of the throttle plate, and use that as your Y axis? that way you can make your ECU hold a boost level for every RPM

      +dandil Yes, and that's called closed loop boost control. It performs better, but is more tricky to tune. I tuned open loop boost control in this video which is much more simple.

      No, autotune will not tune the open loop boost control map as far as I know.

      +boosted 2j Amount of time the solenoid is open or closed. 0% = open, 100% = closed. 50% = open half of the time. The solenoid opens and closes really fast (usually 30-60 times per second depending on the solenoid) and only lets some of the boost pressure into the wastegate actuator. Pressure to the actuator has to be limited otherwise it would just open at 9psi all the time.

    Man this is confusing. Whenever it comes to anything electrical on a car, I'm shit. I wanna boost eventually, but I don't have the knowledge and or interest really when it comes to messing with things like the ecu. Could I just get it tuned at a shop or something? Or am I gonna have to grab a monster and study this like a collage exam? Lol don't plan on boosting till I past your test anyways

      It's worth it. One of my first cars was factory turbo and it has a factory wideband, Electronic boost controller, and you could tune the car without buying anything, only software and a laptop. I didn't even have a boost gauge or any gauge at all because my laptop software could display all of that info.
      It was *very* intimidating at first, and my first job was calibrating a simple intake mod that took me 3 months to dial in well. Now I've tuned pretty much every aspect of the car.
      The benefit is that you can constantly mod your car and tune it the way you want, whenever you want, and make multiple maps that you can switch to. I have an eco map I use when I'm low on gas or when my methanol tank runs dry.

    Do you always use open loop? what are the major differences or features of using an open loop system vs. closed loop?

      +FlabbyTheJuice No, I've used closed loop as well. Closed loop performs better and can spool a turbo faster, but is more difficult to tune. I recommend tuning in open loop first, then moving to closed loop if you want. You can still get a pretty good tune with open loop through MS though.
