Hi Andy, it's me, again. I want to really say thank you because I'm tuning an old and weak engine from a Citroen 2CV6. I made a convertion from carburator to mpfi and after having problems with the idling during a long time your tips here did me see the light and I could solve the issues. Brief, clear and hiting the right target
Andy this video is just excellent. I have a Lotus 7 with a 3sge beams and a Link Ecu. I have learned a bunch from your videos. Rex here in New Zealand.
I just installed a MS PNP2 on my Foxbody and I'm a newbie. Your video was a tremendous help. I am an elementary school teacher and this was one of the best explanations this area of tuning that I have seen so far. Thank you soooooo much.
Great video. I just installed MS in my miata and have been toying around with idle; chasing a 500 RPM idle hunt. This helped to make sense out of it. Thank you!
Hi, a very big "THANKS" from me. I was struggling with hunting idle. Sometimes it was Ok in a tiny coolant temperature range. Today saw your video and know understand the connection between load, fuel, ignition and rpm in IDLE. Tried your tips and half an hour later idle is smooth +- 20-30 RPM from target (openloop).
what a great video and great brief.... currently chasing idle on my engine with a big cam, short exhaust and shared intakes so its a bit pissy, but soley using the timing to control idle isn't something i considered, id been using the throttle stop (no iac yet) then adjusting the VE and timing tables to suit. i do use a large timing valley which helps also though.... food for thought, thanks
The problem I’m having is put it in gear it wants to climb speed but watching your other video I’m thinking the IAC. 2001 5.3 LS small camshaft . And I know timing can gain torque as well but I wanted to better Understand the idle air control thank you for the video
So this is working very similar as the “idle adaptive control” like in HPTuners . It allows you to set control parameters to the “over and under “ certain set points of timing for camshaft control .
Great content Mr. Whittle. i have been a fan and a user of MS for a long time, but I've been away from it for many years and to give you an idea of how long, my turbo car is running MS1. do you have any lessons on engines with neutral balance and aluminum flywheel/balancers? do they act similar to your engine with no flywheel? thanks
andy thank you for all the video's I am struggling with this process my self currently! I am having a hunting idle issue with stock motor, I have only been able to rectify with rich air fuel ratio's 11.8ish. is your recommended process to block off and turn off iacv, set idle rpm manually with air screw adjustment. set AFR's near 14.7, then smooth the idle with ignition timing,
Hope all is well Mr. Whittle. My question is did you keep the ignition tables zoomed like you had in the video or was that just for the lesson? I'm wondering what happens to the areas outside of cells shown when in such a tight table 🤔
So is there also an “adaptive idle control” for the over speed and under speed like in HPTuners to change the timing during idle as in a healthy cam with a lope ?
Im going to be installing ITBs on a miata, and I don't want to have to figure out installing an IAC. From what Ive read, and from what it looks like you're teaching, if I tune the motor properly, I should be able to achieve a stable idle without an IAC, correct? I don't have A/C or power steering, so the load should be pretty consistent. If I am understanding correctly, even with the changes in alternator load, I should be able to stabilize it enough by using timing to create a self-stabilizing 'zone' in the idle area of RPMs.
How do you know what the appropriate idle speed is for a motor? what variables is it based on? Could the example motor have been set to 800 idle? why or why not?
I am restoring a Jaguar V12 engine with carburators and I am thinking of an EFI conversion. Can the Megasquirt system support a V12 and can I use 4 wideband oxygen sensors to control them as close as possible. I have 4 exhaust manifolds where each has input from 3 cylinders which would allow very close controll of that big engine. Btw. Your videos are the best to understand all the facets of fuel injection. Thanks Bernhard
Bernhard List yes it can. I would recommend you head to hpacademy.com and watch those lessons about basic EFI. I’ve used that site to help since UA-cam videos only take you so far
Thanks for your reply. My engine is still in pieces but I am gathering the components on the way to convert it to EFI so everything helps. My goal is not a race engine but the smoothest running V12 being dropped into an E-Type roadster. Let’s see if it will work.
Having a issue with my idle its a stepper iac cant get it right for some reason... somebody at a shop turned my idle screw that is set by the factory ..what a mess i have now.. if anybody can help me i would appreciate...
I may add that one of the best things to do is not to use the EGO, wideband or close loop within the rpms you’re trying to idle with a big cam engine. Use the idle screw, IAC, VE table and timing table to stabilize idle. The EGO will hunt forever.

One of the best videos i ever seen. Very well, concrete explained! Wonderful
I wish there were more people like you. Thanks for helping me on my journey.
Best overall explanation of how the tables can work with or against each other.

Your videos have been invaluable. I really can't thank you enough for answering nearly every question I've had since I've started my EFI journey.

This is my #1 favorite video on youtube.
Very Informative and easy to follow. I learned a few things, Thanks Andy! This is a awesome vid.

Thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos, they are extremely helpfull for a new megasquirt user like me !
Your mastery of MLV graphs is second to none .. You make it seem obvious

Fantastic! Thank you so much for taking the time to make this
This is a godsend. Thank you for this Andy!
This is extremely helpful and very well explained! Thank you

Thank you. Very heplful! Do you have a video for solving heat soak difficult re-starts??
I'd be interested to see when/why to use the separate idle fuel and ignition maps. Thank you for the videos!
Thanks Andy. Great video that explains very well. Could you also include spark based idle control in your next video?

Mr. Whittle, did you ever make that IAC video showing how to change target RPM while warming up from cold start? Hope all is well.
Very well explained! I love your videos
Thank you now I got it and hopefully be able to time my idle correctly
clear explanation.. this clear a lots of miss understanding...
quickly learned to turn off EGO correction at idle, I had it turn on and have struggled with hunting.
Excellent, well done!
holy smokes, i did think it was an isc valve! this saved my life lol ty 2:15
Thank You, Andy, as always.
Very good information, followup question:
Is it possible to idle the engine from cold to warm with only ignition correction?
excellent video, nice explained and very helpfull
Wow I learned so much from this video, thank you
Very gud info.. can u discuss pls. The injector. For. Volume metric. ...

That tight zoom was just for viewing the idle data in MLVHD.

True. It is free to try.

thank you so much my idle was to high I try everything set the timming was 38 at idle to 12degree finally rpm drop to 1000 rmp
Hi Andy. Would you be able to help me with hanging idle on my Buell XB12XT 2009? Regards

How long (minutes) did you take to capture this log ?

Propirtional, intergral, derivitave tuning. It's complicated and cant be simplified.
