“The Smiling Man” sounds a lot like someone who consumed too many synthetic stimulants (mephedrone, methamphetamine, etc.) because I have seen people move in bizarre ways, even walk in bizarre ways, while under the influence from stimulants, and I’ve seen people’s faces get “stuck” in strange expressions due to stimulants as well. This sounds like behavior that was occurring during the height of the prevalence of bath salts.
Michael Dunahee's case happened about 30 mins away from where I live, every time my family drives by that playground that kid's running through my mind. The scariest part about it I think is that at that age we was old enough to be told he was someone else, so he could be alive right now, having no idea who he actually is.
I used to live in Victoria, BC. This is shocking, and I used to live in BC for 6 years during my middle/high-school days. I always went to the playground with my parents because I feared there may be a creep or two lurking around.

While I definitely agree that kids that small need to be supervised, we also need to remember that this was the 90s. The time where kids would go out and play and come back when the streetlights came on. Nowadays, due to the internet, it’s much more common knowledge that creepy people can be found anywhere and parents are much more careful. Many parents at the time had no real reason to not believe “what could happen in this quaint town” until something actually happened , unfortunately

Don’t forget that the man in a bear costume from “the year was 1991” story is actually a legit creepypasta character named Mr. Bear from the story “1999.”
I have lived in NC 10 minutes from Emerald Isle for over 30 years. The Mowgli's Palace never was started, you are correct it is just a story. However we did have 2 abandoned water parks for a long time. Definitely creepy to walk through at night though!
@zerotodona1495 Nooo, don't do that. Sure it's a little infantilizing to have number candles unless it's a big milestone like 30, 50, etc. But it doesn't have to be gender-related. Why should it be any different to share a woman's age than a man's? I've never understood this conceit. I'd rather be honest about my age and have someone think I look good for that number than lie and say I'm younger than I am just to have people think I look haggard for that false age.
The smiling man I thought was based off the cryptid called Ingrid Cold (also called the smiling man due to his ever present wide smile) who’s in West Virginia and appeared around the same time as Mothman. It’s said he from alien origins and mainly talked to one man and his family who was interviewed by the same reporter who did the mothman prophecies but some people of West Virginia also reported encountering him including getting chased by the entity. I didn’t know it was “real” story, I thought the guy made it off the cryptid and it was just a fictional horror story.
Finally, someone who did their research and got both the Abandoned by Disney story details AND the actual Discovery Island details both correct! So many people get those and other abandoned parks mixed up. Hats off to you!
I actually went to school with Michael Dunahee’s sister. Growing up a few years after the case, the worry certainly hung around my town for many years after. Even with the FBI assisting in the case, there’s still only theories years afterwards.

I wasn't a kid when it happened but barely 18 when a masked man came out of his alley hiding place to, I suppose, grab me because there was nothing spoken, no "gimmie your cash" or anything like that. Only saved by chancing to be carrying (by some miracle) a mobile scanner that went off with a dispatch call that second and scared him off. Later learned this was on the same block, only a few houses away from the murder house of the so-called Kansas City Butcher serial torturer/killer of young men. Shrugging it off as just location coincidence sometimes works.
The fact that Disney banned the guy from visiting any Disney parks who checked out their abandoned island is so sketchy. There must have been something big they were hiding there and didn’t want him to find out more about it.
Okay it got even more sketchy when he said that Disney then installed heavy surveillance on that abandoned island. Why would you spend all that money for an abandoned island??? Sus as heck lol
I mean the guy did break the rules, I understand the intrigue but you break the rules you get consequences. Those abandoned places are usually not sound structurally and can be dangerous, if someone went there and got hurt or died Disney would be liable. So they probably patrol the area to dissuade people from taking unnecessary risk, nothing sinister just common sense.
18:37 delusions can be so terrifying. Back in 9th grade I had a night (could have been longer, but psychosis messes with your memory a lot of the time) where I believed I had offed my partner at the time and buried them next door. I was texting them about this as they tried to convince me they were fine and I just didn’t believe it was them. There’s also been countless times I believe someone, or more often some*thing*, is in the house trying to hurt me and/pr my loved ones. It’s horrible to live with. I got on meds a few months ago that have actually been working for me and it’s been amazing not to constantly deal with it. People love to mock psychotic people online, but it’s genuinely so hard to live with. I’m just glad I don’t remember most of the episodes I’ve had cause I doubt I could sleep at night.
@@HeartInTheSnow well it's the backlash of recent movies. Or stuff that's being shown on the Disney channel. As well as the employees who are rather rebellious against their bosses. So it's like the inmates running this insane asylum.
"Disney mysteriously abandoned Discovery Island" I live in Orlando and worked at Disney when they closed the island. It's not mysterious. Poor attendance, cost to maintain, Animal Kingdom opening are just a few reasons. They never did anything with it because it's a giant pain to get to - unless you're interested in swimming in the "freezing, snake and gator infested water" (also a HUGE exaggeration). There's more concern about the cleanliness of the water than anything - people are gross and just chuck their garbage into the lake constantly.
I remember Discovery Island at Disney. Pretty sure I heard it was abandoned because it was a pain to work at. You had to ferry over to it, so if you worked there it wasn't an easy commute. Most likely though it was because Disney decided it wasn't worth the travel costs.

Smiling Man: there's two ways stories like this can be fake; intentionally and unintentionally. And what I mean by that is you of course have people completely making stuff up, but you can also have people who encounter something and their memory of it or their writing style makes it more fantastical than it was. Perhaps this was just a guy doing a weird dance and smiling and the OP, unnerved by someone being a bit weird, hyperfocused his memory on the smile. Remember how fallible human memory can be, and how wonky our perception can get.
This has nothing to do with the Smiling Man, but my uncle whose like 42-43 used to tell a story of guy who would come to his college football practices at night and stare with a smile for hours til it was over, He told us (me, my siblings and cousins) that the guy stood at 6’5 and would always have a dirty white beater on with dress pants, he claimed the coaches got involved personally with the guy but he still kept doing it, then claimed the police and school got involved and solved the issue, But few months laters after the Police handled the situation my uncle claims that the guy would follow him and his buddy’s home from school after practice😂 True or Not I don’t know but that’s insane
To the parents of the missing boy: I hope you find peace of his disappearance, it must hurt still (I personally never experienced a disappearance and am thankful but hurt for those who experienced it)
I remember the smiling man story, and seeing the one short film about it. Idk why I didn’t look into it at the time to see it was posted in another subreddit, as I thought this was a creepypasta. Now hearing where it originates from, yeah I wouldn’t be surprised since there’s a lot of weird freaks that could be roaming the streets late at night. I never go out for any night walks unless I’m with my parents, just can’t see myself putting myself in that situation for anyone to come up to me and strike when my guard is down

The vanishing Runner Back in April 2022 I had a job at my dad‘s work it was a machine shop. and every Thursday we would clean. I did most of the mopping I had a Rubbermaid yellow mop, bucket, and a wooden mop, the mop head always had metal pieces in it but normally I’d mop upstairs in the lunchroom in the design room, etc. and lastly, I would mop the back bathroom normally I was back there all alone, but the Erie part about it was that it was far from the front and late at night but one night as normal my sisters and me were finishing cleaning and I was headed back to The bathroom but the mop bucket got stuck on a metal fragment on the ground, then suddenly while I was looking down, I saw something out of the corner of my eye in front of me. The only explanation I have is my heart started racing as soon as I saw it it was like a tall person. wearing what appears to be nothing very skinny more than normal. Just running fast, but weird. I quickly ran without the mop bucket. I got out my phone. turned on the flashlight in the room and there was nothing it was the strangest thing ever since then I’ve gotten a different job but it’s something I remember to this day.
the smiling man one is so funny to me, like are people really saying they made it up? stuff like that happens ALL the time, of COURSE its real. Ask any woman, hell even just any man who goes out alone at night regularly or in the city, and they more than likely tell you they've had at least 1 creepy stranger randomly try to come up smiling at them acting weird and dancing or giggling or like they're excited about something nefarious that only they know they're going to do. That or there have been homeless or drunk people who would dance around and startle people, even if they meant no harm.
Yes, I can confirm. i used to hang around out in the backyard real late at night around my house to go out for a smoke. And some man had climbed to peer his head over my fence and said "hello how are you?" (It was like 2:30 AM) lemme tell ya I DO NOT go out at night anymore even if I'm in my backyard.
@Gizmosnitto13 Nothing, haha I had never seen the man again, and I hadn't seen him around my neighborhood before. What makes it even creepier is that whole week. My dog was like weirdly scared to go outside at night to go to the bathroom in the yard. Makes me think he was tryna steal my dog or smth. I'm not sure, but it creeps me out til this day so I don't go outside late at night anymore.
13:22 Those cards aren't actually tarot cards but cards used in a spanish card game called Brisca! I used to play it all the time in Puerto Rico growing up. It plays similar to spades with certain suits being stronger/weaker and having point values.
6:03 - Alright you want to know? The smiling man is none other than talking head's David Byrne. Think about it. Who else is tall, slender, notorious for wearing grey suits and walking and moving erotically?
I don't know if you meant to write "erratically", but erotically is way funnier. Now I'm picturing the smiling man doing a sexy dance at me... moving ever closer... am I turned on? Am I terrified? I realize that I can't decide, I'm confused as I continue to watch, transfixed by his gyrating hips and wobbly arms... his head suddenly snaps down from looking up, and he's now staring at me. It feels like he's looking into my soul. We stand there and stare at each other for a moment, and then he reaches up with his bony hands. "HONK HONK!" He squawks. My breasts are in his hands. We make love right there in the street.
Ohoh, about smiling dude, I've seen something like that late at night when I was out with a friend of mine ,we saw a man/woman dressed with a white jacket dancing in circles in the middle of the road ,when we get closer it kinda just looked like he/she was phasing in and out like it was a projection (that's what I thought when we were closing on him/her) but it turned out to be something but when we got close the person left opposite to us,it was weird giving the fact that it danced in the middle of the road in the midnight all by himself/herself
I actually appreciate that you're not immediately dismissing The Smiling Man as fake. Especially because, a few months ago something equally as creepy had happened to me and when I told the story online a bunch of people replied to me to say how obviously fake my story was, despite it being 100% true. I ended up just deleting the comment. To briefly summarise, while in a local 24 hour store at 3 AM, I had encountered a tall man staring at the meat section who then went on to talk to me about cannibalism and ask me if the store was selling human meat, as he had a creepy smile on his face. It was a very weird experience. The story did sound fake and I totally get why people doubt these kinds of accounts, however it's pretty annoying being on the other end of it knowing you're being truthful.
I got to take a jetski to the shore of Discovery Island and it's a strange experience. Even from far away you can see the decrepit walkways and decor. Abandoned by Disney is a really cool take on Discovery Island and its one of my favorite creepypastas.

The scariest part about it I think is that at that age we was old enough to be told he was someone else, so he could be alive right now, having no idea who he actually is.
i only clicked the video because i saw his pic. i remember this when it happened.

Who lets a four year old go anywhere by themselves? Poor kid didn't deserve that kind of neglect.

Yeah, that’s true. The story is real, but the bear aspect was definitely added to make it a sequel/prequel.

1991… I wish my mother would stop putting number candles on my cake. Getting old shouldn’t be broadcasted for women…
The Why Files has a really great episode about Ingrid Cold, if you're interested.

@@kathrenBurnettthe story is made up.
Walt Disney was involved with the Freemasons, just look at club 33.

Post more scary true stories, these videos are getting me through high school. Love your videos
Perfect video to watch while studying for my finals 😌
This has nothing to do with the Smiling Man, but my uncle whose like 42-43 used to tell a story of guy who would come to his college football practices at night and stare with a smile for hours til it was over, He told us (me, my siblings and cousins) that the guy stood at 6’5 and would always have a dirty white beater on with dress pants, he claimed the coaches got involved personally with the guy but he still kept doing it, then claimed the police and school got involved and solved the issue, But few months laters after the Police handled the situation my uncle claims that the guy would follow him and his buddy’s home from school after practice😂 True or Not I don’t know but that’s insane
this is scarier than the stories in the video

Back in April 2022 I had a job at my dad‘s work it was a machine shop. and every Thursday we would clean.
@TheLadySquid bro what did you do??
I knew the youtuber was getting it wrong as soon as i heard "Tarot Cards" even before the image showed up :P
I saw him as Jim Carrey from The Mask 😂
Ohoh, about smiling dude, I've seen something like that late at night when I was out with a friend of mine ,we saw a man/woman dressed with a white jacket dancing in circles in the middle of the road ,when we get closer it kinda just looked like he/she was phasing in and out like it was a projection (that's what I thought when we were closing on him/her) but it turned out to be something but when we got close the person left opposite to us,it was weird giving the fact that it danced in the middle of the road in the midnight all by himself/herself
Another great drop Sir - thanks for all your hard work and commitment 😀

As someone who frequents seattle i can 100% believe the smiling man. Ive seen homeless people everywhere and one man was throwing a butter knife at a dumpster.
