    The live version of this song at Paris in 1970 is a treat, a young Ozzie and Bill Ward just annihilating the drums.

    On this memorial Day I want to honor, Sgt. Ferdinan C. Richardson, 27, an intelligence analyst with the 10th Mountain Division's 10th Aviation Brigade, gave his life trying to protect his fellow soldiers from the threat of rocket-grenade launchers that were concealed by Somali militiamen in the back streets of Mogadishu.
    Ferdinan Richardson, of Watertown, N.Y., was one of five soldiers who boarded a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter on the night of Sept. 26 to investigate a report that launchers had been deployed near the new port area of the city.
    As he scanned the area below, ground fire reached up to strike the fast-moving helicopter. The pilot managed to crash-land the Black Hawk in a street. Ferdinan Richardson, the door gunner and the crew chief were killed; the pilot and co-pilot were injured, but escaped the hostile mob that gathered at the crash site.

      Perhaps if the U.S. Military Industrial Complex stopped its global aggression of Empire, impoverishing numerous countries the world over and creating enemies in its' insatiable greed, there wouldn't be needless deaths of service men and women.
      “I spent 33 years and four months in active military service and during that period I spent most of my time as a high-class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism. I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefit of Wall Street. I helped purify Nicaragua for the International Banking House of Brown Brothers in 1902-1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for the American sugar interests in 1916. I helped make Honduras right for the American fruit companies in 1903. In China in 1927 I helped see to it that Standard Oil went on its way unmolested. Looking back on it, I might have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents.”
      ― Maj. General Smedley D. Butler, War Is a Racket

    I was the only one in the band in the 1990's that had an Ozzy type growl in my voice so I always sang this one. This song is a powerful statement against the war mongers in DC. Vietnam was the war of the day. It has only gotten worse since the 70's. I don't know the whole catalogue from Black Sabbath but this song is a plea for righteousness to be done!

      Not completely. Yes, the Vietnam war was at its mid point when this song came out. But this is about all wars and probably has more to do with WW1 & WW2 as these four members grew up in England where their families or friends of their families and their grandparents had some terrible memories of the Blitz(sirens at the beginning) and casualties from the many wars England had been involved with for centuries. Everyone was sick of war at the time with Vietnam. The beat goes on with all the wars after Vietnam and today’s wars. This was the right time with the zeitgeist then to put out the greatest anti war song ever!

    • @bishopswoodcrafts
      @bishopswoodcrafts 5 місяців тому +1

      Black Sabbath are a Birmingham band (England) born in the early 50's just a couple of months after WW2 had ended, and the ravages of the 2nd world War were still clearly evident in the 60's and 70's in Brum which was devastated by German bombing. This was a generic anti-war song by Sabbath that happened to come out during the Vietnam war and this song (as were many others of that period) was "adopted" by the American soldiers during that conflict.

  • @mikecaetano
    @mikecaetano 6 місяців тому +2

    Nice! We played this in the band I was in my freshman year of high school circa 1980. Our drummer was great and eventually went pro. The video came along more than forty years after the song dropped. So it really has less to do with the band and the music and more to do with the fan that made it a dystopian fantasy short. A better version, perhaps, would have chosen images from the Vietnam War and used the faces of the politicians and generals made infamous for their roles in that war. For some banging Black Sabbath tunes lacking reference to reality, check out "Fairies Wear Boots", "Iron Man", "N.I.B.", "Paranoid", and "Supernaut" along with others.

    A bit of history here: the war pig was a technique developed by the Roman legions against Carthago and their elephants of war, based on the idea that a pig runs straight when set on fire and an elephant is panicking in the vicinity of fire. Thus a war pig is a unit sacrificed during battle.

    Great point about how things change but they’re always the same. It’s a great song to return to though because it really illustrates that very point. It can be good to get in touch with that feeling just to deal with the frustrations of the reality. Great art can help you escape and deal with the world in a way that helps you process reality in a safe, healing way. Music is great for that, and I think Black Sabbath created a cocoon we can all go into to deal with all of the feelings regarding war in a healthy way. Music can help get feelings out, which can help you move through the difficulties of living with the reality. Thanks for a great reaction!

    This song is a public punishment about everything about war, violence, weapons as well, a very explicit lyrics from Ozzy`s voice among the "nasty" and crude sound of guitar licks, bass and drums, the very beginning of heavy metal starting in 1970, absolutely. Let`s don`t forget that the band member`s parents and grand parents were from Birmingham, England, a city devastated because that german daily bomb blitz in September/November 1940, II World War. A whole critic about that described in a heavy metal song, wich is an anti War Anthem until today, as well.

    If you think about it, war has always and will always be here, as long as there are people. Also, songs around that time were going to have some tinge of war and destruction surrounding them. However, hard content or not, you can always zone out with War Pigs because of the fabulous guitar and drums and Ozzy being Ozzy! It is like GoodNight Saigon by Billy Joel - I admit if I listen to the lyrics, I start bawling, but it is such a beautiful song at the same time. Fear not!

    One of the very best anti-war songs ever, it caused many an argument back in the day and patents in general did not get it. It you listen to the lyrics, it is totally right and the music helped propel the message. Also one of their best tunes, no matter the subject. Bill Ward is sick on the drums but is matched by the power and glory of Iommi, Butler and the one and only Ozzy. Talk about a band having it all together right away, 1970 is a seminal year in Rock History with the first 2 Sabbath albums and amazing !music from dozens of artists. More Sabbath, from the same album, do Electric Funeral for more great vibes. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎸🎶
