@Maggie There"s a new video of Voiceplay and your favorite Geoff Castellucci and its called Encanto. Its the same name as the animated movie by Disney.
If you want to hear the style known as “ epic doom metal “ , Solitude Aeturnus , MIRROR OF SORROW , from 1991...guy has a powerful voice , as do all the vocalists in that genre .

I mean, I enjoy Maggie's reactions and all, but being snooty about intonation when analyzing global fame....kinda off putting. Obviously did something right if he's well known. If music has a message, or passion, a little out of tune, especially on a stage loud enough to render in-ears less effective, in the 80s..cut some slack.

She was saying "sharp", etc., but that to me is just how the song sounds. They wrote it, performed it originally, own it. And they owned it in this performance. This is what it is supposed to sound like. If someone were to sing it less 'sharp' at those points, I'd probably say they should go listen to Ozzy again and do it better next time. That's just my take. But I get it. Different strokes for different folks.
I think Bill, John Bonham and Ian Paice are just phenomenal drummers! People always say Bonham’s better … I think theyre pretty even, just different strengths. Bonham’s major point over the others is his power. Otherwise, his chops aren’t really that much better than Ward’s and certainly not better than Paice’s. Whichever one is better, just depends on which I happen to be listening to lol
Tommy Iommi is the guitarist it's iommi like Eye-oh-me. Not long before they were going into the studio to record their first album he cut the tips of his right hand fingers off on a machine. Because they were so tender he tuned down the guitar so the strings wouldn't hurt as bad, thus creating the heavy metal sound of the tuned down guitars that everyone copied after. We are fortunate that there's even documentation of this part of Sabbath career it is so early on. Recording could be better but it was 1970. If you've ever performed in front of a screaming wall of Marshall amplifiers and a live drum set with no partition around it without in your monitors or even playback and Stage wedge monitors you might have a bit more understanding of his difficulties with pitch. Maggie Reneé listening to Black Sabbath? Really? I'm impressed! I saw Black Sabbath live in 1972 in Frankfurt Germany and a recorded video just doesn't do the experience justice.

It's not very distinctive unless you're listening attentively to it, but Geezer Butler does a fiery performance in this song... Even though they only show his hands plucking on those bass strings for a second or two, you can tell he's jamming like the best of the best... Great reaction Maggie! You're watching Heavy Metal being born! Those of us around at this time remember how life changing this was. Interesting fact, guitarist Tony Iommi, who is left handed, lost the tips of his middle and ring fingers of his right hand in an industrial accident at 17. Wanting to keep playing, he made finger tips out of a melted soap bottle and wrapped them in leather. As this is his fretting hand it changed the way he played. This may have contributed to the creation of the metal guitar chords.
I remember this song on KISW, the introduction is definitely long; but I can jam out to this. It's actually true what he is saying; Politicians do start war. This is awesome!!!
I applaud your choice of this song. Ozzy’s “sharpness” is partly due to the fact that the music is so loud that Oz had to sing and shout from the gut and soul. I know this from having been right at edge of the stage. It’s a great part of the musical style that Sabbath perfectly defined - raw power at absolute volume. They are the best heavy rock / metal band I ever saw or heard. Their massive sound was never fully captured on tape, film, or digital media. It was power created by God himself.
Im late. I think it's awesome you're a trained singer and still find greatness in music that is basically untrained high school chums that just love rocking. I'm a musician, play several instrument to an acceptable level, can't sing at all. Well, something straight baritone, rock, blues, where groove is as important as ability, I can get by. Lol. Anyhow, yeah, it's not perfect, but it's rock n roll, something just magic about it. I've seen them have to hold Bill up, give him oxygen so he could take a bow. Even in his older years he refused to play less , he was spent and looked scary at the end ! Great guy. I have a friend that was in a rehab clinic with him, became long friends. Not me, my buddy. But I've heard great tales.
Maggie converted from Opera to ROCK girl, Put your seatbelt on this will be a wild ride. Bill Ward the drummer acts like those drums owe him money... And Tony the lead guitarist Is missing the finger tips on his right hand from an accident. Yes the hand he frets the guitar with..!!! Do you think this song might be an "ANTI-WAR"?.. Yes my dear that is a young John Osborne (Ozzy). Wild man deluxe!!!!... I saw them in concert in the mid-1970's.. They melted our brains!!!!!...... So darn GOOD!!! Mega-energy. To the point that you wondered if they were pumped up OR assisted by some chemicals??..... ALL I know for sure is it was one of the concerts I ever went to... You are the expert. I think he is sharp on purpose.... At around 10:40 something there is a shot of Tony's fingertips... The man is/was one hell of a good guitarist... May I suggest you find and watch their NIB video.... The bass is strong in that video. Also, take your headphones off & head bang a little.. You have the hair for it..... ENJOY....
Black Sabbath played and created music as if they were one person, this was pretty much them through the entirety of their long illustrious, never to matched career.
First time listener of you and this song. The drummer has to be one of the best of all time. I am self taught in singing and unfortunately I never tried to make a career at it. I think I would love to sing big band music. I have a vast range in my voice but unfortunately at 58 I doubt I will ever go anywhere with it. You on the other hand are gorgeous and I hope you do well in your career. Love your black hair and your bubbly personality.
I remember this so well. I think I was a sophomore / Jr. in high school when this came out. Wild time of booze /wine stashed in lockers. Could get almost anything you wanted in the Girl bathroom, you could buy a three-finger lid of Pot or a Rack of Whites for $10, LSD for a Buck a hit. I shock my grandkids with the Hippy stories of my youthful escapades of skinny dipping etc. GRANDMA!! YOU DIDN'T. Oh yes, I did. Growing up in the 60's/70s was one big party.
I think this is the song Walpurgis Moon. The record company rejected it due to heavy Satanic themes. They reworked this song into Warpigs, an antiwar song. I could be wrong, because I am not a Black Sabbath expert. I can't imagine what a crowd in 1970 thought of this performance. Of course, I wasn't even born then and I am 50.
The early magic of Bill Ward (drums), Geezer Butler(bassist, lyricist), Tony Iommi(guitar) and Ozzy Osborn (belting vocals and showmanship). From working in factory to inventing a stage genre - AKA Black Sabbath!
This was a protest against the Vietnam war (and others). It was 1970, at least there was an anti-war generation at one time. I don't know what the hell is wrong with people today.
He gets the high pitched squeals from the guitar because he has two prosthetic fingertips , later in the bands line up they had a singer named tony Martin who was a good singer also

I think it's o.k. to mention this, right here. I will even add one more: GRAI, a pagan folk metal band from Tartarstan, Russia, is currently posting songs from live gigs. Every comment, asking for peace or supporting the Ukraine will recieve a "heart" from the band within hours. Beeing russians, they cannot call it a war. (Up to 15yrs in prison ahead.) But the topic is coming up in the comments. THEIR way, to make the truth heard to their many russian subscribers. Worth, taking a look? The more traffic they get, the more the algorithsm will suggest those vids. Greetings from the far north of Germany!
They got so good at playing instruments because the alternative was working in a sheet metal factory pressing speaker brackets for Ford cars. I know the lead guitarist lost part of his finger during an industrial accident and his guitar days were very nearly over before they started. (He fashioned a new finger tip for himself out of a thimble as I recall)
I was 15, when I 1st heard "Into the void" in 1975. My first "hard rock" song. The term "metal" was not yet invented. Beeing german, my english was....kinda basic. hehe. But I loved it! You've named one point: the ideas. Tony Iommi was and is a genius in writing songs. I used to joke that later bands would make a whole album of only one of the at least 4 riffs that he implemented in one song. bg Geezer Butler, btw, is writings the lyrics. If you wanna dig in deeper: start from the beginning. Not giving advice for any particular song. Just one: don't do the hits. Everyone does that. Rather do a try and error thing about finding songs. It'll also help to unterstand the fascination of those bands at their time. The 1st album of Uriah Heep was very different to the following ones (due to changes of band members). With Iron Butterfly, you should start with: The Iron Butterfly Theme. I.e.: who is reacting to "In my time of dying" by Led Zeppelin? Looking for drums: that would be a one. Greetings from the far north of Germany!
Tommi Iommi, the guitarist, basically started what became the foundation of heavy metal guitar technique. He is further remarkable in that he has artificial fingertips on his right hand ( the hand that works the fretboard) due to an accident as a teenager. The fact that he can play at all is a tribute to his determination, skill and creativity.
I agree with this. I may even go further and say best rock song of all time, personally. I'd put it ahead of Stairway or Bohemian Rhapsody, for example. Hotel California is great, too, but if I had to choose one song from the genre that stands out as impressive in all aspects -- lyrics, singing, musicianship, etc. -- I can't think of another that brings it all together better than this one. Every time I hear it, I become more confident of this take. Then again, there are probably days I'd pick a different song. Ha. It may depend on what's fresh in my mind.
Just listened to side 1 of Paranoid last night on vinyl for the first time in a long time, damn, what an opening track. Glad you are able to keep an open mind and dive into a classic metal song!
Another great anti-war song that is even more heartbreaking today is Jinjer's song Home Back about the 2014 war when they had to leave their homes in eastern Ukraine. The lyrics are powerful, Tatiana's vocals are raw, and the video by a production team in Kyiv really brings it home.
The final production obviously is a lot more clearer and the Video produced later bring clarity to the meaning of the song! The song is over 50 yrs old!
This is hilarious. LOVE IT. We all know Ozzy is NOT a great technical vocalist. But critiquing him for being "pitchy" is like critiquing a punk rock singer for it. They aren't there for that purpose.
they were on a lot of acid during this, and angry. lyrics were all over the place but the vibe was there for days. vietnam vets hold their fist up to this song. ive seen it in bars.

Gotta love how dirty that guitar is.
This was one of THE songs that started the revolution in hard rock.
Notice that Bill Ward is using the drum sticks backwards. Don’t forget Geezer Butlers bass which brings everything together
This is an early version of the song ! They changed the lyrics by the time they recorded the studio version.
I remember this song on KISW, the introduction is definitely long; but I can jam out to this. It's actually true what he is saying; Politicians do start war. This is awesome!!!
Nobody hits those drums harder than Bill Ward. He's 70 now and still hits them that hard. And like you said he doesn't just drum he plays music.
That is a young ozzy. He really has a great singing voice which most people don't know about him, they just think he's an evil person.
You are very open-minded for an opera trained singer.. Hats off and a good analysis.
I'm a fat overeater and my hair is greasy and I'm going to criticize Ozzy on his pitch
Bill Ward is beating those drums like they owe him money!
Thanks for the performance analysis and overall thoughts at the end.
Bill Ward beating them drums like they owe him money 😂
This is from that famous show in Paris, in 1970. Bill Ward as the bomb here! Great drummer. Geezer is massive, as usual!
That's nothing but raw talent 💯🔥🤘
I love that your a wonderful Opera singer and at the same time love to ROCK
Maggie converted from Opera to ROCK girl,
Put your seatbelt on this will be a wild ride.
As good as the singing, guitar, base is my man on drums is just Fawkn Killin it!!! Geeze. Whole song is still relevant now
Great job Maggie! Can't wait to see more classic rock & metal. Love these songs!
Sorry about the technical difficulties earlier! Can't wait to see you in less than 1 hour TONIGHT! 🥰
Many people think that without Black Sabbath heavy metal wouldn’t exist. I gotta say I’m one of them.
Tony the guitar player was these fingertips in a factory accident. He wears prosthetic fingertips on his right hand which He plays the notes with
First time listener of you and this song.
Thank you so much! Hope to see you tonight?
I remember this so well. I think I was a sophomore / Jr. in high school when this came out. Wild time of booze /wine stashed in lockers. Could get almost anything you wanted in the Girl bathroom, you could buy a three-finger lid of Pot or a Rack of Whites for $10, LSD for a Buck a hit. I shock my grandkids with the Hippy stories of my youthful escapades of skinny dipping etc. GRANDMA!! YOU DIDN'T. Oh yes, I did. Growing up in the 60's/70s was one big party.
Young people today think they invented sex..lol :)
A forever masterpiece. So proud to be from the same city. Brummie legends.
Yes, "eating rats innards", "Walpurgis" & "Funeral Pyres" were part of the original version.
You got it right, friend.
With the maimed god and the mad poet on guitar and bass many people miss the subtle brilliance of Bill on drums. Great reaction.
The early magic of Bill Ward (drums), Geezer Butler(bassist, lyricist), Tony Iommi(guitar) and Ozzy Osborn (belting vocals and showmanship). From working in factory to inventing a stage genre - AKA Black Sabbath!
Hope it’s the live show from December 1970 in Paris ...incredible show ...Ozzy isn’t a trained vocalist, I don’t think, but the band as fantastic
The standout in that Paris show is definitely Bill Ward. He is an absolute beast on the drum kit
What’s different about Sabbath , from other metal acts and most rock acts, is they had an intelligent lyricist in bassist Terry “Geezer “ Butler
Ozzy is a god to heavy metal plain and simple when he is gone he will be cherished forever
This was a protest against the Vietnam war (and others). It was 1970, at least there was an anti-war generation at one time. I don't know what the hell is wrong with people today.
He gets the high pitched squeals from the guitar because he has two prosthetic fingertips , later in the bands line up they had a singer named tony Martin who was a good singer also
With 3 members of its band trapped in Kyiv organizing aid and preparing to defend the city, a reaction to Jinjer's "Home Back" would be more than just poignant now. 💙💛🌻
(Up to 15yrs in prison ahead.)
But the topic is coming up in the comments.
THEIR way, to make the truth heard to their many russian subscribers.
Worth, taking a look? The more traffic they get, the more the algorithsm will suggest those vids.
Greetings from the far north of Germany!
i have tickets to yesterday's concert in katy, texas. obviously cancelled, poor me. guessing the guys have bigger problems lately.
It isn't sharp, it is what he wanted.
Tony Iommi is my favorite guitarist of all time. He is the riff master. There will never be another.
Hi, Maggie. Looking foward to this react. Will it be the studio version or live? If live, can it be from Paris 1971? Thank you very much!
That Paris show is absolutely terrific!
Greatest Hard Rock/ Metal song of all time.
I'm glad you like the guitarist not bad for missing 2 finger tips and still sounds good from a factory accident
In 70 ,Black Sabbath are loud and hard, the fathers of metal....
Some talented young men. If they keep it up, they might become famous.
😅
Just listened to side 1 of Paranoid last night on vinyl for the first time in a long time, damn, what an opening track. Glad you are able to keep an open mind and dive into a classic metal song!
the smell never leaves you NEVER
BURNING BODYS
Love these reactions and btw Tony’s last name is pronounced Eye-owe-me
This album was such an influence on the kids of the seventies! I still have blacklights for when I play this!
Maggie, you did it again... that's an i, not an L. Tony "eye-OH-me".
Another great anti-war song that is even more heartbreaking today is Jinjer's song Home Back about the 2014 war when they had to leave their homes in eastern Ukraine. The lyrics are powerful, Tatiana's vocals are raw, and the video by a production team in Kyiv really brings it home.
Thank you for your suggestion! 😊
The final production obviously is a lot more clearer and the Video produced later bring clarity to the meaning of the song!
The song is over 50 yrs old!
the bass andrummer both are killer
The fire created a civilization, black sabbath created another one
Yes ... listen to the studio version. There are a few differences from the live performance.
The music video for this is awesome.
The later music video version features the final album version, really kicks ass!🤘🤘🤘
I have been listening to Sabbath since 1974 and still do now I play drums in a cover band because of Black Sabbath
You don't see Geezer very often but he's the primary lyricist for the band.
I like the technique on your hopping front snap kick in the intro
To be fair, Ozzy was stoned out of his mind when he gave this performance lol
This is hilarious. LOVE IT. We all know Ozzy is NOT a great technical vocalist. But critiquing him for being "pitchy" is like critiquing a punk rock singer for it. They aren't there for that purpose.
they were on a lot of acid during this, and angry. lyrics were all over the place but the vibe was there for days. vietnam vets hold their fist up to this song. ive seen it in bars.
maggie listening to fifty year old sabbath....it was whole different time back then girl....and some of us survived it
Bill Ward demonstrates he is a beast live in this video.
Hahaha! "Sometimes he's really sharp, maybe he's nervous...". MAYBE he was really freakin high on coke and/or meth! More Sabbath reactions please!
😂😂😂
They fucking created this kind of music. Also ozzys been singing without autotune for 60 years. What are you doing?
One of the greatest anti-war anthems ever. Aganist The Military Industrial Complex. Yes Ozzie is young this was 52 years ago.
