Right? Straight to the point right after search terms! Thank fuck! I get so tired of hearing some knob talk about his life and daily driver for the first 10 mins of a video of they even get to demonstrating what their title mentions at all.
The unequal length headers defiantly sound better but you go equal length to help with cylinder cooling and overall performance, generally speaking from a daily/street application going equal length is unnecessary for the little bit of power change but In a true high power racing scenario equal length is needed
@@domenicstobie2163 thanks for that detail, as I would like to convert my FR-S to UEL for sound alone, but am on the fence because of heat and power. Glad to know it makes little difference if I'm not going for a super race-ready setup, which I'm not
@Bryan Liguori I just did a little bit of research and for the brz and frs platform going uel May lead to a small decrease in power buuut it’s very popular to switch to uel for the rumble and the power loss can easily be corrected with an off the shelf tune from Cobb or even getting a pro tune to get more power but for the most part it shouldn’t be a huge change in power and if heat is something you’re noticing an exhaust heat wrap might be something to think about, at the end of the day just worry about what’s going to make you more excited and happy with your car because there is always ways to prevent and correct the “faults” if that makes any sense
the whole point of a Subaru to me has always been the unequal sound. the equal header just makes it sound like any other 4cyl out there. very first mod I did to my 86 was put the unequal header so I could hear the Subaru rumble
Great comparison video. Just learning about what headers have to do with exhaust sound - I thought the "Subie burble" was mainly because it's a flat-4, but with the equal-lengths it sound a lot like an inline-4. This video is a model for how exhaust sound comparisons should go.
ap2pat yea true but it also is a stock unequal, if it was a performance unequal that was catless , it would sound wayy betters like my unequals sound nothing like that cause I have a performance one. And if sounds amazing when pulling
the equal length removes the subaru sound and makes it sound like a Silvia. nothing wrong with that but the subaru sound is unique and should be preserved for everyones enjoyment.
+ltlocus Sounds just like my old air cooled volkswagen beetle.. all these flat engines sound that way,but i think the old beetle sounded better with a aftermarket 4n1 system. This things just another foreign car with a fart can.
Performance, reliability and efficiency beat sound out in any rational car enthusiasts mind. Which is why fast subies always have EL’s. Plus with EL’s the car runs better and helps lessen the chance of ringland failure
Carboncrossroads actually it’s not. UEL’s weren’t introduced until the 90’s, and real WRC cars have never used UEL’s due to there inefficiency. JDM WRX’s and STi’s haven’t had UEL’s since 2003....
great comparison! I like how you split it it up, definitely made it much easier to hear the difference. and from the looks of it, you made some noticeable gains in power.
I love the rumble but I don't hate the equal lengths as much as thought I would. Someday down the line when my mods get as far as yours I'll probably do the same. Thanks for another good video Ben.
This video is exactly what I needed, especially the speed run at the end!! Def getting EL headers, not only for the sound but also the performance advantages. I'm running the stock headers with 3" piping all the way down and the low-end rumble shakes everything in the 200m radius when I start it in the morning :/
Came to leave my thank you's for making a nice comparison vid and was made even more happy by seeing others leaving their appreciation as well. nice vid man, thanks!
I have a 2011 STI sedan with a downpipe and single exit catback exhaust and my Subie it’s kinda loud. I’ll always run UEL because of the sound. That Subie rumble is second to none. I love to hear my car from the outside because when you’re always driving it, you get the internal sound. Once you hear your car from the outside, it is the best thing ever.
LIKE everyone else said best comparison ever finally some one shows before and after seconds apart. ITs perfect and a nice sound thing is you need to hear it in person its a lot diffrent
I like the rumble of the unequal headers, it's very assertive. However, the equal is actually quite refined and sounds pretty loud, even if it isn't as badass. But is it really true unequal headers are negative in terms of performance? If that's true I wouldn't mind trading the sound for good performance. After all, kicking ass in a Subi would be better than just sounding like a Subi.
Un-equal is the best IMO. I would never want to get rid of that boxer rumble. It's very unique to those cars and sounds so sexy. I used to own a Scion TC with Catback exhaust. you just made your subie sound like one. or a honda for that matter. but in the end it's all about what you like. good video.
There are basicaly two reasons to buy a subie over an evo: 1) The AWD system 2) The sound. Why would you fuck up that eargasmic sound to get a miniscule amount of power and efficiency?
Equal length gives me track vibes. Since most boxer engines are running equal length in racing due to their better top end power. Then the subie rumble ones give me street car vibes. Your typical bolt on, tune with some clean wheels kind of build. To each their own but I like how the equal length almost sounds like a k series Honda screaming at 8000rpm down a straight.
this is the GREATEST comparison video i have ever seen!!!! well done man! Also love the sound .... been thinking about switching over to Equal lenght headers... still has that subi sound but more even. Also just wanted to say ur car is super clean i love it. OTS tune or custom?
yeah, nice video comparison. I think I like unequal sound better, but when you were getting on the throttle with the equal length headers it sounded pretty damn good. my only criticism would be I think the dual pipes look best as the rear bumper cover is made for dual pipes, but I know that there are a lot of performance exhausts for the 2008+ models that use a single exhaust for better flow so its definitely understandable. Nice lookin WRX all around though man.
I run some equal length headers on my 1.8t a4 and I can say that the performance difference here is really what happened. And my stock manifold wasn't even that "unequal". Gotta say tho, both my car and this one sound soooo much more aggressive and sporty than they did with the stock pipes
both sound amazing love the volume and tone in cab on the equal length header for sure but i still cant get over that un equal length header sound great video and great quality you sir deserve the like im about to give
Nicely done video. This is rare to see direct comparisons for automotive hardware. The debate between equal and unequal length on Subarus is eternal, but this provides a great side by side view of the options. Nicely done. Personal preference: equal length, but I like the smoother sound. Mind you I'm saying this as a guy with a stock unequal length header. I think tuned has a more professional perception to it as do the power gains from better choices(unequal or equal).
Speaking purely sound, stock unequal headers win hands down. Performance wise, I dunno, but many are making the switch due to claims of better performance. Swapping out that header now makes that ej sounds just like the fa20 dit
Good filming. Like how you compare them and you go back and forth between the two. Unequal sounds a thousand times better. Is there a power gain with equal length headers? I'd be willing to give up some power just to have the boxer rumble.
Jordan Fraser Subaru ones?? I have never seen one like that. In fact I went to a road rally yesterday and saw 2 group A subarus, 2 group N and 1 WRC and they all sounded like unequal lenght. All the ones I have seen the engine in all the rallys i've seen were unequal lenght
interesting. totally like the unequals better, as it emphasizes the uniqueness of the boxer motor, but the editing of the comparisons is really really great, bravo for a good comparison video
Great video. You thought of everything editing wise. Really helpful. Thank you. Did you retune after mounting the EL headers? And was there a noticeable boost in power?
very nice video the best one i have seen by far. exactly what i was looking for. i have the Ti-C turbo back catless on my 06 wrx and was looking a buying some headers for my next mod. i am sold on the Invidia Equal Length Race Header now. i see that you have the Invidia Catless Downpipe. I am running the Greddy down pipe i hope the sound quality will be the same as yours. Very nice video.
Christ man, Imagine when Subaru first started their Boxer 3 engine the first time with the 4x UEL pips on the header, and heard this f*cking sound... It's the sound of a generation, maybe a few generations.
I'm usually not a fan of EL headers but this set up sounds really nice. I love the Subaru rumble and willing to compromise some performance for a nice aggressive growl, especially because a lot of wrx's I've heard with EL headers sound like Hondas but this sounds pretty good.
As a 2009 STi owner with a Q300 / catted DP, I've been entertaining the idea of going ELH ... So I have a quick question. Did the reduction in the rumble/boom by going ELH, make driving at highway speeds more comfortable? Currently, I find the boom quite obnoxious, even under medium throttle load, not to mention full open (mostly low to medium rpm). And does the car appear to sound louder from the outside thanks to extra raspiness? Thanks!
-couldn't tell power increase from the vids, also several factors can affect performance on any given day -both headers can sound good depending on exhaust but the EL usually sound more generic -UEL if you want people to look up to wonder what car is coming up the road, EL if you're main goal in life is to get a few more ponies than your neighbor
Do you have any numbers to compare the power output differences? BTW, the car sounds absolutely sick with the invidia headers. :D I'm dutifully jealous.
THIS IS HOW YOU COMPARE PARTS, best comparison video ever.
I just wanted to say this is the best exhaust comparison I've ever seen of anything. well done
+Dented Yota Totally agree. Still cant decide to stay with my Invidia Unequal or splurge and go equal length though ;-P
I agree too! Very well done. Wish others could use this as a template.
literally said the same exact thing lmao. dope video man
Right? Straight to the point right after search terms! Thank fuck! I get so tired of hearing some knob talk about his life and daily driver for the first 10 mins of a video of they even get to demonstrating what their title mentions at all.
no talking just straight to what we came to see 👍🏼
so the equal length headers make it sound like an evo...
haha
+Marco WY i thought the same thing lol
+Marco WY OR basically any 4 banger turbo lol. But it makes more power for sure.
EL headers sounds better than a UEL to me. I hate the broken engine sound from a UEL headers
equal length headers make it sound like an engine with equal length headers..
The performance benefits of equal-length headers can be heard.
+Samniss Arandeen liked due to Jeb
Couldn’t agree more just watching his acceleration part the car seems so much more free revving
I mean, he also went from stock to performance aftermarket lol
@@nthgth that’s true 😂 😂
i hate to stay i lovee the unequal length headers, just more deep and beautiful and shit
BrokeDudes Garage reading ur comment in my head it sounded like the guy from thatwasepic. lol
honestly the unequal headers sound better to me lol
Cameron Coll same
Exactly
The unequal length headers defiantly sound better but you go equal length to help with cylinder cooling and overall performance, generally speaking from a daily/street application going equal length is unnecessary for the little bit of power change but In a true high power racing scenario equal length is needed

In my opinion the Stock Unequal Length Headers is the "signature" (to say like that) of a Subaru.
Seems to pull harder with equal length but loosing that rumble is a blasphemy
Agreed, but remember, that was also an upgrade from stock to performance aftermarket headers... Of course it pulls harder
Porsches are equal length flat engines
Bryan Liguori yea I agree, if it was performance unequal like mine, the difference in pulls would be close to none. It most likely would pull the same
But MO POWa BABY
Blasphemy 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂
By far one of the best comparison videos I've ever seen
This was probably the most well put together comparison video I've seen.
UEL headders all the way!
It just sounds better
At least to me :)
I completely agree. You may get more power out of EL headers but it gets rid of the beautiful gargle that is Subaru
Brian Robinson yeah i like the stock more with the boxer rumble;)
Brian Robinson they sound like wet farts with unequal.
that exhaust system sounds like a giant wet fart anyway, terrible system.
Barry Barentsen that response just shows me that you're not a Subaru fan so why would you even bother posting any comments?

If you're talking shit I have a 2.7 k24 that is a monster built by drag cartel, it sounds pretty fucking good if you ask me

Awesome comparison vid. This is how all comp videos should be. Thank you for your time.
word dude. that sound is part of what makes subarus so cool.
Equal length sounds so much better! Unequal makes it sound broken, with a misfire.
UEL all day! I just like the boxer rumble. I do like the sound of the EL when opened up tho! Nice Whip bro!
they both sound sick in their own way. love them both.
Really good video dude.
Great comparison vid, like others have said. I didn't notice any difference in acceleration in the pulls but you can definitely hear the difference.
That el header sounds so crisp and cleannnnnnnn oh mah gawd
Have you seen the new nbr challenge sti? Sounds exactly like the one with el headers.
Quick and to the point without a bunch of opinionated narrator talk no one cares to hear... PERFECT
Thats is the new standarts for comparisons videos
Great video. You thought of everything editing wise. Really helpful. Thank you. Did you retune after mounting the EL headers? And was there a noticeable boost in power?

I wonder what else was done to that car. It sounded fraggin' awesome with everything, especially at the end. Nice video.

@Billy Hudson ... you are right its actually the firing order of the cylinders coupled with the way the headers were made that makes the rumble.
Really well done video man!
Awesome stuff. Thanks.
thanks, this is a great rapid-fire comparison. am considering the Invidia Race ELH upgrade from stock.
What a lovely Straight forward informative video. Thanks, Subscribed.
-couldn't tell power increase from the vids, also several factors can affect performance on any given day
-both headers can sound good depending on exhaust but the EL usually sound more generic
-UEL if you want people to look up to wonder what car is coming up the road, EL if you're main goal in life is to get a few more ponies than your neighbor
The stock sounds so much better, it is unreal. IMHO
I'm guessing there was a re-tune after the elh and other parts. You could tell it's faster from the pulls
Do you have any numbers to compare the power output differences? BTW, the car sounds absolutely sick with the invidia headers. :D I'm dutifully jealous.
Alright, this has me convinced I can make my Civic sound exactly like a WRX with some UEL headers. Time to find or fabricate some!
I’m ok with losing a few ponies.. nothing like hearing the Subi exhaust through the uel headers
Great video!
It looked like it pulled harder with the elh? Or that might have just been my imagination.
yea it did pull harder with the elh
Mike Coleman it did and will. 25 whp and around 50 wtq gains when switching to a EL header!!
With EL headers it sounds like a normal straight 4 but just a bit more rhaspy. Very nice 👌
The EL sounds awesome during the pull.
What BOV? Sounds gorgeous.
Is it just me or did the EL headers give the car a bit more torque? Or maybe different gears during both pulls?
Engine breathes better, smoother and depending on your car frees up about 15-25HP
inside cabin with the EL sounds sick
Equal length sounds way better imo sounds clean and refined plus good performance gains
Nice comparison, very well done.
As for the sound, I think I would prefer the stock headers.
People for UEL headers: "HURRDURR MY WAARBL RUMBLE SOUNDS"
People for EL headers "HUURRRDURR MY FAAARTCAN HONDA SOUNDS"
The UEL sound is iconic. Why get rid of it?
