The mic may not pickup equal but from what I can hear unequal has a unique sound that sets it further apart from v8, v6s consistent sound which I like. Choppy exhausts sound great to me. Cammed i4, subarus, straight 6 turbod. All sound great.
I personally like the uel headers cause it just give the car a distinct and unique sound.
The EL headers sounded better here. I wonder if you had an aftermarket UEL setup would it have sounded a bit louder and as clean as the EL. EL headers are slowly growing on me but I’ll keep the boxer rumble just a bit longer.
I finally made the decision to go Equal Length (Tomei Expreme). So now in running a Tomei El Header, 3 bolt Grimm speed EWG with Tial 38mm Wastegate, Tomei Expreme Catless DP, Tomei Expreme Ti Turboback. The sound is incredible, but the big difference is on the dyno!!! Just adding the EL Header and obviously revising the protune, I made an additional 31 awhp!!!! The EJ motors run so much healthier with the EL system. Anyone ever wonder why Subaru's in Japan never came with UEL Header? They sound cool, but that's about it.

Glass-Man-252 couldn’t agree more with you. My biggest regret with my subie when I had it was not going EL’s. EL’s, aftermarket oil cooler and good protune and your Subaru will run for many many many miles on nothing but routine oil changes and filling the gas tank :) everyone I’ve talked too also stated how the EL’s made the car far more eager to rev out which is always a plus lol.

The EL still has a bit of a rumble to it. It almost makes me want to get it
I prefer equal-length. The sound is less intrusive in the cabin (I'm old, and I care about such things :P), they have numerous mechanical benefits which have been detailed in other comments, and they sound like an old Porsche or Corvair, which I just love.
But hey, if you love UEL, more power to you.
If I wanted equal length, I would have gotten an EVO :P .

I prefer unequal length headers but the equal length setup shown in this video is the best exhaust setup i've heard for equal length. Most videos I watch on equal length subarus sound like a honda.

Willy bman it’s not bad, it’s just not as good. Think about it like upgrade brakes from stock, factory ones will work just fine but upgraded ones will work that much better

Went EL never went back. With a tune the response is so much more significant. Cars still loud as hell lol just doesnt sound like its choking like on UEL
I'd do it for that alone, but it also sounds better. Rumble is nice at low RPMs, otherwise not so much.

I have been wanting EL headers however have been hesitant per the comments I hear on it sounding tinny or rice... Thanks for making this video because to me on your cars the EL headers are way better sounding than the UEL. Your black STI sounds awesome. I love my Subaru however have never been a fan of the UEL sound. Time to place an order!

Do you muffle your EWG dump tube at all? I have heard mixed reviews on liking the sound. Your car sounded awesome, maybe attributed to the ELH like you said.

I always used to the el sounded like rice. BUT since owning a 16 WRX with factory EL I have to say I would almost now prefer it. then again I am coming from an Evo lol

EL headers sound heaps better, and make better power not to mention UEL sound like youve taken a coil pack out of one of the cylinders and make the engines sound like they rev less and everyones subaru sounds the same with UEL honestly

OCTurboJoe power is almost unchanged. And actually the UEL header spools the turbo faster. Not many people know that. Engineers went for that specifically.
sean kelly and that’s where you are wrong. Single scroll setup on Killer B EL’s saw a gain of 26 whp and 50 ft lbs torque over ported UEL’s.... that’s a fairly significant power bump lol. The Killer B’s also spooled the stock turbo over 500 rpm sooner and torque comes on very hard and strong, while making better power top end. UEL’s only advantage is the shorter runners allow slightly, and I mean slightly, better transient response, which is often mistaken as spool... but with EL’s you can run a twin scroll setup which has far superior response and spool time. EL’s are a proper setup, as a engineer myself, we always strive for the most efficient designs. Efficiency in flow equates directly to superior performance. Drive them back to back, the EL car feels like it’s been freed of restriction...
Although I love your car, I have to say unequal length is the way to go if you want to keep the true Subaru sounds

I have both on Stage 2+ and I prefer the uel perrin header. Sounds like a crazy bumblebee and the performance is also okay. (El is a little bit better) but if you run twinscroll you have to use el (you everytime should remember edm and usdm are not compareable to jdm)

We're about to find out. Went with EL on my efr 7670 rotated build that should be done at the tuner soon! EL sounds amazing to me, people that day it doesn't sound like a Subaru anymore...it's different, sure, but the cylinders are still massively oversquare. I still hear Subaru all day on EL. Wouldn't know which other engine to compare it to anyway. 🤷♂️
Honda i think is the engine you are looking for. EL make the STI sound like a K series. You can have my 20 to 30 hp i will keep the UEL.
My 02 wrx has unequal for now, but because I got the EWG, VF39, STI injector, 6 speed drivetrain swap, I may go with the EL from Killer B get an open source retune and keep it like that.

What's that fluttering noise when they're going under boost? You can especially hear it on the ELH black car.

@@thisisflake_ You're right. After watching some other videos it seems to happen because of an electronic boost controller which constantly makes adjustments, hence the flutter. Strangely, haven't heard this on any other car...
a5m that constant flutter sound is from the wastegate dump, it’s super loud from outside the car typically haha, that’s while you’ll see 2 pipes coming out of a hood on turbo Hondas and stuff, one pipe is exhaust off the turbo, other pipe wastegate dump, sometimes it can be as loud or louder than the exhaust itself

Just got me some uel japspeed headers as i wanted a more subaru sound on my 06 sti but mainly because of heat distribution making the top mount intercooler less prone to heat soak a point noone ever seems to make when trying to decide between uel or el
