  • Join me at Glen Echo park as I review the pros and cons of using a Hasselblad V film camera with a Phase One digital back. Is this the perfect combination for the money? What do the images look like? Check it out and let me know if you have any questions about this combination!

    your issue @ 11:42 has an easy fix, these backs have what is called a "shutter latency" setting, so they can be used in mechanical cameras, like this and view /technical cameras, this works by allowing the 'wake-up' signal to be made via a one shot cable, or by a two shot cable ( a sync cable with a button on one socket plug)- this wakes up the back, giving you ~5 seconds to fire the shutter ( but you need to set the shutter setting in the back menu to LONG latency first!!), your best source of info is the Phase One web site, look under support, then find the digital back section, the P22/33/45 /P+ back user manuals are there, they are LONG winded, BUT at the rear section, after the how to use chapters, is sections dealing with this exact issue, connection/ sync with various electronic/manual cameras, this includes a picture of each cable needed, menu setup for syncing with it, including sync with flashes, caverts with this setup, ie what menus & settings are compatable with this camera pairing, viewfinder masks needed and plenty more!

    I bought a P25+ about 8 years ago and I love the image quality. There is something unique about these "fat pixel" CCD sensor backs. A couple of pros you didn't mention include the lack of an anti-aliasing filter and a dynamic range of almost 13 stops. These make for sharp images and I never have to bracket my shots. You mentioned losing 1 in 20 shots? I'm shooting with a Phase One DF body, and after more than 2K exposures I've never lost a shot. So I think this is an anomaly, not typical for these backs.

    I'm surprised about the noise comments. The older Phase backs were honestly only meant to be shot at thier native ISO, which is ISO 50 on that back, or 100 in a pinch. and with the + technology they are almost noiseless at ISO 50. But need a tripod and longer exposures. Its a limiting setup for most, but can be amazing for the price. Thanks for posting about it, I'm going to have to charge up my batteries and give mine a go!

      Hi Stephen, you make a great point about what our expectations should be regarding noise levels on these older backs. It really is a studio/tripod camera that you can occasionally get decent shots handheld under ideal lighting/subject situations as well.

    Hi Nathan, thanks for this informative overview! One question though: Can I change the adapter on the back so that I could use one back with different cams or is the adapter build in? Thanks!

    Bought a P1+Leaf Aptus 22 last year, hope it will last forever......still got a Sony A7ii, and no need for the newer version after trying recent CMOS camera, even the Fujy GFX. Used as it should, studio or slow photography, this old fat-pixels-CCD are simply amazing, even by today standard.

      I had the GFX as well for a while but sold it because it wasn't enjoyable to use. Too many buttons and everything felt very sterile. It's really the opposite experience of shooting with a 500 camera.

    I own a P25+ which I've been using with the H2 film body for almost 2 decades and although I also own an H5Dc 50mp I sometimes shoot with the P25+ because of the "look" especially when I don't need that huge file size the H5Dc produces. More importantly my clients never know the difference! When I print both files look amazing but there is something about the CCD sensor on the P25+ digital back. True, the batteries suck!

    Thanks for the great review. I was thinking about trying to get one of these or else the P45. Have you any thoughts on the p45 back?

    • @nathanhirschphotography871
      @nathanhirschphotography871  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks, Cormac! The p45 would be a great choice though they will be more expensive than the p25. I don't personally need the extra pixels but if you plan on doing a lot of printing then I'd recommend the p45 or you can always go crazy with the massive sensor p65! :)

    Can we get a technical video on the iso performance, going through the menu, etc? Just to give an idea of what to expect when we purchase something similar?

    • @nathanhirschphotography871
      @nathanhirschphotography871  3 роки тому

      Hi Wilson, I will do at least one more review on this setup. I don't know how helpful an overview of the menu would be as there isn't a whole lot to adjust, other than the ISO and some items related to tether capture. You can set white balance but honestly the Auto white balance is excellent.

  • @DiegoTerze

    Hi, how are you? Nice to greet you, my name is Diego, I am a photographer from Argentina, first of all, sorry for bothering you.
    I have a Hasselblad 500 C/M that belonged to my grandfather and I would like to put a digital back on it, I see you configured with a Pahase One P25, it is really something simple to configure? in Argentina there is no labor specialized if something complex had to be done to get it up and running and I don't want to spend that money on something that can't probably work, could you please tell me briefly about it, thank you very much and greetings from the very warmth of Buenos Aires.
