    Thank god I found this. This is possibly the single best camera review I have ever seen. I had almost written off this camera but now I see that what other reviewers were saying was, essentially, “it’s not my DSLR” (or mirror less same same equivalent). I don’t want a DSLR. I’ve got a perfectly ordinary Nikon. I want something that makes me learn and makes me think.

    • @bthemedia
      @bthemedia 4 роки тому

      KWC Coin good point, so in “live view” I understand a rolling shutter effect happens as the scene is constantly scanned/refreshed. So would compose & focus in live view, then switch to WLF view to watch and wait to capture the ‘decisive moment’ to trip the shutter. I would still love to see someone walk through this process in a video!

    • @ianatkinson6367
      @ianatkinson6367 4 роки тому +1

      @@bthemedia It's quite simple, set the camera to B open the shutter and hold the shutter open (either with a cable release or finger) switch to live view, compose, focus 100% and release the shutter, switch from live view. With a V system camera you are more likely to use Mechanical shutter unless of course you keep the shutter open manually. I think you can see me doing this around 9.47 in the video.

    It is reassuring to see that high end equipment deliver as promised. They cost a huge amount of money, so expectations are high. Would Ansel Adams use a digital Hasselblad if he were alive? The answer is absolutely, but I doubt if he would have been amused at all with all the Image creation software that have now accompanied the digital bandwagon. Great presentation.

    by the way this statement @ 2:59 is correct, that the xcd lens is the smallest format system, as ALL xcd systems are 6 x 4.5 cm in size !! - only the original V & H systems are 6 x 6 cm ! this is also why the new body has an X in the name!!-even though it fits V system bodies, but the CAMERA end, is 6 X 4.5 cm image circle (the distance from sensor/ film plane to lens mount is so small; in the V / H systems there is a mirror mechanics to account for, so lenses are designed to focus at different distance).

    • @ianatkinson6367
      @ianatkinson6367 4 роки тому +1

      I have no idea what the image circle of the XCD lenses are other than they cover the 43 x 32mm sensor. If they cover 6cm circle I would be surprised, if they do it would suggest that they are considering a full frame 6x6.45 (53x40. 120 film is 6cm wide but there is a rebate which makes 53mm full frame) back in this system, which I would doubt due the increased costs!
      I think the xcd wide lenses are similar to my wide Rodenstock's which retro focus, i.e a 50mm at infinity wouldn't be 50mm from the nodal point, but closer due to being mirrorless.

    The very best review by of one version of a Hasselblad 50mp camera and and XCD 3.5/45mm lens. I have the X1D Mark II with the smaller 45P lens and would love to know how what you think of the 907X vs X1d which has an excellent EVF but no tilting LCD screen . I assume image quality would be similar if not identical but maybe not if Hasselblad made adjustments to the imaging. Also, as a lifetime large format landscape photographer (Linholf 4x5) I agree Ansel would have been impressed. Thank you Ian.

    This was fascinating! It was great to see photos made with those two cameras that I have never had any experience with. I have found that the X1D-II body with native XCD lenses give the best resolution of fine detail close to wide open. At f/16 they are way softer than at f/4 or f/5.6. Something to experiment with if you still have the camera.Also, this was a terrific first review video. Keep them coming if you enjoy making these!

    • @ianatkinson2255
      @ianatkinson2255 3 роки тому +1

      I only did a small test of the XCD lenses and I don't have the camera to test now. All lenses have issues with diffraction towards the smaller apertures. I find most digital lenses work best at around f8/f11. Wide open will often have a slight softening towards the edges depending on the quality of the glass, but I don't always see this as a major disadvantage, unless shooting landscapes and who shoots landscapes wide open?

      @@ianatkinson6367 Thank you for the reply. I bought a CFV 16 many years ago - my most expensive single photography purchase. I was somewhat disappointed with the performance first of all, suspecting that it was not focussing on the sensor properly but assumed it was me. I took advantage of a Hasselblad 'offer' to get my camera equipment checked out resulting in extra cost due to a scratch on the sensor (no idea how that happened) and lenses needing to be serviced. It was touch-and-go whether I would sell off the equipment and cut my losses but I decided to go for the service and restore my equipment. In another check-up I found that my sensor had mound growing underneath the filter - once again no idea how that happened. When I retired I hoped to be able to buy a CFV 50 back but my lump sum did not come through while they were on offer, and then they were discontinued! Hoping to cash in on a further injection of cash following my wife's retirement I was hoping to get the 'new' back but that took so long to come out that I have spent the money elsewhere. I looked at the X-Series when it came out and was tempted but I have so much invested in Canon and Panasonic digital systems that it did not make sense. The reviews I have seen of the 907X 50C (including yours) have once again piqued my interest. Maybe one day! Best Wishes for a Happy Christmas (whatever you are able to do) and a Safe New Year.

    Excellent ‘first outing’ on the other side of the camera! That back really has caught my eye and I think this shows off really well how good it is to slow down on a shoot. The current trend of 20fps ‘spray and pray’ is not my way of working and this feels almost as good as running a roll of Provia through an A12 back. The only thing missing with the digital back is the dark slide... but at least you can’t lose it ;-) Look forward to your next production.

I primarily work as a cinematographer now and have been considering this camera for my still image work and was curious how this back/camera would perform across the different Hasselbads and lenses I'm considering so it was nice to see this demonstration from in the field to an actual print. I really enjoyed your personal photographs in the beginning as well. I tried the fuji gfx system and liked it but the 50r didn't feel different enough from the full-frame digital cameras I have to warrant the cost so maybe it's time to try this camera!

    It’s nice to see I’m not the only one who likes glass with character. Having worked with 503cw’s, the CFE 120mm Makro is still my favourite lens ever.
    I use Canon now, but with their mirrorless options getting close to the 907x, I am tempted to switch….

    Very nice review...you did very well for the first time! I like the simplistic approach to the comparative view of the three cameras. I have the 503CW and look forward to get sometime soon the 907X 50c kit. Also I have a Chamonix 45H1 and are looking for a “V” back plate to be able to use the 50c digital back. Well done Ian, thank you! Be safe...Cheers.

    What a wonderful review. What was the focal length on the Linhof ? The focal length and f/stop of 16 at the same distance and how the lens was oriented to the film plane may explain some of the depth of field differences. All in all a nice review. I don't know how much Ansel Adams would have used the sensor in reference to color, but he could tweak the convert the images to black and white and create what he would have wanted.

      Hi Harry, We shot with 50mm on the Linhof and also the 503, 45mm on the 907x. We kept the tripod in the same place for the two 50's and I moved slightly closer for the 45mm. (Show more above has all the details). So the plane should be in exactly the same placeI was lucky enough to study fine art black and white printing in New York with one of AA's old assistants who used to drop his name in to conversation as if it was Billy from down the pub. I enjoyed his anecdotes about his draws full of light meters and every tech you could imagine. I'm convinced he would have loved digital medium format.

      4:45 and 17:25 I was trying to understand the difference in depth of field also... 45mm (on 907x) would be slightly deeper than 50mm, and CFE 50mm (on 503cw) just appears to be softer/less sharp? The Rodenstock Digaron lens on the Linhof is AMAZING.

    • @ianatkinson6367
      @ianatkinson6367 4 роки тому +2

      @@bthemedia I think it's just a characteristic and historic nature of the CFi which were obviously designed for film. The Rodenstock lenses are amazing, I have lots of Schneider/phase glass which are very good but the only thing that comes close to the Rodenstock's are the Leica SL Apo's, in my testing that is!

    @5:03 On the 503CW did you prefocus 9:47 with the digital back in live view, then view/shoot using the WLF or touch screen? Would love to see that workflow some time. Ps- nice timestamp! 👌😆

    • @bthemedia
      @bthemedia 4 роки тому

      Looks like 9:02 and 9:07 timestamp also work for the 907x mention

    • @ianatkinson6367
      @ianatkinson6367 4 роки тому +2

      Hi, I did prefocus in live view on the 503. I tend not to look through the view finder when I shoot on a tripod, I find I have better interaction with my subject when I look over the camera. I also tend to do my focusing with live view as I find it much easier to get accurate focus at 100%.
      The 9.07 is when I was shooting with the Linhof, which obviously doesn't have a viewfinder.

    Well done sir. A very useful review. It's interesting to see the warm color balance with the Zeiss and Rodenstock lenses. I assume this is due to the lens coating and the 907X / Phocus portraying a neutral rendition.

    Excellent review! I do think the prints reveal far more about the lenses used than about the sensor itself. Did anyone see which Rodenstock lens was chosen for the LF shots? It would have been interesting to see how the Zeiss 60mm Distagon and 100mm Planar would perform on the 500 Hasselblad. Apologies!! I found the info in the notes at the bottom. THANKS!

    • @ianatkinson6367
      @ianatkinson6367 4 роки тому +1

      Thanks Joe, you are correct about the lenses and the prints, I think I make the point at the end that we have a fair idea of how good modern sensors are and certainly at 50mp they are more forgiving in rendering an image. I think that is why I was interested in the feel of the lenses as much as how good the sensor is. I did enjoy the functionality of the back, live view in particular. I think when we reach 100mp in this system we might start to see some flaws in older lenses.

    Nicely done. The idea that I can take my dormant pelican of HB gear and bridge at reasonable cost to modern AF lenses is very attractive. I wonder if the XCD lenses have image circles that cover a 6x6 sensor? It might show HBs sensor plan? I'd love to keep the 38mm SWC shooting shooting superwide. Long live V System!
