While I appreciate the craftsmanship and love poured into this album, I would so much rather listen to their original music. Phillip, like they have said before, they can all "shred", but they would rather create something that is somehow better together than anything they individually play. Hardcore Punch Brothers fan, however, considering the fact that Punch Brothers have not garnered a foothold in mainstream media, they might have rather used one of their older, infectious tunes like "i blew it off", or "who's feeling young now?"
Similarly, appearances of nickel Creek on popular media shows are mishandled, and the least accessible of their music is performed. It goes way over a general crowd's head.
As a perfect example, why would you not perform the song called "Destination", when you want to turn people on to the band nickel Creek? The tiny desk performance, where sarah is almost in tears during that wonderful song, is a lodestone of music history.
Punch Brothers are pretty much the best thing out there. I just hate misappropriation of showcase. They have better, more accessible music for a general audience.
To elevate the general understanding of fine arts is paramount. People need bite sized pieces, though. Most people are not cabaret, studio musicians. They don't understand melodic theory, time, key, or measure. They just want a groove.
Punch Brothers really plays for other aspiring musicians. Or why would they work so hard?
As beautiful as this song is, the incredible virtuosity it displays is not for the squeamish, virgins of PB's sound.
