  • I want to give you some field guide tips on how to spot old mines and mining activity so you can find great locations to rockhound. This is an old copper mine that I located in the Superstition Mountains of Arizona. All of these tips can be applied to any location, but are specific to the Arizona region.
    Many minerals and gemstones cannot be recovered by merely finding them on the surface. The only way to access certain minerals is to find an old mine and sift through the tailings.
    I have spent many years researching and exploring rockhounding locations and old mines and have learned many tips on how to help beginner rockhounds find good spots to find minerals, gemstones, crystals, and gold.
    In this video, I focus on an old copper mine I came across while hiking. I was able to read the signs that mining activity had occurred, and sure enough I discovered an old mine!
    I find turquoise, chrysocolla, azurite, and malachite right on the surface of the tailings of the old mine. I teach you some interesting facts about copper minerals.

    Love your content, it appears that you are from the Cochise county area. My wife and I would enjoy getting together with you and your man to spend a day in the Dragoons exploring some old Mine sites I know about and you might also. We have a toy also so getting around would not be a problem. I can see the Dragoons from my place in Tombstone. Beautiful area to live in.

      I just love the Dragoons! I went rockhounding there for the first time recently, didn't find too much, but I know there are awesome locations out there. Thanks for watching my vids! You can email me at rusticskills.com

      I'm glad you liked the vid! I haven't done much exploring there and I am now back at home in Cochise County. But if you send me an email at my website Rustic Skills I will give you the coordinates to that location!

    First thought seeing the title: Whoa! I hope you address the fact old mines can become your unintentional grave really easy. Even if you have really good equipment you still could find you done screwed up and remorse sets in in a split second.

      I could rattle off a safety disclaimer every time I make an exploration video.

    Omg so awesome! I can't wait to start doing this. I purchased some land about an hour east of Tombstone and I'll be moving down there in a couple months.

      Nice! So you must be around the Dragoons then. I am 20 minutes west of Tombstone. I know all the good rockhounding spots round here!

      @@RusticSkills I'm close to Elfrida and McNeal. Are there good rockhounding and exploring opportunities in the Dragoons?

      @@Thomas-jq2im Big time. There is a ton of old mines in the Dragoons. Sounds like your pretty remote in that area, what is your off grid gameplan?

    • @Thomas-jq2im
      @Thomas-jq2im Рік тому

      @@RusticSkills well for starters the game plan is to do the trailer living thing, solar with generator supplementation. Haul small amounts of water with a trailer and haul black water to the dump station. Do laundry in town. Make money from glassblowing (yes I know it's going to be a major energy suck, but I don't have much else in energy needs. I've already been accustomed to blistering Tucson summers with little a/c and vehicles with no a/c. The area my land is at doesn't get as hot as Tucson thankfully.

      Yes Cochise County is cooler than most areas in AZ. Sounds like a solid gameplan to get started. I hauled water for the first six months and it sucked but I made due. So you must have your own glass blowing equipment? I've always wanted to try glass blowing.
