Rockhounding in Arizona! In Search of Chrysocolla, Azurite, Turquoise

- Join us as we go spelunking and rockhounding thru old copper mines of Arizona. We dig thru tailings full of minerals and gems!
We are taking a trip into Mine Canyon, an old copper mining district in Southeast Arizona. The terrain is so rough, we have to take the RZR to get to the mines.
In one tailing dump, we rockhound and discover Azurite, Turquoise, Chrysocolla, and even Malachite.
We then venture into the old abandoned mine shaft where we find copper veins and quartz crystals.
It's a fun trip and is pretty exciting, especially if you are a rockhound, like us!

good stuff,
thank you for sharing your time and knowledge
I am glad you enjoyed!
That was fun to watch. I have always liked rockhounding.
try muriatic acid on those quartz points..it cleans the iron off and wont harm the quartz
Thanks for the tip. I couldn't get it off so I will definitely try that!
Just found your page. I really enjoyed the rock hounding. Can't wait for more
Thank you! We have expeditions planned, right now we are going off grid so we will have those vids coming out, but more rockhounding soon as the weather warms up!
The two of you are a such a wonderful blessing:) I'm a new subscriber, and I just I think you guys rock! Tee hee hee.... I love listening to the the pure, heartfelt and joyous excitement each time that you find one of these beautiful treasures, Your love for each other, and your spirit of gratitude shines so brightly! Thank you so much for this & favor to you;)
Wow, thank you so much for your wonderful comment! I'm glad you enjoyed our video, as you know it takes a lot of effort to make them. I love your channel as well and am touched by your dog rescue. I have subscribed. We will be coming out with more exploration vids soon!
Chrysocolla/gem silica and chrysoprase are my favorite stones 😍 what a cool adventure!
Ty! I'm planning to stabilize the mineral and do some cabbing one day 😉
That was awesome to watch! I know where you are but I just can't climb vertical anymore LOL! I'm sure there is so much else to be found around that area! Have fun, I'll be watching❤
There is a vast amount of amazing things to find just in my area, let alone all of Arizona. I am glad you are enjoying my content!
Appreciate your “real” video. Hounding is effort but rewards can’t be beat.
Thanks! It is a lot of hard work, not mentioning the hours I spend researching to find the places to go. More to come!
Looks like a nice adventure, lots to look at. 🤙
It sure was fun thanks! More to come.
Azurite and malachite travel together and carry copper. Some of the green maybe malachite.
You are very right! Turquoise, Chrysocolla, Azurite, and Malachite all come from copper minerals and can cohabitate!
You’re so cool! Love it thank you
Epic finds enjoyed watching
Amazing specimens
Keep making them I’d have a huge collection but I am not organized, plus looks like you guys really enjoy it, much ❤️
Ty ty! I'm glad you enjoyed the vid. I have so many locations mapped out and not enough time to explore them! But will soon.... Working on building our off grid ranch right now.
Màke more, I live ÀZ and gemstones are everywhere
They sure are and knowing where to look for them helps a whole lot. I do plan on making more az rockhounding vids so stay tuned!
Love me some blues, greens and clear crystals for sure!! But that going up path - id still be resting.... and grabbing whatever I could by stretching out for!! Wwhheeewww!!! Where's my water bottle? Thanks for taking some video time!!
Yep that path is a humdinger, I do about a 7 mile round trip to this location, all on foot! But the hunt is worth it. Happy New Year!
Fantastic. I am from Seattle and am currently in Jerome, AZ hunting the tailings and it such a blast to explore. Thanks for sharing your experience! Any hints to the road into that wilderness? I just may head that way next.
Yes make more rock videos, just subscribed
Welcome aboard! More rockhounding videos in the making 🤠
You have Azurite, Malachite and Chrysocolla there. You can cab up Azurite actually, it takes an awesome polish. Generally you should look for the more massive forms of Azurite / Malachite with bright blues if your gonna cut it. You have some cute specimens there but if you find a vein and jackhammer out the weathered material in the first 6in you stand a good chance of hitting solid massive formations of Malachite with Azurite that could be great for cutting.
Oh wow this is a great tip! What kind of power tool do you recommend for the hammering besides a jack hammer?
This particular stuff I was finding was more of a stain but there were some decent silicated pieces inside some of the rock, I really want to get more into lapidary, really just a matter of time and tools. Any advice for starter lapidary tools?
I'm honing in on a spot that I'm hoping for more massive silicated pieces, coming out soon......
Way cool.
ty ty ty
Looks like the material at my claim. I thought it was turquoise for a couple weeks too. I did find veins and nodules if you want to see what it looks like in situ.
I thought it was turquoise at first as well, but it's more of a silica chrysocola blend I think. New to this type of mineral. I'd be interested to see your stuff! You can send me pics to Regina@maximumoffgrid.com.
Somebody told me to use denture cleaning tablets and I have a very large chunk of opal that was very very dirty and I put probably 20 or 30 maybe 35 tablets in the tub and soaked it overnight and it came out at least 80 to 90% clean
This is actually a great tip and I will be trying this very soon!
That coating on your Quartz is Caliche Which in short is desert concrete. If you want to remove it from the Quartz you can do so with diluted sulfuric acid. You can get it online or at an auto parts store as its the same type of acid used in batteries. Ask the guy at the parts store for an acid kit for refilling car batteries. Dilute the acid 15% Sulfuric to 85% distilled water and simply soak the rock. You'll see it fizzing and notice the caliche will start blowing off the crystals and then dissolving which is good. Once you get the desired amount of Caliche off, have a bucket of baking soda and water ready, first rinse the specimen really well with plain water then drop the specimen in the baking soda / solution to neutralize the acid for maybe 10min. Then wash the specimen vigorously with tap water for several min using a brush to get rid of acid residue and let over caliche thats still hanging on. Obviously you wanna wear gloves but its a very simple and safe process we use all the time for such things. :)
Wow, this is great advice and would make an awesome video! I have several stones that require more cleanup than just scrubbing with soapy water. Does it work on other buildups too? Are there certain stones that will dissolve in the acid? Ty for the tip!
Some of those look like malachite mixed in too
Thank you for your fun video. Are you in mine canyon, Az? Or miners canyon? I love to look at maps where people are traveling to rock hound so maybe one day we can go too with the family. I don’t see mine canyon on google maps.
Yes, we are and no, it's not on maps. I find our spots by looking at very old maps and I use the keys to identify old mining locations. It takes time and research but so worth the effort. And it's fun too!
her: ya ready to go, hun?
him: {no/little response}
me: he talks too much! SHEESH.... quit yer jabberin!
LOL
Deep and hard ? Spelunking
yup 😆😆
That looks like a spot ive been to in senoita
This is pretty close to Sonoita!
Wow
Wow I was so excited n watched you I sell crystals but live in Arizona my friend is taking me to superior to find Apache tears etc so I can sell some add them to my inventory or wire wrap w them . I live in east valley mesa Gilbert Arizona we have many rocks items all around I just never been to collect them
There are so many great places to collect rocks in AZ! Just got to know where to look, but you can find something cool anywhere you are in AZ.
Just found your channel, and loving it as a local Arizonan. I live in Tucson, and I really want to find a place to look for azurite but I'm struggling! It seems a lot of places to look are on private land. Any advice?
Hi there! I am glad you are enjoying my channel! I suggest watching my map video, I tell you exactly how to find spots on public lands and places to dig. That will be your best bet. It can be tricky but you will find spots!!!
A** over tea kettle 😄😅
Here is the riddle to find this area:
Head 51 miles Southeast from The Basalt Covered Hill as the crow flies.
Here you will land in the place to Sharpen Knives.
From there you will head due West to the Ranch Of Sands.
Once there, you will cross thru the forest service gate and wave at Smokey The Bear.
From there on, follow the rough trail (Off Road Vehicle required) and you will be greeted by the Canyon which belonged to the Miners!
If you figure it out, let me know :)
at least you could help us get there.
I think I found it
I’ve been in this area but collected sedimentary fossils. Didn’t know there was copper around there too.
Are you sure the light teal rock your seeing isn't just "copper staining," or the corosion of traces of copper that the host rock contains?
The teal is chrysocolla, blue is azurite. Its not silicified, so it appears as a stain.
Oh hell no ur going pull ur self up I see some azurite as ur going up wow yea I can’t climb I guess I’ll never go tons green rocks omg
Yes, soooo much Azurite in that mine dump I need to go back ASAP and collect more!
trained professionals? you can't i.d. a claim marker! the "box" contained the claim owners info.

Yes, it is very risky and you could definitely get lost! I don't really recommend doing what we did. But its hard not to resist in the moment.
Is this in the Dragoon Mountains?
It isn't but very nearby!
O2 sensor…any time one goes underground PROFESSIONALS!!!!

Like I said. We are "professionals" so don't try at home!
the 2 points you got out of that vug are dog tooth calcite
Nice! Thank you for the identification!
Is that your own little car ? Where can we rent one
That is a Rzr side by side, its like an off grid buggy. They are so fun!
Loved this video. You and UA-camr "aquachigger" should do a video when he goes west for his adventures. He's from Maryland, but quite often he heads to your area to explore.
Actually, he's out there today. He just put up his latest video. Check it out. They're short, but entertaining.
Yes, I have seen his work! Maybe I will reach out to him.
I would like a hound that can sniff out amazing Chrysocolla for me.
I just found your content. It looks interesting, however UA-cam is blocking your content from me, due to network security i have in place which blocks pop up ads from UA-cam. I wish you well, I'll look for free (free from censorship) video content in other aps like Rumble. Good bye
I run an ad blocker on UA-cam and it doesn't keep me from watching videos, sounds like you might want to look into a better ad blocker. What is Rumble?
I paid $3 for tiny tiny 1 gram of azurite tiny baby
I love Azurite
Wait! You two are professionals yet you don’t have the appropriate safety gear. Stagnant water with toxic gases could make you very sick or worse.
Don’t even kid around making your video regarding to advise others not to attempt entering a closed condemned mine because your professionals. Set an example and be safe
Yep, I agree. We are most definitely bad examples in this video!
You need to quit smoking.
I did, actually.
how do You tell Turquoise from Chrysocola? also your video is very hairy.
Kind of doubt that they were attempting to impress you. They were just enjoying life.
Was interested until your disrespectful handling for a possible grave.
Will be removing you from my UA-cam.
