    We'll explore abandoned mines near Bisbee that once produced rich deposits of fluorite. I also go over some history of mining in this area and how these old mines came to be abandoned.
    Throughout my fluorite hunt, I share rockhounding tips like what tools to bring, where to dig, and how to identify promising spots. You'll learn basics that will help you get started on your own rockhounding adventures!
    From safely navigating abandoned mines to locating minerals and gemstones, this is the perfect video for anyone interested in rockhounding, especially in Arizona. Let's go dig for sparkling fluorite treasures in the desert!

      Its good to see other gals out in the desert hunting, Im a Geologist / Engineer out here in Arizona as well. I own 26 mining claims mainly in La Paz, CO ( western az) from roughly Quartzite to Kingman is my realm. If you ever get over this way and wanna do some prospecting shoot me a comment. My channel is The Lapidary Channel, I have only a few of the materials we mine in the videos but it gives ya an idea what I do. I live in quartzite.

      If you take your Fluorite and let it soak in Oxalic acid in a bucket with lid left in the sun covered for roughly 3 to 5 days it will pull out all the iron stains making your material better for specimens or cutting rough, If you ever get specimens with nice cubes and its dirty soak it in Alconox for about 3 weeks without disturbing it and even if you think the stones clean it will slowly drawl out the dirt.. leaving you with a much more valuable specimen. Hope that helps ya alittle ;)

      Just saw your comment! Yes, I would love to come visit your claims! Wow, that is a ton of claims! I am planning to do my first one for this very spot. It is pretty cheap to file a claim in AZ! Just gotta figure out how to do it. @@paleogeology9554

    What you're finding is massive fluorite, not crystals. Fluorite crystallizes in isometric cubic habit - you don't have any of those. But what you found is just beautiful!

    • @RusticSkills
      @RusticSkills  6 місяців тому +3

      So Fluorite is a mineral, not a crystal. I do refer to it as a crystal because it has crystal like habits, and yes it does form in an octahedral habit. I am glad you enjoyed my video!

The crystals are fabulous, I would love to go out there with you some time - my husband had a stroke 2 yrs ago and doesn't have the strength to walk that kind of terrain any more 😢 too much risk of falling for him. I don't suppose that you get to drive in fairly close to where you hunt??
    I am a rusty metal fanatic or junkie!! Nails, screws, scrunched up pieces of wire - itcwas handled by someone a long time ago! Sometines trying to figure out what something is - can drive ya up the freaking wall or make you happy just knowing you found it!! Would you please let people know that it is ok to take those kinds of metal relics you found, home with you!! The law says if it is less than 100 years old it is not an "archaeological resource", unless it's from a burial, then it's finders keepers!!
    (Dont know just how many rusted tin cans or pieces of barbed wire, horse shoes, etc - that our overbearing govt thinks they need, sitting in archeologists cabinets only, severly limits other American Citizens from getting to enjoy a little piecevof our history! If those who love the old rusted stuff doesnt save it when its found, it could possibly deteriorate into orange dust for no one to enjoy!! And no, there may not be enough for everyone to have a piece of it - but my taxes at work - my souvenirs!!! Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!!

    • @RusticSkills
      @RusticSkills  6 місяців тому +2

      Thank you!!! Unfortunately, most of my hunting grounds are nowhere near roads. This particular spot was a 7 mile round trip!
      I always collect the relics because if not, they only erode away never to be seen again. I am also a big time relic hunter and I plan to start making videos of my metal detecting excursions.
      I have TONS of old rusty bits from homesteads, ranches, and the old railroad :)

    In your description of fluorite, you inversely related hardness with brittleness (or toughness), and they are not the same thing. It is quite common to find minerals that are both hard and brittle like diamond. At the other extremes, lead is very soft ( Mohs 1.5) but high on the toughness scale. So fluorite is both brittle and soft, but not brittle because it is soft.

    • @RusticSkills

      I apparently missed the “cougar” (comment above yours. Or the mountain lion. Fun fact about me. I can go hunting carrying a 30.30 and a 9mm and automatically won’t leave my husband’s side 😂 always worried a mountain lion is stalking me. But let me go rock hounding alone, absolutely no fear of coming across one.

      @@SissyMchill1 yes I have had those worries about mountain lions but I don't worry anymore. I go solo a lot in the wild, and I live on 30 acres, so I have gotten used to the critters. And I have my .40 and also a big ass knife so it would suck to get attacked but I will be the last one standing 🐆

      @@RusticSkills yes 🙌🏻 love your salty thought process. I watched a video, a very viral video of a mountain lion chasing a running for about 8 minutes. And since then every time I go out hunting when I’m carrying 2 guns I fear the dang cats. When I go Rick hounding alone with only one gun I fear nothing. Funny part is growing up here in Arizona and into my adult life never gave a 2nd thought about cats or rattlesnakes. Anyhow love your videos. I had said you got a new subscriber but I had already subscribed. I don’t hardly ever see your content along with a couple other channels from AZ. Very disappointed with UA-cam.

      Yes the algorithm sucks, but I also haven't been posting all too often. I am trying to get at least one video posted a month now. It is a lot of work to film onsite, and then edit and post. I also saw that video of the cat stalking the hiker, pretty crazy, but an extremely rare occurrence. The odds of getting attacked by a mountain lion are literally one in one BILLION! In the past 100 years, there have only been 20 deaths from mountain lion attack. To put it in perspective, the odds of getting struck by lightning are one in 15,300. You have a better chance of winning the Powerball which is one in 292 million, then getting attacked by a mountain lion. I hope that helps squash your fear of cats in the wilderness! I think I will make a video about this topic.
