(1st April 1967) Match of the Day - Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool

1st April 1967: Following the Easter football programme, Liverpool remain in second place in Division One just 2 points behind leaders Manchester United. As the season reaches it's climax the Reds must today win at White Hart Lane against a Spurs side who have gone on a nine match unbeaten run. With England meeting Scotland in two weeks time there is an interesting side show for manager Alf Ramsey who is watching the game from the stands and has to decide whether to recall Jimmy Greaves in place of Roger Hunt for that match.

Totally agree. People always go on and on about Gordon Banks and as good as he was Jennings had a lot more about him and was an all round better goalkeeper.

Exakt ! Ich war 1972 als deutscher Schüler in GB. Sah ihn in der alten White Hart Lane im Spiel Spurs vs Stoke (4:3). Im Tor von City stand der legendäre Gordon Banks.

We know Jimmy said the hepatitis affected his speed. But this was two years later and look at that change of pace for the second goal. The most naturally talented English player ever. Rest Easy Jimmy G.

Roger Hunt was a really fast number 9 & did a great Job for the Scousers( scored plenty of goals) ,but he wasn't Sir Jimmy Greaves, JG was operating at a different level!

Greaves decided he didnt want to play for England anymore thats why Ramsey didnt pick him. He got fed up of being picked in the squad but not playing. He only played 3 times after the 66 final and even though picked in the Euro 68 squad didnt play. Ironically he only scored 2 goals in major finals. Bobby Charlton in his England years autobiography gave him a backhanded compliment saying that in a 5/0 win Greaves would score 4 but wouldnt have a kick in a scruffy 1/0 win

sir Alf did pick Greaves for the international against Scotland in in next international.

​@@dlamiss Greaves's records speak for themselves. They have stood the test of time. Bobby Charlton was full of backhanded compliments, Frank o Farrell said he was a moaner and didn't need to be as he was a world class player. Greaves wasn't the same after losing his son and then being left out of the 66 final. even though he was still prolific by 1970 the press were crying gbout for a re- call and he said that he would have gone to Mexico. who knows but the guy was a goal machine and he did his job exceptionally well

@@LordFlashheart.11 Yes he was the league top scorer in 68/9 but his form certainly dipped the following season. He was on record in saying he should have stayed at Tottenham
