(6th May 1967) Match of the Day - Southampton v Nottingham Forest
6th May 1967: 'Match of the Day' editor Alec Weeks, who passed away on Monday, must have felt Manchester United would be unable to seal the First Division crown with a victory at West Ham United on this day. Instead, with plenty at stake, cameras were sent to the Dell where Southampton entertained Nottingham Forest. Just one week previous second placed Forest were dumped out of the FA Cup Semi Final 2-1 by Spurs, costing them the chance of a possible Double. Now anything less than a win against the Saints would hand Manchester United the League title as well. Unfortunately for Forest they faced Southampton needing to win to avoid relegation and survival sending down Aston Villa.

Coventry City, who impressed on the show several weeks ago, have since failed to win a match and slipped from the top of Division Two behind Wolves. Here they welcome...

25th February 1967: Wolves gritty performance against Everton in the FA Cup last week obviously impressed the BBC bosses so much they decided to feature the club again the following week. Wolves had to focus on the season's main priority of promotion to Division One and faced a tricky visit to a windy Fratton Park where Portsmouth, as usual in financial trouble, awaited them. Luckily for the BB...

Leeds were cheated out of this match by the match officials ......as well as the famous off side in the league deciding match v W.Brom in 1971....as well as the 1973 Cup Winners Cup final v AC Milan.... as well as the 1975 European Cup Final v Bayern Munich.....as well as the FA making them play two days. after winning the 1972 FA Cup in a league deciding match away to Wolves A bit of a trend there eh. Look them up on You Tube if you dont believe me.

They were as much sinners as sinned against. While you are right, there were some really terrible moves by officials, quite a few politically motivated, Revie was of that type. An.uttrrly cynical man managing an equally cynical team. It's a shame because that cynical attitude often robbed the team as much as the political moves against them. That being said, on their day, they were as great a club side as there has ever been anywhere in the world at any time. Definitely the greatest Wuropean club side never to have won the European Cup. Balanced out by a Real Madrid side who have won it most but should be stripped of them all. What began in the 1950s and 60s has destroyed football completely.

I'm old enough to remember the 60s but this video and others like it certainly put paid to any nostalgia for the football of the time. All one sees are elementary errors; horrendous tackles that would merit a straight red card nowadays; a complete absence of tactics; and pitch invasions.

I was there. Travelled up from London Alex Stepney was still living in London so he was on the train back for a few matches. United fans used to sing you sold the wrong one at Chelsea. The return at Stamford bridge was 3-1 to United. Tony Hateley, Osgood's replacement, didn't win a header all match against the great Billy Foulkes. There weren't that many Chelsea fans at he match, but they stood under the TV gantry, hence the noise.

In the same season Fulham won a crucial match away at Macclesfield Town; incredible that Macclesfield were in the first division. One side of their pitch was missing any seating or stands. it was marked by a rope on metal poles!!

Great history; muddy pitch, everyone getting really muddy, crazy tackles going un checked, fans on the wrong side of the pathetic side fencing, large terraces with no restrainer bars and whole sections of the crowd falling on each other, and players having their "names taken" by the ref instead of being Booked! This was a start of a winning run for Fulham and they escaped relegation. My mate and I usually stood on the corner of the Putney bridge end, at the top, when it was just bare concrete steps. Approximately where Mr Wostenholme was standing when he opened the programme. Steve Earle and Les Barrett were my favourite players.

Back in autumn 1966 I remember Arsenal wearing plain Red shirts at Goodison Park, Everton won 3-1 that day and that kit was quickly changed. Everton today wear a similar kit, only blue, and white socks and shorts that diminishes to clubs main colours like it seems it did to Arsenal back then They were a great side 70-71 and some of that team are seen here. It was always hard to think Everton were the champions the year before Arsenal and faded away the next few seasons
