This debate about Zidane's abilities (or performances) shows something about his very own way of playing. Lots of rational arguments tend to put him away from the very top of the football pyramid, yet at the same time he definitely comes to mind when we talk about the greatest. I think it is because of his way of moving on the pitch, he had a very distinctive grace that made his greatest moments even more beautiful and noteworthy. His playstyle magnified what was one of the most excellent player of his generation and makes us judge him on other notions than we would tend to use on other players.

The stats in the video are simply wrong. He had 154 assists. You also didn't count his assists for France and AS Cannes. He also had 156 goals!
You have talked about his performance against Bayern Munich in the Champions League but the match before he orchestrated a comeback against the reigning Champions, AC Milan; he assisted twice in that second leg!
Also, he did get sent off in the 2006 World Cup but he is the one who got that team qualified for the tournament. Without him, France was going fourth in qualification. He took them to the World Cup and carried them all the way to the Final. He scored the last goal against Spain, assisted the winning goal and orchestrated a masterpiece of a performance against Brazil, scoring the winning penalty against Portugal. Against Italy, he scored that Panenka kick which was completely insane!!! He created a few great chances for Ribéry and Henry and Malouda but those of course went unnoticed! Also, in extra time, he almost scored with a header which was deflected by Buffon.

Undoubtely a legend but you also have to consider that despite being surrounded by the best players in the world, the last 3 seasons of his career went trophyless with the exception of a spanish super cup. And contrary to popular belief he wasn't even the best for his country in the 1998 WC, he went almost the whole tournament missing. He was red carded and could only return for the quarter finals against Italy where he couldn't do much against the italian defense as the game ended 0-0 and went to penalties. Against Croatia, a game I had the chance to see, he played very well and created chances but the best of that match undoubtely was Thuram who scored the 2 goals that sent them to the final. In fact, it was Thuram who was awarded the bronze ball as the 3rd best player of that tournament and consecuently the best player from that team.

Arguments from statistics about human performance always lack perspective on the individual. Zizou was not a great footballer because of goals, or assists or whatever folderol he did or did not collect in various farmer's leagues - he was a great footballer because he was one of the last, big, hairy-balled strutters who took the game by the scruff of the neck, terrified the opposition and made games run purely to his will, before the sanitization, wimpification and genericization of football became complete. And, as in most things in life where they are trying to extinguish every aspect the reflects masculinity, the media is terrified of dealing with a legacy "tainted" by Zizou's unapologetic asskickingness. So maybe he wasnt great in statistics, but when players are all stage trained zombies and over coddled man-children, as they are becoming, he'll be one of the few dim an receding lights we'll look back on and say "Football used to be better''

I mentioned 7 players. I assume you are referring to Messi. Well, in his case, it's quite simple. In terms of club career, ZZ is a joke compared to him. And even in terms of international career, he has contributed more to his team than ZZ to France. Messi has scored and assisted far more for his country than ZZ for France. Messi's main problem is that he's mentally weak and chockes on the big occasions. But ZZ is no better, since he also has a dreadful record in major finals.
With the exception of Euro 2000, where he played well, ZZ was not instrumental for the success of France in any other major events.
And btw, I'm no fan of Messi and to me he's nowhere near the top 3 all time. However, hes definitely top 10 all time and far superior to ZZ.
ZZ is not even top 20 all time.

He's somehow credited as a "big game player" even though he only showed up for 2 finals in his whole career, and went invisible in most of the others:
1996 UEFA cup final - invisible, gets destroyed at home, team loses
1997 CL final - invisible, his team loss (the same team that had won it in 1996 without him)
1998 CL final - invisible, his team loses
1998 WC final - clutch, scores 2 headers from set pieces after being average the entire tournament, team wins
2000 Euro final - invisible, team wins because he's bailed out by Wiltord and Trezeguet (Zidane not involved in their goals)
2002 CL final - clutch, team wins
2002 CdR final - invisible, team loses

Secondly, back then, in Serie A, scoring a lot of goals just didn't happen. It was an insanely difficult league with some of the best players to ever play the game. More research needs to be done prior to making such a video. For instance,
    1) Consistency - European Sports Media comes out with monthly player XIs for club football games and Zidane has the highest appearances for an attacking player from his era in those. To compare, Messi and CRonaldo are the players with the most appearances in this era.
    2) Real Madrid - Zidane had great players surrounding him but all were past their primes by the time he had finished a couple of seasons for the team. When this was followed by Real Madrid sacking Del Bosque and selling their best CB and DM, Zidane alone couldn't turn the team around.
    3) Juve and Madrid fan perception - Zidane was never the man around which these teams built their squads for various off-field reasons, so he would never have the same level of admiration as players like Del Piero/Raul who were effectively homegrown and thus the focus of the team
    4) Big game player - Zidane has in 23 International tournament Final and Semifinal appearances for club and country, around 20 goal participations including 10 goals, 5 assists and 5 pre-assists/pks won as a midfielder. That's a ratio that guys like CRonaldo, Messi, etc. have.
    5) Big game performances - Zidane's performances in his team's major tournament exits are typically underrated while his opponent's are overrated. For instance, in the 99 CL SF Zidane had an assist in the 2nd leg and was not bothered much by Keane yet the narrative is the opposite.
    6) Zidane Assists - Your assist stats are off. Zidane has over 175 assists for both club and country. His assist numbers are not recorded correctly, due to those numbers not being considered important by statisticians during most of his playing career.
    7) Zidane Goals - Zidane was not a primary pk or fk taker for his clubs apart from his time at Bordeaux (when he was the primary fk taker) and his country prior to 2000, otherwise his goal numbers would be significantly higher since in 4 seasons he had Platini's Juventus fk nos for Bordeaux.

In 98 he wasn't his best and even got reds but shows up against Brazil with x2 headers to win the WC. In 2006 disciplinary issues again in group stages and final. He made a career off 3 things. Elegance in style of play, few big game goals and NT exploits. He could easily be replaced by many other CAMs of his generation to the same effect. This is why Madrid did ok with Sneijder and Guti after and Juve with Nedved after his sale.

Thanks that's actually a really brave opinion to share these days. Young people now seem to overrate a lot of retired footballers just because they watched youtube videos of him or because they heard people talking about them. Zidane is one of those guys who regularly gets over praised by kids who have never even watched a single game of him. And he's not the only one. Players like Kaká and Drogba are seen as some of the best footballers of all time just because the young community thinks it's cool to hate on current players and say that they will never reach the feats of those so called legends. I'm not hating on Kaká or Drogba or Zidane or other players that feature on this category but I just think it's super disrespectful for people who have never seen those "untouchable legends" play to say that they are miles ahead of certain other players. Sure these 3 that I mentioned were world class but they aren't even near Ronaldo or Messi and other greats of the game.
One example of this is a pole that I saw in the other day about who was the best striker of this decade. Some of the nominees were Suarez, Lewandowski, Aguero and also... Drogba. A guy who in 10 years only played 3 seasons in a top 5 league (not to mention that he didn't do that great since he was already old). And who do you think won the poll? Of course fucking Didier won it with like 65% of the votes. It's actually insane to kids these days to think that he was better than some of the top strikers of this generation. Sure he had that amazing final and he was an outstanding player but I don't think he would even make a top 30 list of best strikers of all time.
Nowadays we can all watch those youtube videos and think that those retired players were perfect since there aren't any videos showing their flaws. With current players we can all watch them live on TV and see an occasional bad game or mistakes that they make and thing to ourselves: "These guys aren't even near the level of the goats of the past". And it's super annoying to argue with someone about this since they will call you a kid that knows nothing about football.

Quite an absurd video that reeks of pseudo-intellectual bs that does not hold up to scrutiny. Forget watching him play, there are very few players in history with his trophy cabinet, having one every major trophy and individual award (except scoring awards) and beyond that, he was the central protagonist for all these major trophies. A 3x player of the year, 1x Ballon D'Or, 4x European player of the year, best european player of the last 50 years, UEFA Champions League Best Player of the Past 20 Years: 2011. He is also the midfielder with the most ESM Team of the Season appearances, the most Fifa Player of the Year awards in history - which speaks to his consistency. You spoke about inconsistency but presented no evidence. Let us not talk about actually watching him play - he was above his contemporaries as a footballer. So somehow Zidane not only has concrete achievements as a footballer, but he seems to have fooled the entire world except you. Very bizarre video.

I don't even know where to start.
First of all you criticize ZZ on his consticency at club level, arguing he never scored more than 12 goals in a campaign. I'm sure you know this but ZZ was a Midfielder, offensively minded it is true, but he was a true midfielder that would have to cover all the pitch in all the teams in which he played (a part for France, which is why he was so prolific). In Juventus and in Real Madrid, he never played as an actual number 10.
He created goals for his attacking team mates which were spectacular at the time so he wasn't asked from his coaches to dribble the last defender 1 on 1 or -to make runs in the back of the defense to create space as midfielders would do nowadays.
Now I can't argue he would be the GOAT, considering Messi and Ronaldo brought the game to a whole new level. But Zizou would EASILY be in the top 10 players of all time. He did win the Champions League, the Euro, the World Cup almost twice !! (being 36 years old and achieving some of the best perfomances ever seen in football)
Oh and yes, ZZ would have won 3 ballon d'ors, in 2000 and in 2006 if it wasn't for stupid red cards that made journalists vote for Figo and Cannavaro.

I think the problem is that unlike other attacking midfielders his primary role was not to finish or to assist but to create attacks meaning he was not the one that scored (ridiculous by the way to criticise that he hasn´t scored too often) but the one who initiated attacks by overcoming the defensive midfielders of the opposite teams. (Not a good comparison but I´d say the role of an 8 instead of a 10 in modern teams) Knowing that his tactical role was a significant other than the one of let´s say Cruyff or Maradona and of course despite his abilities with the ball less spectacular what you say in the vid is just not right. Of course you can argue if he his among the top 10 of greatest players of all times but you can not compare apples with pears and in order to fairly judge him you have to take his tactical role especially in the Real years into consideration.

Be honest Lionel Messi himself is inconsistent with Argentina national football team. Yes he gets them to international tournament final matches. But he has ended up on the losing side four out of five of those final matches in major international tournaments he appeared in. And whilst he has played well in some of these final matches it in the end wasn't good enough from him. Argentina national football team suffered four successive losing, major international tournament final match losses. Before they actually ended up winning their fifth final, all with Lionel Messi in their national football team. And the fact that during this run even when they finally won at the fifth time of asking in a major international tournament final match. Lionel Messi did not produce when it matters either a single goal or a single goal assist during all five of those major international tournament finals matches. Maybe if Lionel Messi had actually scored a goal or maybe provided a goal assist the Argentina national football team would have actually won several of those final matches they ended up losing. They even lost in two successive Copa America tournament final matches to Chile. A Chile national football team who could not score a goal in either of those two final matches themselves. For all Lionel Messi achievements at club level he is definitely overrated at international level football. No way am I calling a player who has an 80% loss ratio to just a meager 20% win ratio in their five major international tournament final matches the best football player ever. Because he definitely isn't at international level. Lionel Messi failed too many times in major international tournament final matches simple as that. Even at Barcelona he Lionel Messi has never been able to retain the UEFA Champions League in two successive years not even once. And yet he was apparently playing in the greatest club team ever according to some people. By comparison Real Madrid from the mid 1950s won the European Champions Club Cup as it was, a still an outstanding and record five successive finals in a row as the dominant force in European club football. And let's not forget Lionel Messi has as yet not won the most prestigious prize in Association Football bar none the FIFA World Cup Finals.
So yes Lionel Messi perhaps the greatest footballer ever in club level football, but at international level football certainly he is not. And what a player does at club level is irrelevant as as an international football player. He has never been dominant with Argentina national football team at international level. He has failed more times than won when it matters most at international level. We all know that to be true.

A: You must list the requirements, and conditions you going to measure in order to conclude someone is the GOAT.
B: You must provide how you are going to measure them.
C: All players must be measure by the same set of conditions.
As those things stand, you just rambled around numbers without have a definition for what would make a footballer GOAT.
My main measurement for example is: What have they won? (And yes i understand this is a team game, and so is basketball, and if someone says Jordan is the GOAT is cuz he won more, and was the most complete player) In this case there is only 1 footballer that has won it ALL in football history. ZINEDINE ZIDANE. And also the most complete, talent wise.
Goals stats can't be measured equally in different eras. For the following reasons.
1- Zidane's times where harder, as most ppl got marked really hard. Go watch a video of zidane's goals, he would get kicked 3 times before shooting. Today, Messi and Ronaldo get wind in their face, and thats a yellow card for the other team.
2- Physical conditions were not the same. Both, for the player, and the environment in which they played.
3- Amount of games, and how in those times La Liga was more balanced, these days you know RM and Barcelona are the only 2 candidates for La Liga.
Since getting A, B, and C correct is kind of hard. I guess everyone can speculate which player is the GOAT, depending on what they like. In my opinion ZZ was the most complete player in talent, and the most complete in results.

I think people sometimes confuse the words "greatest" and "best". The word "great" literally means "big" and someones "greatness" has as much to do with how big a deal they are as it does with how skillful they are/were. In the 80s George Best went on record speaking about how he believes Ruud Gullit is a better footballer than Diego Maradona, a sentiment I wholeheartedly agree with, and even though hearing you mention Maradona as one of the top five greatest players of all time makes me as sick to my stomach as hearing Cristiano mentioned ahead of less prolific but more intelligent and naturally gifted attackers like Eusebio and Original Ronaldo, I have to remind myself that "greatness" is a narrative that does not always accurately reflect quality. Muhammad Ali is undoubtedly the "greatest of all time" in the boxing world, but the argument about who is the best pound-for-pound is still being waged to this day. Some insist it's Ali, while others are adamant that it's Sugar Ray Robinson or Floyd Mayweather Jr, but Ali practically personifies boxing the way Pele personifies football. This is why I think GOAT lists are silly, being second on the list is completely irrelevant. Messi isn't on my GOAT list because there is only Pele, Ali, Michael Jordan, Bruce Lee. I still think Messi might possibly be the best football player to ever walk upon the earth, but he can't be GOAT unless he and Pele do a Freaky Friday.
So basically, I agree, there is no solid GOAT argument for Zidane. There isn't one for Maradona either though. You just pick your one guy based on how big a deal he was to the sport and then move on because it's usually a fairly objective decision when you realise that "greatness" measures fame and reputation better than it measures talent.

    • @Terminator6364
      @Terminator6364 2 роки тому

What makes you think Pele is greater then Maradona or Messi? Pele got his reputation when he won 3 World Cups and because of the impact of television those years. That established him as the GOAT but when you actually inspect his career and quality further you can absolutly find flaws when comparing him to these two. Brazil was definitely good enough to win without him just like they did 1962 when he got injured. Maradona litterly carried his club and nation like no one has ever done before or after. Just by watching and comparing them it is kinda obvious who had most talent especially considered Maradona played in a tougher era 20 years later. Main reasons why Pele is still considered the GOAT to many is because they were told as children, he is the undisputed GOAT even without watching him play. The other reason is that Maradona was a far more complex person, taking drugs and obviously cheating in different ways. I can agree that Ali and Jordan still personifies their sport but Pele is not ahead of Maradona, Messi & C.Ronaldo anymore.

He deserves to be considered one of the best because he out perform all others in the apex competition of football. Whether it be the Champions League, the Euros, the World Cup, La Liga or Serie A, Zidane's impact was there for all to see. He, alongside Ronaldo Nazario were the best players of their generation. At club level he didn't win a glut of trophies like Messi and Ronaldo because these two players are simply freaks of nature and they have achieved feats unthought of previously.
