NOTE: Just to clarify, since there seems to be some confusion, the point of this video is not to say that Pele is the greatest player of all time. The point is simply that he is undoubtedly one of the greatest, and to call him a fraud is patently absurd, that's all! The video has nothing to do with Messi, Maradona or anyone else for that matter. Peace and love, UA-cam friends. ✌🏽👍🏽

HITC Sevens haters may post rubbish here, but this is a great list. We all can disagree with who is the greatest of all time, myself included, however no doubt that pele is in that conversation. Before ronaldo and messi it was he and maradona. Just because we now in the era of those two, doesn't mean that we should dimiss pele as a so called fraud, which makes me laugh. Keep up the good work

Ivan Malanquini because new age “fans” live in an era where they watch one league (usually the PL) plus champions league and some derby elsewhere. They have no idea about world football, specially anything before the year 2000. Much less about how great South American teams were up to the early 90s

Actually there are many examples of South American clubs beating European clubs until the 1980's. Before money played a bigger role in football, the sides were more leveled. Most of south-american talents stayed in their domestic leagues. The problem started when European clubs started to get richer and richer so they could pay way higher wages and sign any south american player that slightly stand out. Now the best south american players leave the continent before completing 23 years old and reach their career top form playing in Europe.
Now just try to imagine the best South American players still in their homeland. Club football right here would be as strong as in Europe.

I hate when people say stuff like "latin american or brazillian clubs were weak" when in a reality the Intercontinental Cup was very balanced between European and Latin american clubs (with a slight advantage to the Libertadores winners). That idea is very anachronic, people only think that because of the state of football today. Very centralised in European clubs, but back in the day things were way more balanced.

Even nowadays, sometimes the south american teams play very balanced matches against european ones and sometimes they beat them. Back in the day there wasn't such a huge financial difference, so indeed it's a pretty dumb thing to say and probably people that say this kind of stuff don't even watch libertadores or national championships

    • @herrerasauro7429

More than that, Campeonato Paulista while having 4 major teams, had at least one more team, Guarani, which won the national cup once back when brazilian teams were actually the finest in the world.
The state of São Paulo in Brazil is as big in territorial size and populace as most European countries and it's regional cup's talented pool was not smaller than the european countries of similar sizes.
What people fail to grasp about brazilian football is: We've got at least 12 clubs who fancies themselves "major" clubs nationally, each one of them with plenty of laurels and plenty of feats. Even decadent teams, such as Botafogo (my team), whose case is very weak as of late, can still can muster at least 3 all-star players of football's history of the sport in Garrincha, Nilton Santos and Jairzinho, with plenty more whose names shall not be forgotten, such as Zagallo, Didi, Carlos Alberto Torres, Heleno dos Santos, Amarildo and more.

You forgot one of the most recurring arguments: idiots claiming again and again that "Pelé scored most of his goals when the offside rule didn't exist" without knowing that the offside rule existed long before Pelé was even born and that it was actually redefined through the years to make it less punishing and allow more goals to be scored, It was actually more punishing when Pelé player and even more punishing before Pelé. The offside rule, softened down as we know it today, dates back only to 1990.
Add to that the fact that defenders could break him time and time again during games without too much worry as yellow and red cards didn't exist back then (they were introduced on his last world cup), you have a pretty rough environment for attackers unlike today's football.
I'm not saying he's the GOAT, I'll keep that my opinion on who is the GOAT to myself as I just don't want to argue with fanboys of every other player, but the fact that he was one of football greats is undeniable.

stk2521 62 was his best year and if he played the rest of that World Cup then people would never argue. He was 17 years old doing things in a World Cup and World Cup final people could only dream of doing in a life time. Such skills and grace and such a wonderful touch. I'm sure if Zico, Maradona, Di Stefano and Pele worked with modern systems they would destroy it as well as the records. People tried to be like Pele the world over and were coached with him as the main focus of inspiration including the greats like Zico and Maradona. People tried to be like him. Pele never wanted to be anyone else including other Brazilian greats. He was considered the greatest in the greatest teams even as a teenager. People who say otherwise are just biased or ignorant.

People gotta stop looking for the best player of all time - it's very difficult to scale greatness when it comes to football. Many people don't even take defenders and GKs into consideration when it comes to picking their GOAT. What are your criteria? Goals? Consistency? Prime? GKs will almost never score a goal in their career but they'll be the most consistent.
As HITC has done already, it's better to pick the best players for each position. Each position has its own criteria and you're therefore able to at least do that.
And: heskey scored more goals for England than pele did.

      A. Y but pele won 3 world cups and score 80 times in 100 appearances, usually the goat is not a defensive player /gk because it's way hard to play upfront, when your playing with your friends who do you pick first? The keeper or the crossforward that will carry you? Don't get me wrong, it is very important roles but the attackers are always the most skilled players in the squad

I always wonder whether those who say that ever played competitively in any sport. As a player, if I was going up against the "best ever" I would come up with my A game. To think that players who worked so hard to get to the top of the mountain by playing professionally would just phone it in when they get a once in a lifetime opportunity to match up against one of the greatest ever is simply ludicrous.

Brazilian here. My dad used to watch Pele's games live, in the stadium. He was a professional football player, a central back, played in few small clubs in Brazil and when I told him "Pele was not that great", he made me sit with him and watch a few documentaries and videos of his goals and performances, telling me about the games he saw too.
Since that day I never even though of saying that again. Pele was ahead of his time, he was at the top of his physique, he had a tactical knowledge and game vision that a few had in that decade. He was a poacher, a classic 10, a striker and a winger, playing at the top of his game in every position.
He was one of the greatest, if not the greatest player of all time, for sure.

I always go for Pele whenever I watch these compilations of the usual suspects (Pele Maradona, Ronaldo, Ronaldino and Messi) because 75% of his games were not recorded which means that his compilations videos (all his dribbling and skills sequences) are drawn from only 25% of the competitive games he ever played in, yet his compilation videos are the most impressive of all.
So many clips of his amazing dribbles actually lead to amazing goals (as opposed to dribbles that didn't go anywhere) and his greatest ever goal (against Juventus in 1959) is one of those that are not featured in any of his compilations video because it was not recorded. How many more great skills and goals did he score in the 75% of games that were not taped??... we can only imagine.
The very first clip 0.16, where he stops the ball, draws two players on to him and then flicks it through his legs and leaves them both for dead, is up there with the best skills ever seen on a football field (which he did in a game against Russia, played in Soviet Russia in 1963).
By the time you get to Maradonna in the 1980s up to 90% of his competitive games are recorded, and as for Ronaldo, Ronaldino and Messi, every single competitive game they have ever played is on tape.
In other words, the best thing Maradona, Ronaldo, Ronaldino and Messi ever did in a competitive game of football are in their compilation videos... This cannot be said about Pele.

Remember, the ball was made from leather, the pitch was real grass, the goal was smaller, and back tackle was allowed.

They feel the need to pick a side.

Pele and Maradona were some of the top players of that generation and I'm sure plenty of debates went on back then about them in the same way we argue about Messi and Cristiano. All four of these players were special, playing ahead of their time in ways others could not imagine then and now. That is why it goes without saying now that Messi and Cristiano are greatest of their time at the moment, in my personal opinion.

Against Peñarol in '66 and Boca Juniors in '00. Real got 3 Intercontinental Cups tied to Boca, Peñarol and Nacional do Uruguay and Milan.

No. Pelé was a top player his time throughout 20 years, yes. He was over this period the most constant one, but arguably not the best -- and certainly not "ahead", ahead of what? If you mean his play and skills, well Garrincha was that, and prior to Pelé! In his Selecao, where he won three WC titles he was never the undisputed best player (Didi WC1958, Garrincha WC1962, (1966), and only here Pelé WC1970 where Jairzinho was considered the better and driving force of the Selecao 1970 by many teammates and experts). Also he was never the essential figure in his team, nor a leader (as for example Jairzinho in the WC1970!!). "Just" a great player, yes. One of the best of his generation, yes. And also easily not the greatest football player -- just to start with, simply because he was not even better than his teammates on the big stage, nor the driving force or indispensable for the achieved success.

It usually comes from folks who are too small to produce anything of value for themselves, and try to diminish other people's accomplishments as a way to compensate their own insecurity and lack of talent.
Pele was a football genius, that is unquestionable by anyone who knows the sport. Too bad his best moments were in a time when filming was difficult and limited, so we don't get to see most of his matches and goals. We'd be thrilled, to say the least. He just turned 80 and deserves all respect and admiration as the athlete he once was and the person he is now.

People who dont understand difference between fundamentals to play, skills and technique shouldnt be allowed to say those bullshit about Pele been overated . Pele was complete inside all aspects of the game he had more variety of shoting technique and he was always balanced to play making very wise usage of the fundamentals to play with both legs the shoting technique of his was superior to anyother player nowadays. I agree that Messi and Maradona has a superior skill set in comparison to Pele but technicaly speaking Pele was way better than them both, come one dude compare the weeker foot. I mean mararona or messy's right foot cant be compared with pele left foot thats just ridiculous ppl are dumb, blind or only haters thats how it is. I believe theres case to say Messy is overated though but that will definately depends on the way you're looking in to those aspects of the game Messy and Maradona are probably the most skillful players ever because in my opinion it doesnt matter if you have more skills its always how you use your skills in other words the skill set up is what is important and thats the reason I put Messy and Maradona on the same level as Pele in a overall perspective however if you look only at the technique you will notice that they are not in the level of Pele its just a simple case of understanding the difference between two different aspects of the game its depends on the point of view you're heading into it though.j

      1. The World Cup was not as competitive as nowadays, there were 32 teams at that time. The same ones will always win the World Cup. Brazil and West Germany. Nowadays football is more competitive and even Nigeria or Switzerland can compete with them.
      2. Tell me something so if Higuaín in the World Cup final of 2014 in Germany if he worried have scored, Argentina would have won the World Cup. And messi would win it also. So are we going to argue who’s the best player by some tournament that is every 4 years? Do 7 matches determine who’s the better player? Or do statistics and the way they play every week determine that? Messi and Ronaldo are better than Pele. I’m not saying Pele was bad, quite the contrary he was world class. But not as the same level as Messi and CR7.

Santos de Pelé won only 2 Libertadores, due to the violence in South American football being much bigger than in Brazil. That is why the Brazilians gave more importance to the national championships. Just to see how many Brazilians have already beaten the Libertadores from 1992 to today, when São Paulo beat Barcelona and Milan in the intercontinental championship. Who says that Pelé made many goals in provincial championships, do not know the weight of these championships until the 1990s. Watch the balance of the Brazilian championship, try to understand more about the country of football and then try to argue about it. Pele was top scorer every year with many goals ahead of his competitors. Santos's Pelé stopped playing for the Libertadores to tour in Europe. Research the subject.

As a brazilian, i see you really did a great research job here, but you are incorrect when you say that 'campeonato paulista' was like a lower standard national league. Brazil is a continental sized country, and it means that only an anual national league wasn't (and it's not till today) enough to cover the whole country. Back into that time, the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro were by far the states with the most competitive league, and the major part of the strongest teams from the national league came from there. Actually, because of the regional rivalry, many of the teams from those states considered those regional leagues even more importants than the national one. So, I believe we could say that back into the 60's, those regional goals had the same importance of the ones scored nationaly

Pele went to the 1958 World Cup age only 17. He played in only four
games yet scored 6 goals and all the goals were scored in the last
three games. 1 in the Quater finals, 3 in the Semi Finals and 2 in
the finals too become the tournaments 2nd top goal scorer, runner up
only to Frances "Just Fontaine" who scored 13 goals (still a world cup
record). In other words he didn't score any goals in the group stage
(the easiest stage) where the tournaments leading strikers tend to score
most of their goals, he scored all of his goal in the three most
important, most demanding rounds of the most important competition in all
of world sport. Few if any will ever do that again and certainly not aged 17.
75% of Peles games were not recorded yet his compilation videos are as good
(arguably better) than compilation videos of his modern day rivials(
Ronaldo, Ronaldinio, Neymar, Messi and Maradona etc). Every competitive
games these modern plays have ever played are right there in those
compilations videos, their best goals, best skills best moments. Forget
75%, its likely that not even 5% of what they did on a professional
playing field has not been recorded. Unlike Pele, their compilation
videos tell the complete story, there's no missing footage (or at least
    not much).
Today young players can study in detail the individual
moves of the greats and then practice them to perfection. Pele played
in an era when you had to learn football the hard way by picking up
footballing lessons here and there (in dribs and drabs).

  • @vincoletto2

Brazilian here. You did not get properly the weak brazilian teams factor correctly. Brazil has a national league, but back at Pele's time it almost did not exist. Opinions may differ, but the real Brazilian League started in 1967 with the strongest teams of the country playing against each other.
Most of Pele's goals were scored in the Regional league, against teams of Sao Paulo State area (Campeonato Paulista). This tournament is small today, but is was the main one from around 1910 to 1980. It would take 6 months or more each year.
Those teams from the regional league were poor and weak, exept for maybe 5 or 6 teams.
Its like if messi could play 70% of his games only against tems from the second division in spain.
Also he didnt play much against teams from south america as Libertadores Cup was not important for brazilian teams at that time.
But despite that, considering all the rest, he is the best player from the 60' onward. Because unfortunately we dont have many images of Puskas and Fredeireich.

"Pele did play in farmer's league".
This is BY FAR, the worst argument against Pele, simply because state-level tournaments in Brasil, throughout the 50s, 60s, and even late 80s were not weak, on the contrary, in fact, some of them (São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Rio Grande do Sul) were very strong.
First of all, Brazilian football was much stronger then, since almost all Brazilian players would remain in the country. Imagine if Neymar, Coutinho, Marcelo, Firmino, Casemiro, Gabriel Jesus, Paulinho, Thiago Alcantara, Thiago Silva played domestic. The 1958 team? All of them played locally. 1962 team? 1970 team? 1950 second place team? Yeah, you got it.
And I'm not talking only about first class players in Spain, England, Germany or Italy. Imagine if the hundreds of brazilian players in Portugal, Ukraine, Japan, Turkey, Russia were playing in Brazil. That was the situation until late 80s.
It's also important to notice that Brazil is a huge continental country. There wasn't a national organized tournament until late 60's. State level tournaments were by far the most important events. It must be said that some of Brazilian states are as big as most of European Countries, but football is historically centered on a few of those states. São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro were the main ones, with Minas Gerais and Rio Grande do Sul on close second.
    In the 1958 team there were 10 players from São Paulo (from 5 different teams), and 12 players from Rio (from 5 different teams). 1962 had 13 from 4 different teams from São Paulo. 1970 team had 11 players from Sâo Paulo (from 5 different teams);
If you take a list of teams with most National Champions from the 60's until now, first, second, fourth and fifth places are teams from São Paulo - Palmeiras, Santos, Corinthians and São Paulo FC. All of them, by the way, are also multiple Copa Libertadores Champions. Not to mention medium level teams with multiple second place and third place national honours like Portuguesa, Ponte Preta and Guarany (1978 national champion), that were also playing on São Paulo.
Teams from São Paulo have more National Trophies than teams from all the other states combined.
So, HOW, HOW, HOW can you say that the São Paulo State was not a very strong Tournament, with FOUR high level teams and a number of medium level teams?!?!?!
It was strong! Pele was playing against some of the best! Pele's team, Santos, was playing against some of the world's best players, and beating some of Brazil's best teams.
It´s foolish to compare those Brazilian state-level tournaments with German ones. They are not the same.
Nowadays, people forget this, cause the National Tournament is well established, but simply put. State-level Tournaments WERE the most important tournaments throughout the 50's till the 70's.
And you know what? THE SAME IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW IN EUROPE.
Imagine this: São Paulo is roughly the size of the UK and has/had 4 high-level teams, Minas Gerais, with two high-level teams, is the size of Spain, Rio has/have 4 high-level teams, Rio Grande do Sul have/has 2, and so on.
Those states had very strong state-level championships.
One day, they decided to create a strong National Tournament and, little by little, those strong state tournaments begin to shrink. 40 years later, we are calling them "farmer's league"
Well, Spain has 2 (maybe 3) strong teams; England has 4, Germany has 2, Italy I don't know anymore, 2 or 3.
There are always plans for a Europe League, with all of them.
Imagine if little by little they begin to abandon the domestic league in favor of this new continental one.
40 years from now, there will be people saying that Messi or Ronaldo or Muller played in a farmer´s league.

Spot on dude. Glad to see someone taking these haters to task. However I'd add atop your own points a few points of my own:1. Not only was the brazillian league, similar to if not superior to Europes top leagues, but football parity both within and outside of Europe was considerably higher than now. Di Stefano joined RM at the age of 26 from a Columbian team and convinced many he was the greatest player in history. teams like Reims and Partizan Belgrade made it to the CL final. Money didn't water down competition to a few leagues much less a few teams like it has in the 00's and 10's. And you see this in sports around the world: Cricket the West Indies were the most dominant team in the 60's and 70's, likewise in that time in baseball many black players came over form the negro leagues to dominate mainstream baseball despite their formative years in a "lesser league". Nowadays players like Messi and Suarez earn more than entire teams in the same leagues they play in. Parity in sports was greater in the 60's than it is today, especially in football.2. the easiest argument to counter owing to its blatant logical fallacy and imo is much more applicable to Messi than Pele3. the 1000 goals claim has been ratified by the guinness book of records and it's important to place that point in context. For a person from his generation making it into the guinness book of records was how one wrote themselves into history. And if you understand anything about that record book it's only concerned with quantity not quality. Nowadays obviously no one cares about the guinness book of records, fans are only interested in official football standards which is obviously fine; but simply anyone from his era marveled at someone who entered the guinness book of records and so it was a point of pride and remains one for him today. Also good calls on the final two points. Ppl who dismiss Pele intentionally overlook what he did in '58 as a 17 year old since it would mean accepting that his performance was the epitome of athletic prodigiousness in soccer the likes of which we haven't seen even remotely close to. Also they are ignorant to the fact that he was in his absolute prime during the years he missed the WC and was virtually retired from international fb when he came back to play in 70 having already proven himself. Pele is the WC's greatest ever performer and he never even played in it at his best!

I may add Pele and all Brazilian team were domestic club players when they won '70 WC. That campaign still the best campaign of all times. Brazil won all matches, including the qualifiers. It did not even had a draw!

What a slap on Football Daily.
I'm biased when I say Pelé is the GOAT because I literally support the team he played for almost two decades but let's agree that he was at least ahead of his time, even when compared to other greats who played in the same era, like, for instance, Eusébio.

There is no greatest footballer of all time.
Football is an association sport, with 11 players per side.
Picking one player as the "best" is a travesty, an insult to the other 10 positions being played.

Maradona cheated in the world cup n should have been sacked instead of owning a hand held goal. Only a goal keeper is allowed to use his hands in a soccer match. Period. ( also players using hand to stop n pull opponents or stop a goal using hands should be red carded n repeated offenders should be banned from soccer)

Pele had played for fourteen years, most of his career, before yellow cards were introduced to protect forwards. Before then, defenders didn't have to worry about accumulating cautions for savage tackles. If Pele had the protections that Messi and others have today, he would have scored another two hundred goals in his career.

  • @stephanclemens4664

    1. That Argument is usually only used by very young people who imo get mostly blinded by the way modern television broadcasts the stuff with way more dynamic angles, Slowmotions, Cose Ups and moving cameras. In a lot of cases they also cannot understand how different equipment and rules really affect the game as they didnt witness the time. De Facto opposition was less good in the top tier but way more competitive in width as most teams are on a similar level, which today is not the case anymore. And the fact that modern players learned from the experience and knowledge from the old ones and would be unable to do what they are doing without it also doesnt seem to get trough. You need to first invent the Pistol before you can invent the machine gun. Simple as that.
    2. The brazilian league was far better then any european league back in Peles Time. People seem to assume that the power hierarchy in Football has alwas been the way it is now, but as a matter of fact a lot of the the leagues as we know them today are not existing, and the continent just comes out of the most devastating war ever fought with most of todays Powerhouses having had tremendous losses in Youth and infrastructure. Its no cooincidence that european football in the 50's & 60's was dominated by portuguese and spanish teams, Countries who were mostly affected on a lesser degree by the war.
    3. The fact Pele did have stellar teammates is not discussable, its just the truth and they were effectively able to win the worldcup just without him. That doesnt mean that Pele wasn't there best player, but it shows that they were'nt as reliant on him as for instance France was reliant on Platini or Zidane to get things done.
    4. Goal scoring records are decieving if you dont see them in context of the period. Pele still played a part of his career in the era of high scoring football. Then you have the 80's in which italian influence on the game and the 2 Point rule aswell as a 24 Team Worldcup with double group phases or group 3rds being qualified for the knockouts produced a very defensive and destructive mindsets in teams. It was ridiculously difficult to score in the 1980's. You could see the same happening at the 2016 Euro were a lot of teams played way more restrained as the motivation to go full throttle was downed by the tournament mode.
What i am trying to say is: Higher amount of goals does not necessarily relate to better player.
    5. You are spot on that point, even though at the Core its mergable with ur first argument. While of course players evolved, you can only play to the knowledge you have. What counts is the challenge. And the challenge and competion were comparable to now in the beazilian league, while the international challenge was less due to what i said in Point 2
    6. Actually its rathe same points 3. It doesnt really help his case that they were able to win it without him.
    7. Actually most of the players who are usually considered to be in the club of the "greatest" are offensive Midfielders. And the reason for that is that they are not only involved with finishing, but also in building and defending. Thats not necessarily fair but it is like it is and since Pele is largely viewed as a striker it leads many people to judge his influence on the game as less defining then for Instance Cruijff who really was heart & soul of the Dutch. This means their Goal scoring records are also less of an issue then with a striker.
Of course Pele is an all time great
