I discovered Zidane in 1996 during Euro 96 and his 1st season at Juve, he certainly had a rather special talent but had a certain physical difficulty which prevented him from being among the 10 best in the world at the time... but he improved enormously at Juve and I really realized how good he was during the tournament in Lyon in 1997... his prime for me was 1997 at 2004...then in 2006 it exploded during the CDM... Zidane is one of the 5 best players in history without any problems...
Zidane's prime is generally seen from 1998 - 2003. Peak tournament was Euro 2000.. he was simply brilliant. Best domestic season in terms of prime form and overall ability was 2000 - 2001 with Juventus.
I agree with most of what you wrote apart from the last statement. V close though. I think Zinedine Zidane in 2001/2002 season at RM was basically unbelievable. I think the 2002 world cup injury was a jinx to show he was still very human, else, he seemed anything but human. Zidane made less than 20mistakes in an entire season...
He absolutely shredded the World Cup 1998, but one can argue his BEST performances for France were 8 years later when he dragged an average team to the WC final. He was absolutely amazing and ninety minutes was never enough when watching him. The beauty and knowledge that no matter what happens he will keep the ball it’s just how he does it; incredible. The best ever. Brazil 0 France 1 he was unreal. I mean another level of midfield dominance. He had the low centre of gravity of a five foot something player despite being six foot three. This to me is something that gets overlooked.
Absolutely agree . This is what I keep telling the younger audience. Zizous performance in the 2006 World Cup game vs. Brazil was outstanding . He was simply majestic . 🎉

Euro 2000 against Portugal was the single greatest performance I have seen. I don't think he miss controlled one ball or miss placed one pass and he was constantly involved and under heavy pressure.
Zizou is the best ever for me.. I watched him play since 97 and never stopped till he retired .. The most skilful and technically gifted player I have ever had the fortune of watching.
Zizou was an artist. He doesn't have speed but he could still dribble past players in slow motion. His ball control, vision and passing, first touch, flair, control of the centre of the field was just a joy to watch.
Zidane wasn't a head-down power sprinter, but he was deceptively fast. When he did his roulette deep in midfield, skipping round the opposition closing him down, and then carrying it forward - he glided, he ran like a footballer not a sprinter, and was quick enough that only select few really fast opposition players could catch up with him. We need to remember that players aren't in 2 categories of fast and slow... there's everything in between Thierry Henry and Mark Bosnich. I would definitely say Zidane was probably around the top 25% for pace.
In his prime still at 34 when he made a Brazilian team with Ronaldinho kaka Ronaldo cafu and Carlos in the team look ordinary the most complete beautiful fluid player ever pure magic.
kudos for a good segment on Makelele, he was truly the unsung hero. they blabbed non stop about their super team of offensive players, it never occurred to them their success was due a powerhouse defensive midfielder.
His entire career IMO.... nobody had the silky-smooth and confidence and arrogance mix and gel so great that the guy is indeed the greatest midfielder of ALL TIME!!!!!!

Watching Football Italia on a Sunday on Channel 4, you were treated to some exceptional talent with the likes of Batistuta, Vialli, Ronaldo and Zidane. Euro 2000 was undoubtedly Zizou’s greatest international tournament. Now to rank him “prime years” would say between 2000-2003👈are the three seasons when Zidane was at his absolute peak (the last season at Juventus) & the first two at Real the second season in particular with Madrid.
They're too different to compare properly. Zidane was better at controlling games and played deeper than Messi and Messi is better higher up the field as a winger, striker or second striker. 1998 on international duty at the World Cup without a doubt but when it comes to club players and tournaments like CL then Messi was phenomenal and now he has a World Cup winners medal too which I don’t think anyone predicted but like Zidane in 2006 Messi was the driver behind their success.
He wouldn't of lasted at Manchester United as there is no way Ferguson would let a player be a passenger unless you were a striker and even then only Cantona and Ronaldo were afforded thst luxury. I think thats why Keane, Scholes and Giggs never got a ballon dor because they had to do just as much donkey work as attacking play and normally world class players didn't have to do that work so they could concentrate on magic. Other managers always used to ask Ferguson how he gets Beckham abd the other 3 work as hard as everyone else and his reply was that it is not about individual awards but about the team and having one or two world class players looking great is not about all 11 looking great, but if any of those players went abroad they would have all won ballon dors
He was actually more inconsistent than we’d think at club level & you hit the nail on the head how he dominated for 🇫🇷. I think slightly vague Club form (did he play better for Juve or Madrid lol) plays him out of truly threatening the Mt Rushmore of Messi, Maradona, Pele, Di Stefano & CR7 who were wonderfully consistent all around. Ability wise I can only compare him to Cryuff for being big but so balletic on the ball.
so inconsistent that he played 3 european cup finals (2 cl finals 1 uefa cup) with 2 teams from 96 to 98, won the wc, a year after without del piero out for injury the full season an other cl semifinal, the year after he won the euro with france, the next season he went to madrid for 78 mil ( ronaldo was paid 25 few years before, figo the season before around 50) he won immediately the champions league. very inconsistent...
Zidane was so inconsistent that we wonder when was his prime. He was underwhelming for Juve, then unverwhelming for Reall. Yes. He was underwhelming because he lacked consistency. He played good in tough matches indeed, but to win a title you don t need Zidane, you need a consistent player.
very true .. what a joke.. from 95/96 until 2001/02 he won a wc and the euro , 4 european finals ( 3 cl one uefa when it meant something) 5 european semifinals , 4 in a row, if you include the national team 7 in a row and 6 finals in 7 years. won the cl with one of the greatest goals ever made in a final, the semifinal in 97 against ajax ( one of the best teams at the time ) was unbelievable ( 6 - 2 ) he won it all. 3 times fifa world player of the year ( the best) voted by his coll. coaches and national captains ( 98- 2000- 2003). i didn't even mentioned the 2006 wc at 34 his last games as a footballer. you clearly watched him a few times, you never followed his carrer and didn't watch his games
You know nothing about football if you think it's all about stats goals and assists. How do you think a team would be if it was 11 Ronaldo s or 11 Messi? There would be no one in there half all just walking around waiting to be served. There is no stats on who controls the game, controls tempo, breaks up play, starts the attacks and makes it easy for Messi and Ronaldo so for me the goat has to always be a midfielder who is involved in everything
19997 Zidane with Juventus coached by Marcello Lippi was the real first year of Zidane as we know him..a champion …before that year Zidane was nothing…

i didn't even mentioned the 2006 wc at 34 his last games as a footballer. you clearly watched him a few times, you never followed his carrer and didn't watch his games
That's maybe Why he won everything a player Can win in a career, everything!! .
He was the football ⚽✨✋
Less goals, less assists, less ballon d'or, less trophies than Messi but sure he's the goat, how clueless is this guy?
He's a MIDFIELDER and was disqualified from two balon d'ors he's up there with Messi and Ronaldo my personal goat
You know nothing about football if you think it's all about stats goals and assists. How do you think a team would be if it was 11 Ronaldo s or 11 Messi? There would be no one in there half all just walking around waiting to be served. There is no stats on who controls the game, controls tempo, breaks up play, starts the attacks and makes it easy for Messi and Ronaldo so for me the goat has to always be a midfielder who is involved in everything
that's right, Zidane's football technique is far more complete than Maradona, Pele or Messi
I'd argue Guti was better than Zidane at Real Madrid.
19997 Zidane with Juventus coached by Marcello Lippi was the real first year of Zidane as we know him..a champion …before that year Zidane was nothing…
