Does Neymar Deserve So Much Criticism?

  • Brazilian superstar Neymar became the world's most expensive footballer when he left Barcelona to join PSG in 2017, but since then he has come in for an awful lot of criticism.
Following multiple Ballon d'Or podium finishes in previous years, Neymar didn't even make the 30-man shortlist in 2019, with many considering Premier League wide men like Sadio Mane, Raheem Sterling, and Mohamed Salah to have overtaken him in terms of the best players in world football.
In this video, HITC Sevens takes a look at Neymar; his past, present, and future, why he has become such a disliked figure in many quarters, and whether that criticism is reasonable or not.

Neymar became "overrated" almost the very moment he left Barcelona and to me the reason is very clear. It's because he left Barcelona. Majority of football "fans" are either in the Messi or Ronaldo camp(mostly Messi) and these Messi/Barca fanboys soon started hating on Neymar as he was no longer on Messi's side. It's these same people who call Pele an overrated fraud and worship Cryuff because the latter was once a part of Barcelona.

You're right. But in this season Neymar has proven he became more mature when it comes to diving and the off-pitch drama. He hasn't partied like he used to. For instance, it's the first time since he became a professional footballer that he stayed in Europe instead of going to Brazil for Carnival celebrations in february. Also, he postponed his birthday party because of an upcoming match, something he's never done before. If you watch a PSG match, you'll see the dives have decreased exponentially. As a brazilian, I'm happy to see Neymay finally realizing it was about time he acted like a man, not a boy. He still have time to win a Baloon D'Or and, in my opinion, depending on how far PSG go in this UCL, he might just make this season already.

    @Rogarcai 4 роки тому +7

    1. First off, Ronaldinho was effectively done at the highest level by age 27. He partied hard and would often come to training hungover. That’s not an example you want to follow.
    2. Football is a team sport, and like you said, Neymar is petulant. There are multiple reasons why he left Barcelona, one of them (in a addition to the ones you mentioned) was the fact that he wanted Barcelona to make certain changes like signing more of his mates in order to renew a contract. Like you said he probably learned from that Santos experience where they sacked the manager when he had a spat with him and he thought he could bend Barcelona backwards into doing what he wanted. The president wasn’t having it so Neymar left.
    3. It’s said that Neymar wants to join Barcelona, but he has literally sued the club 3 times for an unpaid loyalty bonus. Who claims to want to join a club and then sue them when you’re the one who decided to leave?
    4. He left Barcelona 2 weeks before the start of the season. That’s when he activated his release clause leaving the club with little time to find a replacement. If he really wanted to leave he could have said so initially and given the club enough time to find a replacement without having to overpay for Dembélé like they ended up doing.
    5. When you compare him to people like Mané and Sterling, sure, they may not have the raw talent that Neymar does, but I’d take either of them in a heartbeat before Neymar. You can’t play a team sport with a player that cares only about himself and is not professional enough to not go out partying every week, going on vacation without the managers permission (like he did at Barcelona in the final stretch of the season) slap opposition fans...
    6. He literally trolled PSG fans a few months ago by saying that his best memory was knocking PSG out of the champions league with Barcelona when they beat them 6-1. Like who does that? Seriously?
I don’t even care about the playacting, like you said, Neymar often doesn’t get the protection that he should. Some people criticize him for “showboating” but I never understood that argument. Those are people who don’t understand that football is and should be entertaining at the end of the day, and seeing Neymar, or anybody dribbling like that is a joy to watch.
I started following Barcelona because of Ronaldinho. Nevertheless he is a mother player whose prime was cut short because he didn’t take care of himself as much as he should. When he left, Barcelona was better off because more players were willing to work and out in the effort in training that translated into a better physical conditioning for everyone and thus better on pitch performances.
Sure, Neymar is talented, but again, if he can’t be trusted to be a professional in every sense of the word, then I don’t want those types of primadonna footballers at my club.
Fergie sold Ronaldo and they kept winning league titles. Sure, he’s a generational talent who is nowhere near Messi (ok maybe that’s an exaggeration) but he is not on Messi’s level. That’s like saying Gerd Muller was as good as Cruyff. That’s the level of logic most people have.

I know that CR7 is another story, and he is a professional. If Neymar has the work ethic of Ronaldo he would have probably won a ballon D’Or by now. Unfortunately for him, and the clubs he plays for, he doesn’t.
What I was trying to bring up with the CR7 situation is that players, as talented as they are, come and go and the club can keep winning titles regardless. There will always be good players to play for your clubs. Some may be better or worse but as long as you have a plan, like Fergie did, you’ll be fine.
Like the saying says, no player is bigger than the club, so no club should go out of their way to acquiesce to the will of a diva because he is talented.

In my opinion, Neymar is the second most talented footballer after messi. The problem? Attitude, work ethic, maybe diving, although his diving is to protect him from tackles. Basically, neymar got the talent of a Ferrari or a Lamborghini but he uses his talent as a Fiat. It's only my opinion , but he must improve his work ethic and manners. If he manages to do this, he can become the world's best player, in my opinion.

Someone who dives and complains as much as Neymar does on and off the pitch doesn’t deserve to be considered one of the best footballers in the world. He has amazing skills, pace and agility on the ball but then ends up on the floor when the defenders look at him the wrong way. It also takes away from players getting injured and/or serious fouls cause he has normalized diving in modern football. It’s a shame cause hard players that decide to play on after getting fouled do not get half the recognition he does. Still waiting for him to win a big tournament with Brazil and he can’t win a champions league without Messi and Suarez’s help. Not that people hate on him, he is extremely overrated and fakes the severity of challenges

I've never seen or heard anyone question his ability, the closest thing is some have said he's plateaued a bit, which is true to an extent
But the reason people criticise him and hate him (I can't effing stand him) is his cheating, diving, crying, and just his attitude, it's in the toilet, not Hatem Ben Arfa or Mario Ballotelli bad, not wasting his potential bad attitude, but his attitude means he's not making fans in a lot of communities
Think of it this way, if a player like that played in Sunday League, he'd have his legs snapped, and that's not an exaggeration, or if he played for the more old school English clubs (think Millwall, Wycombe, heck, even Burnley to an extent) he'd be chased out of the club, by their own fans

It's usually jornalists and gossip columnists who complain against Neymar. Never in my life have I ever heard of a sincere complaint made by coaches or teamates (besides Santos Coach Cuca, to whom he already asked pardon publicly, when he was a teenager). Even Messi (undoubtedly the greatest player of all) admitted the guy is simply WONDERFUL to work with. The same is true for the Brazilian National Team, PSG and pretty much everywhere he played (not to mention Barcelona and Santos). So... I think you have to qualify your opinion a little if you wanna be taken seriously and not seen as some type of resentful columnist (which is the type who generally detest his every move).

What bad attitude you`re all talking about? The press says bs about him, because people like it, but for the most part it's a lie. Neymar did not dive for two years, not once, everyone who watches his games knows about it. When he was diving in Barça, it didn’t bother anyone, but now that he is NOT diving in PSG, everyone repeats that he is a diver.
He has absolute discipline, he never misses training, he works in training and matches more than anyone else, which is constantly emphasized by the coach. Neymar is the leader of PSG, and the whole team adores him, as the Barça team loved him, and the Santos team before.
And where did this nonsense about fake injuries come from? A player cannot falsify an injury, not one, in each club there is a medical department that conducts examinations and confirms the nature and severity of the injury. All Neymar’s injuries were received on the field during the games after fouls, all were confirmed by the club’s doctors.
By the way, he was at his sister's birthday only in 2018, when he underwent surgery in Brazil after a leg fracture. The last two years, during the "famous" birthdays, he has been in Paris, but people repeat nonsense about specially missed matches.
Neymar has no bad attitude, he is not toxic and has never been, he does not violate discipline, and the fact that he loves parties does not affect his professional behavior.

I think there is a normal curve between brazilian players like neymar, ronaldinho and thousends and thousends exemples we can see arround Campeonato Brasileiro over the years, in our national star: ostentation is a will. When you became not only super famous but also bilionaire, you've got to research the time you lost. you've got to proof to yourself that you can, that you dont need to hardwork anymore. why they'll work hard when they can simply go party? they have money for that, they are famous, they have socialmedia atention, they have, now, what it was for few ones: a lot of money. ronaldinho and neymar had/has tallent to go more more futher that they got/get. but why they're gonne make if they allready have what they want - and even more? it happens with all nations and every labors where some people own, in a day-night, lot of money. its not a rule, but a normal curve. im telling about brazilian stars/football because its very normal to judge without analyse some social insues provoked by the capitalism way of life blaming persons for what is structural.

Neymar fell short on expectations, not because he plays at PSG, but because of how poor he is in regards to his medical condition (just look at Zlatan's time at PSG, no one said he became a worse player when he moved to France, quite the opposite I think). He's been out of the team squad due to injury on a consistent basis and, when you are a Ballon d'Or candidate, based on your talent, you also need to be consistent in regards to your presence on the field. And let me remind you that Neymar is known for having LOTS of fun when he's out with an injury. You won't see C. Ronaldo nor Messi partying the way Neymar does - not criticizing or approving what he does, he can do whatever he likes, but there's a reason as to why those two are on the top of their game every season.

As a Barcelona fan it obviously hurt when he left but bringing him back now may not be as good as it seems. Neymar is 28 which means that since he's a winger he is pretty much heading into the prime years of his career. The fact that he's extraordinarily injury prone really makes you wonder how long that peak in performance may last. The fact that PSG won't let him go for less than what they paid for him really makes a move to barcelona make less and less sense.

True, and there is nothing wrong in doing so. They are working in a short span career that doesn't really care for them.

If Neymar & Thiago stayed at Barça & they signed Laporte or De Ligt, they would've won at least 2 more CL in past 5 years.

What is wrong about this video is the fact that not one of us doubts that even today he is the complete all round winger and with a mythical sort of ability ,let's not forget that isn't something you just forget ,exhibition games with ex-legend players make us aware of the fact ...
What we doubt is his stance on things ..
Let me carry on with the thought.. The couple of years that made his reputation fall of a cliff was the period when he left Barcelona ,and at about the same era he started all of a sudden not being a leader to the Brazil squad .. These two facts. And then missing out on an important champions league knock out in which PSG got knocked out all be it through injury ..but still it was clear that moving away from Barcelona and Messi wasn't going to get him closer to self recognition .. What he forgot all about was that this is a team sport .. And moving away from a team that is the perfect article to a team that just tries to throw cash and move players around all the time and managers and just see what sticks isn't a move best for a player that is near his level.. What you do when you want to be recognised is you farm these champions league trophies while you can ,farm the amazing playing style that a front 3 of the MSN quality can get you .. create moments and create highlights and amass a trophy cabinet with some reputation (ligue a doesn't carry that weight).. He is now 28 ... he moved too soon ,he could still have moved now at a proper age ,and be it for England or Italy. He could be taking the mandle at Barca even. The other major factor is the Brazil appearances .. We all remember that rolling around the football pitch like 17 times at one tackle .. While he was playing for Barca at the early days he was at the team ,he seemed to be a little more timid on the pitch or let's better say he was still getting used to the city, continent , playing style ,not being the major key player of a squad etc etc , but he was really trying and was focused and well coached to match a playing style .. it was a slow nice burn ,and he was doing excellent ,he really was. At the same period whenever he played for brazil he really looked like a lion, he was fierce ,attacking at every moment from the wings and through the center ending up as a No.9, putting in the goals ,assist and efforts. But most importantly he looked like a leader to the rest ,both on and off the pitch. The slow burn at the same time with Barcelona was paying off ,Suarez was over the ban and was coming into the mix, the playing style of Barca was shifting away from just possession and was really pacy and fast ,including long balls ,but still keeping to its roots with players that can pass a ball around and keep doing their basics but adding the MSN style of attack as the cherry to the top. And mostly ,having won the treble and going into the next season they had created "fear" already at opponents. Put that special element ,put the actual raw talent of all 3 , Messi being reinvented ,and Suarez catching up to his former Liverpool levels of that last season.. And yet Neymar decides to f*ck off ..... What an illogical decision ... He could have farmed a couple more Champions League trophies right there ... And around that time he started falling over too much at opponent tackles , did that with Brazil as well ,and it would be a different story if it had been successful ,kinda like the hand of God ,and Henry's hand against Ireland .. But it was not ,and alongside his negative off the pitch stance at that point it only adds to the fire... And then he hardly pushed PSG to at least a semi in C.L ... Yeah he got Ligue A , but who cares ... And that "who cares" is a logical argument... Since we are talking of a player of his calliber.. He needed more meaningful moments at the international game of football than some good all round performances in French football if he was to be serial ballon d'or nominee and winner .. and a special magical Barca side could get you that. French football can become the elite in some years from now maybe ,who knows, but it is not right now. Same goes for Cavani ... He is an incredible striker .. imagine him at Atletico ,winning the Champions League in one of those two finals vs Real Madrid ... Different glory to his name right there ..

No one could ever question Neymar's talents, it's his attitude towards the game which has seen his stock drop to the levels that it has. Kaka, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo and Messi were/are all exceptional talents and they used those talents to serve their teams and football. Neymar's desire to win the Ballon D'or is all good and well, but soccer's a team sports and fans are always endeared to those who use their talents to better the game and those around them, a lot like Messi does.

that's the reason you can't judge a player on stats, although Neymar does have some of the best when not injured. Mbappe has more goals than him but everyone watchin PSG knows that while Mbappe is freaking great, Neymar is by far PSG's best player (hell with him PSG might have won last season's champions league instead of choking to an absolute average United side)

The thing with Neymar and also Messi, specially at home in Argentina and Brazil is, at this point, they haven't deliver the World Cup, and that the comparison with the previous cracks is inevitable, for Messi is Maradona and for Neymar is Ronaldo and Ronaldinho (u could add more). Brazil had a 24 year draught between 70 and winning in 1994 so for Neymar clock is ticking either they win in 2022 or maybe 2026 or he is out of the Brazilian pantheon of cracks, cause let me be clear for getting there in Brazil and Argentina you gotta have a WORLD CUP period. If Messi and Neymar don't get a World Cup they would be remembered as excellent Club players but they won't achieve legendary status that comes with a World Cup win.

Dude, nobody dislikes neymar because they think hes bad at the sport or because he likes to party. They dislike him because he's a diving little shit, he's 28 years old and still has the maturity of a toddler, he's selfish, and not a team player, and that's why he's wasting his career in paris instead of becoming a legend at Barca. The singlest biggest complaint about neymar is that he's selfish and not a team player, that's literally the reason he left Barca, and you completely failed to even mention it.

Calling him shit and overrated is unfair cos he’s just below messi and ronaldo but questioning his personal life is completely fine and his diving is misunderstood I think when that Colombian guy ended his World Cup and didn’t get sent off he started diving cos he never wanted that to happen again

Is Neymar one of the best footballers in the world? Yes. I'd put him at fourth, right behind Mbappe. That is part of the problem, he moved to get out of Messi's shadow and has ended up in the shadow (in part due to injury) of a younger more likeable player. Even if you think Neymar is still better than Mbappe (which I admit is very arguable opinion) he has been overshadowed. I think trying to get out of Messi's shadow showed a small mentality (like if you deserve the ballon d'or you should be able to show it next to Messi) and "me first" mentality that rubbed me the wrong way and I'd imagine a lot of other people too. His behaviour of trying to force the move back to Barca shows that he doesn't care for the team and all he wants is personal glory, his personality is simply not likeable. The quality of his footballing ability should not be in question, and anyone who doesn't have Neymar near the top of their current football rankings is mad, but fucking hell he's a prick.
