Its troubling to see that people cant see that Drake is clearly a corporate machine. He doesn't make art anymore all he cares about is his image and money, hip hop is just an aesthetic for him.
Drake is the antithesis of Kendrick, they stand for polar opposite philosophies when it comes to music. Kendrick is focused on cultivating art that last ages, compact and self standing sonic mosaics that stand the test of time for generations to come. If there is one thing about Kendrick's discographies it is that he makes classics, classic albums, classic songs, classic moments. Kendrick puts the art first before anything else, he is not concerned with the fame and his ego is not tied up with the popularity contest. Kendrick uses his platform and fame to discuss and shared deep imbedded societal issues and from this rhetoric around his music emerges. He is a deep and prolific writer that wants to make a change in the world one song at a time. Drake on the other hand loves the fame, and the popularity, I would not be surprised if Drake's main goal when he started rapping was to get popular so he could have sex with as many girls as possible. Drake is an innovator but his innovations are not net positive for the culture. Drake is an actor playing a role as a rapper, because of this he does not have the same love and dignity someone like Kendrick does. To Drake the music is a means to an end. Drake's main concern is the playification of music, hopping on trends, and most importantly exploiting the music to it's maximum. Drake does not seek to create art, he seeks to be the king of music content. This is why Drake is willing to use multiple Ghost writers and songwriters to use a copy and paste formula that, although is catchy offers no new perspective or insight into the creative mind of Drake. Drake lacks originality which before was the most important aspect of an artist. Drake has sent a president that good music sounds the same as other music. Whereas Kendrick wants to be so distinct and unique you could never mistake his art for content or a song from another rapper.
Thank you for this well-made video sharing opinions I've always held about Drake. Drake hasn't made anything beyond filler music for 5+ years, and the 100GBs only make it more true. He represents the corporate industry which is only there for the bag, not the art or sharing a meaningful message.
This was really enjoyable to listen to. I do agree that as much as Drake doesn't push his vision into the culture, he does influence the business part of musical production. The visions aren't aimed at the essences of projects, but if the project has to have an essence to begin with.
I still don't get why his situation only further incited "beef" where it's in the air who "wins" and who "loses"... like. if Drake abused of minors, that's it. Literally that's it. There's no thing to discuss or songs to make about that. He should face a tremendous loss of respect and estimation, and it should be investigated upon I'm not trying to pick on you, on the contrary. I really like this video format, it most definitely is a really healthy thing to add to your repertoire. The topics themselves, and your closing thoughts were really good. It's just that it really, REALLY baffles me that the situation has been treated as content, it feels like it is not being discussed around with the correct amount of seriousness to me, and that for some reason, he is being given a chance to "win". Like, what? By the logic of all of this, had Drake made better diss tracks, he would have redeemed himself, or at least, offset the negative impact of the allegation. THAT really sits wrong to me
This is honestly the most confusing aspect of diss track beefs. It seems that a bad diss track can end that artist's career, but reality exists outside the songs. If Drake had won would mean the accusations would be forgotten about and we'd all have to accept that Kendrick is a tiny footed domestic abuser? It's a strange world to me.
@ibpants it's more like kayfabe imo. we don't know for sure that drake is everything kendrick says he is, we do know he's a creep but not like a trafficker or whatever. neither drake nor kendrick have filed lawsuits because they don't want shit to be really uncovered. so I don't think we'll ever know
i think another way to approach it if artists do it at the end of their careers. Similar to how mac demarco released an album with 100+ "songs" which is more of a contribute to the work of the artist
I agree with your overall point about how drakes influence normally negatively impacts music culture, and how often he sacrifices artistic integrity when that is something we expect of people who make art. And I really hope I don’t sound like the weird Drake bots that replied hateful comments to everything on social media, but I do think that we associate a very nefarious intent when it comes to drakes capitalization of music. (Or atleast more nefarious than your average pop star) Like I have a lot of negative opinions towards drakes wave, riding, especially when it comes to things like dance hall, and what not but I don’t think that he made controlla, or this, with the explicit intent of trying to make money at the expense of his artistic integrity. I think he genuinely believe this is a cool or quirky way of releasing bts footage and leaks, just like he may have thought he was making a very creative and true to its roots song when he uploaded Controlla to soundcloud. Its not that big of a distinction at the end of the day because he still tries to capitalize off of bottom of the barrel ideas, but it feels like people give him a little too much credit as being this dastardly capitalist.
Definitely a fair point to consider, I do believe some of his actions are motivated by purely what he thinks is cool or quirky, but I definitely also believe money plays a huge role, especially since this is the man who made Toosie Slide
He's just been scrambling to find anything that sticks, now that he realizes that everyone is fucking sick of him now. In the age of streaming, it's easier than ever to dump low effort crap online and just let your fans sift through the garbage to find a gem. But that's probably not going to work for him anymore like it has with his official albums, and I think he knows this, hence why he's been releasing all this shit on the low instead of making a bigger deal out of it. The sad part is that he's only going to get worse from here. He's shown zero signs of growth or introspection, so prepare for more aimless junk from this guy until he's banished to the same table of irrelevancy that we put the former kings of content Maroon 5 at.
Think we’re already seeing a bit of that leak culture thing you’re taking about with examples like Kanye’s whole bizzare vultures 2 rollout being a compilation of leaks and sloppy decisions. The album is thrown together in the way a fan bootleg or local files library would be.
@@ibi7928 If I had more time to make this one I would definitely have mentioned the vultures 2 thing, it’s another great example of just music as content, especially given the AI stuff and Kanye ripping songs from UA-cam leaks.
As a Kendrick Stan this is one of my favorite moves by Drake, got to give him props, even if it’s based on desperation. You should look into how it was during the blog era Datpiff/LiveMixtapes. Felt like the wild Wild West when artist said f the label and just dropped when they wanted. Wiz Khalifa doing vlogs with snippets from songs off of Kush and OJ. Gucci dropping 40 mixtapes in one year. Drake is essentially tried to recreate that feeling.
I think Kendrick’s murder of Drake effectively stunted this whole situation. I doubt this Drake drop will perpetuate the watering down of media as much as it would have if Kendrick didn’t do what he did. I don’t want to be that guy always talking about the Kendrick beef but he truly saved us from Drake, even if we weren’t fans of his.
Congrats on your new job, and I definitely agree… I like the latto track. But overall this apparent leak felt so soulless. Drake is very talented and knows how to navigate the music industry. But this leak felt to force, drake taking this route is like begging his fans to like him ((which they already do))
Well Content for the sake of marketing is always valid… But Drake rarely makes any Art any more. I hope he takes the message Kendrick send him to heart, and the PartyNextDoor Collab album is not just more content. People have been anticipating that collab forever. Most of those people are his most loyal fans so he really should not mess this up. As people are more aware of his wrongdoings than ever he needs to lock in. The Songs he just released within that leak where just empty to me, i didn’t like them.
I wonder what’s your thoughts on it now, it seems like 100 gigs was him experimenting what he can do outside of his label. I wonder does that change how you feel, potentially these types of moves could start to change the music industry.
This only works for famous artists BTW. People want a peak behind the curtain of people who the normies don't have access to in any way. Also data dumping of unfinished songs and footage isn't anything new. This has happened in other genres a lot more. Even the ghost series by NIN was basically a dump
I hope you don't take this as snark because it's genuinely meant to be helpful. The correct phrase is "Could _not_ care less," as it is not possible for you to care less than not caring at all. If you "could care less," that implies that you _do_ care and there is room for you to lower the amount of caring. If you meant the latter, okay, but if you meant the former, my comment might be helpful. I only mention it because it jumps out to me as both a writer and an English teacher.
In many ways.. Drake is the hero we need. Sure he isn't the artist that art needs. But artists also complain about alogirthms, systems, art not getting views and streams and artists getting paid nothing etc etc. Drake hacked the system and exposed it, unknowingly. The system needs to change.

Tbf this is a lot better than the last time Drake leaked his junk on the internet
😂😂😂

@unluckydreamer so drake is the only hip hop rapper that cares about his image and money ?
@@miles2176no but he’s a big enough mogul to shadow the others who do it too

Precisely why I was behind Kendrick waging war on Drake from the start. The man is a leech on hip-hop 😑
