Hi I am new to the channel. I have just started watching your videos from the beginning. I am up to this one. My partner and i with my 9 year old son also decided to take the plunge and leave the city and bought a property to become more self reliant. I have planted over a hundred fruit trees and am busy building a food forest. I call it my chicken forest because i plan to release my hens in it once the trees have established themselves. It has been a journey with lots of ups and downs. But the truly amazing thing about it is, i am excited about life again. We are just entering our third year now and have made tremendous strides. We are in the freestate. So nice to know we are not alone and that other south afticans are doing the same.
Welcome! Thanks for watching our journey and great to hear more people are exploring becoming more self-reliant. There are quite a number of people doing what we're doing - I just wish there were more South African Homesteading Channels we could all watch and learn from, but in the same sense its a lot of work and very time consuming to make videos, edit them and maintain a channel - while working!! Anyway keep up the amazing work! Over 100 fruit trees, just wow. We'd be happy with ten 😆
I stumbled on this video! What a great potential! It is a clean canvas except for the few buildings. I will definately design it according to permaculture standards... Plant the water first! Get a proper permaculture design if possible, include a veggie garden with/and a herb garden close to the kitchen, a foodforest, compost 'factory', chickens to support the compost factory and to clear the veggie garden from pests before plantibg again... Incorporate a chicken tractor into your vegetable garden to save you lots of pests, money and time.. Invest in a green house so you can plant seeds... Seedlings has become extremely expensive to buy! I'll have a space in the garden to relax... Have a small indigenous pocket forest to draw wildlife to the property... Have a bee-hive or two, plant flowers... I'm not sure if the land will support a cow during summer? What a great opportuninity for you and your wife! Enjoy the journey!
You have such a beautiful place. Its big enough for a garden and a chicken coop. We are gong back to the way our forefathers used to live. Growing our own food and not relying on retailers. Its a good decision.
Thanks so much. Yes, I believe we have to back to the way our forefathers used to live, and we're quite happy to do this. Short to medium term plan is exactly as you say - veggie garden and chickens to start - cant wait! Thanks so much for watching!
Good job, nice. You are going to have to see how your area responds to planting and if you have some micro climates, so you can diversify your crops. I am in Cape Town and started a veggie patch in my back yard and a food forest in my front yard.
The place is really large enough for chicken coop,pig-sty(i would add some, for they breed quickly and more piglets, and some few goats and a fish pond....i think planting fruit trees that will yield for future...more blessings with your homestead Sir
Thanks so much! Yes, definitely a chicken coup in the future and we have started growing a few fruit trees from seed. Elsa also wants a fish pond so you're so right 😁👌🏻 Thanks for watching and many blessings to you too!
I truly love your chanel, you should also give yourself 100 days of growing your own food that would last you 2 years eish things are expensive especially food
Hi Sizwe! Thanks for the support! Yes, we plan to start a garden in the near future when we are more permanently on the Homestead because as you say - food is getting very expensive and also we want to go more the organic route when we grow.
Love watching your channel! So glad I finally get to see the property! Wow yes tgat veggie garden will be stunning. In that open area where you want to do mielies I was thinking maybe start working towards a food forest? It will take a couple years, but once established, it will produce without your constant input. Time become your most valued possession. You can also start seeding more cover crop/variety on the pasture bits once you can keep the chicken out of it so they dont eat all the seeds. Once fertility and yield pics up, you can get a cow to feed all your chicken, your pigs, and yourselves! Plus, she will give a calf to butcher or sell.
Nothing comes ovHer night and slow and steady wins the race. I dump a ton ideas maybe but its just ideas and I know it cost money and few of us who are homesteaders or wanna-be’s have a lot of that.
Try to look at basic needs: Shelter, water, and food. Keep that as basics and work independence bit by bit in each of those. There is so many dreams and sometimes its hard to know what to do first. You are doing an amazing job in the shelter, already starting to think about that veggie garden, and water storage! A big step in each box. Man Im so happy for yall!
Thanks so much for watching and also your positive input. A food forest sounds like a good idea as well, chickens definitely and Elsa has also been talking about a cow - but that would have to be in the distant future when we are more permanently on the homestead. As you say, there is so much to think about but we're just focusing on the basics right now which I think is a good approach. Thanks again for the support and encouragement! We really appreciate all our subscribers!!
Looks amazing guys. Great plans and yes Rome isnt built in a day. Proud of you guys for taking the first steps to follow your dreams and a darnngood idea to be self reliant.
Aaah this is so stunning love it. It’s big enough and looks manageable. When you showed the fence we laughed a little and we were like “that needs to go” 😂😂 everything is so relatable, the need to get away from the government is growing and we need to take control of our food and our health ! Can’t believe you went back to bed 😂😂
Yeah we're very happy here and yes, we're fleeing from the government as much as possible! That "fence" is about to become history!!! Elsa was still in bed so I went back for a snuggle, it was cold out there 😂
Hey There. Enjoying your vids and content. One issue I thought I'd you know about... your volumes between voice and music is really bad. Voice too soft and music VERY loud 🤦🏻♂️🤣😂🤣. Not sure if you are aware so thought I'd let you know. Looking forward to your next vid 👍🏻👌🏻👍🏻👌🏻🥳🥳
Ahh thanks soooo much for letting me know. My mom watched the video last night and said exactly the same thing. We appreciate your feedback and thanks for letting us know - and thanks for coming along on our journey. I will definitely pay more attention to this when I do my editing!
@@overberghomesteading Haha - now imagine my scenario... watching the vid while baby playing in her play pen - up the volume on my surround sound to hear what you are saying and the BOOM the music kicks in - my little monster got such a fright hahhahhahahhah. But cool thanks for responding! Glad you didnt take this as me being difficult as lots of people get defensive haha. Keep up the awesome work!!
Where abouts in the Overberg are you? We came to SA last year to find a plot or small farm to do exactly the same. We have not found our plot yet though. Good luck.
Hi There! Thanks for watching our journey, much appreciated. We're in a small little village called Baardskeerdesbos. There are soooo many people looking at getting off grid and away from the big cities. Good luck with your search - we hope you find a piece of ground.
@@overberghomesteading Hi, I know BBos. We have been looking at the Stanford area but prices have gone up significantly. But I am sure we will find our spot. Good luck to you!
To each his own, of course, but to take out those glorious nasturtiums is sad. Especially as they are not just a visual delight, but a culinary one as well, at the same time enhancing the looks of salads, sandwiches ... They contain tons of vitamin C. The leaves, put on wounds, act as an antiseptic. Anecdotal evidence praises them as useful against urinary infections, coughs and bronchitis.
Hi - yes crime is a problem throughout South Africa and no-one is immune to it. But we have chosen to follow our dreams and build our homestead. There is petty crime in our area but not a lot as far as we know. People we speak to in our area are generally happy and not affected too much by it.

The area is giving a vibe & life ❤❤ very greener for grazing.A new friend here! Cant wait to see more growth into your new homestead
Thanks for watching! Yes, the neighbours horses and cows love it on our plot - will be posting some more videos in the future.
Good to hear a homesteader from South Africa for a change ❤😊 Congratulations on purchasing the land 🎉🎉🎉
Thanks so much! Yes, still so much to do but we're getting there! Thanks again for watching our journey.
Really enjoyed your tour. 🎉
Glad you enjoyed the tour, we're excited to see what the future holds here!

Do get rid of your old baths and shower pan as they make for very nice raised beds especially for growing herbs.
Absolutely! We're thinking of using one of the baths for worm castings as well. Thanks for the advice and thanks for watching!
