This is one of the most understated videos I've ever seen. That mechanism is mind-blowing, while at the same time it's basically a wooden toy. Inspiring!
I've been with you for a while, but only now found out that you actually invented this contraption. I thought you made your own version of an existing machine. Now I'm even more impressed. I hope the commercial version of this machines makes you good money. You've earned it!
Wow, just stumbled across this randomly while looking at woodworking videos, this guy is a genius, very few people have a mind that works like his, I'm surprised this machine was never mass produced commercially.
Matthias, I'm tempted to say that you should have your own television program but then I think that television isn't worthy of your level of skill and creativity. It's a blessing that you share these videos with the YT community. Wonderful work!
+Dan OBrien It actually wasn't, race is directly defined as a subspecies of the human species. So a race cannot by definition include all of Homo sapiens.
Wow... I am speechless, jaw-dropped, do not know what to say... and "I ain't a type that wows easily". That level of engineering, craftsmanship, skilled woodworking, creativity and clarity of explanations... that rarely comes together. Keep it up and thanks for sharing!
Mat, does the word "genius" ring a bell? You are incredible. I hope you have a good patent attorney. You are only steps away from be a millionaire. I am in awe of you abilities.
I'm addicted to these videos. They're actually really well made with well placed cuts etc, and the subject material is good too, of course. Keep em coming Matthias!
Just WOW - there is no other word for this handy invention. A pantograph is well known, but to build it so nicely and versatile is new to me. Thanks for the videos !
Its a wonder companies are not interested in this type of machinery. This would be the best machine to have in any workshop. I know this would be well used in my shop. You are gifted with such amazing talent to come up with many ideas. Thumbs up to you !
i've watched lots of your videos, and i'm consistantly impressed by the way you experiment, test, and reconfigure your machines. clearly by recreating some stuff that has already been made, you are teaching yourself. i like that you show mistakes in your videos too. and simple things like the glued up joint testing shows me you are more than a woodworker, but a scientist in the truest sense of the word. i have not commented before, but i've got to say: this machine is seriously cool. rock on.
Well done on this - i was so impressed by the design, imagination and perfection of cut your design makes, it brought a tear to my eye, just because i'm proud for you. Definately going to be a lovely build project for me this summer!!! (can't be doing wood-work in the workship in the cold of winter - brrrr!!!) May i ask about your background? Questions like what do you do as a job spring to mind. I also imagine you did well at mathematics and physics/tech when your we at high school, just because those are skills required to come up with this concept and to understand the device itself, though im sure trial and error might have been a contributing factor.
I can just imagine how proud are you :) I am rookie programmer, and when i make some simple web app, I can look at it's code or use it for hours without getting bored.. Bravo!
+brad ford technically, I guess it could be used. The only problem would be that it's a 2:1 ratio, meaning your template needs to be twice as big as your finished product.
I had forgotten my subscription here until you commented. I'm glad to "rediscover" your channel! Reminds me to make use of my own 3D duplicator, gathering dust in storage. Thanks!
Mattihias you are a genius. Im a 12 yeared old kid from Spain and I apreciate your work very much the firt video I watched from you was the gears video and since that moment I´ve wanted to discover more about the manipulation of wood, please forgive me if I wrote something wrong as I said before I´m from Spain and I´m learning english at my Cambridge classes at school. Hope you read this, If you don´t I don´t matter I will be happy from writing this too.
Hi Matthias. Bought your plans for the Pantorouter last month. Built it and have not stopped using it since!! Absolutely fantastic. Can't watch enough of your videos. Next project is going to be the tilting router lift. Keep the ideas coming - Tony Malta.
Oh man, this is so fantastic, it hurts! Boy, do I want one. Seriously, Matthias, this is the best jig (if you can call it that) that I have ever seen. I just came across this video because of a UA-cam suggestion. I am glad I did.
Well, Mr. Wandel, you've outdone yourself! By far the most impressive, in terms of potential, of any machine you've made. I'm absolutely astounded that no one has thought of this before. Hats off to you! Chuck
This is an awesome machine. As a wood worker myself I have always loved the beauty of the different type of joints. I would love a machine like this as it would help me get my furniture making business off the ground. Keep up the good work.
Sincerely, wow. No wonder you have so many subscribers, and now one more. Well done. It was cool when I realized the two to one reduction also cuts any template errors in half, i.e., if you want 1/64th” accuracy in a pin you only need 1/32” accuracy on the template. There’s other really cool genius level stuff here too. I can’t wait to see your other videos.
Much respect to you good sir. We live better lives then those of our parents and grandparents because of people like you with a passion to invent things. Keep up the good work
+K Rock Pretty justified and reasonable in my experience. All the news about "hoverboards" bursting in to flames is because the Chinese flooded the market with cheaper clones without voltage regulators etc to cut costs. China seems to be all about superficially looking the same at a price cheap enough that people will 'have a go'. Some shit is fine, a lot is just worthless.
+Yeager Mcbipper Wrong. My dad spends weeks in China every year trying to figure out what materials in the product he designed were switched out by the Chinese manufacturer for cheaper versions that won't even do the job. He has the same conversation over and over... "No, when I said use this grade of metal, I meant it, and I had a good reason." And I've heard exactly the same thing from people who consulted on their rail projects, tunnels for roads, etc. "Yes, I told you if you used that kind of concrete the tunnel would collapse and kill people, and that's why I had you sign this statement showing that I warned you of exactly that." TL;DR - The Chinese constantly switch out the materials needed for cheaper ones.
Pluxar The lever ratios required to scale down a large motion to a smaller one are Physics 101. There are also many lessons on mechanical advantage and rotational vs. linear motion that can be demonstrated. I said it was a "physics teacher's dream" - the pantorouter would be an incredible teaching tool. Understand?
Anthony Locascio my brother recommended *WoodBlueprints .Com* for the best woodworking plans and I couldn't agree more after getting it. Tons of amazing projects and plans there........
You just don't stop amazing me with your ideas and constructions. There should be a prize, award or reward for such a creative person as you Matthias. Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year for you!
Wouldn't it make more sense to make a pantograph machine that makes a 1:1 copy of the model instead? That way, you can just use the exact size of tenon you need instead of having to make a 2:1 template that has no other use than being a template?
+Chairman Meow 1:2 gives the machine more mechanical advantage (making moving the router head easier around the template). I am guessing this also allows you more control of the router head.
I love your brain. I'm learning so much from these shockingly, informative videos, that which you've given us all for free. Thank you good sir. And thank you for all that are to come.
Further to my last comment, I think this is a technological breakthrough. I'm a seasoned woodworker and I've not seen anything like this in router fixtures since the dovetail jig. I really think you've got something here!
+James R Also if you have the skills to build one why spend out loads of money for a factory made unit when you can make one for a fraction of the cost
I suppose that could be done. Personally, Id just use a lathe - you get a much more consistent finish that way. And making identical legs on a lathe is not that hard.
Your machines make my brain happy. It's like watching an inventive elf in santa's workshop. Because of you I daydream of being a carpenter. I'm not kidding, they're so cool!!
its actually pretty complicated due to the making of the panto graph mechanism along with the required of a ball bearing, something which we couldn't manufacture for most of human history. even ball point pens even though in concept are simple they were not able to be created properly until the 1940's despite being known and patented in 1888. and even then the process was hard to the point where a ball point pen costed 150 dollars per pen in todays money.
This is just amazing. The possibilities are endless and you should be proud of your invention. Talk to someone to see if it could go into production. I am sure the demand would be huge but make sure your get a patent otherwise those corporate machines will do what ever it takes to take your idea and make it their own. WELL DONE :):)
Mathias your videos are great, I have learned a lot from them, it is unfortunate that here in Brazil we do not have access to such tools and woods, but I'm your follower number one
That's really awesome that you built that. We have something very similar in my employer's basement that was used before CNC became very practical. It was used to rout parts made out of plastics . I bet if you sold the blueprints for $50 a set you could make a nice piece of change.
This is one of the most understated videos I've ever seen. That mechanism is mind-blowing, while at the same time it's basically a wooden toy. Inspiring!
Where it all began! So cool to see what this idea has developed into today.
I remember watching this when it came out 10 years ago. Still amazing to watch.
I've been with you for a while, but only now found out that you actually invented this contraption. I thought you made your own version of an existing machine. Now I'm even more impressed. I hope the commercial version of this machines makes you good money. You've earned it!
Blows my mind how smart this guy is. I have trouble putting furniture together.
+MattShea It's quite cool seeing you here, Mattshea
+MattShea Oh, it's Matt. Neat.
+MattShea Hallo matt! :D
Matt! I guess you like magic designs that do amazing things too!
Oh hi matt! didnt expect u here!
Wow, just stumbled across this randomly while looking at woodworking videos, this guy is a genius, very few people have a mind that works like his, I'm surprised this machine was never mass produced commercially.
That was incredible. The precision of those joints alone gave me a semi. You're doing amazing work Matthias!
👍
amazing😲
Matthias, I'm tempted to say that you should have your own television program but then I think that television isn't worthy of your level of skill and creativity. It's a blessing that you share these videos with the YT community. Wonderful work!
Its men like this that help further progress the human race
+Dan OBrien Agreed.
+Dan OBrien bingo
+Dan OBrien Human species*
Rick Muller
"Race" was correctly used in this statement. Your analysis was unnecessary but appreciated.
+Dan OBrien It actually wasn't, race is directly defined as a subspecies of the human species. So a race cannot by definition include all of Homo sapiens.
I have no interest in woodworking or crafting of any type, yet I find myself watching your vids with a sickening enthusiasm. You're a genius!
I work in a fabrication shop and this is one of the coolest tools I've ever seen.
Wow... I am speechless, jaw-dropped, do not know what to say... and "I ain't a type that wows easily". That level of engineering, craftsmanship, skilled woodworking, creativity and clarity of explanations... that rarely comes together. Keep it up and thanks for sharing!

Matthias you are my fricken' hero.
Just WOW - there is no other word for this handy invention. A pantograph is well known, but to build it so nicely and versatile is new to me. Thanks for the videos !
These things always introduce some error. Making the templates twice the size makes them easier to make by hand and more accurate for the cut.
i'm following Matthias for years now and I knew the pantorouter but i didn't know it was his invention!! this man is a legend
You are top of Reddit, you deserve such recognition. Watched all your videos pretty much and it was time well spent I can tell you that :)
Its a wonder companies are not interested in this type of machinery. This would be the best machine to have in any workshop. I know this would be well used in my shop. You are gifted with such amazing talent to come up with many ideas. Thumbs up to you !
The triple mortise and tenon respects the wood grain. This must be a tremendously strong joint.
i've watched lots of your videos, and i'm consistantly impressed by the way you experiment, test, and reconfigure your machines. clearly by recreating some stuff that has already been made, you are teaching yourself. i like that you show mistakes in your videos too. and simple things like the glued up joint testing shows me you are more than a woodworker, but a scientist in the truest sense of the word. i have not commented before, but i've got to say: this machine is seriously cool. rock on.
Ikea has met it's match. I know nothing about wood working, but this was awesome to watch!
This far exceeds Ikea quality. It's like comparing Einstein to my Elementary Gym/Science teacher.
Ikea is overpriced piece of shit
Grim Reaper no, Ikea is well marketed piece of shit, just like apple and other brands
You are the idol of so many DIY carpenters in my country
Well done on this - i was so impressed by the design, imagination and perfection of cut your design makes, it brought a tear to my eye, just because i'm proud for you. Definately going to be a lovely build project for me this summer!!! (can't be doing wood-work in the workship in the cold of winter - brrrr!!!)

the only one carpenter around the world who shares his talent with everybody .....warm greetings from mexico
I'm a sculptor, an artist, a woodworker, a member of Mensa. Yet, this video makes me feel like a naive child. You sir, are very impressive.
I am in awe of your machine. I could watch those cut outs all day long and still be amazed.
PATENT IT
This or your idea will get stolen
+AreGamingHD Someone is manufacturing this already. They offered Matthias royalties but he declined.
+John Smith not calling anyone ignorant ITT but i cannot stress this comment enough.
+John Smith He made it public anyway.
+Matthew Snell He didn't decline check his website.
I can just imagine how proud are you :) I am rookie programmer, and when i make some simple web app, I can look at it's code or use it for hours without getting bored.. Bravo!
Hi there, could the pantorouter be used as a copy carver?
brad ford No.
+Jacob Edward He made a jig for his tablesaw that uses wooden gears, I'm guessing like you said he made em on the pantorouter.
Thanks!
1:00 nooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
+SpookDogg I regret that I can only thumbs-up this comment once
+SpookDogg can u explain, i dont get it
+Wolf Man Lyken it's sounds like it's going "nooOOOOOOO" when it starts cutting
+SpookDogg OMG, I can't stop hearing it this way now XD
Slim Nasty ohhh thnks
Mattihias you are a genius. Im a 12 yeared old kid from Spain and I apreciate your work very much the firt video I watched from you was the gears video and since that moment I´ve wanted to discover more about the manipulation of wood, please forgive me if I wrote something wrong as I said before I´m from Spain and I´m learning english at my Cambridge classes at school. PLEASE patent this before someone steals it!
he was offered royalties for manufacturing and declined. He's a saint.
+Dominic Sosa or an idiot.
+Johnny Threefour he probably doesn’t care about the money or who uses ut
Too late! Some Chinese company is probably making a cheaper version made out of balsa wood. Lololol
+tankmaster1018 something that has been published can not be patented
Hi Matthias. Bought your plans for the Pantorouter last month. Built it and have not stopped using it since!! Absolutely fantastic. Can't watch enough of your videos. Next project is going to be the tilting router lift. Keep the ideas coming - Tony Malta.
They should make a new TV show à la style of Breaking bad with Matthias Wandel as leading character. Badass.
I can actually see it, way too funny!
It is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen in my life. I literally enjoy and smile while he makes pieces that fits perfect to each other.
Maybe I'm just a geek, but is this not like... The coolest thing ever?
He might hqve alien knowledge? Maybe...
Oh man, this is so fantastic, it hurts! Boy, do I want one.
Seriously, Matthias, this is the best jig (if you can call it that) that I have ever seen.
I just came across this video because of a UA-cam suggestion. I am glad I did.
Do you use math or trial and error to calculate the 2x template?
I seriously wish I had 1/16th of your talent. These videos never cease to amaze and inspire me. Thanks so much!
Front page of reddit!! wooh! well done!
Well, Mr. Wandel, you've outdone yourself! By far the most impressive, in terms of potential, of any machine you've made. I'm absolutely astounded that no one has thought of this before. Hats off to you! Chuck
please say you patented this
I'd buy one if he starts making them, and I'm not even a woodworker.
This is an awesome machine. As a wood worker myself I have always loved the beauty of the different type of joints. I would love a machine like this as it would help me get my furniture making business off the ground. Keep up the good work.

+JeefCakes More than 3/4 of the shit in your house was made in China or Taiwan (for all intents and purposes, basically China too)
I wish I was smart enough to comprehend how truly excellent you are.
This is a physics teacher's dream.
Anthony Locascio This has nothing to do with physics...
Pluxar The lever ratios required to scale down a large motion to a smaller one are Physics 101. Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year for you!
I don't even know why I'm here... I have finals in 3 hours...
ahaha :D
How did finals go?
You probably learnt far more watching this!
Any chance of an update on those finals?
Oh hey this is the first video of yours I saw! Subscribed for nearly 9 years, what a trip.
Wouldn't it make more sense to make a pantograph machine that makes a 1:1 copy of the model instead? That way, you can just use the exact size of tenon you need instead of having to make a 2:1 template that has no other use than being a template?

It also allows for greater accuracy.
+Ian Rutkosky: Yeah, every mistake you make with your hand is a half as significant at the actual drill bit.
+Papooch that is wrong
Nack Jicholson To my best understanding, I'm right. Either prove me wrong and correct me or don't comment at all.
WOW oh WOW! That is one of the most ingenious and fascinating woodworking things I have ever seen. Congratulations! Cheers!
Somehow my Lego toy city I made as a kid doesn't seem so impressive now lol.
I love your brain. I'm learning so much from these shockingly, informative videos, that which you've given us all for free. Thank you good sir. And thank you for all that are to come.
cool invetion, you look a little like the dude from honey i shrunk the kids.
Wolf Man Lyken lmfao
Mathias, more interesting than what you make are the jigs and "machines" that you create. You are a genius. !!!
The 21st century Leonardo daVinci
Not me, but a guy I know in Japan has got an all-metal version for sale. Click thru to the website, linked from the pantorouter main page.
Like a manual wooden CNC machine.
+scottisdope exactly what I was thinking haha
Further to my last comment, I think this is a technological breakthrough. I'm a seasoned woodworker and I've not seen anything like this in router fixtures since the dovetail jig. I really think you've got something here!
МОЛОДЕЦ.
You are a truly brilliant person...thank you for being here on YT
I ask this in all seriousness...
What is your IQ?
You are a genius man.
Probably into the 160s, Im a 139er and I could never come up with this Hahahaha. This are the sort of people that push the world forward.
What can I say, that hasnt already been said. Fantastic creativity, and very well presented.
i just spend 4 mins watching a guy carve wood. And it was glorious.
WOW!!! from an air raid siren to the pantorouter, very cool, I am very impressed, thanks
this already exists lol but better engineered. Had one in my high school.
+James R Look at the date on the video.
+Matthias Wandel ohhhhhh shhhhiiitttttttttt, my bad dogg
+James R you must be new kid
yes im 4 years old.
+James R Also if you have the skills to build one why spend out loads of money for a factory made unit when you can make one for a fraction of the cost
I suppose that could be done. Personally, Id just use a lathe - you get a much more consistent finish that way. And making identical legs on a lathe is not that hard.
Mortises are multiple Morty's right?
Norm from this old house use to be my hero after seeing this you are my new hero !!!!! this is fricken unbelievable you rock!
Super satisfying to see this machine ease its way through the wood
Kudos from a woodworking debutante. Your work is truly awesome.
Your machines make my brain happy. It's like watching an inventive elf in santa's workshop. Because of you I daydream of being a carpenter. I'm not kidding, they're so cool!!
MAN PATENT THIS THEN SHOW US,
you need to be rewarded for your inventions
You are brilliant! Keep up the good work, I love seeing videos of reinventing new methods for old crafts.
I was subbed to you and watch this video 6 years ago, I really hope you're getting what you deserve from this Matthias :)
The dowell cutting later in the video is amazing!! Love your work!
I'm not a wood-worker or anything, but this is impressive. Kudos for your invention!
This has got to be one of the best woodworking machines ever made, this cant be new can it? Way too impressive to be a first. Great work
it's crazy to think that millions of years have gone by without something as simple and efficient as this being invented
its actually pretty complicated due to the making of the panto graph mechanism along with the required of a ball bearing, something which we couldn't manufacture for most of human history. even ball point pens even though in concept are simple they were not able to be created properly until the 1940's despite being known and patented in 1888. and even then the process was hard to the point where a ball point pen costed 150 dollars per pen in todays money.
Bandsaw, clean it up with a belt sander. he templates are twice as large and only need to be made once, so it's no big deal.
Any that will fit. Best one with a 3.5" diameter body. Click thru to the description for more info.
This is the first video I've seen of yours Matthias, this machine is ingenious! Great work
It's so simple yet so amazing. It's a wonder there isn't something like this on the market yet.
This video is one of the greatest revelations I've seen in my lengthy lifetime. Clearly brilliant, and should be shown at all Feminist Conventions.
Yes, see video description.
You like to work with wood so much your machine is mostly wood. I love it!
You Sir, are a genius!! Fantastic workmanship and planning making that. Well done!
That's really awesome that you built that. We have something very similar in my employer's basement that was used before CNC became very practical. It was used to rout parts made out of plastics . I bet if you sold the blueprints for $50 a set you could make a nice piece of change.
Dude!!! You have the Craziest stuff!!!!!! Your mind works in overdrive!! Killer invention!!
Yes. click he link in the description.
I don't remember. I was also revising the plans and documenting at the same time.
