  • In this video, I'll show you how to install Oxford Heated Grips. For this installation, I'm working on a 2018 Ninja 1000 / Z1000SX. Since it is a universal part, the process is the same or similar for other bikes.

    I installed 2 pairs a couple months ago. One on my 17 plate and one on my friends 18 plate ... it's identical that's for sure.
    Some extra tips:
    Be carefull not to cut deep in the grip on the throttle side to prevent cutting the plastic tube which is underneath it, the one with the ridges.
    About the ridges, you can cut them easily with a sharp knife too ;)
    They have to go off anyway because otherwise the throttle movement will be affected.
    5:50 No need to cut those grip-ridges off ! While mounting the steering weight on the throttle side again I putted 2 small washers so the steering weight wasn't pushing to the side of the grip anymore, not affecting the throttle movement. When mounting them again, put blue locktite on the screws again. And do use the superglue .... but first make some marks to align them on the handlebars so you can position them quickly in the correct position.
    Mine came with big ugly white connectors so I cut them all off and soldered them together. I didn't like them at all and they were way to big to tuck them nicely away and watch out with those bullet connectors. Aftermarket ones don't allways have the same size like the OEM ones !
    My bracket was blank but I painted it black first.
    Underneath the seat it's fused with a 15amp fuse. I did some tests before installing them and they only use a max of 4amp in 100% mode. In all the other modes it sends full current pulses to the grips. So I changed the fuse to a 7,5A one. My satnav is connected there too ... 7,5A is more then enough.

    Thanks for the tutorial! I didn't sand down the throttle tube enough and I got most of the grip on except for the last 3/8 inch that wouldn't budge. I didn't want to reef on it too much so ended up taking the cable housing apart (super easy) to slip the throttle tube off to get a better look at things. Realized how delicate the tube was but that I could get some leverage on the fitting that holds the cables. Wrapped some steel strapping around the fitting to reinforce it, grabbed it with channel locks, and used my other hand to twist the grip up the last 3/8 inch, worked like a charm! can't wait to take em out for a ride this weekend

    It seems the wiring had changed a bit from my 2011 Ninja 1000. I believe in mine the factory accessory bullet connectors laid right on the inside lip of the left upper fairing. I don't recall the service tech even removing any plastics. Now I guess they have another set of bullet connectors behind the left dash for the install of a 12v or USB outlet as well?

    I fitted the evo sports grips today on my 2014 SX. I didnt file or sand the throttle tube as the ridges came off easy with a new razor blade but it WAS so tight on both sides I wish I had sanded them some as I have broken the lug on the throttle cable housing that stops it rotating on the bar due to twisting it back an forth, I will need to fix it or replace it if it makes any input errors on the cables.
    also my stock fuse in the accessory was only 2amp which it blew soon as I turned on the grips but I did temp fit them to the battery just to check they are working and they did, even though it has the battery sensor built in I still dont want to run the stock grip wire to the battery I find its neater to use factory loom but Im just a bit miffed as to why only a 2amp fuse was in their !??
    So be careful not to do what I did an break your cable housing fixing lug as these are tight fitting....No need for glue ! unless you fine sand your tube and bar.

    One question….do you know where the 12v to the bullet connectors is fused? I measured 12v there, but once I connected the grips and controller up, lost the 12v. The grips work off I take the connection direct to the battery. Thanks

    IF YOU HAVE A GEN 1 NINJA 1000: Jonathan, as always, did a great job of breaking down the steps and what is needed but I could not set up my Oxford with Oxford facing the front because on my 2011 N1k because the clutch cannot be pulled in (I also have ASV levers). I had to place the Oxford logo a full 180-degrees so although they now face me, they are upside down but otherwise, they work the same.
    Jonathan, What do you think of the grips? Have you considered hand guards? I feel they do a better job of keeping my hands warm (and dry). Keep up the great (and informative) work!!!!

    Carefully considering my cable routing at the moment - when would you apply full brake with the throttle wide open?

    • @JonLong
      @JonLong  2 роки тому +1

      It's unlikely you'd have full brake and throttle wide open at the same time, but it's best to avoid any interference if possible.

      It’s ok. It’s a little clunky to use, and I don’t find myself using it much. It is nice to be able to let go of the throttle every now and then to adjust the windscreen or a vent on my jacket. But if I didn’t have it, I don’t think I’d miss it.

    The left grip is way to small to slide over the 7/8 bar. Have to file down the excess rubber inside the grip like the directions say. Stupid. Never had another set of heated grips that required this.

    You admit the most difficult part is to put the grips on, and yet you cut that off the video. You show what is easy, you deleted the hard part.

    • @JonLong
      @JonLong  3 роки тому +3

      Yes, sliding the grips on is physically difficult. I shared my techniques and tips for how to do it. I think that’s enough information for most people. The questions that most people ask relate to how the grips are wired and connected to the bike, so my focus is on that aspect. There’s nothing else to be learned by watching me push the grips on.
