The monotonous grind and boredom of day to day life on deployment is pretty well captured, but the guy trying to start shooting because of a left hand? Ya, he'd have been court Marshaled if he'd done that. Murder is murder and an unprovoked shooting would have been just that.
Yes dude knowing the langage of where you're going may save you from a lot of things....! I can't get why there's no more language training in US army, or French army. In any army that pretend to be an expeditionary force. Learn at least Arabian and Swahili (a language spoken by like 80% of black Africa) should be classic. Like for 10 soldiers they should have 1 capable of speaking these language at least.

So to raise your left hand is sort of like giving the middle finger. I'm not even 100% sure how accurate any of that really is, but at the very least it's a "myth" that's been told over and over again and it's reasonable that this Marine had heard it and believes it - regardless of the validity of it, and therefore takes it as an act of aggression.

Marines at the time qualified on iron sights at greater ranges. Historicaly, Marine rifleman qualify at higher standards of marksmanship than traditional army. I'm a middling to average shot at qualified sharpshooter, I never trained to use the iron sights of an AR15/m16 but I can still hit those ranges like it's a walk in the park. Marine corps teaches advanced Civilian target shooting on top of combat shooting. 50-100 meter 5.56 iron sights would be basic drills for civilian target shooting,
