"At first the Germans didn't shoot at him. I think they couldn't quite believe what they were seeing. But that wasn't the really astounding thing. The astounding thing was, after he hooked up with I Company, he came back."
I gotta be honest, these part amazed everybody back at foy... Including me as audience who watched these episode"
"...He came back"
You were around Foy during the Second World War?
No way dude!
One of my favourite scenes. The smile of admiration from Lipton was perfect.
Lt's are that way. Anything to make Captain😂 unfortunately Nam wasn't so kind to soldier's of this rank for their actions.
"At first the Germans didn't shoot at him. I think they couldn't quite believe what they were seeing".
The german probably never expected that, and they also DO NOT EXPECT the same guy to do the same thing again immediately.
Good combat leader, don't ask your men to do something you wouldn't.
Yep, he led from the front. Common men who accomplished extraordinary things.
"Who are the brave? Those who go to war.
Who are the brave? Those who fight no more.
Those who gave their lives, protecting freedom’s shore.
Who are the brave? Those who serve in war.
Who are the brave? Those who live with pain.
Who are the brave? Those whose lives are plain.
Those with healthy bodies, those protecting the unsure.
Who are the brave? Those who serve the poor.
Who are the brave? Those whose speech is free?
Who are the brave? Those loving liberty.
All those with heart and mind, protecting all they find.
Who are the brave? Those who serve mankind.
These are the brave.”
--J. Paul Williams
He would never ask that pf anyone, that's why he did himself. But yeah, I see your point ☺️
Haldane did that in The Pacific, and it got him killed.
Given the situation, I doubt he could have asked anyone.
Exactly. That is true of any leader in any capacity.
The shot of him leaping through the shell explosion is peak Band of Brothers.
it's in the intro stills
Best moment captured in the series in my opinion.
I've seen Band of Brothers at least 5-6 times, and i still feel a sense of relief when Winters orders Speirs to take over
Dike was the worst
@@Elixus we all thought that, but again Dike’s character was probably grossly misrepresented. he became a career army officer, awarded lots of medals for bravery and the incident in the Ardennes forest has widely been reported that he had PTSD or back in the day they called Shellshock. We know that Buck Compton also suffered from Shellshock, so it wasn’t unique.
Where the hell did you get that info about Dikes? @@marksallows113
Dike was shot in the shoulder in the first moments of the Foy attack. The pain caused him to go into shock and disarray. @@marksallows113
@@marksallows113 Apparently some say he got hit too, which caused him to shut down
Wahlberg‘s (Lipton) smile/smirk, epitomizes how the men must’ve been boosted by Speirs’ courage. In my opinion Wahlberg doesn’t get enough credit for his performance as C. Carwood Lipton. Restrained and stoic.
Absolutely! His best acting performance...
Remember in the 3rd episode Speirs tells Blyght that his problem was he still had hope of surviving. Speirs went on to say " You have to consider yourself alread dead. That way you can operate like soldier has to." Speirs simply demonstrated his outlook of "this needs to be done, im already dead so I'll so it"
Kinda of a take on a Marcus Arillus quote.
@@eddiemclean7011 most modern day quotes are probably based upon either Marcus Aurelius or Sung Zu
@@lidlett9883 Military wise for sure.
I always thought that was Welsh. Speirs was with a different company then
Fine line between bravery and stupidity though. "fools rush in where angels feast to tread".
I loved how winters yelled "SPIERS! GO DOWN THERE AND RELIEVE HIM OF HIS COMMAND" and spiers just does it. Awesome scene, episode and soldier
Spiers was a legend and band of brothers did him justice.
His last job was keeping Hess in prison ❤
A friend of mine guarded Hess and Speer before going to Vietnam. Said Hess was a nut but my friend smuggled food and alcohol to speer
@@burtvhulberthyhbn7583that description makes it sound like Spiers was a convict!
@@beastwaynes4868Speer not Spiers

@@triggersafe1 AKA "The Nazi that said Sorry".
Winter's said that if you're going to lead a group of men into war, always have a man like Spiers. People like him inspire hope and courage in your men, fear and dread in the enemy. Spiers is living proof that sometimes all it takes is one determined soldier to turn the whole tide of battle. He was, in every sense of the term, built different.
Kinda like Audie Murphy...
They were just built different back then. The greatest generation.
Without a doubt.
Unbelievable courage. Just how Americans are. My grandfather's survived WW2. My dad and uncle survived Vietnam. Two purple hearts. Wounded, then returned to be wounded again. He is still alive. Just how my family is. Defiant and courageous. Hard to stop. While making a difference. How my family is. Losing is not an option.
@elcapitan5680 The job. Orders are orders. Digging ditches safer than combat.
A well deserved name for a generation of people we should look up to.
Then they gave birth to boomers who were the worst generation and cause of most of our societal and political ailments.
If “Fuck it. We ball” was a person
More like hold my beer😊
If "YOLO" was a person!
Anyway, it was that moment Speirs established himself as the "Giga-Chad".
😂 No limit
That crazy bastard.
Indeed.
But a good one.
This mini series was just phenomenal! The greatest generation to be sure . Easy company heroes all. 🇺🇸
The greatest? BWAHHHHHH HA HA HA HA HA yyy, ok, suuuure they were kid, suurrrre they were
Spiers is a legend, reading recent books about him clears up a lot about his mysterious nature.
Which of those books would you recommend? I’d be very interested in reading them.
Fierce Valor I believe it’s called
@@NDB469 Thanks!
It was a hunter right?
So proud of this Scots born American soldier, as a Scot it's so sad to see these men from all over America fighting together as brothers having one another's back and all the wars since then is the same so sad to see how divided America has become. And how another who says he has Scottish blood calls these men losers and suckers and calls himself a Christian not at all proud of him.
I always laugh hysterically when i watch this scene. Not because its funny, but because its so incredibly bizarre how that man was just a straight up superman and said "alright, ill be right back" and ran THROUGH the enemy line hahahaha. What an absolute legend
For real
They were our greatest generation. Not afraid of dying, just afraid of failing the mission. Thank you Grandpa Darby, Grandpa Harry and David my step Dad. They fought so we could live.
Edit: I failed to mention my Aunt Jenny fixed radios in the WAVE's. My Dad's Granny worked in a munitions plant.
Something I don't think many 'white' people forget or simply don't realise is just how much we as black people contributed to the war effort (even though that generation were vehemently opposed to permitting blacks/negroes the opportunity to fight) but also our respect and gratitude by the astounding sacrifice of those millions of men (incl. Russian, Polish, scandanavians Indian, Indonesian) who collectively stopped the Nazi war machine.
We know what failure would have meant, not just for the world but for us especially. We knew.
@joeletienne3455 even though the history books don't really talk about it, we all know logistics win wars and without the many maintenance companies most of the white troops wouldn't have made many gains.
It's not common knowledge but the real ones understand the other side of sacrifice.
@@joeletienne3455 Absolutely!
@@joeletienne3455 No, it's just most of us don't think about race constantly.
@@PeteNice29 That's a luxury that being white affords you sir.
Coming back from fighting a war to sitting at the back of the bus and using segregated services wasn't an issue for your race.
But you're welcome!
As he ran, he asked the Germans, "Anyone want a cigarette?" That's why you see some of them running away.
I heard he wasn’t actually carrying his rifle, just a carton of smokes
Dude single handedly could have ended the war If he offered some to Nazi top brass, including Herr mustache 😂😅🤣
I see you 😉
🚬😵💥🔫
@@user-dm8kz8ul8hthe Thompson was only used in scene bc they didn't have a carton of lucky strikes
@@AndrewMitchell123 fun fact: old mustache was a vegetarian and ex-smoker who demanded no one in his presence smoke, yeah he was THAT type way before it got popular.
It’s one of my favorite scenes from the entire series, truly god was with him on both counts 🤙🏻🇺🇸🦅
It always brings a tear to my eye when I watch Band of Brothers, to think of what they went through in battle!
I will always think of every one of them as heroes.
Speirs was a natural born soldier (Born in Scotland)🏴. He reached the rank of Lt. Col, the exact same rank his son Robert Speirs (from his English wife he met while stationed in England) would attain in the Royal Green Jackets, in the British Army. Fact is often stranger than fiction!
Lt Col Speirs is the difference between a soldier and a warrior.
The balls on that man
I salute all the soldiers who sacrificed their lives in WW-2... Really they were brave..No doubt...They are real Hero of ground..Love from India ❤❤❤
What amazes me about Speirs, was that he was a born soldier. He didn’t volunteer for service, but he was drafted. And the man was on his habitat from day one with a very long history of service, including Vietnam. Just amazing.
The key is to accept that you are actually dead anyway. 🥈
Art of War
You’re already dead ……you fight to live again
Just like what rick said in the walking dead
Reminds me of B in A-Team saying Special Forces psych themselves out by telling themselves they're already dead. I try to live by the same mindset.
@@Ray_Moyesthe only thing about band of brothers I nvr liked is how they show Pvt Blithe as a coward when in reality he was nvr scared to fight like they showed during the battle of Hill 30. That's the only thing about the series I ever had a problem with bc his fellow soldiers hav said he was nvr cowardly or hesitant to fight.
If i remember correctly, they left a decent amount of facts and events out of the series out of fear viewers would perceive the facts as fictional and discrediting
This clip is actually an example. Speirs’ run through Foy was actually a much farther distance than depicted in the show. The director and showrunners decided to depict it as shorter because they felt like it would be too unbelievable to the audience.
they wanted their viewers not to die of lack of sleep while watching it in marathons
@@seandlax9they made up for that with making him run through the town instead of what happened in real life where he ran across the edge of the town. Both equally mind blowing😂
Reminds me of that a bridge too far scene where I think Frost runs under a bridge to reach someone, in real life he walked but it'd have been too unbelievable to show.
Grandfather was in 1944, Guam sixth Marine division also made the landing April 1, 1945, Okinawa six Miranda🙏
He also ran across trenches under fire to take out an artillery gun in one of the episodes. He lost some of his men in the process but left Winters and his company in awe.
The look on Donnie Wahlburg's face says it all.
Just incredible ! I pray that his current family now realize who they are related to !
Speirs was the badass that every other badass looked at and said
"You are a badass"
The Germans didnt shoot him because they were too afraid of Speirs offering them a cigarette 😂
Bruh FR 💀💯😎🤣😂😅
Chuck Norris checks his closet for Spiers before bed
That was a man who led by example!
More an example of the duality of man sir
This is why Lt Speers was a total badass, showing excellent leadership qualities. An example to us all. Thank sir for your gallant service. I solute you...
He knew it was suicidal. But necessary. It's called called heroic❤
It was leadership
He should have received at least a Bronze Star with Valor for that!
I'd say Medal of Honor!
@@jeffputman3504I would too, but I bet he would say the best award was not getting killed.
I think he did receive the Silver Star for that action, but I'm not certain.
He's a gift to the US from Scotland
He was reputed to have yelled out “ I gotta save Bubba !”
Speirs once killed 15 germans with a grenade
Then the grenade exploded
Wish l could give you 3 thumbs up, best laugh l've had all week!
So Spiers was basically Chuck Noriss of his time
When Speirs mother was in labor with him, the first thing that came out was suppressing fire
@@johnherbst88 that almost made me Pi$$ myself laughing 😂
The real life Chuck Norris.
What a fantastic brave Patriotic Act . God bless Lt Spears . Rest in peace 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Nothing in band of brothers is embellishment
I mean as much as I love it it's not *perfect* and it's pretty skewed in Winters' favor at times, neither Sobel or Dike were *that* bad for example, and there are mistakes like claims that Blithe died in one of the earlier episodes, but it *is* an awesome series
@@guerney2000 Blithe severed in the Korean War and is one of only a few that made an airdrop in two wars. I believe he died in 1967. I also believe he revived a Bronze Star and the Silver Star.
@@guerney2000 The thing that pissed me off was the way they made Sobel look, and what really pissed me off was that Winters and other members allowed it to be shown that way in the movies. I lost all respect for those who did not speak up.
Telling a story there will always be some no fiction in there.
This very scene is embellished. He didn't run right across German lines but rather in the middle of German and American lines, aka no man's land. Still an absolutely and arguably more badass feat but yea, there's definitely lots of embellishments
A fucking legend.
Amazing leadership and heroism
What a bad ass and solid leader
It’s that fact that he fucking ran back is what astounds me the most. I still can never get over it no matter how many times I see and still laugh each time.
Spiers was a madman!
A true hero.
Sombody definitely said. “Run through there I bet you won’t” “bet”
This scene lives in my head rent free. "You stay here while I go for help"
He knew what needed to be done and he also knew the consequences if it wasn't carried out. Shit like that will make a man such as Spiers run through walls. He saw it as his duty, his men saw it as "yeah, that guy is on our side!"...Bloody hero's all...
Watching the series, I thought Spears lost his marbles. 😅 What an act of bravery by an insanely honorable soldier. Mad respect!❤
The greater powers were with him all the way. He was a testament to bravery of our Military 🪖 and the spirit of our country.
One of the very best parts of this show. So well shot!
Lieutenant spears is honestly one of the most impressive soldiers we’ve ever had besides James McNasty
Don't forget John Basilone and Chesty Puller.
@@fredofromchicago777 dude those are marines, army guys are soldiers
Opaa said that they where surprised by the American soldiers actions and bravery at times because they had been told that Americans had been tested in battle and that it would be easy for there soldiers to be crushed / defeated … yes my grandfather was German and he was part of the wehrmacht …. Yes my grandmother was black / native yes I researched…
Airborne paratroopers, overcome and adapt. That was an act of exceptional leadership and bravery.
In the Band of Brothers series, there are exactly 2 scenes that steal the whole show - even though there are many more that are still very memorable.
1. This scene. Spears should have gotten the MOH for such a display of pure bravery.
2. Winters' run across the field at the Crossroads. It's hard for most of us to imagine what that exactly means - as far as he knew, the Germans were aware of the American unit and were preparing to attack. Still he ran across open territory - alone - in order to engage the enemy. Truly a remarkable act of pure heroism. (BTW, the _reason_ he told the rest of his men to wait for the smoke was because he assumed the Germans would try to cut him down, so he wanted the men to wait in the trench so they could return fire once the Germans zeroed in on him.)
Best EP 'FOY' and the best moment of the show. The emotions it provokes still gets me.
One of a number of my favorite scenes from Band of Brothers.
No one expects the unexpected.
Spiers would've made a wonderful edition to the Spanish Inquisition
True hero's. Real men. True wish that all wars would stop worldwide
Leeeroyyyyyy Jenkiiinnnnnnssss!!
they had no idea what to do because no one has any idea when the enemy just runs by you... brb
I've done this in video games, running through behind enemy spawn areas and not getting shot because they don't expect you to be there. So I can see the psychological behind it. It's something you just don't expect and don't know how to react to it. But to do it in real life under those circumstances is wild, insane stuff. What a soldier he was.
It’s the reason why they were the greatest generation and we all owe them so much ❤
🗣did he get a MEDAL 🎖 for that ? 🤔🇺🇸
The look on Donnie’s face said it all… in that moment Speirs decided to move I believe the Hand of God protected him for it was a monumental moment..
This is one of my most favorite scenes in the movie series, and when Maj. Winters ordered Capt. Sobel to salute him. "We salute the rank, not the man." Two manifestations of great leadership.
This MAN is nothing to F*#k with. He ran past the enemy like it was not 💩. Thank you Sir. Thank you for saving the 🌍
When I served in the USCG, I wasn't afraid of dying when faced with the possibility. I was afraid of messing up and having my shipmates or the civilians I was trying to save would die or get hurt because of it.
It’s time for the men and women of today to stand up just as much as grandpa and these men did. My grandpa had a lot of stories he told only to only us, his grandsons. My grandpa and my dad, who fought in Vietnam, will forever be my heroes and even though they are now gone, they set the bar high for what it means to the an American.
Amazing and inspiring, heroic. Just doing what needed to be done!
He can run really fast carrying those huge Balls of Steel
He also never denied shooting German prisoners.
I can watch this series over and over
This is one of the most epic moments of the entire series, and the music they use behind the scene only further conveys Speirs’s level of heroism that his men felt towards him for doing that.
Later someone ask Spiers what he thought about Chuck Norris, he replied "Never heard of her"
I would trust my life damn near every man i served with in Vietnam. Not kids, even though most were only 18 or 19, they stopped being kids after a few hours in county. They arrived, as kids went home men.
What a great warrior. Don't see men of this caliber nowadays. You know how the saying goes, "Hard times make hard men, hard men make easy times, easy times make soft men, soft men make hard times"
This scene is the one that can bring tears ti my eye's.🇺🇲⚔️👍
Inspiring indeed and creed! God Bless!😊
when REAL MEN are build different on those chaotic times,,,
Lt. Speirs is a TOP G
The 28th Infantry Division was at Bastogne with Airborne and I was PA National Guard
That loud klinging, was Spiers steel balls!
God gave these men courage I have yet to see in my lifetime.
What magnificent splendour💂
"Hanz! Here he comes again Hanz! Reload for f*ck sake's"
Hanz: "🥴"
This is how true a man behaves in the past ❤
Speirs was insane.
If someone had ordered him to do it, eh.
But he made this decision on his own initiative.
Speirs wasn't in command of the unit when the attack started. He wasn't even in the fight. He was ordered to take command by Winters because the man in charge on the field was doing a mess.
I'm not trying to say that Speirs was any less brave then he actually was. Just pointing out that it wasn't his choice to join the fight.
These boys really earned the title of the greatest generation.
No matter what ! He was more afraid of failing his mission and men. A true leader!
Bullets cannot be dodged. Will this series, its commentaries & footnotes & the war, never end?!
God was with him. Thank You Lord for Your divine protection.
This is definitely one of those real life events that doesn't even seem possible. The fact he really did this is nothing short of incredible. It sounds and looks a lot like Hacksaw Ridge. From what I've heard in that movie they left out some of the most amazing acts in the movie that Desmond Doss did during the battle because they thought people would think it was bullshit if they saw it in the movie.
Speirs was the perfect combat soldier and leader for the time and situation... it's the reason that some of the other things he did were tolerated. In war allowances are sometimes made for the greater good.
Excellent series for anyone that hasn’t seen it. I’ve seen it a few times
That scene was badass. It was funny how the germans were looking at him thinking "wtff??"
Immediately after he got word to the junior platoon officer in I company and confirmed that they were going to push their attack, he headed back just as that junior officer was killed by German gunfire. Had he delayed his return run by half a second, Spiers would have been killed.
If "aight holde my beer" was a person
He Was One Brave Young Man Some Men Are Born To Lead And Some Men Are Born To Be Led .
