Hey Lawncare Nut, thanks for sharing this video about Zoysia. I seeded Zenith Zoysia last July 2019 here in TN, and it took off in just 31 days after seeding with 90 degree weather. I highly recommend Zoyisa to anyone even the seed over sod. It's very strong and durable. I can't say enough good things about it. I hope to see more videos about your Zoysia lawn in the future Thanks.
@@TheLawnCareNut Yes, I was fortunate enough to see it grow so fast, but I think it's because it likes the 90 degree heat. I'm in Kentucky. Spot-planted a little Zoysia here and there and used some seed Zenith in the front about 19 years ago. I have an acre. It's taken over about half of my acre now. It goes dormant for about half the year and turns a wheat color. I have to admit, it's a downright eyesore in the winter, but in the summer, I have the best looking lawn in the neighborhood. I once had a lawn care guy tell me in the winter my grass had died and I needed to replace it. lol I would seed more now and just make the whole thing Zoysia, but in about a year I'm moving to my house in South Carolina. This time around, no half measures! I'm going to go ahead and seed that lawn with Zoysia now, fairly heavily, so when I get there it'll have a good headstart in taking over. Should be easy down there. It's only a quarter acre and the St. Augustine in that lawn is spotty and has lots of areas of just dirt. My Zoysia is going to go wild down there.
Hey Lawn Care Nut, this Dale Andrews talking to you from Lake Charles, LA. You're in Florida I'm sure with all that lush tropical foliage in your yard, some I recognize. In Lake Charles, we're classified as subtropical with a similar climate to yours except we experience a few light freezes typically each winter, almost always in Jan. or Feb. I had a patch of zoysia grass on a small patch of my patio when I lived in Shreveport, LA (northern part the state. It eventually died due to lack of sun. The fence around the patio shaded it a lot of the day. The salesman told me that but I just didn't listen. I ended up putting in some gravel and was happy. At the golf courses I have worked at the past couple years, we always go with the method of “half throttle-full choke” strategy when we start our mowers, z-turns etc. works like a charm and everything starts right up with little to no struggle. Enjoy the mow!!!
I love Zoysia. I have Emerald Zoysia which is one of the finest bladed varieties. It's so thick that it completely chokes out weeds. It's slower growing than Bermuda and more drought tolerant. If you are ever in Massachusetts feel free to stop by and say hi.
Hey Allyn just to let you know about a completely dead battery.... If you ever have a completely dead battery and your battery charger won't charge it, it is because the charger is not recognizing the extremely low voltage to allow it to pass current into the battery. Since that was a 12 volt battery you could have tried jumping it off with your car or truck. That is not something I would do all of the time but it will work. I would only have it connected long enough to start the mower and let the mower recharge the battery. It beats going and buying a battery......batteries are too expensive. Anyway hope this helps if it ever happens again. Battery chargers are really only designed to charge "low" batteries not dead batteries. Also, love the zoysia!!!
@@TheLawnCareNut it should but I would look into it. Just discovered that there’s Zoysia grass in my backyard. I live in central Wisconsin. The previous homeowners must have put it down not knowing what kind of seed it was. What’s funny is it’s been thriving just as well as the cool season grasses have.
I’m SERIOUSLY thinking about zapping my TTTF yard and going to Zoysia. Mainly because that TTTF is so damn thirsty. Especially with having to do additional micro watering during the hottest days of the summer. Living just east of Nashville.
So glad I ran across this video. You helped me to decide what grass seeds to use. I got St Augustine in the front yard and nothing but weeds in the back lol.

First time viewer, your personality is killing me - even got a twister reference in here! Getting my first home and gonna go with Zoysia, thanks for the guidance .
This is my 3rd season with zoysia in Central FL. I will say mowing it at 3 inches is a mistake. It will look good for a season or 2 but then it will start to crash and burn. Mow at 1.5 inches even in the summer. One thing you will like, that most sane people hate, is if you go with an inch and a half you're gonna need to mow twice a week from may-ish to early september (you're in zone 10 maybe a little more for you) Also keep it at that height and let it take its nap in winter time. Not sure how much of a nap you get down there as it's probably frost free but it'll probably brown up. That's a good time to hunt down and spot spray weeds though as they're easy to find. Could always go with that there turf paint when she goes night-night. All in all, the biggest mistake people (and I've made) make is treating zoysia like the saint aggg. It needs to be treated more like bermuda but with a little less N. Less N isn't a problem really for us in good old FL because of the fert bans sort of force us into that. Back her down to a inch and a half this summer and see what happens in a month. Maybe give her some of that microgreene after she likes that stuff. Also don't believe the 'less work less water' zoysia story. Like I said it doesn't like quite as much N as the bermuda and st agg, but its every bit as much work and water. The one good thing is if its established and we catch a bad drought (and major water restrictions) which does happen here every once in a while is that the zoysia will safely go dormant. This can be a tough thing to fight though because it does go dormant quickly and sometimes in brutal dry heat it decides to do it between our scheduled waterings. You could even make it a point to add a little more content over der... reel mow the zoysia and rotary the st aggg! You already have 2 different schedules with the st agg and zoysia anyway. Anyway thanks for the videos and I can say I'm loving the MicroGreene 0-0-2, too early to tell about the carbon earth granular ferts I'll have to wait until september to throw 'er down, but I'm excited about that XGN 8-1-8 replacing Milo. For most people in FL anyway, Milo is good to get started on for practice, but we have lots of phos in our soil anyway.
Oh and remember with Pete from GCI also layed on the turf like you? He was apologizing to it since he was about to "smoke it down." It was during the reno at his place of business. You guys are hilarious!

I have a 3/4 to 1/4 Zoysia to St. Augustine lawn here in Central Arkansas, and I'm going to concentrate on making my front lawn a full Zoysia lawn. Thanks for the Zoysia lawn tips and hope to follow more of your videos for more information and plans for my Zoysia lawn! michael
Buy yourself a battery charger.. For my snapper I bought BMK 12V 5A Smart Battery Charger Portable Battery Maintainer on Amazon. Works great. And yes, Zoysia is a great grass.. My entire yard is now Zoysia. It loves sun, warmth and water. Keep it away from shade.
Long time follower! I’m moving Chicago to Dallas so I’ll be leaving that beautiful KBG. I’m not familiar at all with the southern grass types so this was very helpful. We are building a property that will have an irrigation system...would you still recommend Zoysia over St. Augustine and Bermuda?
I just bought a house in Riverview, FL and I am almost positive they did nothing to their yard. it is COMPLETELY BROWN and I am so frustrated with it :-( These water regulations are not helping either. All I want is my yard to look like yours! It is absolutely beautiful!! I have a crew working on it now but I am only a month in and very impatient. I just want a DAMN NICE YARD!!
Another great video from the LCN. I considered zoysia when renovating back yard a few years back here in Texas, Bermuda won me over though.... Do have a question for you though LCN. Ever herd of Bermuda grass mites? Let me know, as I’m sure with all that knowledge you have to have some experience with these pesky microscopic critters. Keep the vids coming 👍🏼
Nice and classy presentation with the right music, I felt like I was watching the Garden channel. I have fescue and that evil common bermuda so its time to switch to either Empire or Palisades Zoysia. Based on this video I like Empire better due to a darker green and the grass blades stand up straight in a more uniform manner.
Just finished laying our last two pallets of El Toro Zoysia in the backyard! Can't wait to trade out the Bermuda for more Zoysia in the front! Loved your vid, thanks! Wish I had a lawn large enough to justify that mower, haha!
i recommend removing (or flipping up) the black "shoot guard" it allows for better dispersion of the clippings. we do that on all of our 61" bobcats. also watch where you're discharging!! that mess of grass onto your walkway hurt me physically 😜 much love man -7 years full time landscaping
I should plant some of that under my tree! LCN, I'll be hitting you up pretty soon for a refill of the N-EXT bio-stim pack. It made a big difference in the yard last year! Thanks for the stickers too!
I just installed empire zosiya and I have a couple questions.. How often do I water? As far as fertilizer goes which kind and when do I apply? I’ve failed at 2 attempts at this lawn stuff and I’d like to get it right this time. Lol. Btw I took your advice and went with SOD solutions. Excellent product and service.
Its kind of a headache in the northeast, customers are always complaining about big sections of their lawn being brown when the weather is cool which is about 60% of our snow free months. Looks great in the summer though.
Kansas City here. Transition zone. They are big on the fescues, etc in town and don't push zoysia. Our guru Toby T told me here 15 years ago that zoysia was bad because it gets disease. "I could show you a whole bunch of yards that look awful." Well, I have been doing it the official way for years now and I don't see how zoysia can be any worse than the fescues, ryes, blues, especially this time of year. These cooler grasses hate our summer heat and they require fungicides if watered too much (or have soil that holds too much water), diligent continual watering(if you want it to live/not burn out in our summers)constant reseeding...and then more fertilizer. I mean, seriously. Whatever. It is pretty obvious that the cool weather grasses shouldn't grow here at all... unless you can't stand the yellow of zoysia in the winter. Growing up we had zoysia in a side yard we called the "badminton yard" and I remember it took SO much abuse from our badminton games and still looked great. All. summer. long. And it didn't require ANYWHERE close to what I have gone thru with tall/short fescues, blues, ryes here.
I have empire zoysia too and live in Boca Raton South Florida. What height do you recommend I should keep my grass next year? This is my first year, kept it at 3 inches this year but would love to go low. I have just heard mix reviews on cutting low in SoFlo as the summer will be too hot and that is why you want it longer? Also what month in the spring do you scalp and dethach? I commented on one of your other videos and thank you for the response. I my grass is loving all your products too! Spray and Pray!!!!
Greenville SC. I’m thinking about growing/planting a certain zoysia seed in our lawn. We have Bermuda, but it’s dying in the shady areas ( gets 4 hours of sun) so we laid caviler zoysia thin blade sod in those areas. My question is what type of zoysia seed can I throw into the Bermuda sod (save $ instead of sod) That matches the caviler (sun/shade)
My neighbors on either side of me have zoysia it is creeping into my lawn a lot. Not sure what type of zoysia. My lawn is mostly fine fescue. Would it be easier to let the zoysia take over my yard or put up the fight to keep it out. Thanks.
Hello! I'm from Southern California and planted Zenith Zoysia from seed last year. Also plan to plant it from seed in front yard this year. Do you have any suggestions to help keep it green longer as fall nears? Any suggestions to help be green sooner as spring hits? Any cool season grass seed I can reseed for a green lawn over fall? I was thinking of reseed in with Kentucky bluegrass, but don't know if it'll end up competing with my Zoysia. I want to keep my lawn mostly with Zoysia.
The battery could have been saved. When a battery Falls below a certain voltage most Chargers will not recognize it. You can jump it with another battery. Or find a charger that has a manual setting.
@@TheLawnCareNut na you dont need a trickle charger, just need a charger without a computer in it. Those old Schumacher chargers from walmart or harbor freight would force voltage into that battery. BUT, when you discharge a battery that far its life is significantly shortened so you would have needed a new battery before the season ended anyway.
I saw my wife driving into our subdivision when I was out snow blowing. So I laid down like that in the driveway and waited til she pulled in. That was hilarious.
I'm in Central Florida near Orlando. I have an Empire Zoysia lawn. Back in January my front yard experienced near or at freezing temps overnight. Despite my keeping up with watering it and cutting every two weeks (since it slowed growth during cool temps) the Zoysia developed a reddish color half way down their blades then a week or so later has gone brown and clearly went totally dormant. Last night, Feb. 6, another cold front came through, lots o' rain but temps in the 50's - 60's. I want to do something about it but what can I do? Ratio-wise, I'd say it's 80% brown, 10% green with reddish tipped blades. Is there anything I can do to green it up or do I just bite the bullet and wait for Spring?
I have had Meyer zoysia for over 30 years. It's good but instead of a lawn I have turned much of my yard back to pines and palmettoes. The most important is the backyard the vegetable garden. Sod webworms and june bug grubs like to attack zoysia but mine is fine because the Muscovy ducks love the insects.
I get brown patch EVERY year in my st augustine, waste money on antifungals because they don't work and if this is not an issue with Zoysia, it is a great reason for me to make the switch.
A lot of good information, i fear my yard is being over taken by mutiple grass types. Being on the east coast im fighting sandy soil and bahia grass. i cant seem to get on top. Where do i start?
I have learned a lot from your videos and for sure is paying off. I live in Puerto Rico and I have zoysia all around, and after aerator and fertilizer I am still dealing with long patches of very short blades, is like they are smashed to the floor, like having people all year walking on it, but thats not the case. I don't want to cut them with the trimmer because I dont want to hurt it, height is so short that mower does not cut it, just so you can imagine, I have tried even at 1.5" and no cut, these blades are really shashed to the ground. Their color and look is great, but they don't get up/grow vertically. Any advice? Thanks!
I live in Sebastian Florida and just had a house built and I guess it was Bahia grass they put down. After so many months went by, I tried to weed and feed and realized I must have used the wrong stuff. I used weed and feed for St. Augustine grass. Now I have patches of st. Augustinge grass growing in certain places. I would rather have that type of grass. I guess I spread St. Augustine seed with the weed and feed. If I leave it, will it take over the bahia grass or will I just have a big variety of grass?
I have a question. About 5 years ago, this really fine turf looking grass started growing along the sidewalk of my front lawn and now has taken over the whole section. When I cut it, it has a sweet fragrance to it and quite honestly, is a nightmare to cut because it's so thick. I usually have to raise my mower deck higher for this section just to navigate through it. Yesterday, I started a lawn service to get my yard in good shape and when I asked the tech, he said it was Zoysia grass. Does it have that kind of fragrance when cut? Why am thinking that it's something completely different and he just read it wrong. I notice in other smaller areas of my front yard too. He did spray for weeds, so I'll be curious to see if it starts turning colors and I'll know it's a weed and not turf grass.
Pretty sure I have a couple spots of zoysia in my yard and really do like it. I wish it would just spread to all of it and be one lawn. Really expensive to get the plugs to fill in the rest. I had planned on doing an overseed this fall, but think I might not now as I would prefer the zoysia. It just takes forever.

I’ve seen people have the same type of reaction to their grass, but it was when they were smoking it not walking on it.
😎
Zoysia love is real.Don't hate.
Call it bias but all I could hear in this video is how much you love zoysia because it’s so similar to Bermuda 🤔
All jokes aside, I loved the vid. You’re the man.
you are the man when it comes to grass. Got a damn nice bermuda and zoisa lawn thanks to you.
this channel is a must for lawn gurus like myself
Love that you know your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu; as if I needed another reason to enjoy your videos!!
Allyn...I think it’s awesome that you linked up with BYD from BGC! Being that I’m from GA I’ve followed BYD and Doc for some time now, but honestly find you much more entertaining and your scientific approach (other than the times you say to just throw er down) is what helps me develop my game plan. Thanks for all you do, brother!
Thanks bro. BYD is good people. I look forward to working with him more this year.
You’ve talked in me into plugging at least plugging my backyard with Zoysia. Centipede is so finicky and I’m growing impatient with mine.
This man reminds me of myself. I talk to my plants, worms in the soil, the sun, wind, rain, butterflies and pretty much everything that has to do with my garden! LOL!!!
Duuuuuuude, that rear naked choke!!!!! ayyyyyeee!!!! i love the energy you put out,,, I'm new to the lawn game, learning abut the different grasses, weeds and NPK
My neighbor in northern NJ has zoysia. Bulletproof. Doesn't water a single time all year, greens up for about 4 months of the year, chokes out weeds
for sure up where it is cooler the stuff is 100% dominant.
Cleetus McFarland needs your help with the desoto racetrack! I tried to mention you, since you know. You are the best!
You should try giving him an email. It'd be great for your channel!
Thank you! I left a comment on his tour video asking him if I could create the infield for him!
@@TheLawnCareNut hes pouring a huge concrete pad in the middle of the track. I think it would be awesome for you to help him with the grass and making that place look banging good! I told him about the propane torch method of killing weeds in the concrete like you mentioned long ago.
I just watched the video of him turning on the track lights lol
The Lawn Care Nut I just watched the video of you putting sod around the freedom factory.
HELL YEAH BROTHER!!
Is this the comment that started it all? :)
Brother inlaw got the Time Cutter 60in. Zero turn very nice cuts super good throws out the grass and fast rider mower also consumer report rated it number 2 best mower
Installing a mulching kit and getting rid of that chute is a great way to use your clippings as a natural fertilizer.
Yes for sure, I'm not a fan of that side discharge. I have the mulch kit in the garage, just have to get time to install it. Maybe today!
I’m sure his neighbors are peaking out their windows and are talking about how he’s nuts talking to his grass. 😹
Good morning sir! I've really appreciated watching your lawn care videos, and this one is amazing. I have a 3/4 to 1/4 Zoysia to St. Augustine lawn here in Central Arkansas, and I'm going to concentrate on making my front lawn a full Zoysia lawn. Thanks for the Zoysia lawn tips and hope to follow more of your videos for more information and plans for my Zoysia lawn!
michael
I changing my lawn to emerald zoysia. I like the thin blade kind.
I'm focusing on zoysia this year on my channel. Keep up the great work, Al!!!
It's beautiful stuff for sure! Thanks bro!
Very detailed… informative….lush green videos….such a passionate person…thanks much +the lawn care nut
Awesome visit Allyn, wish it was longer 🤜🏻🤛🏽
Greetings from Conroe, Texas ! Thanks for the videos I am learning a lot from watching them.
OK, I laughed when you said the grass was beautiful and gentle.
Grows like our much hated Bermuda in Washington state but I like the color of it way better. And in Florida at least it stays green in winter.
Allyn, we always watch the entire video!
Thanks bro.!
Wish I had a lawn large enough to justify that mower, haha!
i recommend removing (or flipping up) the black "shoot guard" it allows for better dispersion of the clippings. we do that on all of our 61" bobcats. also watch where you're discharging!! that mess of grass onto your walkway hurt me physically 😜 much love man
-7 years full time landscaping
For sure I need a mulch kit. It's in the garage waiting to be installed.
Wow a Twister reference!! New to the channel, did not expect that. Great work, appreciate the knowledge drops.
You're the beast in lawn nut programs!
I should plant some of that under my tree! LCN, I'll be hitting you up pretty soon for a refill of the N-EXT bio-stim pack. It made a big difference in the yard last year! Thanks for the stickers too!
awesome! Season is starting to kick in for sure!
Love my zoysia back full sun and he.s right walking on it feels good thick too
You trip me out Mr. Al😂 Great, great video quality and super informative!
OMG so excited.. My new lawn will be installed on Tuesday. Tifway 419, time to "throw it down"👍🏼
Good call!
I love how zoysia looks however, it didn't want to grow in my yard.
Empire is the hardest zoysia grass to maintain with mealy bug, ext...
Very loving to your grass! Love your style!!!
Your neighbor are dying this video😂😂😂😂👍👍👍👍
I Love the smell of Zoysia Grass in the morning...
You should look into a chute blocker.. Thanks for the sounds of summer! Nice to hear as I'm watching the snow fall.
The sound of silence
YThanks
Hey Al, great clip when are ya gonna put out some more podcasts? I need some driving to work inspiration!
Allan man, your a trip! Lol finally getting zoysia put in my front yard. So excited!
When I was a kid Id lie down on it after I mowed and take a ahort nap cause it was so comfortable
Greenville SC. I’m thinking about growing/planting a certain zoysia seed in our lawn. We have Bermuda, but it’s dying in the shady areas ( gets 4 hours of sun) so we laid caviler zoysia thin blade sod in those areas. My question is what type of zoysia seed can I throw into the Bermuda sod (save $ instead of sod)
That matches the caviler (sun/shade)
I’m from Greer! I don’t think you can get zoysia seed it does best with sod or plugs.
I love Your work ethic, keep us knowledgeable, ThankYou!
Someone did tell me that - they said I needed to trickle charge. Lesson learned.
How does it do with high traffic. Aka 5 dogs and lots of shade ?
That "NoAd" sunscreen was the best.. I wish you could still get it.....
I saw my wife driving into our subdivision when I was out snow blowing. So I laid down like that in the driveway and waited til she pulled in. That was hilarious.
😎😬👊
🤣You've got issues! Lol! Very entertaining and funny! Plus, very good in information.
Still hoping to see you take a reel mower to that zoysia like you mentioned in your first video after install. Would look great!
Glad to see that my sticker made it!
The honda gives that zoysia the best cut!
😎👊
A lot of good information, i fear my yard is being over taken by mutiple grass types. Being on the east coast im fighting sandy soil and bahia grass. i cant seem to get on top. Where do i start?
One of your most fun vids yet 😂😝😅🤣
That skit was hilarious! You really are nuts about this! :)
here in Dallas I really want to try Zoysia, I dig weeds by hand as neighbors don't know what grass really is or how to even have a yard
it's very strong. Would love the TX heat too.
I’m in carrollton and I make both of my neighbors yards look pitiful. I’m about 95% weed free and they are 95% weeds 😂
I'm here for fun the blue skies and sunshine👍
🤘👊🔥
